In an ancient Africa of verdant Sahara plains, warrior woman Jeneba Karamoke has grown up scorned by her people because her father was a leopard man. When she rescues a party of fellow warriors from cannibalistic monster half-men, she hopes it will finally win acceptance for her. But no...in order to prove she isn't lying about the vanished hero Tomo Silla's part in their capture by the half men she must make Tomo face the tribe. Can she find him, and then survive more monsters, foreign tribes, and a curse laid on a fabled city to bring him back alive?

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2006-03-21

On the Sahara Plains, in spite of being the niece of their King Mseluku Karamoke, her Dasa of the Imbu tribe always held Jeneba Karamoke in contempt because her sire is a shapeshifting leopard man. Still Jeneba is a loyal strong warrior woman and would die for the Dasa, especially her family. However her prayers to become accepted through brave deeds fail even when she rescues her warrior peers including her uncle from monstrous half-human cannibals because everyone blames her for their original plight instead of the man who failed the tribe Tomo Silla. Ironically Tomo's action including his disappearance has turned him into a martyred hero instead of a betraying deserter.

Outraged and disappointed, Jeneba decides she must find Tomo and force him to speak the truth to the Dasa. She begins her personal mission, but instead she finds she must lead losers on a quest to save the people of the missing city of Yagana that abruptly vanished; failure means the end of life as she knows it on the Sahara plains.

THE LEOPARD'S DAUGHTER is a terrific refreshing fantasy based on the African mythos. The location and the various fantastic species make for a vastly different quest that readers will appreciate. Jeneba is a wonderful protagonist who must save the world she knows when all she wants is to prove herself worthy to her people. Her companions are delightful as there are not heroic Tolkien heroes, but instead include Tomo and a half-man who should be her enemy. A solid short science fiction murder mystery "Afterburn" is included though it is seemingly out of place with the prime tale as a bonus that showcases the vast talent of Lee Killough.

(First I am going to type in the synopsis from the back of this book, and then I will write out my reactions to the book.)

THE LEOPARD'S DAUGHTER, by LEE KILLOUGH

Her mother is a princess. Her father is a leopard. Her allies are the wild hunting beasts of the night.

FEAR JENEBA - THE FIERCEST WARRIOR OF THE DARK JUNGLE

Seeking vengeance against the man who betrayed her tribe, Jeneba rides into unknown forests haunted by invisible demons, murderous spirits, shapeshifting creatures and wizards' curses ... only to find that she must join her quest to another.

For the fabled city Yagana has vanished in a clap of thunder, leaving its people helpless before an invading horde. And an ancient prophecy decrees that to save Yagana, Jeneba must lead a coward, a traitor, and a monster. Past cannibal armies, an insane demigod, a hideous messenger of death, and into the cavernous bowels of the underworld...to find a mystic lost harp carved from a dead man's bones.

If Jeneba fails, it will cost her the lives of her party, the freedom of whole tribes, the fate of an empire --and, as important...her honor as a warrior.

    ~~~~~~~
    This book is a mass market paperback, and it is 218 pages long. The Leopard's Daughter was published by Popular Library, which is published by Warner Books, Inc., in 1987. I bought my copy used.
    ~~~~~~~
I really liked this book, Leopard's Daughter, by Lee Killough. I don't read a lot of fantasy, because most fantasy books always seems to be some sort of Tolkien rip-off, ultimate good versus ultimate evil, the secret heir to the throne, celtic or gaelic or european mythology; the story unfolding over thick volume after thick volume. And it always seems to come out in trilogies or long series of some kind. A two word phrase that I have come to dread is: "Epic Fantasy."

However, this book was fantasy, but based on African mythology. I bought a book called Dark Matter, which is a collection of african american science fiction. I read the introduction to Dark Matter, and it mentioned and recommended Leopard's Daughter, by Lee Killough. So, I picked it up used, and I just finished reading it. I loved it.

