    Book Description

Invisible No More: The Secret Lives of Women Over 50 shares the illuminating personal experiences of three women who have faced the challenges of aging.

Authors Renee, Joyce, and Jean tell their three very individual stories of a journey to age fifty and beyond with grace, humor, and humility, sparing no details in revealing their ordinary yet outrageous lives. Believing that fifty is not merely an age marked by time or another milestone to cross, Renee, Joyce, and Jean will inspire you to reevaluate the direction your own life is taking, teach you to be open to taking risks, and gently encourage you to seek the infinite possibilities that lie ahead of you. The three authors speak candidly about many topics, including:

    · Sexuality and the Big Five-Oh
    · Dating and Mating
    · Physical Surprises
    · Weighing In
    · Solitude vs. Loneliness
    · Faith and Spirituality
    · Leaving Normalcy Behind
    · Shifting Gears

As you too pass the threshold of fifty, you may discover, as these three women did, that it is a moment in your life to celebrate—a beginning, rather than an ending.

"For these three brave women, life began at 50 years of age when they made a decision to be honest about themselves. Thankfully, they have shared their stories with us." — Betty Friedan, author of The Feminine Mystique

    Book Description

From the acclaimed author of Imaginary Men comes an enchanting new novel about a young woman with an uncanny ability to see deep into every heart but her own.

Lakshmi Sen was born with a magical ability to perceive the secret longings in others. Putting aside her own dreams to help run her widowed mother's struggling Seattle sari shop, Mystic Elegance, Lakshmi knows exactly how to bring happiness to customers -- from lonely immigrants to starry-eyed young brides. And to honor her father's dying wish, she has agreed to marry a respectable Indian doctor who will uphold her family's traditions.

But when a famous Indian actress chooses Mystic Elegance to provide her wedding trousseau, Lakshmi finds herself falling for the actress's sexy chauffeur -- all-American Nick Dunbar -- and her powers seem to desert her just as she needs them most. As Nick draws Lakshmi into his world, however, new dreams awaken in her, and she begins to uncover deeper, startling longings in her mother, her friends, her fiancé, and even herself. But choosing between Nick and her fiancé seems an impossible task, like intuiting the very nature of true love. Is it instantly recognizable or does it need time to grow? And how can she possibly know for sure?

5 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2007-09-27

INVISIBLE LIVES is a sweet and sort of predictable read in that chick-lit way, but the Indian and paranormal twists make it good fun and add a unique element to the more predictable parts of the story.

Lakshmi Sen is a young Indian woman in Seattle with an odd ability to read people's emotions. She physically sees them (this is the supernatural part of the story but it is not addressed as supernatural--the story is not about explaining this ability), and this gives her a great advantage where she works in her mother's sari shop.

Lakshmi's life is going along fairly smoothly. She has a good job, and her family has found a good Indian doctor for her to marry. The excitement that a Bollywood star brings to the shop, however, disrupts her life more than one would think. Whenever the star's handsome chauffeur is around, Lakshmi's special abilities that make her so good at finding the perfect sari for anyone, disappear.

    What's a girl to do?

Lakshmi is a powerful and memorable character, and her story is a fun, fast-paced read. The story is quite well-written, and Lakshmi's extra abilities are approached very interestingly, as just a part of who she is rather than the entire story. It's an excellent book, but it does lack a bit of a spark. I'd still pick up more by Anjali Banerjee, and recommend this novel.

Visited by goddess Lakshmi within the womb and given direction & explanation for her life, Lakshmi Sen has a special gift of visions & intuition which allow her glimpses into peoples psyche.

Running a sari shop set in scenic Canada, Lakshmi has the opportunity to provide people with drapery which makes tremendous but subtle differences to their lives, via selling them appropriate sari's and dispensing advice..

Because of the close inspiration of Mistress of Spices; a novel by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni and eventually a movie from Gurinda Chadar starring Aishwarya; I have spent nearly 2 hours researching into both authors (Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni & Anjali Banerjee) to discover whether they are related.

