Book Description

In the ever-expanding world of hedge funds, one constant remains: managers and sponsors commission the creation of disclosure documents to explain their products and minimize their personal risk exposure. These disclosure documents can be as descriptive - or as opaque - as the manager wants, subject to industry convention and the anti-fraud provisions of the securities laws. Of course, the more opaque the disclosure document is, the less likely the disclosure document will adequately describe the plan, the purposes, and the risks of investment, and accomplish the legal objective of true, complete, and accurate disclosure.

The document analyzed in this publication, the confidential Private Placement Memorandum of the ABC Fund, LLC, is one of the more expansive documents presently in the marketplace. While not as comprehensive as the required prospectus and statement of additional information of a fund registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940, the ABC Fund has elected to meet the disclosure requirements not only of Regulation D under the Securities Act of 1933, but also Sections 4.7 and 4.12 of the regulations under the Commodity Exchange Act.

4 out of 5 stars A broad based handbook.......2007-01-10

This Handbook, both in its content and construction, is one of the most effective Technical Writing guides I've found. It is convenient to use, and each covered topic area is easily found. It is broadbased enough so that it generally is the only tech writing reference one needs at hand, and in itself is a fine example of what technical writing is all about.

This book is one of the best of its type that I have seen. A very handy reference for anyone doing documentation.

5 out of 5 stars The best book I ever seen in this field........1999-03-09

It has been the best company as I have been writing my Master's thesis in the computer science field. Whenever I vacillate about how to write or present something in the proper way, I consult with this amazing manual. The ideal answer is "always" there. It is still expensive, but surely I invested my money in the correct place. Thanks for all who participated to introduce such a marvellous product.

5 out of 5 stars The Perestroika Deception.......2007-07-05

Here is a look inside the real Soviet Union, even now, 2007. Anatoliy's insights and warnings MUST be heeded by our Congress and Executive branch! From my own observations prior to reading his book, I was coming to the same conclusions. We must not be fooled by the communist party's hidden agenda and tactics! Read this book and then watch the abc, cbs, cnn or nbc evening news and see for yourself if the news is American news, or communist propaganda disguised as news!

5 out of 5 stars The Russian Bear & Politics.......2007-02-13

After reading a few reviews, all who voted in favor of Golitsyn, I thought I would add a little information to clarify.

There is much ado about Golitsyn's "predictions" everywhere, on the web, in print and in media. This leads one to believe that there is chance involved in a sort of political prognostication; however, this is not the case, and he clearly states this, time and time again, in both "New Lies for Old" and "The Perestroika Deception."

Golitsyn's analysis of Russian activity is based upon a new analytical paradigm. This paradigm grew as a result to changes in policy which were designed to give false results to Western analysts stuck in the now outdated dogma.

Glasnost and perestroika were designed, according to Golitsyn, as politic tools to perform a sort of prestidigitation to lull and bedazzle Soviet opponents, while the true intentions and actions happened in the background.

History has proven Golitsyn's analysis to be extremely accurate. However, there seems to be a concerted effort to completely ignore his strategic analytical model, much like it happened in the 1980's and 1990's. This, to me, indicates that his model for interpreting data is reliable and bears consideration. It is through this model that he made "predictions," all which have either come to pass or will in the future (if his prediction rate is anything by which to judge the rest). For those that would like to understand seemingly esoteric or difficult to understand political moves, Golitsyn's work might help to shed light on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Communism is NOT dead.......2004-08-20

Anatoliy Golitsyn worked inside the system, inside the KGB.
He predicted what later has become reality - Russia clearly staged the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe, the KGB financed all so called dissidents that run the Eastern European governments, Golitsyn has analized the strategic communist plan in detail and yet our government is not listening and our so called media is not paying attention to this threat from Russia and China.
Communist World Domination will become horrible reality if we will not reasses Russia's military strength and the real intentions KGB lieutenant colonel Vladimir Putin and his communist Politburo have for America - destruction of her and instalation of the communist World Order around the Globe.
Golitsyn clearly states in this briliant analysis that the deceptive means of false friendship Russia is playing today
will only result in catastrofic consequences for America if America doesn't protect herself.
The means of communist infiltration and systematic subversion
of the West are clearly shown in detail by Mr. Golitsyn
and that's why he's still under direct death threat from Moscow
and he has to hide in the U.K.
Russia's connection to Islamic terrorism has been also proven
and Golitsyn mentioned Saddam's regime constant co-operation with Moscow.
Will America wake up ?
Only God knows that.

