5 out of 5 stars Catching the Moon Catches the Magic for ALL Ages!.......2007-06-25

This book was given to me as a gift - a very special gift. At 42 years of age - I found this story to be inspirational and beautiful. I read this story aloud to myself and caught the magic! Ms. Hubbard catches the essence of a traditional African Ancestry family and Marcenia's dream of playing baseball. Children teach us all the time - if we take a moment and accept the lesson. Marcenia did not let any obstacles such as gender, economics or a dress deter her from her dream. Faith, perseverance and a spiritual connection are all wrapped up in this beautiful story that is enhanced by stunning artwork done by Mr. Randy DuBurke. No matter what age - we all have dreams - how we make them a reality is another story. "Catching The Moon" is truly a keepsake in any personal library!

5 out of 5 stars A Magical Masterpiece.......2006-12-21

This is one children's book that adults will learn from too.

This is the story of Marcenia "Toni Stone" Lyle, who grew up to be the first woman to play on a professional men's baseball team.

Even now women are banned from the Majors, so it's fascinating to read a story about a young girl who achieved her dream of playing in a major league ballclub.

Catching The Moon is an inspiration to anyone, child or adult, who's had a dream that seemed impossible.

The text is lively and colorful, and the illustrations match it perfectly. I enjoyed this book as much as my children did.

5 out of 5 stars Go for your dream!.......2006-12-02

Tomboy Marcenia wants to play baseball but knows the options for an African-American girl in the 1920's are limited. That doesn't stop her and in the Author's Afterward the reader finds Marcenia's persistence and love of the game prevails over adversity. Children will enjoy the acrylic
illustrations which convey the action of the game.

5 out of 5 stars A great example in a great book.......2006-02-16

Catching The Moon: The Story of a Young Girl's Baseball Dream is the story of a little girl named Marcenia, who dreams of being a professional baseball player. This ambition is most unlikely since Marcenia is a female black child growing up in America in the 1930s. Catching The Moon is a fantastic example of how determination and hard work can make any dream no matter how improbably it seems to come true. This true story of Marcenia Lyle, who really did grow up to be the first woman to play baseball in the Negro Leagues, is inspiring not just to children but to anyone who thinks it may be too late to pursue a dream. This book serves as an example to all that anything is possible. It is truly a remarkable story brilliantly told by Crystal Hubbard and wonderfully illustrated by Randy DuBurke.

5 out of 5 stars A picturebook for young readers based on the true story of the determination and passion of a young girl .......2006-01-14

In the early 1930s, Marcenia Lyle was a young girl who loved baseball and could hit, field, and run better than the best of the boys. When Gabby Street (the baseball manager of the St. Louis Cardinals) came to recruit children for his baseball camp, Marcenia realized that his camp could be her first step from the sand lot to playing baseball with the pros. But Mr. Street didn't allow girls at his camp and Marcenia's parents want her to give up her baseball dreams and act like other girls her age. Dramatically told by Crystal Hubbard and superbly illustrated by Randy DuBurke, Catching The Moon: The Story Of A Young Girl's Baseball Dream is a picturebook for young readers based on the true story of the determination and passion of a young girl who would one day become the first woman to play professional baseball in the Negro league. Highly recommended -- especially for school and community libraries of the inner cities.

5 out of 5 stars Likely to be a hit.......2007-03-22

So often we might feel that we have no control over our lives and what happens to us. Very often though, if we stop to listen to our friends and those who care about us, we might find some control that we weren't aware of. In Thomas F. Dawn's Young Adult novel, "The Crystal Dream," readers witness one young woman's journey into finding her strength.

Anna is about 15 and is dealing with a lot in her life. She's had problems with the males of our species, she's in the unwanted attention of a bully, and her parents aren't happy in their marriage, making her life so up in the air that she doesn't know what to do. Can she do anything? Her best friends try to help her, but Anna is sometimes too quick to react. Summer has begun, Anna's birthday is near, and she has the freedom to mess things up in a big way. After visiting a carnival and gypsy fortune teller, Anna tries to see what the fates have in store for her. In her dreams she begins to have conversations and visits with a vivid soul who just might be a guiding spirit of some kind. Anna learns a lot about herself and her summer of 15 teaches her more than she could have imagined. Will her parents stay together or will she have to move, again? Will she find a love of her own? Will Anna find that she does have control over her life, and her reactions to it?

