You can't take this as a whole for a Jordan work. It's meant to open up the series to younger kids, not be just half of the Great Hunt. The same goes for all of these shorts.

3 out of 5 stars Why?.......2004-02-21

Robert Jordan's "The Great Hunt" is a great book, undeniably, and as this book is simply the second half of it, it must be as well. However, I can't see any point in buying this, or its partner (the first half of "The Great Hunt," titled "The Hunt Begins"). Granted that the original book was a bit big and bulky, why buy two books that are merely the halves of one? They will cost significantly more. The pacing and flow of the books cannot help but to be skewed by the division. There is no upside to the deal that I can see. Again, I highly recommend the story; it's an excellent example of Jordan at his best. However, just buy the original, save yourself some money, and enjoy the book in its entirety, the way it was meant to be read.

        Book Description

Thomas Jefferson believed that the pure-principled teachings of Jesus should have been separated from the dogma and abuse of organized religion of the day. This led him to recast, by cutting and pasting from the gospels, a new narrative of the life and teachings of Jesus, where, according to Jefferson, "there will be found remaining the most sublime and benevolent code of morals which has ever been offered to man."

4 out of 5 stars Piece of American History.......2007-09-24

This bargain is an impoprtant piece of American history. Jefferson was a diest, which they viewed God as like a fine clock maker and made the government intself, not the constitution. They got rid of anything supernatural from the Bible. It stands along side the King James Bible and the 1611 edition of the King James, the works of Martin Luther as one of the most important reads for a Christian in American history. I liked it a lot, but it's too skimpy a volume to be a classic, but it is famous.

4 out of 5 stars The Jefferson Bible Worth Reading.......2007-09-13

First, and foremost from my perspective, I liked that Jefferson focused on the man Jesus and what He taught.
As I travel my spiritual path, my focus is also on the man Jesus, what He taught, how He lived and most of all how He treated others. Much could be learned and differences could be made today in our society if this were so. The four gospels were interwoven throughout the book which makes it easy to follow, I only wish the print had been larger. I was disappointed it was so very small and this made it much more difficult for me to read.

        5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2007-06-27

This was recommended to me about a year ago. Very interesting and attractive book

        4 out of 5 stars Jefferson's Bible--a lens that worked for him.......2007-03-23

It is interesting that any religious writing that is capable of being used in some way to detract from the "authority" of the church is so often the object of great discussion. Jefferson's Bible provides such an occasion, for no doubt Jefferson questioned some of the claims of the church that he felt to be unreasonable. That's the bind. We are attracted to Jesus but often repulsed by the Church. It is only fitting that we reclaim Jesus in any way that we can. Jesus is the chief metaphor revealing humanity at its best. Through this metaphor we learn of redemptive love. Jefferson found his lens by which to connect with Jesus. The rest of us must find our own lense--and one way we can do this, perhaps, is by trying to understand what others have done. Jefferson has left us a personal "testament" by having extracted those parts of the New Testament that spoke to him. Those parts of the Scripture are for him now "framed and on the wall", so to speak, and because the book has been published, his favorite Scripture portions are spotlighted for us in this book. I'm not sure he meant his special portions of the Scripture to be on public display. Perhaps each of us who are interested might find our own set of very special parts of the Bible? If we ourselves were to do this, that would probably have pleased Jefferson, in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Founding "god" father.......2007-02-13

This streamlined synopsis of the teachings of Jesus Christ is drawn from the gospels of the bible without any religious dogma. The parables Jesus spoke are compiled nicely and provided me with the life lessons which I attempt to live by.

        Book Description

"Evidence and Paul's Journeys" is a fascinating historical investigation into the travels of the Apostle Paul. Here is what two noted scholars have written about it:

"It is very encouraging to see that the most recent research...has been so carefully gathered together and presented in such a readable form. Jefferson White is to be commended for rendering such a service and his book deserves a wide audience."

        - Dr. Bruce Winter Warden of Tyndale House, Cambridge University

"When I received Evidence and Paul's Journeys in the mail, I planned on skimming it for a minute or two and putting it on the shelf. That was a big mistake. Once I began, I could not put it down. The book encouraged my soul, not only about the historical facticity of the book of Acts, but also in making the events vivid and real. An open minded skeptic would benefit from this book and a convinced believer will enjoy the reality it breathes into the Acts narrative."