4 out of 5 stars So many are warning us, but nobody seems to be listening!.......2001-04-07

This book is yet another book that I have read that tells the truth. After reading books like "Behold a Pale Horse", "Hope of the Wicked", "Bitter Legacy:Untold Story of the Clinton-Gore Years", there is no doubt that these books are cohererent in what they have to say. Why does our country continually fail to see the very obvious truth? This book is important and is a big part of the the whole true story of what is "really going on" in this world right now. Get this book and others like it, then inform everyone what you know and can see is the TRUTH! Especially Congress!

5 out of 5 stars Wilderness of Mirrors.......2000-04-25

If you have the courage to stare the devil in the face, then read this book and see where we're headed. It's a tough read though. It jumps around. It's written on a master's degree level, or higher. And it challenges everything you've been told by your government over the past ten years. Russia is not our friend. China is not our friend. And the why's are all here for you to read. Not for the faint hearted.

During the Civil War, from 1862-1865, Walt Whitman spent much of his time with wounded soldiers, both in the field and in the hospitals. The 40 notebooks he filled became the basis for the extraordinary diary of a medic in the Civil War.

        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A First-Person Account of the Assassination of Lincoln........2005-10-26

From 1862-65, Walt Whitman visited hospitals, camps and fields of hospital tents, over six hundred visits or tours and ministered to 80,000 to 100,000 wounded and sick. He wrote letters for them. To his dismay, he found far more Union Southerners, especially from Tennessee, than he expected. After the Battle at Columbia, Tennessee, no Rebels were left alive. "They let none crawl away, no matter what his condition."

Hero stories are almost always myths. MEMORANDA DURING THE WAR is made up of articles published in the New York 'Weekly Graphic' and published in 1876 to go along with his special "Centennial Editon" of 'Leaves of Grass.'

"I shall not easily forget the first time I saw Abraham Lincoln. It was a rather pleasant spring afternoon on 19th of February, 1861, in New York City." Whitman was from Brooklyn, New York. "The figure, the look, the gait, are distinctly impressed upon me yet; the unusual and uncouth height, the dress of complete black, the stovepipe hat..., the dark-brown complexion, the seamed and wrinkled yet canny-looking face, the black, bushy head of hair, the disporportionately long neck...." He describes Lincoln as having eyes with a deep latent sadness in the expression. Mrs. Lincoln, too, when she ventured out always wore black.

At the first Inauguration, Lincoln's carriage had been surrounded by a dense mass of armed cavalrymen eight deep, with drawn sabres; and there were sharp-shooters stationed at every corner on the route. Four years later, he was in his plain two-horse barouche with his ten year old son, with no soldiers, only a lot of civilians on horseback, with huge yellow scarfs over their shoulders.

April 14, 1865, a day to be remembered, as President and Mrs. Lincoln attended a performance at Ford's Theatre; at intermission, a shot was heard. Booth, dressed in plain black broadcloth, bare-headed, with a full head of glossy, raven hair, and his eyes like some mad animal's flashing with light and resolution, yet with a strange calmness, jumps to the stage holding a large knife. After he sprains his ankle, he turns around and looks at the audience his face of statuesque beautuy, lit by those basilisk eyes, flashing with desperation...launches out in a firm and steady voice the words, "Sic semper tyrannis."

At the Cemetery in Andersonville, with its thirteen thousand graves, on the slope of a beautiful hill in June, 1875, he wrote: "And now, to thought of these -- on these graves of the dead of the War, as on an altar -- to memory of these, of North or South, I close and dedicate my book."

