Fun for kids.......2007-09-22
These books are great for art projects with kids. My class is making a gift for the school using these art ideas.
Ed Emberly is my hero and has been for over 30 years.......2007-05-19
When I was fresh out of college many moons ago and I have literally no experience or ability to draw even a stick man and that is the truth, a friend of mine at church was a kindergarten teacher and she referred me to the Ed Emberly drawing books and oh my. Happy happy day for me. ANd I used these with my now grown kids. They go step by step and start with like a circle and then add the ears and he creates so many fun books. The thumbprint books of his are fun activities to do with your children that any age loves, it is just too much fun, pretty soon the neighbors will be dropping in because they heard of the Emberly fun going on at your house. All of his books are marvelous, just get one and you will be sold !!!!!
GREAT BOOK WITH FUN IDEAS!!!.......2007-02-28
My kids age 8, 5 & 2 1/2 all love making the figures from this book. It really inspires them to be creative & the drawings are easy to follow!! My 2 yr old can make his own cards with his own fingerprints.(We made thank you cards with colored ink & these cute ideas) I helped him finish off the pictures, but we all have a fun time!
Ed Emberley's COMPLETE drawing book.......2007-02-06
This book gives a thorough selection of holidays, themes, and a wide variety of thumbprints to choose from. There are step by step sections for the beginner. The examples provide good color ideas as well.
In addition to using ones' thumb, the book encourages pinky finger prints, or even using just the tip of any finger. A great first thumbprint book!
Great book, great gift!.......2007-01-15
This is a fun gift for kids and teachers. I even gave a copy to a fingerprint examiner and she thought it was a great gift. Brought a smile to her face, I think.
Customer Reviews:
What fun!.......2007-06-27
These are classic books that expand imagination. How could you not love them? I especially like how they encourage kids to draw without making it *too* detail oriented. (Alot can be achieved with a few simple lines!)
Every child WILL love to create and draw!.......2002-07-30
As a child who loved to draw - but was all "thumbs" in drawing - Emberley's Thumbprintbook was an amazing gift. Suddenly, I could duplicate the art in a drawing book and then go on to create my own shapes and creations. As I got older, I moved onto his other wonderful art books (such as Red, Puple, Orange, Green), but my thumbprints always remained my favorite.
This is a simple but enlivening art book for preschool and elementary school aged kids. I used it over 25 years ago and it is still a huge success with kids today. Don't miss it!
Thumbodies are the best!.......2002-07-30
This is one of the most simple and entertaining art books to be found for the younger set, or those who just love to doodle. I am fourteen, and I still enjoy pulling this book out to create thumbprint pictures with my siblings. All you need is an ink pad, some paper, and a pen to begin making the fun characters Mr. Emberley presents here, leaving the kitchen table much cleaner than it would be after finger painting. And since the pictures consist of your thumbprint and a few simple lines and dots, children can begin trying to make these as soon as they are able to grasp a pencil.
Once you get started, the possibilities are endless, both on and off of paper - we recently made a T-Shirt for a friend's new baby with our thumbprint drawings all over it and the words "Thumbody loves you!" Like in all of Ed Emberley's books, the images shown are only starting points to encourage additional creative ideas to come forth from wee Picassos everywhere. I would highly recommend this for all toddlers.
FOR ANY CHILD AFRAID OF ART............2001-08-30
For any child afraid he or she cant draw well.... just buy them this book, and watch how much pride they have in what they can accomplish. This book is very basic and shows little characters you can make with a thumbprint (or circle or blob) but dont let your "limited adult imagination" think that is just a few things... there are TONS of things you can draw!!!!!! and they are very easy. I think this is a perfect first drawing book...or for a child who is already convinced that "I cant draw" i hear kids say that and i think its so sad.... this book is really a positive thing :)
A great one for younger audiences........2000-11-28
All the Emberly books are worthwhile, and this one is definitely skewed toward the younger side of the 4-8 age group. Even younger than four will enjoy this. If they can hold a pencil and draw dots and lines, they can make drawings. In fact, younger kids might enjoy just making the thumbprints and watching you turn them into people and animals.
Older kids may grow tired of it quickly but that's okay, becuse the Green, Orange, Red and Purple Emberly books are for them!
Book Description
"It's a fine example of the craft of detective writing in a period which some regard as the golden age of crime fiction."-The Sunday Telegraph
The death of a traveling salesman appears to be an open and shut case. Studer is confronted with an obvious suspect and a confession to the murder. But nothing is what it seems. Envy, hatred, and the corrosive power of money lie just beneath the surface. Studer's investigation soon splinters the glassy facade of Switzerland's tidy villages and manicured forests.
Diagnosed a schizophrenic, addicted to morphine and opium,
Friedrich Glauser spent the greater part of his life in psychiatric wards, insane asylums and prison. His acute observations conjure up a world of those at the margins of society.
Customer Reviews:
Efficient and entertaining.......2007-04-06
This is the first Glauser that I've read and I have to say I was very impressed. He describes people and places very well yet economically, always the telling detail but no more. His Seargent Studer is very sharp and realistic, too. I'm very interested to read more works by this author.
Swiss Noir.......2006-07-09
Dear dirty middle Europe and the sad 1930s. Small-town Switzerland tightly depicted by a Swiss-Austrian addict experienced in the legal process. A tough, bright, crafty detective tangles with sly villagers. In the cynicism of its final vision, not your Miss Marple--much closer in style and viewpoint to the work of Jorg Fauser,a German writer who flourished in the 1980s. Try it.
Customer Reviews:
Great Fun for Everyone.......2005-11-18
I bought this book so my kids could make our annual handmade Christmas card. My kids are 3 1/2 & 7 and they loved it and were both able to do the cute designs. Our card will be adorable. (and the ink comes off of their fingers easily with a wet papertowel) I would recommend any of the books in this thumbprint series.