Thomas Dawn has written a touching story of young adulthood. The feelings teens deal with, things that we all go through, are adeptly conveyed, leaving the reader little choice but to connect with the main characters. The plot is fast moving and opens up the world of Anna and a few weeks of her life for all to see. Readers may learn a thing or two, but will at least enjoy the ride knowing that others are experiencing many of the same things they are going through. "The Crystal Dream" is a well written work that is likely to be a hit with readers aged 12 - 16.

In Her Dreams

When Kayla McCallister leaves her ritzy job, nice home and failing marriage behind in California, she doesn't expect to end up in Parker, a Colorado River town that people pass through, not travel to. Her arrival in Arizona awakens Kayla's latent ability to have premonitions she doesn't want and can't handle until she discovers she must face them, or go crazy avoiding them. While dealing with her abilities, Kayla learns the value of friendship, renews her faith in love and reveals the identity of an attempted murderer who could change the lives of everyone around her if she doesn't learn to trust her instincts and deal with her dreams.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Terrific Story!.......2007-06-23

Like Stephanie Plum meets Jim Chee, this engaging story kept me reading to the end and wishing for more. Wonderful believable characters, set in one of my favorite places in the world, a great plot, with a little bit of mysticism thrown in with the mystery. What more could one want? I can't wait for Charlene's next book!

5 out of 5 stars An Engaging Debut Novel.......2007-03-08

In Her Dreams combines the compelling lore of Native American culture, the potent spiritual energy of Sedona, Arizona, and the wiles of a determined young woman in a tale of romance, danger, and mysticism.

When a two-bit carnival fortune teller tells Kayla McAllister that her dreams hold the key to many lives, she isn't as adept at laughing it off as she'd like. She has premonitions, magnified to intense proportions by a sacred amethyst crystal gifted to her by the gypsy. Still, visions alone don't hold all the answers as Kayla must journey through the murky waters of fiery passion, a friend's unplanned pregnancy, and attempted murder to awaken the true power within.

C.S. Engeron's first novel offers a tantalizing blend of human drama and mystical forces to enervate a spicy cast of characters.

Book Description

THIRTEEN-YEAR-OLD NICK BARRETT was amazed to see a harbor seal swimming close to the Cape Cod shore. But when the seal suddenly vanished in a crashing wave and an oddly dressed boy washed up on the beach, Nick's summer vacation changed in an instant. Why did this boy seem so very different than Nick and his friends? Why did his speech sound so old-fashioned? And why did this boy, Ethan Kemp, have no memory of where he came from? Back in Nick's hometown of Sudbury, Ethan and his new friends try to solve the mystery of his past. They soon find themselves drawn deeply into a century's old puzzle involving a blind hermit, encounters with Babe Ruth and Henry Ford, an evil puppeteer who seeks to control their thoughts, and a crystal pendent whose secret is so powerful that the only solution may be to return to the past to keep it hidden forever. The Crystal of Dreams is a story of time travel and friendship spanning colonial and modern times.

This is a book report that I wrote for my school, Bridge Elementary, 4th grade. I received the highest grade for the book report.

I loved this book because the story was exciting and full of adventure. I loved the way the story moved from century to century. It was interesting to see what Ethan thought about our world and how Sudbury (Mass) has changed since 1763.

Main Characters:
Ethan Kemp is a boy from the 1700's who becomes friends with Nick and his pals. Nick Barrett is a 13 year old boy who finds Ethan, lets him stay with the Barrett family and helps Ethan try to get back home. Nick and Ethan become best friends.

Summary:
Nick Barrett, his sister and their friends find Ethan Kemp on the beach while on vacation in Cape Cod. Nick and his family let Ethan stay at their house in Sudbury. Both boys want to find out what had happened to Ethan in his past since Ethan couldn't remember. They find out at the library that he was born in 1750 and was lost at sea when he was 13. It is then that Ethan remembers what happened to him.

He and his friend followed an evil puppeteer to where he was robbing an old Indian grave searching for the magical crystal necklace. They escaped to sea but were followed and Ethan was turned into a seal during the fight at sea. While Ethan was watching the children a huge wave tossed him onto the shore & he became a boy again. When the children found him Ethan was wearing a crystal necklace and only later did they find out about its magical powers.

The evil puppeteer followed Ethan from his time. He wanted the necklace to control other people's dreams. With the help of the hermit, a powerful magician, they stay one step ahead of danger in their quest to send Ethan back home.

