Good Magical Fun.......2006-08-28
In this collection of short stories, Turner treats readers to seven magical tales.
In "A Plague of Leprechauns," a small town is beset with leprechaun-hunting tourists whenever someone reports seeing one of the little green people. See what happens when a serious young artist arrives in town on the heels of a sighting.
"Leroy Roachbane" is a boy who is mysteriously thrown back in time to ancient Sweden. Asked whether he is a spirit or hero, he chooses hero. Soon after his arrival, there is a battle to be fought.
The "Factory" is a self-contained community in the middle of an unending city. John, the newest employee, is assigned a job operating a crane far above the factory floor. He soon learns that men rarely stayed in his position due to ghostly happenings.
"Aunt Charlotte and the NGA Portraits" is a fanciful tale, told by an old woman to her great-niece, of an adventure inside a painting.
"Instead of Three Wishes," Selene wishes to be left alone. The elf prince who promised her the wishes can't understand why she won't accept, so he tries to find ways to make her happy.
Kevin, your average school bully, is forced to live with "The Nightmare" after he and his pals try to frighten an old woman. Each night brings more fear until the dream can be overcome.
"The Baker King" is about a baker's apprentice who bears a striking resemblance to the late king's son. Will the young man's uncanny appearance help when outsiders threaten to take over the small kingdom?
Sometimes funny, sometimes sad, and always fascinating, these stories will intrigue young readers with a taste for the unusual. Each tale is cleverly written and believable in its own way. Some parents may take exception to references to drinking, but it is not a predominant theme and would provide a good talking point between parents and kids later. (i.e.: The difference between social drinking in a local inn versus routine drunkenness.)
If your child is too young for Poe but too old for Cinderella, this is a fabulous choice.

A book for everyone.......2001-05-30
Instead of Three Wishes, by Megan Whalen Turner, is a book for everyone. It doesn't matter whether you are six or sixty-six; this book brings out the inner child in all of us. The clever plot twists and fantasy worlds keep your mind on edge. Instead of Three Wishes is composed of seven mystical short stories that will amaze you. The second story is entitled "Leroy Roachbane." This story involves a child named Leroy. Every morning Leroy woke up and went into his pantry to kill off any cockroaches before his mother entered. One day after his daily duty, Leroy went to the store to buy boric acid and roach motels. On his way home, Leroy's bike skid on an ice patch, and he was knocked unconscious. Leroy's mind began to wander, and took him to a place in many ways similar to his own life. When Leroy regained consciousness, he discovered something out of the ordinary. This story was incredibly entertaining and mind boggling, as is the next story. The third story is called the "Factory." In short, this story concerns a new employee that will work the high crane at a local factory. For some reason, this job has been vacant often. One day while the employee was reading on his lunch break, he saw another figure that seemed to also be reading. In actuality, the figure was the ghost of a little girl who once lived on the factory lot. This story takes what we think we know and twists it into the unknown. "Factory" makes you wonder if there is an afterlife, in a fun and lighthearted way. The fifth story is the title story. This story is in some ways similar to the first story in the book. It involves a student who helped an unrecognizable elf prince cross a busy intersection. In return the prince offers the student three wishes. THe student declines the offer and moves on. Over the next weeks, the student and her dis abled mother recieved a handful of gifts, which they decline. In the end, the perfect gift is evident, the offer was so thoughtful, and the student could not refuse. This story was very interesting to read because of the personal connections. Everyone has tried to find the perfect gift, and this story just pulls those emotions together in a magical way. The final story is entitled " The Baker King." i personally found this story to be the most humorous and entertaining. The story involves an island country without a king. The elderly king sent his only son off to boarding school, but no one thought enough to ask where. After a short while, the king passed away, and the island was without a leader. The king's court decided it would simply wait for a letter from the prince. After nine years, a letter was finally recieved. But it was not from the prince. It was from a wanted bandit. The letter prolaimed that the bandit would king himself once he and his gang arrived in the country. With little time to spare, the minister of cultural events, Orvis, went out one night and accidentally ran into a baker. Orvis was convinced that the baker could very easily pass as the king. In the end, the baker became king for a day, but then chose to return to the bakery. This story has many interesting, funny, and clever parts. "The Baker King", also has a nice overall theme. The story shows, that being rich and famous is not perfect for everyone. Overall, this book was an amazing read. I would recommend this to any person who enjoys questioning the obvious.