Fascinating book.......2001-11-11
Genes determine our eye color, blood type, and tendency toward certain diseases. That much is clear. But when it comes to our psychological traits-who we are and what we can become-few people would credit genes with a major role in human development. For most of this century, we have considered parents and the general environment to be the primary sculptors of personality, and have bestowed on them all the credit for our triumphs and the blame for our failures.
Now, in a book that will change forever the way we think about ourselves and our children, Peter B. Neubauer, M.D., Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at New York University, and his son Alexander Neubauer, right the balance in the nature-nurture debate. They show how our genes affect the way we react to the world, interact with it, and behave in many situations. The authors delineate the genetic roots of our personalities, even as they remain faithful to Freudian psychology.
Based on Peter Neubauer's fifty years of clinical practice as a psychoanalyst and researcher, and on studies of identical twins, Nature's Thumbprint explores the range of inborn inclinations upon which personality is later built: individual timetables of maturation; adaptation to the family and the environment; reasons why some children are more vulnerable to environmental obstacles than others; and why some parents are stymied by children who do not match their expectations, while others respond in positive ways. Sure to redefine thinking in psychiatry, psychology, and psychotherapy, Nature's Thumbprint will also give parents a new understanding of their children. It offers a hopeful message to us all, for only when we understand the biological as well as the psychological underpinnings of personality can we come to a genuine understanding of ourselves and our lives.

Two Thumbs Up!.......2007-09-04
What a great series for kids! It's so refreshing to see books that are both current and timeless...and that address so many important topics for kids (such as pet care and interacting with friends) as well as topics that are more advanced (such as being an entrepreneur). Johnnie and his friends are lovable characters that kids can easily relate to.

I wish there were more genuinely nice people like Bronco Bob out there in the real world. If you like horses, check this book out!

Johnnie is a great role model for little kids, he teaches them morals without the reader even knowing. This book is great for kids young and even older. No family should be without this book, it teaches kids the value of friendship and how every dime counts. The characters are great to, with clever names like Dime Store Sam and Banker Bill, this series of books really is a great gift.

