Book Description
(2nd in Dune Chronicles)
The bestselling science fiction series of all time continues! This second installment explores new developments on the desert planet Arrakis, with its intricate social order and its strange threatening environment. DUNE MESSIAH picks up the story of the man known as Maud'dib, heir to a power unimaginable, bringing to fruition an ambition of unparalleled scale: the centuries-old scheme to create a superbeing who reigns not in the heavens but among men. But the question is: Do all paths of glory lead to the grave?
"Brilliant . . . It is all that DUNE was, and maybe a little more." (Galaxy Magazine)
Customer Reviews:
Not that great, but an essential part of the series........2007-09-27
If you're a fan of Dune, this book may or may not be for you. It's definitely not one of Herbert's better works, so if you're looking for something of the same quality of the first book, you'd probably be better off looking at some of his other works (I recommend the Destination: Void series). If you're looking at reading the entire Dune series, however, this one's a must-read...just don't expect the high-quality thrills & intrigue that make Dune the high-quality novel that it is.
Dune Messiah.......2007-09-08
Again, I could have sworn that I had ordered a hardback copy of this book, I received a paperback. The book came neatly and carefully packed. Its condition was mint as far as I am concerned. In addition to its expert packing, it came in just as expected. I am completely satisfied with this company and will continue to do business with them.
As for the story itself, currently this book. I have just finished readding "Heretics of Dune". I am very much enthralled by this series and though I read "Dune" many years ago. I was not aware of the follow up books being this good. I had tried the next 2 books in the series and was not impressed. However, after reading the latest series of pre-Dune books. My interest has been re-awakened.
Super Reader.......2007-08-26
The changes to society that Paul has brought about cause complex plots and factions to spring up, and he does fall victim to one of these. Part of this is resistance to his strange supersister, who is slowly being driven insane because of what she was exposed to at birth. The Bene Gesserit have lost control of their superman, the superman controls the most valuable substance in the galaxy, an so controls transport throughout the universe.
As part of the plot, the Tleilaxu send Paul a clone of one of his childhood mentors, Duncan Idaho, who is now dead. His sister falls for the clone, and the clone is also part of an assassination plot. His wife is also poisoning his mistress.
The problem for the prescient man is how to be sure he is doing the right thing, and choosing the right path.
A radiation weapon blinds Paul, and the Fremen have a strong taboo against the blind, even though Paul's powers clearly enable him to see.
Eventually, he removes himself from the equation, as his decision on what to do, after the death of Chani.
Sequel Not As 'Spicey' As Original Masterwork.......2007-08-21
I would normally give a writer such as Frank Herbert higher marks, but "Messiah" is not the worthy successor to the ground-breaking "Dune" that one would expect or hope for. The text is overwrought with an unlimited omniscient narrative that leaves little for readers to discover or imagine for themselves. The story's flow drags due to excessive "telling" and not enough "showing." Dialog is minimalized, and character interactions are infrequent and -- when finally given voice -- are overly philosophizing and ponderous. Add to this a so-so plot line and you have a sequel to a Megawork that just doesn't cut it. "Messiah" is Frank Herbert's thinly veiled views on world (or "off-world" in this case) religion, politics, governments, corruption, conspiracy, etc. The reframing of Paul Atredies as a galactic despot whose absolute power has absolutely corrupted him, and sister Alia who becomes a spiritual icon to the simple Freman, are clearly editorial statements on things much closer to this planet than to some far-away visionscape. Viewed in this light, "Messiah" is a philosophical "soap box" that I suppose is the right of every visionary writer at some point in their career. (C.S. Lewis comes to mind!) BUT, if you're looking for an action-packed sci-fi thriller, with all the impact and imagination of the original novel, don't expect to find it in this sequel. I came away from this read with the impression that Herbert threw "Messiah" together to pontificate a bit, to honor some publishing agreement, or perhaps both. Buy "Messiah" if just to keep Herbert's Dune Legacy alive and breathing, but be forewarned: this sequel has scarcely a "worm" in it, honestly.
Not the same style.......2007-06-28
This book moves away from what makes the first book so appealing. Instead it focuses on the stupid back stabbing and wrangling for position of the king of Dune. This creates a slow book that doesn't develop characters. Where I hated to put Dune down I now wish the planet didn't exist.

