Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Developing chracters.......2007-05-17

This volume collects Excalibur (v.1) # 6-11 and Mojo Mayhem. All are written by Chris Claremont, and the artwork is by pencillers Alan Davis, Arthur Adams, Ron Lim, and Marshall Rogers, and inkers Paul Neary, Josef Rubinstein, Terry Austin, and Bob Wiacek.

The first couple issues crossover into the X-Men Inferno event, and while Excalibur isn't key to understanding Inferno, reading Inferno helps to understand what's happening in Excalibur. Phoenix responds to the psychic distress call of her "brother" Nathan Christopher Summers, and the rest of Excalibur follows, but they all get trapped by the chaos of New York before they can help with the major event. Claremont uses his oft repeated plot trick of having one or more of the characters getting corrupted, in this case Meggan and later Captain Britain, and the team is forced to fight each other.

After the battle, while still in New York, is the character development issue where Meggan deals with her empathic shapeshifting identity crisis (she tends to look like what people want her too, so how does she get to know herself?), Captain Britain's powers seem to be fading, Kitty deals with the loss of yet another friend from her X-Men days, Nightcrawler steals the X-Men's old jet (not knowing that the X-men are actually still alive) and Phoenix checks in on her baby brother.

Then, back in England the dimension hopping story that's been building since issue #1 (in Excalibur Classic vol. 1, 'natch) comes to a head as Hauptman Englande leads a Nazi version of Excalibur into our dimension to retrieve the Nazi Moira MacTaggart and Callisto. This of course has gets a big reaction from Kitty Pryde, who is Jewish. This story also sets up the next volume "The Cross-Time Caper."

And in Mojo Mayhem the newly cloned X-Babies rebel against Mojo and escape to Earth. They turn to Kitty Pride for help, and together they try to manage a cross country trip while being pursued by Mojo's newest agent . . . the Agent! He can look like anyone and if you sign the dotted line, he owns you body and soul!

Excalibur is the lighthearted spinoff of the X-Men line, and these stories are plenty of fun, but don't expect anything epic. The character development is good, but in signature Claremont style it can take years before a concept is resolved. The Alan Davis/Paul Neary artwork is some of the best in the business, and my personal favorite from this period in Marvel history, but they only illustrated three of the six regular issues collected here. The Lim/Rubinstein and Rogers/Austin artwork isn't bad, but by comparison it seems a bit lacking. It's always nice to see Arthur Adams illustrating the Mojoverse characters he help create in the original Longshot miniseries, and to this day nobody can draw Mojo like he can.

If you're looking for a stand-alone story, this isn't it. But if you enjoy comics from the era of single issue stories with dangling subplots, when you could pick up and enjoy a single issue, but long term readers were also rewarded, then this is a good example of the time. Also, if you're planning on picking up the other Excalibur Classic volumes, then this is definately an essential prelude to the third volume.

Parsons was brilliant, and Parsons was stone crazy. I find his insights questionable at best, and deluded at worst.

Admittedly, I come from a "fourth way" perspective, but Parsons' philosophy strikes me as superficial and rather self-serving. His ideas are great for those building their own personality cult, but for real insight, Parsons is lacking.

_Freedom_ is useful as a study of the foundation of certain modern ideologies, but only in an academic sense.

4 out of 5 stars cOTO does something right once in a while...........2005-07-19

Its nice cOTO (Caliphate OTO) ocassionally publishes something decent and useful like this instead of suing people and behaving like a scary little sister of Scientology, Inc. (Which Parsons can legitimately be co-credited with creating, due to his formative influence on L. Ron Hubbard)...

The Book itself? Classic Parsons, though it avoids some of his sharper and more controversial material (ie his letters and his 'Autobiography of a Master of the Temple') ; Its a good introduction to the wild mixture of deep insight and bullgoose insanity that was Jack Parsons.

A 'complete works' would be much more useful.

Book Description

For One Woman, September 11 Sparked an Odyssey of Faith to the Palestinian Territories" In my dream I stood at the edge of a dried up pool where crumbling stone columns were overgrown with vines and weeds and scores of doves and pigeons nested and flew. To my right was a large shade tree, but to my left I saw a few square squat dwellings with large satellite dishes attached to them. I remembered thinking the moment I woke up from that dream what a strange place it was, but then I quickly forgot all about it. That is, until the afternoon of June 12, 2005, four years later, when I found myself standing at the edge of a dried up pool where crumbling stone columns were overgrown with vines and weeds and scores of doves and pigeons nested and flew."