        - J. P. Moreland, Professor of Philosophy, Talbot School of Theology, Biola University

The historical evidence that the book investigates includes:

        - the city, regional, and provincial political boundaries and titles mentioned in the book of Acts, some of which existed only in the middle of the first century.

        - the social and political characteristics unique to the cities and provinces that Paul visited.

        - the archeological findings that bear on the biblical narrative.

        - the distances that Paul traveled on land and on sea, and how long it took to cover those distances, according to the scriptures and to ancient and modern testimony.

        - the meteorological and nautical evidence relevant to Paul's travels by sea, including the spectacular confirmation of the details surrounding his shipwreck at Malta.

        - Paul's arrests and trials, and the legal maneuverings that took place in quite different jurisdictions, studied in the light of evidence about ancient law.

        - Paul's dealings with noted individuals who are also written about in pagan and Jewish historical accounts.

        - a comprehensive examination of the complex evidential relation between Paul's letters and the book of Acts.

For the first time, all the historical details of Paul's journeys are found in a single book written for the general reader.

        4 out of 5 stars Evidence and Paul's Journeys........2007-10-02

The author briefly and directly dissects the recorded accounts of the apostle Paul's journeys. Problems, real and not so real, with reconciling the accounts to information from other sources, are analyzed. This is hardly a gripping page-turner, it is rather dry, but it is informative. A far more enjoyable exposition of Paul is John Pollock's `The Apostle: A Life of Paul,' but, while also being quite informative, Pollock's is a very different kind book. At only 134 pages plus notes, bibliography and other materials, White's book is very focused and concise. His scholarship seems rather solid. Taken as brief essays in their own right, his Prologue and Conclusion are quite interesting. This from his Conclusion:

"The present study has been concerned with the problem of empirical evidence and its relationship to the record of Paul's journeys.
"This stands in marked contrast with the purpose of modern biblical scholarship, which is largely concerned with theoretical matters rather than with evidence. Nor should it surprise us that scholars find theory more interesting than evidence. After all, the primary purpose in getting a Ph.D., or for publishing scholarly papers, is to demonstrate the depth of one's knowledge and erudition. Since the empirical evidence surrounding Paul's journeys is limited and can be understood even by non-scholars, career-track biblical scholarship almost has to be about something else. And that something else must be complex enough so that only the cognoscenti can understand it. As a discipline, biblical scholarship inevitably points away from empirical evidence and toward intellectual novelty.
"It does not help that the primary purpose of the New Testament is to record God's intervention in human history. Modem scholarship in general proceeds from an intellectual culture of unbelief. That culture is based on the a priori assumption that any theory, no matter how subjective, automatically trumps any argument, no matter how empirical, that points to the possibility of divine intervention in history."

        5 out of 5 stars A nice overview book on Paul's journeys.......2007-03-17

This is an excellent introduction to the missionary journeys of Paul. While concise and easily readable, the book does a nice job of blending history, archaeology and the Book of Acts into an informative narrative.

        5 out of 5 stars Great Insight.......2002-09-12

I loved this book. The insight it offers is second to none. If you are, like me, a fan of the Paul, buy this book!

        4 out of 5 stars Evidence in bite-sized chunks..........2002-02-25

The majority of this book deals with Acts. The author breaks all the evidence therein down into bite-sized chunks and deals with each piece in a straightforward and no nonsense fashion while following a self-imposed rule that "a contradiction cannot be proved if there is a reasonable explanation for it" (p. 118). This rightfully narrows the field of contradictions down to a scant few and warrants the author's assertion that: "The Acts account of Paul's journeys is as reliable as we may expect history to be. So far as it can be tested by objective evidence, Acts has proven to be an astonishingly accurate record of events" (p. 134). All of this evidence eventually points to "one of the most striking aspects of the Acts record" which is how many of the details "belong to the middle of the first century, and to that era alone" (p. 132).

He also deals with empirical evidence regarding 1 and 2 Corinthians and states: "If Paul had not written a second letter to Corinth, or if that letter had been lost to history, the travel plans that he outlines in the first Corinthian letter would contradict Luke's account of his movements in the third journey" (p. 88). We can apply this same logic to the perceived contradictions elsewhere and wonder if they wouldn't be just as easily cleared up if there were more manuscripts extant relating to that time--we shouldn't look askance at the Biblical narrative because it has a remarkable track record but question our limited understanding of that particular time.

