      Book Description

In this elegant and thought-provoking memoir, Dawn Prince-Hughes traces her personal growth from undiagnosed autism to the moment, as a young woman, when she entered the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle and became immediately fascinated with the gorillas. By observing them and, later, working with them, Prince-Hughes was finally able to emerge from her solitude and connect to living beings in a way she had never previously experienced.

More than a story of autism, Songs of the Gorilla Nation is a poignant, beautifully written exploration of the rich landscape of human emotion and the ways we learn to love.

4 out of 5 stars Gorrila my dreams.........2007-04-08

I just finished reading "Songs of the Gorilla Nation", by Dawn Prince-Huges. I found it very interesting, (especially the parts about the gorillas), but also very disturbing.

Dawn is about my age, so we share having grown up with Asperger's Syndrome in a time when autism, and especially AS, weren't really recognized---especially in women---and it's subsequent late diagnosis. I guess I found it disturbing because of the many parallels in our lives, and the bad memories they brought up for me.

She mentions feeling guilty about being envious of her relative who was just diagnosed with AS, because of all the slack people cut him, and all the help he is getting. I also have a newly diagnosed nephew, and I can totally sympathize with her jealousy. If I had gotten 1/10th the understanding and help that he gets, well...who knows how much pain I might have been spared?

I also liked her point about how hard she works to act "normal", and how frustrating it is for her because people don't believe her when she says she's autistic. They think she's making excuses for being abrupt or uncaring or the million other things "normal" people accuse us of. Sort of a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation.

I REALLY sympathized when she spoke of how she has been criticized for her
perseveration, as I have run into that a lot.

I liked the book and I recommend it with some provisos: If you are on the spectrum, it may bring up bad stuff for some of you---especially if you're a woman. It's a little patchy -she skips around a bit and leaves out some background info that I would have found interesting/helpful. The insights into the gorilla mind are absolutely fascinating, and very sad.

A good read if you can handle it---I'm still having fallout.

4 out of 5 stars Overcoming multiple hurdles to lead a fulfilling life.......2006-03-29

This is the autobiography of a woman who not only overcame the challenges posed by autism but also came to terms with her lesbianism and embraced both things as part of her life.

Growing up different - autistic AND gay - in a small town was dreadful, and she left at 16. Her description of the extra difficulties faced by a homeless autistic was frightening, but she managed to climb out of that hole anyway.

I would have liked to have read more details about her college life and how she managed to earn a Ph.D., largely by correspondence, from a Swiss university.

She now lives in the Pacific Northwest with her life partner and their son, borne by the partner from an anonymous sperm donor who was likely as colorful as they are.

      4 out of 5 stars Recommended.......2006-02-11

This is not just another autistic auto-biography. In talking about her life the author is also talking about her work with and her experiences of Gorillas, and what she has learned from them, creating as a result a thoughtful and intelligent book not just about one person but about what it is to be autistic and what it is to be human.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating look at autism AND gorillas.......2006-01-03

I thought the title was a metaphor, but it was actually quite literal. This book provides a fascinating view of the life and coping strategies of a "high-achieving autistic." It also provides insight into the lives and societies of gorillas. This book could be enjoyed for either reason. One of the best patient autobiographies I have read.

      5 out of 5 stars Spellbinding.......2005-12-18

I was spellbound by Songs of the Gorilla Nation, a beautifully written memoir of a young woman who has Asperger's Syndrome, a mild form of autism. Although she has difficulty communicating and interacting in person, she is a remarkably eloquent writer, and is able to describe and provide profound insight into the thought processes and experiences of people who have the syndrome.

She describes her syndrome as a sensory filter malfunction (interestingly enough, many people with Autism and Asperger's have asthma and terrible allergies, which can be seen as other types of 'filter' disorders). For her, to experience the world is to drown in synesthetic sensory overload. Overwhelmed, unable to process the tidal wave of stimuli, she escapes the painful barrage through obsessive compulsive behavior, repetitive actions, and solipsism. As a child she was unable to connect normally with other people and was incapable of picking up on normal social cues. Although not cognitively or verbally delayed, she was socially helpless. Blunt, inadvertantly rude, and always "different,' she was a vulnerable target for vicious schoolmates and even teachers. She suffered greatly as a tormented, confused social outcast.

Completely alienated, she dropped out of school at 16 and was moved to Seattle and became homeless, eating out of garbage cans to survive. She eventually became an exotic dancer, and with her first paycheck visted the Seattle zoo because she had always found solace in animals. There she discovers an almost mystical connection with the gorillas, and for the first time experiences empathy and connection with another primate. Adept at shutting her senses off, she is able to focus her brain like a laser, and with a formidable singlemindedness observed and learned everything she could about them. Through studying their social interactions, and from the relationships she develops with the gorillas, she learns how to interact with humans. She credits the gorillas with "civilizing" her, and forms deep, communicative relationships with some of them. She becomes involved with the zoo and eventually is able to earn her PhD in Interdisciplinary Anthropology, form a relationship with a significant other, have a child, and become an activist for gorillas. Now she works to bridge the worlds between ape and human as well as autistic and normal people.