The main character is Jeneba, the daughter of a Dasa princess, who is the sister of the king, and a leopard-man shapeshifter. Jeneba is very strong, trained as a warrior, who is betrayed and then sets out to clear her name. Perhaps not the most original plot, but it had some unusual choices, the characters acted in unusual ways, and the ending was unexpected, the fate of several of the characters came off quite different than I thought they would.

The freshest, most interesting thing about this book was the setting and mythology - african, rather than the usual celtic/british isles landscape and mythology that most fantasies seem to use. There wasn't an elf, a dwarf, a unicorn, a dragon, a castle, a secret prince to be seen. There were man-bushes, thorn magic, familial and tribal facial tattoos, and mystical hyenas who interrogate the dead. I don't know anything about african mythology, but Killough seems to have done her homework.

Leopard's Daughter just seemed to be really different, unique, a book that sticks in the mind; and I enjoyed that alot...

Valerie Steiker's poignant memoir limns with love the indelible impact of her glamorous, adored mother, Gisèle, and her painful struggle to come to terms with Gisèle's premature death from cancer in 1988, when Valerie was only 20. The book's marvelous opening pages portray a beautiful, privileged woman who can't do her own hair and throws the entire household into disarray when dressing to go out with her husband. Swathed in gowns, bedecked in jewels, and always shod in high heels (even on her canvas boat shoes), Gisèle is the epitome of a wealthy, sophisticated New Yorker. She's also a Belgian-born Jew who spent the war years in hiding with her mother after her father was deported to Auschwitz; the magical cocoon Gisèle spins for her daughters in their East Side apartment is a creation of her will and imagination, her passionate desire to give them the childhood she was denied. Steiker's luminous prose, vividly evoking Gisèle's allure, makes palpable the void left by her loss. Only at the end of a five-year romance launched just weeks after Gisèle's death does the author realize, "I had been desperately trying to hold on to my mother ... at the expense of my growing more fully into myself." The chapters about Valerie's postcollege years as a young writer and editor in Manhattan, though well-written and intelligent, aren't quite as compelling as the ones that tenderly chronicle her mother's life. This is Gisèle's book, and it's clear her daughter wouldn't have wanted it any other way. --Wendy Smith

    Book Description

In this tender loving memoir, Valerie Steiker evokes a magical childhood on the Upper East side of New York with a woman whose own losses led her to delight in family, beauty and life itself.

Valerie Steiker’s Belgian Jewish mother, Gisèle—who, as a child in Antwerp, was hidden from the Nazis—wasn’t a typical American mom. She spoke with throaty Belgian Rs and wore only high heels. Before her marriage, she had studied acting with Lee Strasburg and been a model in Mexico. With her vitality and elegance, she created a joyous childhood for Valerie and her sister. Together they tangoed through their vibrant Manhattan apartment, took in great art, and shared “women’s hidden secrets.” Gisèle’s premature death left Valerie (at the time a junior at Harvard) unmoored, but in grieving and in finding her own path to womanhood, Valerie would ultimately grow to understand Gisèle more profoundly than she ever had as a child. Beautifully evocative of a glamourous and now-vanished world, The Leopard Hat is an extraordinary memoir about the warm and indelible bond between mother and daughter.

5 out of 5 stars found in the garbage and read.......2005-03-22

I was throwing my garbage out when I found this book. Its not really the type of book that I like to read. It is an excellent acoount of a young girl's growing into womanhood and her friendships, travels and relationship to family. very well wrtten and the pace is perfectly set.
    I recommend.

4 out of 5 stars Why no photos????.......2004-07-04

When I first started reading Valerie Steiker's prose, I had to look up from this book and come up for air. It is verbally concentrated and heavy, like a Bavarian Creme -- if only we had some photos to look at -- after all, Valerie is sitting us down and telling us the story of her life, her mother, her family. We're trying to look at Valerie's family album -- and there's nothing there. It would have been great to see Valerie and her sister standing with their Chi-Chi mother Gisele, at various stages of their lives, and at special holidays.