Whitman was an old man with a bushy white beard and white hair in the photograph by Matthew Brady in 1863. The first part by Peter Goviello appears to be a thesis on this particular book. He is an English professor at Bowdoin College, and previously published INTIMACY IN AMERICA: DREAMS OF AFFILIATION IN ANTEBELLUM LITERATURE. I didn't know there was such a thing, but then I took English Lit. and learned American Lit. by typing the exams for my college teacher/husband who taught both.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Life Civil War.......2005-04-24

Walt Whitman, upon hearing the news of the wounding of his brother George at the battle of Fredericksburg , took off from New York City to find him on the battlefields of Virginia. After discovering him at a hospital, and spending time with his company, Whitman decided to live in Washington DC. His sojourn there, which last many years, is brilliantly recounted in the simple book "Memoranda During the War".

While working at the Patent Office during the war, Whitman volunteered much time caring and tending the wounded at the many Civil War hospitals that sprang up to take care of the men. Whitman would bring the men simple treats, such as fruit, or paper, or things to read, and spend hours tending to these brave men. This book is a recollection, however brief, of those times he spent caring for the men, including some important events of the time.

While people learn about the history of the Civil War by memorizing dates and places, they often miss the impact of the Civil War. Whitman's book brings the impact of this war into real contexts. Even he, in his writing, says that the true reality of this war may be unknowable to those who would never see it. Whitman attempts to correct this by telling stories of the wounded soldiers he tends; stories of battles; and a particularly gruesome story of a raid gone bad and its horrific consequences.

Whitman's prose is succinct and touching. The few soldier's lives he manages to capture on paper, some in just a few sentences, are compelling. Anyone wanting to understand this war certainly should spend an hour with Whitman as he describes his small part in this grand conflict, for with his words, comes a grander understanding of this war.

        5 out of 5 stars Treasure.......2005-02-28

How great that this amazing book was liberated from the dusty
shelves of the Library of Congress rare books collection.
In a weird way, it's sort of like Walt Whitman's "On The Road,"
except HIS On the Road was the Civil War. It's a touching, sad,
glorious & never boring book. Perhaps the most incredible thing about the prose is how "modern" it reads; and isn't it sad, about humanity in general, how Walt's accounts from 1862-1865 are still TOTALLY relevant today, in 2005; and will probably remain TOTALLY
relevant for as long as human beings occupy this blood-stained planet.

5 out of 5 stars Superb additional material for Civil War Introduction.......1999-01-30

I read this book while also reading "Don't Know Much About the Civil War" and Lincoln's letters and speeches. What a wonderful view into the century that gave rise to this great one. If you are planning to cover the civil war, or even the nineteenth century in America, this would be a central piece to help modern readers understand that time. Whitman's prose style is very modern.

5 out of 5 stars Like a camera into civil war hospitals and camps........1998-11-06

This collection of notes by Walt Whitman written during a period of time when Whitman was visiting war hospitals and camps is superb.

Whitman gives one a glimpse of the war that is photographic and poetic. Its attention to detail, and sympathetic approach must raise a lump in the throat of even the most hardend reader.

He shows you the places, the times and the players. He lets them speak their stories through his lines. Through sadness he exalts them.

This book should be a required reading for all highschool or college American History classes.

          Book Description

From the time of Lincoln’s nomination for the presidency until his assassination, John G. Nicolay served as the Civil War president’s chief personal secretary. Nicolay became an intimate of Lincoln and probably knew him as well as anyone outside his own family. Unlike John Hay, his subordinate, Nicolay kept no diary, but he did write several memoranda recording his chief’s conversation that shed direct light on Lincoln. In his many letters to Hay, to his fiancée, Therena Bates, and to others, Nicolay often describes the mood at the White House as well as events there. He also expresses opinions that were almost certainly shaped by the president

For this volume, Michael Burlingame includes all of Nicolay’s memoranda of conversations, all of the journal entries describing Lincoln’s activities, and excerpts from most of the nearly three hundred letters Nicolay wrote to Therena Bates between 1860 and 1865. He includes letters and portions of letters that describe Lincoln or the mood at the White House or that give Nicolay’s personal opinions. He also includes letters written by Nicolay while on troubleshooting missions for the president.