The Science Fiction Book Club (SFBC): The Classic Sequels to Frank Herbert's Dune.
Customer Reviews:
Double the 60's drug culture meets political intrigue.......2005-12-13
Dune Messiah takes place about 12 years after the previous book Dune so you don't come in in the middle of a twisty plot. These would be fine to read without having read Dune first (I liked both books, but Dune was happier so read that one first anyway.)
Dune Messiah begins with a meeting of conspirators as they plan how to take down the emperor Paul and come out politically ahead. The conspirators are: Irulan, Paul's wife who he married for politics and will never sleep with. She wants an heir. A member of the guild who controls space travel (Paul can't see what goes on in the prescence of a guild member. He wants spice (drugs -yum). The Bene-Geserit mother. She hates Paul personally as well as politically. And a shape shifter.
They agree to the shape shifter's plan of psychological poison for Paul, in the form of the reanimated corpse of his childhood mentor, Duncan Idaho, and present Idaho to Paul as a gift. Idaho has all the old Idaho's memories but knows that he has been tweaked in the reanimation process and that he is meant to set Paul up. He doesn't know how and is consciously trying to protect Paul.
Paul sees the world around him entirely through his spice enhanced psychic senses. He can't see a way to escape the futures that he sees and is trying to steer things away from the worst options. He is concerned protecting his wife Chani (not politically recognized). He realizes that she will die after bearing a child, and so has not confronted Irulan about giving her birth control for the last 12 years. Chani is now pregnant, so Paul has a limited amount of time to arrange things. Many of the characters here are driven by the struggle to influence the inevitable but still unpredictable future: Paul's wives are interested in moving before the biological clock stops ticking. Paul sees the future but not all the details further away in time. Idaho realizes he will be used against Paul and is trying to avoid it.
Children of Dune won't make much sense for you unless you read another book in the series first (not a problem here, since you have both together and will probably read them in order). Children of Dune takes place about 8 years after Dune Messiah. The emperor Paul's twin children, Leto and Ghani, are mentally adult (since they are pre-born - born with all of their ancestors' memories and consciousnesses), but physically children. Their regent is also pre-born, and clearly going crazy, and running the country into the ground in the process. The twins have to deal with the possibility of someday going crazy too, and meanwhile trying to be taken seriously so that they can do something about the present. Meanwhile many subplots (for me more interesting than the main plot) play out.
A big theme here is people changing from the inside out. Alia and the twins are trying to find balance so that none of their inner personalities will possess them. Leto eventually begins a different sort of inside out change, but doesn't fully accept it even as he feels it happening. The government has become corrupt and perhaps power will shift as a result. Water is changing the planet. There is enough humidity that extinction of worms is a possibility. The freemen have also changed in response to the water.
I liked Dune Messiah, but not so much Children of Dune. Neither has a happy ending, so if you want that, then look to the first book, Dune. Children of Dune dragged for me, but from reading other reviews of the two books, this is a matter of taste. About half and half prefer one over the other. So if you liked Dune, then you will like one, but probably not both of these books. Right now the two sequels together are cheaper than separate, so this is a good buy.
The first two sequels.......2005-07-10
Where do you start describing or analyzing this book? I'm not even sure what genre it belongs in. Most people call it science fiction, and that's close. It could also be called fantasy. The new catch-all term of "speculative fiction" works better.
Take Mankind 9000 years into the future (not 100 or even 300 years, like most authors, or even Arthur C. Clarke's somewhat weak attempt at going 1000 years), and what do you have? It leaves the author pretty free to have anything be true. Frank Herbert clearly and precisely and thoroughly creates a truly alien Human society that is also strongly rooted in its past. The worlds and cultures of "Dune" are strongly influenced by Arabic and Islamic culture, along with a hearty dash of medieval European feudalism.
REGARDING THE FIRST BOOK: More specifically, "Dune" introduces us to members of several ruling Houses in a Galactic empire. The Atreides are clearly the good guys, and the Harkonnens are clearly the bad guys. The Emperor, who belongs to House Corrino, is a very political animal. That was not enough for Herbert. He added the Bene Gesserits, a quasi-religious order of women who take as their mission the perfection and control of Humanity through a controlled breeding program covering thousands of years. And, we cannot forget the Bene Tleilax, who seek the Word of Allah in human genetics and the manipulation thereof through cloning and direct genetic engineering. Meanwhile, The Spacing Guild features physically malformed humans who can see through space and are therefore the only beings who can guide ships at faster-than-light speeds.