Nick and his friends have a science club. One of the boys Haywood is working on a time machine that his father was working on before he disappeared. Just as the puppeteer corners them and reaches for the necklace, Ethan jumps into the box. Haywood flicks the switch and Ethan is transported back to 1918. There he meets Babe Ruth who is vacationing in Sudbury after winning the World Series with the Boston Red Sox. He also meets Haywood's father & together they fix the time machine & return to the present.

The children decide to run the puppeteer out of town. They fill their pockets with supplies from the Hermit's store of pranks. They use the sneezing powder, itching powder and an exploding cigar to make him miserable before pouring a jug of molasses over him and covering him with feathers.

Haywood's father sets up the time machine one last time to transport Ethan back to 1763. When Nick checks the book in the library he finds that the entry has changed and now reads that Ethan lived to be 85 years old.

My Opinion
I loved this book because the story was exciting and full of adventure. I loved the way the story moved from century to century. It was interesting to see what Ethan thought about our world and how Sudbury has changed since 1763. I wanted to read this book because the author is a friend of my dads.

While the fate of worlds hangs in the balance, can Connal MacArran and Liandra Tavor, two seemingly mismatched lovers, battle to overcome their mistrust and defeat an enemy vowing to destroy them?

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars AuthorZone.Com Book Review.......2003-07-19

    The Review:
An opponent lies disguised far in the passionless deepness of space ready to obliterate Caledonian Chieftain Connal MacArran. MacArran must protect his world. In doing so he is propelled into an affiliation with Liandra Tavor a mentor with the League of Worlds. Connal is both fascinated and repulsed by the mythical libido the foreign enchantress is said to embody. The green haired Asarian dreamweaver has never experienced anything to match the feeling she realizes as she dreamshares with Connal on her crystal bed.

On the surface MacArran's task appears quite fundamental. He will avail himself of Liandra's exceptional powers to find a missing clansman Garris then flee from her as soon as his assignment is completed. As with most simple designs little goes according to plan. Liandra's life is threatened. Connal faces the fury of his clan when he takes her with him to his world. The planet, which refuses to confederate with the League of Worlds has been kept obscured to preclude foreign adulteration. Liandra is no more pleased to be with Connal than he appears to enjoy as her captor. Once Liandra realizes where she has been brought Connal decides she must never leave. MacArran's absolute intractability toward contact with other cultures and his intolerance against aliens clouds his reason. He continues to oppose Liandra and when she attempts to escape punishes her then warns others of his clan against her as an alien. At times he is a difficult person to understand. Liandra is from a race that is very aware of their own sensuality. They do ultimately join completely with one man forever. Liandra has never felt any real attraction to a man until she finds herself head to toe with MacArran during their mind dream in their attempt to find Connal's kinsman. The pair is attacked during the dream by alien creatures leaving Liandra unconscious and MacArran facing the notion that it is either take her with him or leave her there to die. He needs her abilities; he takes her with him. Neither wants to admit the growing affinity they feel for the other.

In Crystal Dreams writer Cooper presents an unconventional science fiction type romance filled with an abundance of engaging characters and situations. Nineteenth century Scot-English relationships are present in a well-designed universe. The two principal planets are well developed by writer Cooper. This is not the usual science fiction offering. The romance emerges against a convincing backdrop of dreadful evil and other world detail. As presented in Crystal Dreams Liandra is a supposable personality filled with enough angst to keep her engaging. MacArran and his hardheaded notions become a bit ennui after a time. Even with my Scottish ancestry there were moments that I found myself wanting to `smack him up aside the head' as he continues to oppose Liandra despite awareness that she is not `tainting' his world.

Crystal Dreams is a well written page turner which draws readers right into the account from the opening page and carries them on a roller coaster ride of agitation through the tale and on down to the final paragraph. A nice book for a lazy summer's reading in the hammock. Not for everyone. Those who enjoy romance and/or futuristic science fiction will enjoy the tale.

4 out of 5 stars A Blend of Science Fiction and Historical Romance.......2003-07-01

Connal MacArren is one of the first of his world to leave the planet and travel through space. He would never have ventured out at all if it weren't for his dratted kinsman, Garris, who left without telling anyone goodbye. All he left was a cryptic note saying that he was going to see the Dreamweaver Liandra Tavor. Liandra is an Asarian, one of a small race who can walk the dreamscape and find answers for people in dreams. She is sure that this Garris never made it to see her, though it is true that he may have been traveling to see her, but she cannot persuade Connal that she knows nothing of Garris' whereabouts. Connal quickly tires of Liandra's game of pretending not to know anything and kidnaps her to return to his home planet of Caledonia. If Liandra will not tell Connal where Garris is, perhaps a little imprisonment might change her mind...

