4 out of 5 stars a nice quick read.......2002-04-12

Nothing super special, but a pleasant short read. Again, as all Silhouette Desires reprints, suffers from the mini book treatment. Just too short to really develop interesting characters, but they were nice enough to give you a good price. JAK does what she can and it is a nice quick read.

Tabitha Graham is on a cruise looking for a little adventure. Recently divorced from a bad marriage (he was on rebound and soon found girl wanted him back), her ego has been scarred by the marriage, leaving her doubting herself in many areas.

She rescues Dev Colter in a back alley - she thinks he is a mugged tourist - but he is actual a secret agent. Due to his weakened state of being beaten, Tabby takes care of him and helps him back to the ship. He likes the softness and womanly tenderness he sees in her and encourages Tabby in this mistaken belief he is a mild, almost shy man.

Needless to say, Tabby is not happy when she finds the man she 'understands so well' because they are so much alike, is nothing like he man she created in her mind. But Dev knows Tabby likes fanciful beasts like dragons and unicorns - so he is out to convince her a live 'beastie' is even more thrilling to trap.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read........2001-08-29

If you've ever read any of Jayne Ann Krentz's works, it will be blatantly obvious to you as you read this book that it is one of her earlier works. Not a lot of information is given about the backgrounds of "Dev" and "Tabby." The minor characters in this one are very minor. Actually only two other characters even interact with "Dev" and "Tabby" more than once. I still found the book to be an enjoyable read. The main characters are likable and the beginning reminded me of being on a cruise. Even in this earlier work, there are flashes of J. A. Krentz's blooming talents. "Tabby's" discussions of dragons and other creatures reminds me of some of Krentz's later works.

3 out of 5 stars Krentz or James - It doesn't matter!.......2001-05-21

Whether writing as Jayne Ann Krentz or Stephanie James, you can always be assured of a delightful romance and that holds true for "Fabulous Beast". I note that the original publishing date is 1984; this may explain why the plot lacks some of the depth and enchanting secondary characters of her later books (see "The Golden Chance", "Silver Linings" or "Deep Waters"). However, if you've a mind to float away for a couple of hours and share a romantic adventure with a wonderfully normal heroine (she actually has hips, for goodness sake) then join Tabitha on her cruise and enjoy her seduction of the mysterious Dev Colter. You will find them both "Fabulous"!

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time on this one.......2000-11-07

I have always enjoyed Krentz aka James' books but this one seemed like she was trying to rush a story into print. She needed to take time and put some meat into this one. Tabitha goes on a cruise by herself. She's insecure and hoping to meet Mr. Right. She soon falls for an injured passenger who she saves from an alley, shortly after he was beaten. Now she is trying to make Dev into her perfect man. All he wants to do is go along with her so he can get into her pants. Too much fantasy and not enough communication. This book was just too hard to read.

4 out of 5 stars Sexual Content: Rated PG-13.......2000-10-04

Shy and quiet Tabitha Graham decides to take a cruise to live a little bit. Within a few hours of boarding, she realizes--much to her dismay--that even at sea she'll never be the life of the party. When Tabitha meets Dev Colter, she believes she has found a kindred spirit. Dev is sweet, shy, and vulnerable...or so she thinks. Dev will let her believe anything she wants, so long as he can lure Tabitha to him...

This book is classic JAK (a.k.a. James)...humorous, witty, and sexy. The only complaint I have with it is that she uses too many exclaimers and the love scenes are a little purple. I wouldn't let that deter you from buying it, however. It was still an engrossing story and because it's only 219 pages, it can be devoured in a couple of hours time.