What brings all the factions together? The spice, melange, that gives users longevity, prescience, and power. Unfortunately for Humanity (but fortunately for the story), melange is found on only one planet - Arrakis (called "Dune" by its nomadic population). The factions fight to control Dune. In the story, the Bene Gesserit millenia-long breeding program is reaching its culmination: a super-human being who can see anywhere and even be more than one place at once, along with getting frequent glimpses of the future.
All of this sounds very bizarre, but Frank Herbert wrote so well that it all becomes very believable. And, who can say it won't turn out that way? This is an epic masterpiece that broke new ground in speculative fiction. I never call anything a must-read, as I don't know who has the right to dictate to anyone what they "must read". However, you're missing something if you don't read (and later re-read) this book and its sequels. I recommend buying a copy when you're a teenager and keeping it to re-read every five years or so. The story will grow as you do, as will your appreciation of it.
"Dune Messiah" picks up where "Dune" left off and could really be viewed as "Dune, Part 2". I never call anything a must-read, as I don't know who has the right to dictate to anyone what they "must read". However, you're missing something if you don't read (and later re-read) "Dune", Dune Messiah", and their sequels. I recommend buying a set when you're a teenager and keeping it to re-read every five years or so. The story will grow as you do, as will your appreciation of it.
"Children of Dune" picks up smoothly where "Dune Messiah" left off and could really be viewed as "Dune, Part 3". In this book, the restoration/salvation of the planet Dune/Arrakis continues, and the entire society is profoundly affected. Meanwhile, the son and daughter and sister of Paul Atreides are getting heavily involved in Imperial politics, with lots of intrigue, back-stabbing, manipulation, coercion, and other pretty things going on. I never call anything a must-read, as I don't know who has the right to dictate to anyone what they "must read". However, you're missing something if you don't read (and later re-read) the entire Dune series. I recommend buying a set when you're a teenager and keeping it to re-read every five years or so. The story will grow as you do, as will your appreciation of it.

Escaping the inevitable future.......2005-06-30
I read this having read Dune a few years before. So I knew what was up, but not names and details. I still followed this fine. It takes place about 12 years after the previous book so you don't come in in the middle of a twisty plot. It would be fine to read without having read Dune first (I liked both books, but Dune was happier so read that one first anyway.)
Idaho is an interesting character. He has all the old Idaho's memories but knows that he has been tweaked in the reanimation process and that he meant to set Paul up. He doesn't know how and is consciously trying to protect Paul. Also Paul's sister, Alia, is fifteen and full of hormones. She is obviously attracted to Idaho.
Paul is at a point where he sees the world around him entirely through his spice enhanced psychic senses. He can't see a way to escape the future that he sees and is trying to steer things away from the worst possible fates: universe wide genocides, his whole family killed off, etc. He is concerned protecting his wife Chani (not politically recognized). He realizes that she will die after bearing a child, and so has not confronted Irulan about giving her birth control for the last 12 years. Chani has gotten pregnant and so Paul has a limited amount of time to arrange things.
Many of the characters here are driven by the struggle to influence the inevitable but still unpredictable future: Paul's wives are interested in moving before the biological clock stops ticking. Paul sees the future but not all the details further away in time. Idaho realizes he will be used against Paul and is trying to avoid it.
Dune Messiah is a book with nice plot and characters as well as the whole psychic seeing the future through drugs thing. It is a good book, but I recommend reading Dune first, only because this book is so dark. If you liked Dune then Dune Messiah will live up to your expectations.

Customer Reviews:
A pleasant surprise.......2006-06-22
I never bought a Buddhist book before. I just found this while perusing in a book store. It contains brief passages that fit on tiny pages. They made so much sense as I began reading them on my feet that I felt compelled to buy it. Later I felt a touch of "buyer's remorse" until I began reading it again today. It is indeed a simple, practical guide to dealing with day-to-day vicissitudes (get out your dictionary) that does not conflict with my beliefs. It only conflicts with my own preconceptions of what the book was when I first saw it on the shelf.