Although she can "pass" now as a normal person, there are still some things about human society that counfound her, although I can certainly see why.

"It is hard to express the horror I feel when I am out at a parade or carnival (already a sensory nightmare) and I see a clown coming. The garish colors of an exaggerated smile, the electric daggers that are rainbow wigs, the oversized hands and feet: all of these make me want to run at top speed for the nearest exit. If I can't get away, I sometimes feel like I want to attack the clown."

      Amen, sister. Amen.

"The Succubus was newly born, nurtured by the loving care of a horned prince from the pummeled soul of a camp-following whore (who had, in fleshy life, serviced one of Napoleon's best officers). With skilled hand and eye, like a master jeweler, he fashioned his child from this twisted spirit, purifying and distilling her ... burning and sculpting this ghost of a once human thing into a crimson-skinned siren--her form holding the secret fire of cinnabar and the muted light of a November sunset."

According to Michael Marano, there are two great powers in the depths of Hell. Belial, the Unbowed One, is the horned prince who treasures beauty--the beauty of individual human souls, the beauty of a future when all is "despair and the terror of the omnipresent sublime." Leviathan, the Enfolded One, is an enormous armored worm, a blind idiot whose only purpose is the perpetuation of ugliness--the banality of evil, human souls entrapped in a gross, undifferentiated mass. The battle between these two comes to a head in Boston, at the end of 1990, the dawn of the Gulf War. The combatants are a newborn succubus and a handful of benighted human beings. The backdrop is the darkness of the River Charles, the lavender-gray of the winter sky, and the millions of lonely voices of the city.

Dawn Song is an ambitious first novel, enriched by the author's grad school background in medieval history, alchemy, and the kabbalah. Marano's measured, often lyrical prose uses a host of gritty details to evoke the desperation of a handful of Bostonians--their unique, yet sadly predictable, plights, and their multilayered inner worlds. The complex plot is skillfully woven together around the themes of evil-as-beauty vs. evil-as-ugliness. The book's only flaw is that the ending is rather muddled, but you'll have been treated to so many poignant moments and amazing horrors by the time you get there, you'll hardly mind. --Fiona Webster

        Book Description

Dawn Song is a darkly erotic exploration of supernatural evil in very human circumstances. Lawrence is an invisible bookstore clerk in Boston, drawn through no choice of his own into the greatest conflict of all--a struggle for dominance between two of the most powerful devils in Hell.

As the media frenzy of the Gulf War buildup enthralls the city, Lawrence feels the presence of something ethereal and beautiful that has come to Boston, as he has, in search of fulfillment and love everlasting. If he only knew what it was...

5 out of 5 stars BEST HORROR NOVEL I'VE READ IN YEARS. .......2006-02-16

Genuinely frightening story of unforgettable 3-dimensional characters in combat with devils. Beautifully disturbing, this dark tale will stick in your mind for many years.

        2 out of 5 stars Meh........2006-01-19

An interesting story, but the author tried to do too much in 400 pages. Too many characters and too many voices resulted in a somewhat awkward tale full of flat, one-note caricatures. At first, I found it somewhat misogynistic, as the first hundred pages lacked a single female character that wasn't a monster, a nutjob, or a complete waste of oxygen; as I read on, I realized that the male characters weren't any better, there were just more of them. Being un-Christian, and especially un-Catholic, I just didn't "get" a lot of the horror aspects of this book, either. Ho-hum, the Succubus is killing someone else now, next? This is the author's first novel, though, so maybe the next attempt will be better. Not a horrible book, but not compelling enough to take with me to finish on a plane.

3 out of 5 stars Too Many Story Lines.......2005-07-07

Michael Marono is a superb writer. His style is beautiful. His descriptive prose is original and does nothing to deviate from the story, in fact, it enhances it. My problem with the book was that there was simply too many characters. It got real annoying trying to remember names and storylines. Plus, I hated when the author would begin a new segment with three or four paragraphs of descriptive writing without informing the reader of who the heck he was talking about. Dawn Song is a good solid story that comes across as convoluted at times.

4 out of 5 stars A cut above the ordinary.......2005-04-03

I see I'm chiming in late with a review of Dawn Song, published in 1998, but I just recently discovered it. I read the other reviews with interest and agree with most. This is kind of like Ann Rice meets Martin Amis with a strong nod to TS Eliot and Yeats -- all of which makes for a compelling if wordy read, an apocalyptic vision with a unique supernatural twist where evil battles evil and good is just as elusive and undefinable as it seems to be in the "real" world. The succubus is by far the most interesting character in the book, and the best anti-hero I've read in a long time. Evil and blood thirsty, she is nevertheless sympathetic, and I found myself, strangely, rooting for her in the end. The human secondaries don't feel as well developed or nearly as interesting. The writing is often lovely but just as often a bit self-conscious and overdone. Although I did consider that perhaps the author's reliance on simile and metaphor reflected the notion that nothing is exactly as it seems - hence, one thing is like another, but not quite what it should be at first glance.
Anyhow, while not a gripping read, and not scary, this is certainly an intelligent, unique and worthwhile read. I was disappointed not to find anything new by the author.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it all!.......2001-10-04

As a fan of the horror genre I am very often forced to sit through a book by a well known author that although has the major affect of scaring me out of my wits, rarely gets deep into my own personal life. Mr. Marano has succeeded where others have failed me!