Easy writing style that won't leave you exhausted; nicely done.
        --Moza

5 out of 5 stars Ideal for personal and small group New Testament studies.......2001-04-29

Jefferson White's Evidence & Paul's Journeys: An Historical Investigation Into The Travels Of The Apostle Paul is a comprehensive guide and a fascinating survey to Paul's travels for the purpose of spreading the message that the Messiah had arrived and his name was Jesus. Book Description

This volume provides the complete text of key Scripture passages that form the basis for theological study. The text used is the highly readable and modern New International Version. The verses listed are grouped by the classical categories of systematic theology (e.g., God, Christ, Salvation); on disputed points, verses from which the major theological views derive are given. Footnotes provide clarification and brief commentary on verses as appropriate. This work is intended to assist the theological student who might not take the time to look up the verses cited in systematic theologies, but it will also be useful to anyone seeking to better understand the major themes of Scripture.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Quick Reference and Great Footnotes!.......2002-01-22

Sometimes, when reading a book, I skip the footnotes in order to save time. I wouldn't dare do that with this book! The footnotes are the best part because they show HOW the verses are understood by those with opposing beliefs. They show why, for example, you can have two or more different theological views each supported by the SAME bible verses! Very interesting reading. This book is a great quick reference and is also good for devotional reading. I assign this book when I teach new members classes in my church! This is a book that should never go out of print!

5 out of 5 stars helps you decide for yourself what the text actually says..........2000-05-25

This is an excellent book to help you understand the basic theological differences between major doctrinal interpretations. Instead of giving you "unbiased" commentary on each verse which is almost always, by definition, slanted toward one side or another, the author simply gathers together the main texts each side uses to prove their position. This not only helps you decide for yourself if you agree with any of them or not, but it also trains you to recognize a good or bad argument when you hear one.

Since the different views must rely only upon the scriptures to support them in this book, you begin to see which arguments are the strongest biblically and which ones seem to be stretching the truth. All of the comparative doctrinal texts are placed in close proximity for easy comparison. You will learn a lot of theology (hopefully not just your own) by simply reading this book.

        5 out of 5 stars Good reading.......2007-04-11

As a "semi" Christian, this "bible" is quite a read. It includes all of the teachings of Jesus without all of the "miracles". My pastor and I disagree on the whole resurrection thing, but I think this book shows that Jesus would have followers even without that fantasy.

          Book Description

This book is the most anticipated publishing event in human history. Written down from angelic inspiration in A.D. 54 by Joseph of Arimathea, the earthly father of Jesus, The Book of the Holy Grail has been an unpublished manuscript for 1945 years. Revealed only in shattered pieces by an outlawed royal lineage protected by the world's most successful conspiracy, its secrets have influenced all of modern human history, from the rise of Christianity to the founding of the United States.

It reveals the origins of the universe, the sources of good and evil, and the purpose of human life. Its authenticity can be validated mathematically in American English, independent of its original language or historical documents.

It was first translated into English by Thomas Jefferson author of the Declaration of Independence, and himself a Grand Master, the Strict Observance -- Knights Templar, The United Orders of the American Rite.

This is the Bible of Gnostic Christianity, the original source for the legends of the Holy Grail, of Freemasonry, even of the Mormon Church. Its text contains the most attacked and suppressed alternative gospel of the life of Jesus. It disputes the accounts in the traditionally accepted gospels regarding what Jesus' mission was on Earth, what Jesus taught, and how Jesus died.

It has been waiting for the turn of the third millennium, and authority from prophecies made 146 years ago, for it finally to be published.

Forget The Passover Plot, The Gnostic Gospels, The Celestine Prophecy, or Conversations With God. If you're looking for the New Age book which was planned for publication before time itself began, you've been waiting for The Book of the HolyGrail.

Whatever you believe, it is time that this book surfaces into the public consciousness, so it can finally stand alongside the other great books of human faith and human history.

          3 out of 5 stars Confusion re-evaluated.......2004-04-12

Critics of the Grail theory say that the(remnants of the)tribe of Dan (expelled for idolatry) use references to Benjamin and Judah (the book claims to sketch the history of the Arcadians, or ex-Benjaminites, who IS mentioned in Revelation's new world - see Rev. 7:4,5)to deceive. (The names of Ephraim and Dan are omitted there).