Teaser book for the Power of Compassion.......2005-06-01
This litle book of wisdom is a compilation of extracts from the "Power of Compassion". I give it a 3 stars because I thought it was a compilation of selected sayings from all the books and/or interviews. However, every Dalai Lama's book to me is a precious fountain of wisdom and I love all of them but I am just dissapointed with this one in terms of publication.
Useful advice!.......2004-04-22
An excellent little book filled with advice from the Lama's best writings. Good insight for persons from any religion or any situation. Highly recommended!
The BEST book!.......2004-03-02
I read this book daily. Easy to use, portable, and full of helpful insights. Always helps me put things in the right perspective. I give this as gifts just because I love this book so much!
My Favorite Dalai Lama Book So Far.......2004-01-13
(4.75 Stars)
I've read a few books by His Holiness the Dalai Lama so far and honestly I've struggled through all of them.
The Dalai Lama's Book Of Wisdom is the best one I`ve read to date. It's the easiest to read as well as being very simple and at the same time deep in it's content.
It's divided into 4 short wonderful sections:
Contentment, Joy and Living Well
Facing Death and Dying
Dealing With Anger and Emotion
Giving and Receiving
It's one of those books that you can keep by your night table or in your meditation area or wherever and take a look at it every so often.
The cover is so warm, inviting and peaceful that I might just have to get another copy, cut the cover out and frame it.

Living Wisdom With His Holiness the Dalai Lama
ASIN: 1741100313 |
Book Description
These inspirational quotes from the Dalai Lama have been selected to give comfort, courage and peace of mind. By heeding their message, the reader will be able to look within to find serenity and follow a path of peace and harmony. An attractive, stylish pack of cards, each features one quote from the Dalai Lama.
Customer Reviews:
Insightful & Important Quote Cards.......2006-05-14
"Words of Wisdom" is a nice boxed set of 50 lamenated cards - each with a particular Dalai Lama quote, as well as 1 more card which describes the history & life of this special man.
I've found each of these quotes to be both insightful & usable. Usable because they are ideas that you can put into action within your own life relatively quickly. I can only imagine how our world would change if everyone put even just a few of these ideas into practice!
There are probably many different ways these cards can be used, but I chose to read them through all at once, and then I plan to keep them by my couch, and read 1 or 2 per week - pondering on them for a little while, and looking for ways to implement them within my own life.
In case you're wondering what types of quotes are included, here are a few of my favorites:
"If you can, help others. If not, then at least refrain from hurting others."
"Developing a kind heart does not involve any of the sentimental religiosity normally associated with it. It is for everyone, irrespective of race, religion, or political affiliation. It is for anybody who considers themself a member of the human family."
"Every person has the same potential for inner tranquility, but negative forces such as fear, suspicion, selfishness and self-hatred can destroy inner peace."
"If you are showing love to your fellow human being, you are showing love to your God."
Overall, if you are looking for a set of insightful "reminder" cards, than I would highly recommend "Words of Wisdom" to you.

Book Description
Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, is respected and loved, not only by the people of Tibet, but also by millions of people around the world. Born into a peasant family, the Dalai Lama was two years old when he was recognized as the reincarnation of his predecessor. WORDS OF WISDOM captures some of the Dalai Lama's most sage and sensible thoughts on topics that range from global peace to the meaning of life and compassion. Here the Tibetan spiritual leader's words resonate with everyone from world leaders to the common man.
Quotes from the Dalai Lama:
"My religion is very simple. My religion is kindness."
"A learned person will become noble only when he or she has put into practice what has been learned, instead of just mere words."
Customer Reviews:
Needs more depth.......2006-02-25
This is a nice little book to keep on your coffee table or bedside, but it really lacks depth. The Dalai Lama is so good at explaining the meaning of life, I often go out of my way to read his writings. This collection just left me a little flat, no disrespect to His Holyness.
Ocean of Wisdom.......2001-12-02
In Tibetan, the title "Dalai Lama" means "Ocean of Wisdom." After reading this collection of enlightening quotes, I believe that the phrase will be easier to comprehend.
The author, Ms. Gee, superbly provides a concise selection of inspirational thoughts from one of the great thinkers of our time, His Holiness, the Dalai Lama. The quotes contain personal reflections from his own life, along with observations about the human spirit. The quotes range from incisive one liners, along with more detailed reflections. The reader will discover humor, candor, and most of all, compassion.