Book Description

A dictionary? No, this is really an astonishing ark filled with beasts from a fabulous zoo far more varied and entertaining than anything from ordinary natural history. From Abaia and Abath to Ziz and Zu, from the microscopic Gigelorum that nests in a mite's ear to the giant serpent Jormungandor who encircles the whole globe, there are beasts from every corner of man's imagination: the light-hearted Fearsome Critters of lumberjack tales find a place alongside the Sirrush of Babylon and the Winged Bulls of Assyria. Some of the fabulous beasts turn out to be real creatures in disguise - a Cameleopard is a kind of glamourised giraffe -while others are almost, but not quite, human. Among the six hundred entries are some which are full-scale essays in their own right, as on Phoenix or Giants; and just in case it seems as though the authors dreamt up the entire book, there is a detailed list of books for the would-be hunter in this mythical jungle.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Source of Information.......2001-01-20

A well-organized volume, spanning human creation to modern times, A Dictionary of Fabulous Beasts is a great start for exploring the many subjects of Mythology and Folklore as it pertains to creatures of the imagination. Drawing only from historical accounts and documents (avoiding modern fantasy all together), the dictionary provides detailed information of well-know and not-so-well-known creatures. For Fantasy readers, the book can provide a glimpse into history and fantasy, and for the casual reader, a treasure trove of both serious and lighthearted subjects. If this book has only one downfall, it's that it is too short, and doesn't delve much into the stories surrounding the creature; only the info on the creature itself. These are both minor shortcomings, and are easily missed

Book Description

What do green lions, nine-headed winged snakes, giant gold-digging ants and fish in the shape of bishops have in common? They all inhabit this new, comprehensive collection of strange and fantastic beasts. In excerpts spanning millennia and reflecting the development of the Western imagination itself, we encounter old favorites like the dragon, unicorn, phoenix, griffin, and mermaid, as well as a host of other bizarre creatures. Comprising hundreds of well-known and obscure primary sources arranged chronologically by writer, The Book of Fabulous Beasts traces the development of imaginary animals as they appear and reappear in literary accounts from the Babylonian epic of creation to modern fantasy. From Herodotus to medieval bestiaries and travelers's tales, and from Renaissance heraldry, alchemy, and natural histories to the fantasy fiction of Tolkien, the author shows how these resilient beasts--once believed to be real--have transformed and regenereated through time, surviving even the Age of Reason that banished them to the realm of the "fabulous." With an extensive general introduction, glossary of animals, bibliography, index, and more than a hundred illustrations from a Babylonian cylinder seal of a god battling a dragon to James Thurber's drawing of a unicorn in a modern garden, this volume will be the standard reference for years to come. The Book of Fabulous Beasts is the rare combination of an exhaustive source book and a delightful read. Readers can browse excerpts, trace one particular creature as it develops through time and translation, or read this epic story straight through, discovering along the way as much about the history and dreams of the human creature as about the fanciful animals on every page.

      5 out of 5 stars Great.......1999-02-06

This is an excellent book for all ages. It is highly illustrated with many different types of mythilogical creatures. These categories include: mythical birds, dragons and serpents, half-human creatures and mythilogical animals. The only problem is that it is fairly expensive for it's size but it's worth it. I paid $25 for it, well I should say my dad did but anyway it is an excellent book.

4 out of 5 stars Handy and surprisingly inclusive.......2001-08-04

I think this book is closer to 3 1/2 stars. If you're looking for a thorough explanation of mythic characters, this is not the book for you. This is a dictionary, a handy guide for when you want to refresh your memory on an archaic reference. What it lacks in depth in makes up for in scope however; I was happily surprised at how many cultures were represented in the collection. In leafing through, you may find a character or story that sparks you to investigate further. A pleasant, but again rather narrow, addition are the thematic cross-cultural mythic references (creation, death, etc.) each discussed for a page or two throughout the book. Overall it's good for a basic reference guide.