Unfortunately even after extensive research and comparison, various biographies and their individual websites I am unable to conclusively say either way!

However, the reference was not idle.

The style of Mistress of Spices, itself reminiscent of Like Water for Chocolate (another successful novel turned movie), Invisible Lives weaves a story of mythical abilities with everyday lives to create a "modern fable".

As for the story itself, both style, protagonist & supporting cast - it was fascinating.

Following a fairly standard plot - Laskhmi living up to the dreams and expectations of her family, & still taking a path she can live with - it is the intimate details of what is to me foreign lives I found so fascinating.

Books written by people of different heritages can provide such an illuminating glimpse into their world - they write in their own unique voice and are mostly not even aware of it.

In example, using phrases which are never translated, referring to concepts which are alien to other cultures and implying expectations that may not necessarily be understood.

Nevertheless, the plot is as simple as any other light & fluffy romance, and if like me you are a fan of such gentle pleasant reading, then you also may find yourself awake well into the night concluding this story.

Emotionally, one does not invest in Lakshmi Sen - and I found the changes in her love interest towards the end of the book, created by the author to defer our sympathies to him, to be quite artifical and unconvincing.

A further observation is on the introduction of a character called Asha Rae - a big bollywood film actress who in the story is marrying, and comes to Lakshmi's shop to purchase saris for her wedding party.

In what is clearly a parody of Aishwarya Rai (the already mentioned Bollywod superstar and heroine of Mistress of Spices), Anjali Banerjee reveals a little bitterness and this reader speculated upon cause of said. ???!!!

Light and frothy, with enough emotional content to keep you reading to the end, Invisible Lives was a very satisfying read.

Even though I am an American I love this genre of books. It is well written, tells a story of triumph over trouble and how those involved make it through thier lives. I wondered if the Bollywood star was somewhat modeled after Aish!

    4 out of 5 stars Good Read.......2007-07-14

A lover of South Asian chick-lit, I was satisfied with this book. The descriptions of Laxmi's (the main character) sari store is lush and imaginative. The storyline is quite interesting as well, with all the strings tied together at the end, leaving the reader satisfied. The characters were also quite interesting and well developed. A good beach read.

What an enjoyable read. For those who what a saucy romance this is not the book for you although I had a wonderful time trying to finish this book in three days. I would hate to be in the main characters' position. I could not for the life of me wait to see who she chose in the end so I sneaked a peak and still couldn't wait to read her story. What fun. This book was a wonderful comedy and everyone should take the time out to read it. I hope the author might some day make a movie out of this. I think it might could fall on the lines of a good TV Series!!!! Anjali Banerjee is a goddess at writing. I loved every minute of her book. Will look forward to the next one.

      Book Description

      Mmm-mmm, microbes!

Although we are accustomed to equating the presence of microbes with disease, in fact most microbes play a vital "friendly" role in shaping our lives. It is not just that one hundred million microbes can populate a thimbleful of fertile soil, or that many millions live happily in as much of our saliva. Microbes are everywhere, and we could not survive without them. To emphasize their amazing ubiquity, Jeanette Farrell considers the invisible bugs essential to an everyday event: the eating of a light lunch consisting of a cheese sandwich and a chocolate bar. Microbes create such a lunch, digest it, and, through the alchemy of decomposition, transform it so that the cycle can start all over again. In the course of her eye-opening narrative, Dr. Farrell relates the historical significance of using microbes to preserve foods, our long-standing ambivalence about the microbes that live on and in us, and our growing understanding of their importance.

Interspersed with fascinating anecdotes and illustrations, Invisible Allies will transform the reader's perception of the microcosmic world - around and inside us.

Ingeborg Hecht. Invisible Walls and To Remember is to Heal. Translated from the German by John Brownjohn and by John A. Broadwin. Evanston: Northwestern University Press, 1999.