Impelled, compelled, and propelled by her faith as a progressive Christian, Eileen Fleming has journeyed four times to the Occupied Palestinian Territories. There she met with democratically elected members of Hamas, scores of Palestinian Christians and Muslims, and a few 21st-century prophets. The pages within this brave new work contain some of those interviews and her experiences listening to Christians, Muslims, Jews, secularists, anarchists, Nobel Peace Prize Nominees, and the whistleblower of Israel's underground WMD Program. This fascinating portrait will open your eyes and heart, and you will look at the Middle East in a new light.

"You shall know the truth and the truth will set you free." -John 8:32

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Anyone Interested in the World.......2007-07-15

Eileen Fleming's Memoirs is both an extremely interesting and highly informative account of the history and current situation in occuppied Palestine. The author provides a considerable amount of well documented information regarding the roots, history and anti-semitic nature of Zionism in both it's Chrisian and Jewish forms. She clearly delineates the Theocratic Ethnocracy that is today's Israel and demonstrates though example after example how it disciminates against all Goy (non-Jews and obviously inferior peoples), whether they be Christian, Muslim or of any other religious belief. As a result of this persecution, Christains today make up fewer than 2% of Israel's population although they represented 20% in 1948. Israel's consistent persecution has forced most Christians to flee their homeland and seek asylm in other nations. Her historical explications showed me the clear parallels that exist between the Italian Mafia and the Israeli Hagganah and it's spin-off's like the Irgun and the Stern Gang. Perahps the most interesting section is her extensive description of Mordeci Vanunu, the secular Jew who told the world about Israel's Atomic Bombs and as a result, spent 18 years imprisoned, mostly in solitary confinement. She likens him to Biblical prophets, who pointed out impending doom. I recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in the future of the world, because, as Britain's Tony Blair noted, probably 70% of the world's conflicts can be traced directly to the Israeli/Palestinian situation.

"Memoirs of a Nice Irish American 'Girl's' Life in Occupied Territory" picks up where her first book, "KEEP HOPE ALIVE" left me off.

I am looking foward to the third effort from this prolific author who speaks the truth boldly, challenges the conventional wisdom-and mainstream media as she offers HOPE and reconciliation to a dysfunctional world.

Book Description

What did Indira Gandhi, Josef Stalin and Winston Churchill have in common? The answer: paranoia. Oh, too bad, you say. But is paranoia all that bad? Not at all, if it is under control, say our authors. Paranoia is a much misunderstood word and a characteristic we all share. It actually is a valuable and necessary part of our personality--part of the drive toward self-preservation. Paranoid thinking galvanizes, stimulates and fuels our competitive natures and gives all of us, as well as our leaders, motivation and guidance. Since we all have paranoia, we need to know exactly what it is and what it does to us and those around us. But too much or too little affects you adversely. Just read about some of the case studies! The authors hope you will use this book to develop your self knowledge and self control. Then you will be in tune with yourself.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Some interesting info but disappointing.......2007-08-21

The beginning of the book has some interesting concepts which are unfortunately underdeveloped in the book. The focus seems to be on highly paranoid individuals, their symptoms, and examples of them. The later part of the book merely rattles off stories of notable people without fully discussing the paranoid features. Additionally, the typos and writing style lead me to think that there was little care put forth in producing this book.

I bought this book for the purposes of finding out more about paranoia because some people close to me are sufferers. This book did not help me in my quest for more insightful information.

3 out of 5 stars One Edge May Be Sharper Than Another.......2006-11-10

My feelings about this book are decidedly ambivalent, but the split in my opinions seems apt, given the title and the subject matter.
The original reason for ordering the book was to try to gain some insight about Paranoid Personality Disorder, a condition that I believed affected a close friend. On the positive side, the book fulfilled that goal; the descriptions of the behaviors, personality traits, and emotional patterns typical of the disorder were vivid and expressive. The language was "jargon-free" and readable. A short passage on female paranoids was particularly impressive.
On the negative side, the operant word may be "short." The best information fills only about the first 40 or so pages, and the remaining two-thirds of the text is devoted to describing the paranoid traits of famous figures in history (JP Morgan, Huey P. Long, J Edgar Hoover, Hitler, etc.) used as examples to support the thesis that paranoia has a "positive side," in terms of accomplishments, although the cast of characters doesn't have THAT many redeeming qualities....
Was the book worth the price? Yes, clearly it gave me some information that was enlightening. I just wish the last 100 pages had held as much value as the first 40--as it is, those last pages have all the uselfulness of styrofoam packing peanuts.