2 out of 5 stars great for Greek, not so for the rest of the world.......2001-07-21

For the most part it is a good book and if you are mainly interested in Greek mythology it is worth a look. However I have some problems with it. The first is the layout, it is set up in alphabetical order this makes it much harder to find information if you don't know the name of what you are looking for then if it was set up by mythos, for example if you wanted to know the Japanese god of fire but didn't know his name then you would have to search the entire book stopping at every Japanese looking name until you found it, also almost everything in the book is from a different language and often times have different translations (lets see did he spell that with a E, I, Y, or J ???). The second problem that I have is that the locations are very general, Babylonian, Sumerian and Assyrian myths are all labeled as Middle East. It is also incomplete; there is very little on Norris myth and almost no mention of anything from Arabia(1001 nights). Finally the book contradicts itself in more then one place, witch is to be expected to some degree when dealing with stories that are thousands of years old, it just seemed more noticeable here then in most cases.

4 out of 5 stars Good Information and Graphics.......2000-09-01

I use this book regularly to look up names found in myths. The graphics layout and presentation of the book are excellent, and the book usually contains the information I am looking for.

My only caveat might be that...the book is priced at the high end of what one ought to pay for a book of this size.

5 out of 5 stars ALL the things you can do to boost your odds........2003-04-22

My husband and I are just beginning to explore the reasons we're having trouble conceiving, and before going to our doctors, I wanted to make sure that we were giving ourselves the best possible odds. This book is great at summarizing the many things affecting fertility that are in our control right now, and since reading this book, we've changed our diet, started taking supplements and herbs, and begun acupuncture. But the book also covers traditional medical treatments; it just doesn't assume that they're a first step. The book is pretty short, which is good, but I would have liked more detail about particular herbs. Also, it's written with British terms, which is only a problem if you don't know that linseed oil and flax seed oil are the same thing (I spent a lot of time looking for "linseed oil," which is the British name). There are also some suggestions that we're not up to ("don't store food in plastic"; "eat only organic food"), but that's our fault, not the book's.

        I highly recommend it!

        5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book.......2007-06-18

If I could only buy one book to help me through my struggles with infertility - it would be this book. Julia's focus is on the mental and spiritual aspects of conceiving. She offers wisdom that comes from her own experience. She is light years ahead of other fertility practioners. I used her book as a guide through my own journey with trying to conceive.
I married 2 months shy of my 40th birthday. We started trying to conceive on our honeymoon. I became pregnant 3 times. All 3 pregnancies ended in miscarriage. I found Julia's first book 'Inconceivable' after my 1st miscarriage. I eventually attended her workshop in Woodstock and purchased her 2nd book -'Fertile Female'. I loved her 1st book, but this book was like medicine for my soul. I really needed a book that dealt with the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of trying to conceive. A few months after reading her 2nd book, (and 8 months after attending her workshop) I conceived my baby. I am 37 weeks pregnant. I turned 44 in May and this will be our 1st child. Her book gave me the tools and the belief that birthing a healthy baby IS POSSIBLE. I love her work and believe that her approach to infertility issues makes so much sense.

        5 out of 5 stars A must have book!.......2007-05-01

Words cannot adequately explain how I feel about Julia Indichova's latest book, the Fertile Female. It has become a permanent fixture on my nightstand. I find that it contains wonderful advice not only for those trying to conceive but for anyone who would like to birth an idea, a creation or just a better life for themselves. I became a true Julia Indichova fan after having read her first book, Inconceivable, too many times to count promptly following my "diagnosis" of premature ovarian failure. That first book gave me hope and courage to face the task I had at hand -- improving the quality of my life despite the dire predictions -- which served me immensely upon becoming pregnant a few months later. Now facing life with a toddler, I have found the Fertile Female wonderfully empowering as it contains the general message that one can improve one's life not only despite a difficulty but because of the difficulty. The Fertile Female is an amazing collection of all of Ms. Indichova's "tools" on how we can change ourselves not only by what we do physically to our bodies but also by how we think as well; in other words, the "tools" teach you how to live life in a productive and fulfulling manner. Bottom line, I cannot recommend this book enough!