Liandra is determined to hate Caledonia. They are so primitive there. They eat animals and plants, pick flowers, do their own cleaning and seem to not use machines hardly at all! How have they escaped the notice of the League for so long? Even though she gradually comes to care for Caledonia and its people, she is determined to escape for there is something terribly wrong in the dreamscape. Whenever she tries to search for Garris in her dreams, she feels an alien presence that is trapping other Asarians so they can never leave. She fears for her people and wants desperately to contact her father with this information, but Connal does not want anyone else to of Caledonia's existence. However, he finds himself softening as he spends more time with Liandra. Maybe aliens are not as bad as he has always thought? Still, he is positive that Liandra is nothing but a glorified prostitute who is willing to have anyone into her mind and into her bed. With Connal determined to think the worst of Liandra and Liandra trying to escape to free her people at every opportunity, will these two ever get around to admitting their feelings for one another?

This book was interesting because it is basically a historical romance set in space. Connal MacArran is a typical clan chieftain of Scotland with Liandra an outsider who finds herself falling in love with a new way of life. I love Highland romances and so was excited to read this book and I was not disappointed. The author deftly blends the traditional Highland setting with the idea of aliens and mind powers. If you enjoy either Highland or Futuristic romance, give this book a shot - I think that you will like it!

    4 out of 5 stars Futristic Highland.......2001-05-28

When I first read the premise for this book, I thought how will this plot line ever work? But, it works very well. The story line keeps you guessing on what will happen next. The characters are fully developed and believable. Connal is the original Alpha-male and Liandra is an excellent match for him in every way. This book will definately find a spot on my "keeper" shelf.

3 out of 5 stars Very lightweight book on the ER.......2003-11-06

I was disappointed in this book. As a potential career changer into medicine, I had hoped to get some insights into Doctors lives and the ER. You won't get any of that here.

Expect some self-absorbed essays from Doctors that highlight their fears, anxieties, disappointments and successes in the ER. If you want to learn anything about medicine look elsewhere.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but title misleads readers.......1999-09-14

Good, readable, well-written book, but a bit disappointing given the title. Yes, these are ER doctors and they tell compelling, graphic, somber and touching tales. However, given the TV show ER, and cable productions involving trauma and emergency rooms, this book pales in comparison. On the positive side, we see these medical men and women as real, vulnerable humans with both strong and weak moments. If faced with buying the book, or going to the library and borrowing it, do the latter. Save your money for one of the other books on the subject.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best book of ER stories, but it's good.......1999-03-20

Most of the stories in this book are good; a few are great and a few are boring. While it is not as compelling as "Believe It or Not! True Emergency Room Stories" or "Emergency: True Stories from the Nation's ERs", it is definitely a book that you won't regret buying.

3 out of 5 stars Quick Fascinating Glimpses of Emergency Room Docs.......1999-02-23

Some twenty doctors offer stories of their times in their life when they served in the ER. Some quite touching; others brutal -- not just in the cases which presented themselves but also in the behavior of some of the doctors. One conclusion that I can't help to realize is that the "old boy's way" of completing ridiculous on-call hours is inhumane and should be changed and changed quickly. The impairment -- emotional and physical -- that many of these doctors suffered as a result of the length of their on-call hours caused some of them to treat patients abusively, perhaps even criminal. One doctor speaks of an uncooperative patient who needs stitches. Since he's tired and has no patience left, the doctor solved the contentious patient problem by threatening him and sewing his ears to the rails of the ER treatment bed while he proceeded to stitch the man's head.Interesting reading; provides a broad range of points of view -- professional -- speaking of their experience, challenges and downright blunders. Each story is very short and this is a great book to keep by the bedside to complete a bit at a time.Worth a look!

5 out of 5 stars Wow! Gut-wrenching tales by physicians with a flair for writing........1996-09-23

True dramas from the E.R., some funny, some sad, some horrifying. And these docs can write. Contributors include marquee names such as Ethan Canin, Sam Shem, Michael Palmer, Perri Klass, & Richard Selzer. Other, "less well known" contributors have been recognized by the Pushcart Prize, Pulitzer Prize, & Best American Short Stories Anthology. As a fan of the television show ER, my interest in the book was piqued by the flattering review in Kirkus Reviews. Interestingly, the editor is himself an emergency room resident training in a Chicago trauma center (just like the actors in the popular television show). If you enjoy the TV show, you'll love this collection.