But about one-third of the way through this book, a familiar chord was struck in my soul -- here I was, walking down 5th Avenue in the 1950's, with my equally Chi-Chi Mom Sylvia, who when young escaped from Mussolini's Italy with her mother and siblings, with just the clothes on their backs. Like Valerie's Gisele, my Mom Sylvia was also a living testament to the special aura of European elegance, thus The Leopard Hat was even more special to me because of this. And like Gisele, Mom Sylvia died before her time.

A special thread of love runs through this book. I still wish it had photos, but like a Bavarian Creme, I could not walk away from it, and I felt honored for such a special glimpse into this very special family.

And I truly think that if Mom Sylvia and Gisele had ever a chance to meet back then there would have been an instantaneous recognition of kindred souls.

    3 out of 5 stars A mixed bag.......2002-11-09

I honestly don't know how many stars to give this book. On the one hand, the writing is suberb. The author has a clear, eloquent voice, and her prose is a pleasure to read (even considering her rather heavy handed use of analogies). Her book was even lyrical in places, and her tone perfect.

On the other hand, I finished the book feeling significantly less charmed by Miss Steiker then she clearly is by herself. The book is narcisstic without affect or irony -- the themes are (1) how beautiful, charming and special Steiker is; (2) how beautiful, charming and special her mother was; and (3) how Steiker's family was mythical perfection -- with the exception of a short and mild period of teenage sulleness, the family hummed along without strife, jealousy, unhappiness, bitterness, insecurity or even sibling rivalry. They were perfect as a whole, and perfect as individuals. Gag.

Some of the stories were touching -- her final days with her mother, her mother and grandmother's trials surviving in Nazi Germany as Jews. Other stories were tedious, such as a long and complicated college prank (which apparently had the sole purpose of showing how special Steiker is, natch) or a story that began with "I first met my grandmother in a hotel room in Cannes . . ." or Steiker's coming to terms with the idea that her family's house in the Hamptoms was really a blessing and not a burden (and I'm not even joking). Even when writing about her first love, Steiker muses that the relationship was founded mainly on how much her boyfriend idolized her and her beauty.

I get the feeling that this author is enchanted with her own reflection, which is really too bad -- I think that when she focused her efforts on someone other than herself, she demonstrated that she is an incredibly talented new voice.

    4 out of 5 stars A Daughter's Love for Her Mother.......2002-10-06

In recent months I've been reading books where authors reflect on life with their parents. Books like Tender at the Bone which described the young Ruth Reichl's flamboyant and at times odd mother. Or Stuffed by Patricia Volk which told the story of a family restaurant owend by the author's father. And of course we could add Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt, Blackbird by Jennifer Lauck or All Over But the Shoutin' by Rick Bragg. Now I have just finished a recent addition to this category. The title is The Leopard Hat: A Dauhgter's Story and is the author's loving tribute to and portrait of her mother, Giselle.

Giiselle born in Europe personifies grace and elegance. She survived the war by hiding out with her mother and then lived in several European cities before settling in New York City. She meets and marries a very wealthy investment banker and move into k they have a large apartment on fashionable Madison Avenue. In time two daughters would complete their family. First Valerie arrives and then her younger sister. The author reflects on this grand lady by giving us a glimpse of her life. Shopping hairdresser appointments, charitable functions, her home and her children fill her days, The author describes Giselle's home with its beautiful objects and her wonderful designer clothes. She also explains about her mother's love for art and music and how she influences her daughters to open their eyes to world around them. And throughout the book we find out more about Giselle's time spent in Europe as a child, which is so different from her life now. We are witness to Valerie's rebellious teen-age years and her mother, so used to her two daughters being her best friends, had to let go to keep her child. And then very lovingly and poignantly does Ms. Steiker describe her mother's death from cancer when Valerie is in college.

I enjoyed this book. I did feel at times that the emphasis on the families wealth was a bit much. I preferred the parts where Giselle spends time with her daughters reminiscing about her youthful experiences and she listens to her daughters. This is a touching and warm book. In the end one wishes they could have known this woman who personified a life filled with flair, style and a determined spirit.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully moving.......2002-05-30

The Amazon.Com Editorial review describes this book perfectly. Streiker describes her relationship with her mother with love, generosity and humor. The author grew up in privileged enclaves of New York's Upper East Side and Easthampton. But instead of the "Mommie Dearest" scenarios (or spoiled brat behavior) typically described in such memoirs, Streiker describes a household full of love with utter unpretentiousness. Many times throughout the book I felt myself yearning to trade places with her -- until I was struck yet again by the tragic reality of her mother's death from cancer at an early age.