5 out of 5 stars This book changed my life - I'm Pregnant!!!.......2007-04-25

I can't say enough about Julia Indichova, her workshop, THIS WONDERFUL BOOK, and also her first book: Inconceivable: A Woman's Triumph over Despair and Statistics!! My husband and I tried to conceive for over 2.5 years. After 10 months of trying on our own, we met with fertility experts. After several rounds of fertility treatments (including multiple rounds of INVITRO) we were pretty much told that egg donor was our best option. We even met with an adoption counselor last week. The process took such a toll on us. We were beaten down. Then, something led me to Julia's website: FertileHeart.com There I found her first book (Inconceiveable), which led me to attend one of her workshops and ultimately to read her latest book (The Fertile Female). I am a true believer!! I attended Julia's workshop (where she reviews all of the techniques from her book) in Woodstock, NY on April 1st, 2007. I left there so uplifted and revived. My husband and really felt that we could have a biological child. I was so happy that following week, during my OVULATION, and I KNOW that it made a difference. I stand her today PREGNANT!!!! Following the workshop and reading her book, I practiced Julia's techniques on a daily basis. So did my husband. I literally got pregnant that following week!! It truly works! Julia is brilliant. She has developed an easy to follow plan that revives you and helps you in all aspects of your life. I can't say enough! I want to scream to all of the doctors who saw me as a statistic.... I AM PREGNANT!!!! YOU HAVE TO READ THIS BOOK and follow Julia's techniques! Our dreams have come true. I will continue to use Julia's techniques throughtout my pregnancy and for the rest of my life. Stop reading all of those boring, hard-to-follow technical books and stop listening to all the gloom and doom...THIS IS A MUST READ! I purchased over 20 fertility books by so called experts that were hard to follow. This book was so enjoyable to read (Julia has an awesome sense of humor), easy to follow...and magically...it worked! It can for you too! I also recommend going to fertileheart.com and getting Julia's imagery CD and the best thing would be, after reading this book, attend her workshop! Remember, we are all amazing humans who have the power to make our dreams come true! Listen to your heart, find out what it is you want and believe it will happen. I am living proof! PS - I have purchased over 100 books from Amazon and have NEVER felt compelled to do a review before this! Best Wishes! [...]

5 out of 5 stars Unique and powerful approach to infertility, a must-read.......2007-04-19

In the midst of my own struggle with infertility, I luckily came across Julia Indichova's first book, Inconceivable. Her story of hope touched me like no other and allowed me to discover the author's support circles, workshops and website community which I have found to be an invaluable resource on this difficult journey. I highly recommend her second book, The Fertile Female to anyone, male or female, who is struggling with infertility. This book provides hands-on techniques for practicing what Julia calls her "Fertile Heart" tools. Incorporating these tools into my daily life has transformed me mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. While there are many tools regarding diet, exercise and relaxation, the most valuable and unique tools are the mind-body imagery and body talk tools. Deep within each of us who travel on this confusing, often scary journey through infertility, there exists a powerful and magnificent life force that is yearning to be heard. We can tap into this force more easily by listening to our bodies and connecting with our true self. The Fertile Heart tools exist to help us to this, and I am so grateful to have found them. Inconceivable: A Woman's Triumph over Despair and Statistics

        5 out of 5 stars It works!.......2007-04-18

Reading Julia's first book INCONCEIVABLE was a breakthrough. She lives in a higher world and yet she is down to earth and accessible communicating emotions, creativity and fertility. In THE FERTILE FEMALE, she shares her wisdom about taking any challenge and difficulty that shows up in our paths as a gift brought to us to enhance our lives and make this a better world. Besides, she conceives a variety of tools that helped her, and many other women, including me, to overcome "infertility", be it physical, emotional, social or creative. One of my favorite chapters, called "The Authority Invested in You", advocates one's faith and trust in oneself by learning how to listen to your heart, to listen to yourself, instead of listening to all the external voices telling us that we are just a statistic number. Highly inspirational and practical book since it offers exercises and tools to travel with during your journey. Try it. It works.

          Book Description

If you're like most women with polycystic ovary syndrome, you know all too well how difficult and distressing this disease is. You know how little control you seem to have over your appearance, your weight, your appetite, your fertility and sexuality, your energy, and how you feel about yourself.