Most people have heard about Hitler's Nuremberg Laws. But few are aware of their actual significance. Ingeborg Hecht's book Invisible Walls and To Remember is to Heal shows in detail the impact of the laws on the everyday life of her family, her Jewish father who got divorced before the laws were promulgated, her Aryan mother, and her brother and herself, the half-Jews. History comes alive in her book: The exact wording of a legal passage (given with its date) is followed by the descriptions of the results of these orders. But there are also glimpses of human compassion, the revolt against dehumanization. And at the end, she does not shy away from looking critically at the reparation efforts by the new German Federal Republic. The importance of Ingeborg Hecht's book is also shown in its second half which gathers responses to the first half which was published by itself a few years before this new edition.

      Book Description

Invisible Lives is the first scholarly study of transgendered people—cross-dressers, drag queens and transsexuals—and their everyday lives.

Through combined theoretical and empirical study, Viviane K. Namaste argues that transgendered people are not so much produced by medicine or psychiatry as they are erased, or made invisible, in a variety of institutional and cultural settings. Namaste begins her work by analyzing two theoretical perspectives on transgendered people—queer theory and the social sciences—displaying how neither of these has adequately addressed the issues most relevant to sex change: everything from employment to health care to identity papers. Namaste then examines some of the rhetorical and semiotic inscriptions of transgendered figures in culture, including studies of early punk and glam rock subcultures, to illustrate how the effacement of transgendered people is organized in different cultural sites. Invisible Lives concludes with new research on some of the day-to-day concerns of transgendered people, offering case studies in violence, health care, gender identity clinics, and the law.

4 out of 5 stars A Study of the Social Conditions of TG People in N. America.......2002-02-07

First, this is one of the few volumes I've read where the situation of transgenderists/transsexuals in Canada is explored with a certain depth. The third part of the book (Research) is invaluable.

Thanks to Dr. Namaste, we have an overview of the situation of TG/TS people with respect to:

      Violence: Chapter 6, Genderbashing, focuses on the situation of TG sex-workers in Montréal and how they're related to the gay communities by the police -basically, how they are erased from view in statistics and studies;

      Access to government programs in Canada: Chapter 7, Access Denied, deals with the policies of the GIC of the Clark Institute of Psychiatry in Toronto -how in the screening process and help system the input of the TS hirself is ignored (only three GIC clinics in Canada can recommend a person for government-sponsored SRS: in Toronto, Montréal and Vancouver);

      Treatment of TS/TG people in these clinics: Chapter 8, Clinical Research or Community Health? -this chapter mainly delves into the way GICs are seen by the people receiving or who have received services at them at some point, in this sense it is a first;

The bureaucracy trap and how it influences care: Chapter 9, The Administration of Erasure -again centred on HIV/AIDS as a problem among TG sex workers in Québec, although the difficulties in dealing with the system are also explored.

Overall, this book is a must for any serious researcher and transsexuals/transgenderists living in Canada. The theories in the book itself (after all, Dr. Namaste is a semiotist with training in sociology) come across as rather vague and not well-founded on the research presented, in my opinion. Even so, it is a good starting point for future research.

A note: I found quite upsetting the statistics of "gaybashing" as directed to TG people. It seems that people attack others not on the basis of their sexual preferences as much as they do for their perceived gender identity. I.e., a gay male who acts masculine is less likely to be attacked than a male-to-female transgenderists who is attracted to women. That you give the "wrong" public image is what irks bigots the most. And even worse in the case of TG/TS visible minorities enaged in the sex trade:

"At one meeting I attended, residents discussed various strategies that could be employed to evict sex workers from the area. One man stood up and spoke about his plan to take a baseball bat and assault two Haitian transgendered prostitutes, known to work on the corner of Ontario and Panet Streets. Like many perpetrators of queer-bashing who target black gay men as easy victims, this attacker viewed black transgendered women as those least likely to retaliate and most worthy of assault. Notwithstanding the fact that such violence occurs within the gay village, it cannot be explained as an instance of homophobia. Rather, this proposed assault emphasizes the importance of accounting for gender, race, class, and public space in an analysis of violence." [Invisible lives, p. 154.]