Wonderful!.......2000-10-07
I was intruiged by this book because of the especially creative cover, and the marvelous title. I feel that many books must have an intruiging title, and cover, while the reader in the beginning only sees the spine. This book had both. I began reading this short story collection, and was brought back to the edge of my seat with each story. A must-read!

Wow!.......2002-12-28
What a wonderful story. It captures the feelings of real people with the help of a mystical setting. The characters are very easy to relate to despite the ancient way of life. You will find yourself cheering them on, and scolding them. A new favorite of mine. A must read!
A wonderful love story.......2002-04-20
This is a very entertaining book with interesting, likable characters and a very well put together plot. The previous reviewer who was so concerned about a so-called inconsistentcy is totally wrong. Check out page 13, lines 8 and 9. Everything is there in black and white for the alert reader. It's exactly this sort of careful attention to detail that makes this book (and the rest of this author's books) so much fun to read. My only complaint, and it's a minor one, is that some of the historical details of the medieval period aren't quite as accurate as they could have been. But that's more than made up for by the book's charm and sense of fun. I highly recommend ALURA'S WISH.
Very little magic in this "Magical Love" story.......2000-05-09
Alura's Wish is part of Jove's "Magical Love"sub-series so one would expect that "magic" would play a bigrole in the story. But that's not really the case here. The onlymagic that happens concerns two dijinn (genies) who are actually a thoughtless King and Queen who were imprisoned in a slave bracelet by a distressed wizard. Supposedly whenever the jewels on the bracelet are rubbed the King and Queen are released and must serve the "rubber". Amazingly, though, when the slave bracelet is found by the hero of the story's young serf, and he rubs the jewels just like he is supposed to, the dijinn are released but pop right back in to the bracelet without offering the youngster his wishes! This allows the bracelet to conveniently end up in the hands of the heroine who, of course, gets her wishes. I understand this is a paranormal romance and that "weirdness" is bound to happen but, really, when an author sets up a set of basic rules they should be consistent. This inconsistency was an obvious and huge boo-boo that should have been caught before the book hit publication. This type of confusing rule-bending only served to annoy me right off the bat.
What follows is pretty much a standard medieval tale about a young, innocent maiden whose greedy father's machinations ruin her reputation and force her into the arms of the warrior hero. If you like your heroes wounded you'll like Connor. I did. He's broken in spirit and body and only wants to live out the rest of his life in peace and quiet. But due to further scheming he becomes betrothed to Alura and they fall immediately in lust. Or is it love? I was confused because the two actually spent little time together. With so many subplots happening around them they barely had time for a conversation.
Alura's Wish wasn't the `magical' tale I was lead to believe and it didn't engage my emotions but it did manage to make me grin a time or two. Those who like lots of adventure mixed in with a lust driven romance may well love it.
Medieval magic and genies--all in a love story........1999-07-12
Propelled by the mystical forces of the djinn, genies who materialize when needed, this medieval romance of Lady Alura and Connor Warrick will capture the attention of readers looking for something different. Alura was destined to marry Connors brother Morvyn until he died of a sudden fever. Connor is reputed to be a bad man, but turns into the lover of Aluras dreams. This is her soul mate, the man she will rely on for security and protection. Alura is kidnapped for the fire opals that bring the djinn to life, and Connor comes to her rescue. Their moments alone are electrifying. Hallam knows how to make the slightest touch riveting. Her ability to get inside the mind of a medieval woman in jeopardy is thrilling.
Wonderful mixing of bits of magic in a Medieval romance.......1999-06-18
A long time before even King Richard the Lionhearted ruled England, in a faraway place off the coast of Persia, King Zahir and Queen Radiya anger the wizard Sharrahz. To keep the woman he loves from interfering with his official duties, the monarchs sent her to marry someone else. Rather than leave her beloved Sharrahz, Radiya killed herself. An irate and grieving wizard punishes the two royals by condemning them to balance their scorecard with assisting a thousand and one couples on the path to eternal love.
By the Third Crusade, the former regal couple cum djinn are finally close to completing their quest. The regal pair believe that the widow Lady Alura de Gabin and her never before seen former brother-in-law Connor Warwick would make the next perfect duo. However, Alura relishes her freedom and plans to never remarry, celebrating the death of her cruel and abusive spouse Lord Ridglea. Connor wants only to recover from the horrors of war and refuses to entertain any thoughts of marriage. Alura's evil father wants Warwick's estate and will lie, cheat, and kill to attain it. Alura and Connor soon fall in love. However, neither want a long term relationship, making the probability that love has failed seem very certain.
ALURA'S WISH is a delightful Medieval romance that augments the entertaining story line with bits of magic. The characters make this novel a notch above the typical period romance. The lead couple is a warm pair fighting internal demons. The djinn are interesting, likable, and bumbling as they try to bring this couple together. Elizabeth Hallam, author of the critically acclaimed SPIRIT CATCHER, has written a fabulous tale that warrants return engagements for the former monarchs.