You know that doctors have little to offer in terms of effective long-term treatment. You're painfully aware that your spouse, relatives, friends and co-workers may not fully understand what you are going through.

Even more seriously, you know that you have a significantly greater risk of developing diabetes and heart disease. And sadly, uncontrolled PCOS may increase the risk of PCOS in your unborn daughter.

With the cards seemingly stacked against you, what can you possibly do?

Your best course of action is to take full responsibility for your own health. There are three very basic but crucial things you can do right now to reduce your PCOS symptoms and improve your health: (1) improve the quality and composition of your diet; (2) increase your exercise and physical activity; and (3) effectively manage chronic stress in your life.

The authors believe that healthy food and a healthy lifestyle are your best and most effective long-term medicine. Using the fundamental skills described in this book will improve all aspects of your well-being, without the undesirable side effects of drugs. Based on review of hundreds of medical studies and years of clinical experience, the authors know that natural methods such as diet, exercise and stress management have a long term favorable impact on PCOS and its symptoms.

This book is the one resource that gives you a big advantage in naturally gaining control over PCOS (including infertility, overweight, acne, hirsutism, hair loss, depression and appetite disorders).

The heart of the book is a comprehensive self-help diet plan specifically for PCOS. You'll also learn insider diet secrets that only researchers know about. For example, the authors explain two different ways to prepare exactly the same meal. One way can make you gain weight while the other way helps you lose weight.

          The book includes:
          * 528 pages packed with information to help you understand and naturally control PCOS.
          * Dietary guidelines for every component of your diet.
          * Simple, healthy daily meal plans for a month.
          * 150 healthy, tasty recipes for your meal plans.
          * Foods you can enjoy without feeling guilty.
          * Complete shopping list of approved foods.
          * Quick and easy meals for when you're in a hurry.
          * Meals the whole family will eat.
          * Healthy herbs and spices for the kitchen.
          * Sauces, dressings and spreads that are quick and healthy.
          * What to eat in restaurants, at the office, at parties, when traveling or living on campus.
          * Discussion of exercise and stress management.
          * Explanation of the possible causes of PCOS.
          * And more.

Don't fall into the trap of thinking birth control pills or drugs alone will restore your health and make your PCOS go permanently away. The truth is, you are dealing with a complex, frustrating disorder that is very difficult to treat and has serious implications for your future health.

          Ask yourself two important questions:

          1. What if you had at your fingertips a physician with over 15 years experience in treating women's health problems such as PCOS...and who was willing to share her clinical experience and knowledge to peel back the secrets about PCOS?

          2. And who would take the time to share with you a diet and lifestyle proven by medical research to substantially reduce the physical and emotional distress of PCOS?

Can you imagine how that clinical expertise -- supported by medical research and organized into an easy-to-follow plan -- could empower you to regain a sense of control over this poorly understood syndrome?

And to restore a normal cycle, be able to have a baby, lose weight in a healthy way, reduce acne and hair problems, have more energy, and protect yourself from future diabetes and heart problems?

If you're searching for additional ways to win your battle with PCOS, this book will serve you well. The author's program does require a commitment on your part -- as does anything truly worth doing. But improved health, better control of PCOS symptoms and increased fertility will be your reward.

          Book Description

Most conventional specialists treat infertility with a combination of drugs, surgery, and modern technology, often overlooking the emotional, biological, and environmental causes. Such standard treatments can be costly and risky (some infertility drugs are implicated in ovarian cancer), and often do not result in conception (the success rate for in vitro fertilization is only 22 percent). While exploring alternative treatments for herself, Shana Albo discovered that many causes of infertility in both men and women can be controlled naturally through regulation of environment, diet, and stress. Because each couple and every situation is different, Infertility Solutions covers all of the natural ways for improving a couple's chances for conceiving, from changing their lifestyle to using estrogen, vitamins and minerals, herbs, flowers, the healing touch, and meditation.