3 out of 5 stars History of some famous people.......2003-11-22

It is amazing, that nobody from medical community reviewed
this book! It is written with the only one goal in mind-Make some money! He tells short stories of some very famous peoples like Stalin, Hitler, Indira Gandhi Nero,John Hoover, etc.
He labeled them ALL PARANOIDS without seeing their med. histories- just because he believed it. The guy graduated from the 3-rd class college and works for the 3-rd class hospital.
I hope his student post the review in his class.
This is a joke, Freid would be turning in his grave to know
who is trying to to analisis nowdays!

5 out of 5 stars An Insightful Interpretation of the Old Testament.......2005-05-21

"The Two edged Sword is the most significant Catholic interpretation of the Old Testament ever written in English." The Thomist

      A Two edged Sword:
John McKenzie's "Two edged Sword" is a pioneering critical discussion of the ever provocative problems of Old Testament, difficult to analyze, and challenging to interpret, demonstrating how significant to our Christian heritage, and how meaningful to our postmodern pluralistic world; "Indeed, the Word of God is living, and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart." Hebrews 4:12

      Book Overview:
In the first two chapters, the author defines basic issues in revelation: inspiration, divine and human roles, inerrancy,... He discusses Hebrew thought and belief and prophetic experience. In chapters 3 & 4, he reviews ancient civilizations and Canaanite religion, mythology, and character of the gods. He explains the concepts of story, oral tradition, revelation in history.
He then delves, in the next 3 chapters into Origins: Cosmic, human, and national. He utilizes the next three chapters 8-10 to prepare for his book's core, starting with the relation of king and prophet in Egypt and Mesopotamia, to Hebrew kingship, integration of religion and the common good, and evolution of the prophetic concept of sin and judgment, the eternal dynasty of David, the futuristic concepts of kingdom, its inauguration, the Gospel, eschatology, and salvation.
In the next chapters 12 to 16 he masterfully exposes Hebrew Wisdom, Mystery of inequity, life and death, Jewish prayer: The Psalms, and surveyed the opinions on the holy, and God of the Hebrews, and divine love.

      Old Testament & Christianity:
In his final chapter ; 'The Old and New' he reviews the unsettled relation between the OT and Christianity, the unity and continuity of the two Testaments, an accepted Church doctrine, but rather the meaning of this unity.
He concludes commenting; "We have heard, in sadness and bewilderment, many who say that they fear the Old Testament because it raises doubts in their minds. Doubts of what, we wonder? Doubts of God's existence, or His justice, or His mercy, or His love?... If one doubts these things, the doubts did not come from reading the Old Testament. ... Our doubters fear that their faith may become insecure if they permit themselves to consider these matters."

      Wisconsin Cardinal McKenzie:
The late Cardinal, John L. McKenzie, who was considered the foremost biblical scholar in the USA, boldly conceived, and brilliantly synthesized a 'doctrine' of OT writings, a well written interpretation of the Old Testament, and an expert evaluation of the religious values and doctrinal traditions of the Hebrew Holy writ, clearly presented for anyone interested in deciphering the theology while enjoying the spirituality of the OT dispensation. Written for a reader, "wherever his own religious belief," Jewish and Christian, Catholic or Protestant.

Written around 1950, these essays are now, decades later, still strikingly prophetic. His introductory essays on magick and witchcraft are classics of lucidity. This volume makes available for the first time all of Parsons' surviving essays, edited by his wife and student, Cameron, in collaboration with Frater Superior Hymenaeus Beta, the head of the O.T.O.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars fascinating glimpse of an interesting man.......2004-02-13

This incredible little book is a collection of essays by John Whiteside "Jack" Parsons. Parsons was a little known but instrumental figure in the founding of the U.S. aerospace industry. He played a key role in the founding of the famous Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Aerojet General. Some of his work is still classified, and there are those who maintain that much of the work credited to Robert Goddard was really the work of Parsons.