Wonderful Story!.......2005-01-24
We purchased this book along with Felicty Wishes Secrets and Surprises and Felicity Wishes Snowflakes and Sparkledust. My daughter and I LOVE them! The stories are precious and the pop ups and flaps are wonderful for my four year old to handle. The characters are whimsical - Holly (the Christmas Fairy), Daisy (the Spring Fairy), Polly (the Tooth Fairy), etc. The stories are engaging and teach compassion and kindness.

Exposing the nonsense spoon fed to the American public.......2007-05-02
Junk Science Judo Exposes the non-critical nature of journalists and politicians towards "science." Once clothed in the garb of "science" any and all claims are relayed with breathless hysteria and stated with the sort of dogmatic certainty that would make the pope nervous. Of course, with each and every one of these claims, immediate action is necessary and litigation and new laws are rushed through with dramatic, life saving urgency. The reality is that one or even two scientific studies isn't enough to base legislation on. That's where the ever so handy precautionary principle comes in. If it MIGHT be harmful, it needs to be outlawed. Like DDT. Who cares about millions of Africans dying of malaria? DDT might (though there is little or no actual proof) be harmful to waterfowl!
Warning: Junk Science Judo is junk science.......2007-04-28
Haven't read the book, but I have heard of Milloy and many of the other "experts" out there trying to protect us from "junk science" (I have read Milloy's website extensively, this is apparently more of the same). Sure, there's a lot of actual bad science out there, but the term "junk" only seems to be applied when someone is trying to knock down good science in the name of corporate (or religious) interests. If you still want to read this book, do so with the understanding that it was written with an agenda. You might be better off reading someone like Sagan (The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark) to help you in your journey towards a true understanding of science.
Sensei Steven Milloy, 9th Dan Junk Science Judo.......2006-10-15
Whether you are a newbie in science, or do research, Milloy's work is exceptionally relevant, and at the same time intensely interesting.
Sadly, there seem to be very few people doing exactly what is needed in this growing area of scientific vandalism, and I applaud Milloy's courage in writing this work and others on the same or similar topic. He shows great creativity in the style and format used to write this work. It is exceptionally interesting to read, and captivates. My copy was on my office desk for exactly three days, and then without a routing list made it way through some of the science staff.
I wish I had kept the statistics on this, and could plot the exact point that this work seeded an intense discussion. Perhaps a critical mass of people had been reached, and the fallout was exceptional. I suppose it will simply take more time as more and more people read, and understand the difficulties Milloy cites. It would be a shame to re-live the problems of yesteryear, and with Milloy showing the problems before they become epidemic, a double shame.
Awareness if so very difficult to acquire, but Milloy does help open eyes. I would heartily recommend this book.
Junk Science Judo.......2006-08-14
If you are unaware that most of what is broadcast as fact is really only Theoretic because even when a scientific study has been done but not repilicated it is still only someone's theory, this book will be an eye opener. As another author has said, "There are statistics, statistic and damned lies." On the other hand if you are not "up" for having your pet theory debunked as junk science better not read this book.
Is this a junk book?.......2006-01-01
In the name of science, you will try to prove with propagande;
if you really want to decode how junk scientifics manipulate the world: go http://nomorefakenews.com and do not buy this junk BOOK!