Streiker writes with a precision and clarity that feels almost crystalline. My only criticism: Her descriptions and stories pulse with such life and meaning that her attempt to INJECT meaning (through the running conceit of linking the events of her life to various animal stories) rings false and hollow. It adds an overly earnest, amateurish note to an otherwise incredibly polished work.

2 out of 5 stars Too narrow-minded in its approach.......2006-11-25

This book provides excellent information about what rheumatoid arthritis is, how to distinguish it from osteoarthritis, etc.

However, I don't want to live with RA, I want to recover from it. As such, this book offers no help in this regard. It tells me about drugs that I can take and splints that I can wear to help me from becoming completely disabled, but offers me no hope of recovery.

In contrast, the book "Conquering Arthritis" by Barbara Allan, is the well-researched account of someone who took charge of their health and fought to recover from the disease, to get their life back. And succeeded! I'm well on the road to recovery myself by applying the principles in her book. Now that's a book well worth spending your money on!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Introduction to this disease.......2006-08-27

I was diagnosed with RA in December and picked this book up soon after. It gives lots of information about the course of the disease, medications, exercises and diet. I've loaned it to family members and reference it whenever I have a question about what my body is doing. The only drawback is that medications are developing at such a fast rate, that the book is already a bit outdated after only 3 years. However, it is still a great starting point.

5 out of 5 stars This is a work of superb medical scholarship.......2004-01-13

Now in an updated and expanded second edition, Living With Rheumatoid Arthritis by Tammi L. Shlotzhauer (Clinical Instructor of Medicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center and Practicing Rheumatologist at Rheumatology Associates of Rochester) and James L. McGuire (Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Mount Auburn Hospital, Cambridge, Massachusetts) is a large print compendium of the latest information on Rheumatoid Arthritis concerning the diagnosis, treatment, and daily life (from special diets to possible alternative therapies and more) with this troublesome and painful disease. Living With Rheumatoid Arthritis informatively presents its facts in terms and text ideal for the non-specialist general reader, yet without glossing over specific issues, problems, medicines, or other challenges facing rheumatoid arthritis sufferers. Simply put -- this is a work of superb medical scholarship and Living With Rheumatoid Arthritis should be on the shelves and available to the patrons of every community library system in this country.

5 out of 5 stars Two Thumbs Up!.......2000-10-31

This book gives a lot of layman explanations to medical technical jargon that the doctors throw at new patients. At times the reading was a bit dry, but this book serves as a daily reference to me with the many challenges I face as a newly diagnosed RA patient.

5 out of 5 stars A Complete guide to Rheumatoid Arthritis.......2000-04-29

This book covers all aspects of this disease and is written by a practicing Rheumatologist. RA is considered one of the "inflammatory" forms of arthritis and is now generally considered an autoimmune disease. Topics covered in depth include what joints are commonly affected, other organs that may also be involved and some of the other complications that may be experienced. The testing commonly performed by Physicians is discussed at length and explained in lay terms. The general progression of the disease differs in different individuals and this is discussed as well. The treatments such as medications, therapy, surgery are discussed individually and in depth in lay terms. Exercise is also covered. Some other aspects that are discussed are emotional issues and disability. This book actually presents a solid in depth knowledge of the diease and contains a lot of information that many family practioners and generalist may not be aware of as they are not specialists in this disease process. This book should be read and owned by anyone with this disease or a loved one with this disease. All of the information is presented in lay terms that are easy to understand. There are numerous illustrations as well.