The book is small, and could be read over a lunch break. But to truly digest its meanings, no doubt you will read it many times. The simplicity in the message, along with the depth of compassion, will enlighten and provide solace to the reader.
Thank you for the opportunity to review this book.

In the Dalai Lama's brother recalls the details of his life: his childhood, his recognition as a reincarnated lama, the story of his brother, and the exile of thousands of Tibetans from their homeland.
Customer Reviews:
a very personal look at life in Tibet before the occupation.......1998-09-11
Of all the books I've read on Tibet (about 6), this stands out as the most personal account. Thubten Jigme Norbu, eldest brother of the Dalai Lama tells in tender detail about his childhood as the son of Tibetan peasants, his discovery as an incarnate lama, and his life in the Buddhist monasteries. It's interesting to read about this earlier perspective of the Dalai Lama's family members. Thubten Jigme Norbu learned of his brother's discovery as the Dalai Lama, and of his flight from Tibet to India from a distance. He mentions that because of the great differences in age, and the distance between their home and the monasteries where they were installed, the first time he and all his brothers ever sat down to dinner together was after the Chinese occupation. I really enjoyed reading about the little details of his early life, and the great amount of emotion in his story.
A moving account of life in Tibet before the occupation.......1998-02-02
What came across in this story of Tibetan life before and after the Chinese occupation, is the sweet, gentle, and loving nature of the two authors. This is the story of a tragedy, but is not depressing. I've been recommending this book to friends because it is very uplifting and encouraging, besides being very readable. The Tibetans really had something in their culture that was of value, a pervading spirituality that was cheerful and peaceful. And yet, they didn't feel any need to convert others or force their religion on anyone. The authors of "Tibet is My Country" don't address the corruption in the Tibetan government or other problems, but those issues are realistically addressed by the Dalai Lama himself in "Freedom in Exile." This is a light charming nostalgic look at a lost way of life.
Book Description
Originally written for Tibetan lay people, Opening the Eye of New Awareness is a succinct, thorough overview of the doctrines of Buddhism as they have been practiced for a thousand years in Tibet. In his first book on Buddhist philosophy to appear in English, the Dalai Lama discusses the need for religious practice and the importance of kindness and compassion, and a new introduction by the translator places these teachings in their proper historical context. Completed in 1963, just four years after his escape from Tibet and four years after completing his religious education, it is a work of consummate scholarship — not an edited transcript of public lectures, but His Holiness's own summation of Buddhist doctrine and practice. Nowhere in his many subsequent works does one find a more clear and concise exposition of the essentials of Buddhist thought.
Customer Reviews:
Masterful introduction........2006-03-13
This is the thesis of H. H. The Dalai Lama. Giving a strong foundation in the basic principles of Buddhism, this book builds to explain in detail the various states of meditation and connects each point to the other for a grand and wonderful whole picture.
This powerful book is short enough to be read in one day, but profound enough to be studied for years. And as always it retains the warm and straight foreward manner in which this wonderful author is known for teaching. Also for those unfamiliar with the Dalai Lama's other books, most of them are compilations from lectures, etc. This book was actually written by him.
Blessings and peace to all beings!
A significant and valued contribution to Buddhist Studies........2000-05-05
Opening The Eye Of New Awareness was written by the Dalai Lama in 1963, four years after his escape from Tibet and the communist Chinese. Opening The Eye Of New Awareness was written for both Tibetan lay people and westerners, and provides a basic summation of Buddhist doctrines and practices as they were practiced in Tibet for more than a thousand years. Opening The Eye Of New Awareness is a very highly recommended work of Buddhist scholarship, wisdom, and compassion. This Wisdom Publications edition is enhanced with a new introduction by Professor Donald Lopez which provides valuable insight into the historical and philosophical context of His Holiness' writings.
Product Description

Simple but not for Everyone.......2007-02-17
This book is very good for someone that wants to know about the Darma and what Dalai Lama is all about without to many historical details. Its good but not for everyone. Sadly i am not of the everyone. I found this book a bit boring and naive, it good to try to teach the world something but as a University student with some courses in Psychology the perception of each of us is different. LOVE, WISDOM, COMPACTION are buzzwords and perceived by each one differently. Naive for me lets see for you!!!