Principles of belief, to pray in Truth and Spirit and confess the name of Jesus, are simple. The (highly esteemed) editor of this book is not member of a string quartet but some babydoll, punck or whatever band, which reminds me of the high percentage of suicides amongst teenagers in the USA that are related to the addiction to rock music. Jesus would surely prefer ennobling music and not lead people into a suicidal death. Lucifer entices. God ennobles.

In the list of definitions the following comment about American English as chosen language is made: "...the language spoken in the Languedoc region at the time of the First Family". That is, almost 2000 years ago. Why did Thomas Jefferson then had to write the Grail Doctrine's first English translation? Didn't Hamlet's Marcellus say something is rotten in the State of Denmark? In these times of the Luciferian Rebellion...

1 out of 5 stars THIS IS FICTION!!! - Jefferson translation not historical........2004-04-01

A cheap way to try to add credibility to a work of fiction - Jefferson did translate the Bible from the original Greek to an English version known as the "Jefferson Bible".

Thomas Jefferson wrote in a letter to William Canby, "Of all the systems of morality, ancient or modern, which have come under my observation, none appear to me so pure as that of Jesus." He described his own compilation to Charles Thomson as "a paradigma of his doctrines, made by cutting the texts out of the book and arranging them on the pages of a blank book, in a certain order of time or subject. A more beautiful or precious morsel of ethics I have never seen." He told John Adams that he was rescuing the Philosophy of Jesus and the "pure principles which he taught," from the "artificial vestments in which they have been muffled by priests, who have travestied them into various forms as instruments of riches and power for themselves."

The work that Jefferson translated has nothing to do with "The Book of the Holy Grail" sometimes referred to as the fictional "Merovingian Bible". The contemporary authors of this fictional work are trying to confuse readers with a cheap trick. There is no historical evidence that Jefferson was ever associated with the order of the Holy Grail. And no historical writings even reference such.

This would be fun fiction or even interesting theory if it were presented as such, however, the shameless trickery associated with this fictional work has made it an utter atrocity and an insult to human intelligence - DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME LIKE I DID!!!!!

          1 out of 5 stars Grail? Where?.......2004-02-17

Ive been researching the Holy Grail for quite some time and have quite an impressive library of quality works. I bought this book out of sheer curiosity and was severely dissapointed. This is nothing more than some hyped-up punk's meaninless jargon. As one of the other reviewers stated Joseph of Arimathea and Jefferson are spinning in their graves. Im sure an actual Joseph of Arimathea text is out there somewhere but this is definately not it. For serious researchers of the Grail Mystery, dont waste your time on this one. There are many books out there by credible researchers with miles of evidence to back up their claims.

3 out of 5 stars Need for Re-evaluation.......2002-01-01

This is an important book because it gives one a very good idea of the spiritual principles of a brilliant American statesman and what might be behind secret organisations who seem to rule the world.

On the subject of the crucifixion similar or different theories are found in books such as the Nag Hammadi library and Secrets of Golgotha by Dr Ernest Lee Martin. In addition the claim of the archaeologist and anaesthetist Ron Wyatt, who apparently found the ark of the covenant in a rock chamber underneath the place of crucifixion on Golgotha, with dried blood on the mercy seat, offers another perspective. All this can become quite confusing. Unfortunately the statements in The Book of the Holy Grail about the double crucifixion of Simon of Cyrene and Jesus Christ, and Christ's faked death, that contradict evangelical reports, are not proved substantially with footnotes, which makes it harder to believe this alternative story.

Jesus is reported to have rebuked people who put too much value on their biological descent from Abraham, and the Cathars and Waldensians rather believed in a purified and individualized spirituality. One gets thus the impression that this book is about a rather strange mixture of Christianity and Judaism.
The descriptions of the spiritual world and references to Melchizedek, Lucifer and Michael are interesting, but does not reveal much more than what a reader of the Bible already knows.

Perhaps we are really living in the times of the fulfilment of prophecies that were predicted in the Book of the Holy Grail, which would leave one with the hope that peace on earth might become more part of everyday reality.

The entire time I was reading this, I felt like I was reading a sequel to a book I never read. Something is missing. I will keep the book on the shelf, but as of yet, I just don't get it. Unless you have some secret knowledge, don't buy this book!