Book Description
From a leading medical expert at Johns Hopkins, here is an up-to-the-minute, definitive guide to whats known about depression and how it can be treated.
Around ten percent of North Americans suffer from depression at some point -- and more than half havent even sought help. Now, Dr. Raymond DePaulo, one of the worlds foremost authorities on depression, provides a sensitive, thorough, and reassuring book for sufferers from depression and those who care about them. This practical guide for individuals with depression and their families -- the only totally comprehensive book in the market -- shows readers how to identify the problem, then directs them to the various forms of treatment, including medications, psychotherapy, support groups, and exercise. It is one of the few books to discuss in depth manic depression, the bipolar form of depression. Dr. DePaulo discusses both mainstream (the latest medications and talk therapies) and alternative paths and reveals the truth about the dangerous fallacies that abound about depression. Comprehensive, compassionate, and grounded in the very latest research into brain chemistry, psychology, and medications, this is a definitive, landmark roadmap to one of the most devastating -- and common -- mental illnesses.
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant Man.......2006-11-25
Excellent. This man is brilliant. After 12 years of depression he is the only doctor who correctly treated my daughter.
A stepping off point.......2006-07-17
I have major depressive disorder. This book helped me understand the science of how the brain works with the various chemicals and drugs. As far as the experience or treatment, there wasn't much that I found personally relevant or didn't already know or that went into enough depth for me.
The book is a basic guide to understanding depression and does not offer any sort of cure or ideal treatment plan. That's not the point of it. The information is presented categorically and clearly with the resources cited, should you like to go further. The more common methods of treatment are presented with explanations of how they work and why.
However, this book was an excellent resource for the other people in my life who have been affected by my depression. They don't need or want to know all about the treatment options and experience in great depth. They do need to know some of the why's and how's and that it's not their fault. My parents found it to be quite helpful in understanding what was happening with me.
A+ Book. Now there's a new therapy-Vagus Nerve Stimulation.......2005-03-14
This is an excellent book that I would highly recommend for anyone struggling with the depression. However, since publication of the marvelous book, the FDA has approved vagus nerve stimulation as a treatment for chronic depression. Vagus nerve stimulation is NOW the mainstream treatment for chronic or recurrent depression. Patients and their families should educate themselves about this remarkable treatment-it could change their life. I would recommend the book-"Out of the Black Hole: The Patient's Guide to Vagus Nerve Stimulation and Depression". It's a must read for anyone struggling with the grips of the terrible disease.
A Biased View on Treating Depression.......2005-01-30
"Understanding Depression" is a clear and concise view of the illness through the eyes of "a psychiatrist who has seen in consultation, teaching, research, and treatment settings some 8,000 people with clinical depression and manic-depressive illness."
Dr. J. Raymond DePaulo Jr., M.D. is not only a psychiatrist, but also a psychiatry professor and the director of the Affective Mental Disorder Clinic at John Hopkins School of Medicine. Dr. DePaulo has written a cogent book at what it means to suffer from depression and its possible causes. The psychiatrist also covers various aspects of manic-depression, but the lion's share of the book covers the illness of depression. Despite numerous advances in medical science, we are still not clear on what causes depression. Dr. DePaulo states, "No one system, organ, or other factor is responsible for depression - not one steroid, not one gene, not one neurotransmitter, and not a lesion on one side of the brain or the other. What we seem to have is...a stew with lots of different and exotic ingredients."
Where the book becomes shortsighted is within the sections dealing with the treatment of depression. The doctor advocates the use of traditional and cutting-edge medication as the cure for the vast majority of people throughout the book. It is not surprising that a psychiatrist does not go in depth concerning alternatives to drug therapies, but Dr. DePaulo covers only an astonishing 9 pages regarding alternative treatments such as exercise, nutrition, or talk therapy. In fact, large portions of the text read like a long pharmaceutical advertisement.
In the end, "Understanding Depression" is an invaluable guide to just that, understanding depression. However, the latter part of the subtitle, "What You Can Do About It," is a biased view of a psychiatrist whose only remedy are pills despite this "cure" entailing ineffectiveness and serious side-effects for a significant portion of the recipients.
Bohdan Kot
an Excellent Resource.......2004-08-06
If you're looking to learn about depression, this is an EXCELLENT book to begin with. DePaulo does a great job of explaining what depression is (and isn't) and what we do and don't know about it.
He explores the causes of depression and he's not afraid to say when something isn't 100% certain. The truth is, they're still learning so much about the causes of depression that I'm very suspicious of anyone who claims to know exactly what causes it or how best to treat it.
Also, the book reads well.. his writing style is very conversational. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who is trying to understand what depression is and the options one has in dealing with it.