He was also deeply involved in magick through Crowley's O.T.O. lodge in Pasadena. ("Magick" is Crowley's spelling used to differentiate between mystical/spiritual pursuit and stage entertainment trickery.)

This collection of essays is a sample of his writings before his untimely death in an explosion at his home workshop in 1952. It is not a complete work in the sense of being a book conceived by him, but rather pieces of writings that his widow, Cameron, and others involved in his magickal work collected into a reasonably coherent volume.

He speaks of freedom, of spirituality, of equality, of magickal ritual, and much more. His words are sometimes profound and moving, other times merely thoughtful. Much of his work has the same sort of feel as that of people like Voltaire, Mill, Paine, and Franklin. He speaks to basic concepts of freedom, social responsibility, standing up for one's principles, and defending the rights of others. He also speaks of women's rights, sexual freedom, governmental responsibilities, censorship, truth, and dogma. He was way ahead of his time. His vision and insight in many areas are called prophetic, and rightly so. His discussions of the attacks on human rights are as relevant today as they were in the late 1940s when these works were written.

I discovered this book by chance in the late 1980s, and was deeply moved. His words drive right to the heart of issues that are important to me. In fact, some of my writings in my late teens (20 some years before seeing his work) are extremely similar to his, some nearly verbatim. That, combined with other unusual parallels and the proximity in time of my birth to his death, prompted me to seriously consider (for a short time) the possibility of my being his reincarnation.

If you like the subjects of Western mysticism, Hermetic magick, freedom in general, or interesting characters, give this book a read. There is another book, "Sex and Rockets," that is a biography of Parsons and gives more details about his life and contribution to the aerospace industry. It is also an interesting read.

5 out of 5 stars Great Essays for a New Aeon--Fighting for Freedom of Thought.......2002-02-19

This small collection of Essays and notes from a Rocket Scientist, who mysteriously perished in a lab "accident," while preparing this work, is an astounding and comprehensive dissertation on the Current lack of Freedom; in Thought, Religion, Sexuality and Lifestyle in America.

When this material was written, it was not only blasphemous, but dangerous Politically. This man was certainly ahead of his time....a Harbinger of a Thinking Age of Reason and Common Sense.

There is more Truth in this thin collection of Essays, than can be found in numerous stacks of books. I highly recommend this work to anyone and everyone. Any person who has ever thought for themselves, should read this book and add it to their philosophical library.

Freedom certainly is a "Two Edged Sword," that must be fought with and for, with zeal and courage. Parsons explains, rationally, why the False Morality predominant in America doesn't make a lick of sense and never has. He explains with poetic, scientific Reason, Logic and Mysticism why our society is dysfunctional and self-destructive.

This book is also a Wonderful addition to any Feminist's library, or Witch's book shelf. Parsons was obviously well-ahead of his time on issues of Women's Rights, and the Rights of Minorities.

It's no wonder he had an "accident" in his laboratory, considering the lack of "Freedom of Speech" in America and the lack of intellectual thought in our country.

Basically, this book is a collection of Common sense.... However, he was viewed as a radical, by predominantly Patriarchal Society.

If I could, I would give a copy of this book to everyone I met, or communicated with. Parsons was, without question, a Genius and a Martyr for Freedom of Speech, Religion, Sexuality and Common Sense.

Jack Parsons is not merely talking about something, he has something to say about almost everything in life, and poses it from a deep perspective everyone can agree with. His words are hard to come by these days as the world today is all up in turmoil, he lets the dust settle and clears the path, or shows you how to find your own.
This little book is well worth (what some call) time.

5 out of 5 stars Jack Parsons was deeper than you think........1998-04-25

This amazing compendium of essays, by the most occult scientist of the American space program, is worth all the magickal force you'll spend to find it. Written briefly before his 'accidental' death the ideals, emotions and symbolism conveyed become a sword he builds into your mind. The darker side is there as well, from the man who adored the novel 'Darker Than You Think' and 'Moonchild'. Robert Anton Wilson describes Parsons as "...one of the greatest libertarian philosophers of the 20th century." A founder of JPL and memorialized with a crater in his name on the dark side of the moon, this rare book is the proverbial 'end of the rainbow'. Find it if you can, and forget what you might have heard, Jack Parsons is deeper than you think.