An impoverished youth, Nicolay was an unlikely candidate for the important position he held during the Civil War. It was only over the strong objections of some powerful people that he became Lincoln’s private secretary after Lincoln’s nomination for the presidency in 1860. Prominent Chicago Republican Herman Kreismann found the appointment of a man so lacking in savoir faire
“ridiculous.” Henry Martin Smith, city editor of the Chicago Tribune, called Nicolay’s appointment a national loss. Henry C.Whitney was surprised that the president would appoint a “nobody.”

Lacking charm, Nicolay became known at the White House as the “bulldog in the ante-room” with a disposition “sour and crusty.” California journalist Noah Brooks deemed Nicolay a “grim Cerberus of Teutonic descent who guards the last door which opens into the awful presence.” Yet in some ways he was perfectly suited for the difficult job. William O. Stoddard, noting that Nicolay was not popular and could “say 'no'about as disagreeably as any man I ever knew,” still granted that Nicolay served Lincoln well because he was devoted and incorruptible. Stoddard concluded that Nicolay “deserves the thanks of all who loved Mr. Lincoln.”

For his part, Nicolay said he derived his greatest satisfaction “from having enjoyed the privilege and honor of being Mr. Lincoln’s intimate and official private secretary, and of earning his cordial friendship and perfect trust.”

4 out of 5 stars Useful reference to prescription and OTC drugs.......2005-10-04

This is a useful and helpful reference to commonly used prescription and Over-The-Counter drugs. It is fairly compact, not too big or heavy. Print size is very readable and layout of the pages is good. It comes out every year with a new edition. Having up-to-date information is important.

The negatives are that it does not contain information on recommended dosages. Dosages for each person can vary due to weight or build or needs as deterimed by your doctor. But it is useful to know what the average dosage is for a medication. If your dosage is larger or smaller than average it would be something that might be discussed with your doctor. Medications are listed by generic name. A person needs to look up the brand name in the index to find the generic name.

This is a good guide and a useful addition to your home reference library. It is a little incomplete because of the absence of recommended dosages. But I like the inclusion of OTC medications.

4 out of 5 stars Fairly useful and contains most commonly used drugs.......2005-06-16

It's a great reference for people that are on prescription drugs and need to obtain some background information about them. Also great for most people, because we all take over-the-counter drugs from time to time, mostly for cold, fever, allergies, and pain relieves. Personally I think the most useful sections in the book are the ones on possible adverse reactions and possible interactions with other substances(for example certain foods). Like one of the other reviewers said, this book lacks the recommended dosage. It tells you what form the drug should be taken, and in what interval, but doesn't tell you how many milligrams you need. I think I understand why they didn't include that specific info. A good doctor must be aware that everyone has different tolerance levels and sensitivity to various drugs and foods. Therefore, most normal dosage for average folks might be too much for some, and vice versa. This book is intended as a general information guide, not a replacement for going to the doctor or pharmacist. Overall, good price and nice to have around the house, unless you're Superman and can only get sick from Kryptonite, lol.

              4 out of 5 stars ........2004-12-11

Great reference, but I wish prescription drugs were listed by their trade names.
You have to go to the index, look up a trade name, then cross reference with the generic name
on the a to z listing.

5 out of 5 stars QUALITY AT THE RIGHT PRICE.......2002-08-07

The "Complete Guide to Prescription & Non-prescription Drugs" may not be a perfect drug guide, but considering its extensive coverage ... it is a clear winner. With information on more than 5,000 brand names and more than 700 generic names, it deserves a second look.
This book contains simplified pharmaceutical and pharmacological information that is designed for non-medics. It is quality at the right price! Be it weight by weight or volume by volume, this book is superior to "The American Pharmaceutical Association's Guide to Prescription Drugs". It's worth every dime you spend on it.

2 out of 5 stars Informative but not key information concerning dosages........2001-11-28

This book does not include recommended dosage ranges for drugs. Thanks.