This book is perfect for anyone who wants to learn about Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). It explains, in very good detail, the process a person who is diagnosed with RA will go through. It explains medically what is happening; how to understand the "medical team" that you will have; what treatments exist and their most common side-effects; and coping skills. Anyone who has recently been diagnosed with RA should definitely read this book. Anyone who is supporting a person with RA would also benefit from reading this book. I would highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Good General Guide to RA.......2007-02-15

So far this book has been very helpful, especially with various issues that affect people with RA. It is up-to-date on the pharmaceutical options for the treatment of RA. A good general guide.

5 out of 5 stars The best book out there........2003-12-28

I've been very disappointed in the quality of books out on the market about inflammation disesases such as RA. This is the only one I would recommend. It has all the info you need, neatly laid out with great, easy-to-read graphics. Definately 5 stars! Also look for their book on Alternative Therapies. Buy extra copies for your family/friends so they understand what you're going through.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a must.......2001-08-29

If you or a family member or a close friend has been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, this is the book to read. It explains the various aspects of the disease, what one can expect to happen, how to cope with the pain and how to organize your life in order to minimize the stress the disease can cause. The book does not candy-coat the disease, but does show how it can be managed. It explains the different drugs that are available to help and it explains their side-effects, also. There are helpful hints to diet and exercise, as well. I found this to be a very important book for me because it gave me the ground-work for dialog with my doctor. I am glad I found this book.

              4 out of 5 stars Eye-opening.......2004-12-28

I didn't know anyone with Rheumatoid Arthritis before hearing about this book. I didn't even know how to spell it! But I know the author (haven't talked to her in at least 10 years), and after discovering this book, it opened up a new understanding of living with this disease. I was totally ignorant of it. The author's tone is very conversational (almost a transcript of talking over dinner or in a warm living room), and she draws you into her experiences, pain, and ability to survive and thrive.

The experience of living with constant pain is an unknown for most of us, and Laura's writing opened my eyes not only to her difficult and exhausting world, but also to her quiet courage and resolve.

It's nice, simple reading for all. As one of the only autobiographies by a person with JRA, Nicole's Story is a nice resource for understanding, sympathizing, and empathizing if you have JRA. My daughter has JRA and I'm sure she'll be glad to have this book so she can see that she is not alone. I think I'll share it with her teachers and classmates too.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for any family with a child with arthritis.......2001-06-14

This pictorial book of a real life story of Nicole, a little girl with arthritis kept my children's attention. My daughter has juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and this book helped her to see she is not alone in her struggles. She can easily relate to Nicole. I also gave this book to both my children's teachers for their classroom collection. It explains alot about JRA as well as making it 'acceptable'. They found it to be informative as well as touching.

              5 out of 5 stars Great Message.......2001-01-05

This book sends out a great message to young people stricken down with this painful disease. I was diagnosed with JRA when I was fourteen, and I'm 15 now. Thing is, we aren't stricken down. With the help of medical science and power of God, we'll always find a way to live through yet another day that drags on to feel like an eternity. This is a book every JRA-RA patient should read, young or adult. My love and prayers go out to Nicole and her family, plus all the rest of us with this formerly "crippling" disease. But there's hope if you catch it soon enough. I had it for months before we got a diagnosis.

              Goodbye and God Bless

              5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......1999-11-04

I rate this book very high because I have the same disease and I'm 12 and it's amazing that she goes through the same things

5 out of 5 stars Great Job Nicole. A great gift for any child or parent........1999-08-11

Great book! I recommend this book for parents as well as teachers and medical professionals who work with patients suffering from JRA. I've had JRA for 17 years and was finally diagnosed at age 16, after two years of symptoms and suffering from the crippling RA pain.

The list of resources in this book will help any parent or patient work out problems they may encounter living with this disease. As an author it's great to see, and use a book that takes JRA seriously from a child's point of view. I've resourced many books written by medical professionals that lecture patients on how to cope. But Nicole's Story goes the the heart of what all of us living, coping, and surviving with RA and JRA experience on a daily basis. And I plan to use it in all my support groups for kids and teen living with JRA.

Nicole's Story will help discard the myth that Arthritis is just "an old person's disease." Kids coping with JRA have now found a voice. I hope more people will take the time to listen. Bravo Nicole!