Television chef Lynn Fischer (known to many as "the Low Cholesterol Gourmet") has created a guide to lowfat cooking that doubles as a crash course in home economics. In the first two parts of the book, Fischer combines basic nutrition facts with tips for establishing a "lowfat" kitchen, including a guide to selecting flavorful vinegars and advice on choosing the best cuts of meat. The third (and lengthiest) part of the reference consists of more than 150 recipes that encompass every meal of the day; each recipe includes nutritional information, and many feature tips for extending or altering the meal. Although there are no color photos of the prepared dishes, Fischer does feature line drawings that illustrate techniques such as chopping beets and making artichoke hearts. Lowfat Cooking for Dummies will appeal to those looking for new and simple ways to trim the fat from their diets.

        Book Description

If a skimpy salad doused with a tasteless dressing is your idea of lowfat dining, hold on to your calorie counter. Lowfat cooking has come a long way. In fact, many of your high-calorie food favorites have an enticing, healthier equivalent in a lowfat version. Think chili. Potato pancakes. Or even cheesecake. It’s true. If done right, bite for bite, lowfat cooking can be as generous in flavor as its high-fat counterpart. And once you (and your body) have begun to sample the benefits of a lowfat menu, chances are you’ll turn lowfat cooking into a permanent lifestyle change.

With the help of Lynn Fischer, celebrated host of two TV cooking shows, Lowfat Cooking For Dummies helps you prepare meals worthy of a high-class health spa. In practically no time, you’ll see how simple and fun it is to slenderize your kitchen pantry and get your cooking regimen in gear. From finding hidden fats to reading labels, the book gives you the skinny on:

Plus Lowfat Cooking For Dummies brings you quickly up to speed on the joys of lowfat cooking—making your transition into a lowfat menu as delicious as it is painless. You’ll reexperience old favorites like French Toast or a BLT or Oatmeal Raisin Cookies and discover how cutting calories in no way impairs taste. And you’ll get a fresh reinvigorating take on traditionally healthy salads, as well as a host of entrees:

The book is chockfull of hints on how to turn usually high-fat fare like Hollandaise Sauce and White Sauce into something light and tasty. Desserts such as Strawberry Cheesecake and Peach and Blackberry Tart can, at last, be enjoyed as a guilt-free pleasure. Brimming with suggestions for healthy, lowfat eating on every page.

        4 out of 5 stars Great recipes!.......2007-01-03

I've actually had this book for many years and still use the recipes even if I am not trying to cook low fat. I used to love watching Lynn Fischer on TV. Yes, that's right...she had a television cooking show WAYYYYY before Food Network appeared. She always gave great advice and tips for cooking in a low fat manner and her dishes were always appetizing. So, when I decided to try cooking lowfat, I chose her book as one that I liked. Although there aren't that many recipes, she gives great advice on how to trim your own recipes and is very positive throughout the book. Mine and my family's favorite recipe is her sweet and sour pork. It is delicious!

4 out of 5 stars Good lowfat recipes!.......2001-10-20

This book contains recipes that are low in fat and low in calories, because its not just the fat you need to watch, its the calories too that sneak up on you when you least expect them!

Salad dressings, bakery items, chicken meals, side dishes, you name it, its here and they're all surprisingly good! Most times as everyone knows, lowfat sometimes means its lost alot of the taste, but in this case the chef shows you how to add certain ingredients in order to make up for the fat loss and add lots of taste! There is information on losing weight and a calorie chart with fat index. Also information on portion control. Chalked full of great recipes and tasty treats, this is a great and easy to follow resource, as is all of the 'dummie' books.

4 out of 5 stars Very good resource.......2000-03-30

This is a very good source of information on low fat cooking. My family responded pleasently to many of the recipies although some were a little bland. The important thing is that this book teaches you how to make your own low fat dishes by substituting the stuff with high fat content in your favorite recipies with low fat ingredients. I especially liked the section devoted to learning and using herbs-- an important mainstay in any lowfat diet.

4 out of 5 stars NOT JUST ANOTHER COOKBOOK!.......2000-06-09

The Heart Healthy cookbook is a great addition to any library in the "new" lowfat genre. The Chef's included in this volume give low-fat cooking a decidedly tasty twist. Color pictures are not numerous, but well done, and very clear. Directions are precise, and the results have been wonderful. The recipes I have tried, allow for variation to personalize for dietary needs, tastes or restrictions. A great book!