Dr. Namaste had also found that gay males "of colour" are more likely to be attacked within the "gay villages" (20% vs. 9% for Caucasians). Since TG/TS males are perceived as "gay" so far they don't pass, for TG visible minorities it's like having three strikes against: colored, gay and transgendered.

People belonging to minority ethnic groups are also much less likely to go to the police -the worst horror stories of police abuse in this book are told by visible minorities, in one case a Native TS woman who was not a prostitute: "People like you should be killed at birth." [p. 169.] If after being the object of attack by a group of bigots, you are going to be attacked by the police, then what's the point of calling them?

This is one of the very few books that at least explores in part what it means to be TG and coloured in a sexist/racist society like Canada.

      3 out of 5 stars A Mixed Reaction.......2001-09-06

Namaste's main thesis -- that transsexuals are produced through systems of erasure -- is intriguing, and she does a fairly good job of arguing for it, especially in the final "Research" section of the book. Namaste also does a good job of showing how the Canadian trans scene is importantly different from that in the U.S. Unfortunately, Namaste has a tendency to misrepresent other authors, she falsely represents transsexuals as if we all agreed with one another when it suits her purposes, she over-simplifies in describing queer theory and social sciences, her writing is repetitive at places, and she often jumps to unwarranted conclusions. Still, anyone with a serious interest in transgender studies should read this book.

            Book Description

As you will learn in this book, I received from spirit a very clear message through a reading provided in Ontario. There was no doubt that I was being guided to write a book about my personal psychic experiences and my personal spiritual journey. I then recognized that spirit intended me to write of the sequence of events in my life, in order to help others to "open the door" and feel comfortable about sharing the mystical happenings in their lives. Since that recognition I have discovered a wonderful excitement about embracing new experiences and developed a greater awareness that we are all one in spirit, all a spark of the Divine. I am thankful that I awakened to the opportunity being offered to me and that spirit provides constant guidance.

I have for many years been fascinated with the concept of reincarnation. As a child I used to ask my mother, how can it be possible that we only have one life as there is so much to learn and not enough time? Since my past life experiences, I now have a firm belief in reincarnation. This book provides readers with some information related to reincarnation, karma, past lives, meditation, spiritual transformation, prayer, spirit guides and angels; and I include some of my personal thoughts about death and grief. As well, friends and acquaintances have entrusted me with a number of fascinating true stories about psychic phenomena they have experienced and, in some cases, the consequent impact of spiritual transformation within their own lives. As you turn the pages of this book we all hope that you will sense the love and joy we experienced in preparing it for you.

4 out of 5 stars Beginning The Journey.......2006-05-26

The church I attend is currently conducting a study using this study guide and materials. The materials are well organized and informative, but more importantly, this study truly focuses on what Jesus said, and emulated for the saints to do.
It is amazing to consider that such a basic instruction has to be given in any church. It seems to be of natural order in an intimate relationship with Christ that we would desire to follow his commands, and do as he did. We generally emulate the characteristics of our closest friend, or spouse, or parent. Why should we not do the same of Jesus, who is supposed to be first in our life. This study will truly help those who want to do just that, Make Christ first. We all actively lead someone, we should desire to lead as Jesus did.

4 out of 5 stars We Should Already Know This.......2005-07-30

I received this as a gift from one of the authors. This study guide was a good review of the theme after having the basic seminar, and two annual followup conferences, plus other on-going readings.

One thing that strikes me again about this is how basic and simple it is. It is somewhat puzzling that such a basic level is given so much emphasis. All the programmatic approaches, structures and activities seem to distract from what seems to me to be a natural, deep level of intimacy with God and an active relational, enabling leadership.

From early years I thought I was supposed to actually observe what Jesus did and listen to what he taught, then try to do it. When such a basic focus seems to be so wonderful and novel, it makes me wonder what people are learning in their churches these days.