From the moment I picked this book up, I just couldn't put it down until I finished the story.

The story of two Princes of Hell each trying to take over the world was as gripping as it was frightening, and left me wanting more from this author. His style of prose was just amazing.

Of course the real good stuff is the emotional roller coaster you get the privilege to be on from almost page one!
This book takes you everywhere, from sorrow to hopeful, and taking little pitstops at each emotion along the way.

With characters I could really feel for, the struggle for Earth was just a beautiful mix of great insight and moments of pure suspense.
Pick it up if you can, it's a great read!

        Book Description

Shared resources, such as the Internet, have created a highly interconnected cyber-infrastructure. Critical infrastructures in domains such as medical, power, telecommunications, and finance are highly dependent on information systems. These two factors have exposed our critical infrastructures to malicious attacks and accidental failures. Many malicious attacks are achieved by malicious code or malware, such as viruses and worms. Given the deleterious affects of malware on our cyber infrastructure, identifying malicious programs is an important goal. Unfortunately, malware detectors have not kept pace with the evasion techniques commonly used by hackers, i.e., the good guys are falling behind in the arms race.

Malware Detection captures the state of the art research in the area of malicious code detection, prevention and mitigation.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars new ideas, but expensive.......2007-04-09

The methods in this book give a view of the state of the art in fighting malware. Written at a strong technical level for people wanting to detect viruses, worms, Trojans and other net dangers. The authors draw together ideas from a wide variety of sources.

One aspect is that the simple idea of virus signatures is under increasing assault from polymorphic viruses that make room within their bodies to insert random bit sequences. Which means that behavioural detection schemes now become more important. In general, these can be much harder to do, than simply finding a signature of a file and then comparing it against a blacklist. This can be done without running the file. A very safe approach. But some behavioural methods might involve having to run the file in a sandbox. Which is more elaborate, and might have the possibility that the binary might do unwanted things or even break out of a badly coded sandbox.

You can consider the text as a good sequel to books that have already been out for a few years, like "Malware: Fighting Malicious Code" by Skoudis and Zeltser, or "Counter Hack Reloaded" by Skoudis and Liston. One obstacle might be the list price of $139. Unfortunately, this is typical of the publisher's offerings, which have a specialised and limited audience. Still, the price can be reasonable, if it exposes you to just one new idea that you would not otherwise have encountered.

I've had these books for years but I think I've read each book atleast three of four times! The characters seem to come to life and the entire background is a lesson in 19th century Irish and American history. If you like books like the Zion Covenant and Chronicles, you'll love these books too!

I bought this book entirely on a whim and it absolutely captivated me-- I passionately love all things Irish, which usually makes me very critical, but this entire series does not disappoint! There aren't enough stars to tell everyone just how much i have enjoyed this series. In fact, I have been rationing myself to make the series last as long as I can... I can't bring myself to read book five and be finished! It's so good to find a book that pulls me into it like these do-- it seems rare these days. Wonderful, wonderful book... an absolute must-read!

My libraian pointed out the series to me and as soon as I absorbed into them imediatly! At the end of the 5th book I found myself craving more. Irish history (and all other European history) has facinated me and I can't stop taking in all the information historical books have to provide. I suggest this book to any one who enjoys historcal literature (fiction or non).

These books are the best I've ever read! I couldn't put them down. Once I got into the first book, I burned through the series. I've always been a fast reader, but even I was surprised how fast I read these books. I started the series on Saturday and was finished by Thursday. Since then I've read the books, especially my favorites, the last two, several times. My favorite character is Annie, Morgan Fitzgerald's adopted daughter. I reccomend this series to anyone who likes historical fiction. My only disappointment with these books came after I read the last sentance of "Dawn of the Golden Promise" and I realized that it was over! A fantastic series!

This was a good tale. As best as i can tell,he is geographically correct, accurate on the dates, knows the equiptment used by the calvary and the various native tribes, and can even tell you some of the distinctions between them. He paints a vivid picture of the landscape, the forts, and all the various peoples of the time. the mule skinners, the fort indians versus the free indians, etc. I enjoyed the whole story until we get to where our main man meets one of the mountain men, who has been shot in the throat, and can not talk other than sign talking. Then he encounters him later with the tribe that he is married into, and our main man and him have extended conversations, but no mention anywhere about how he all of a sudden got his ability to speak back. Or that they are managing to do all of this personal conversating with only sign talk on the older mans part and our guy is speaking verbally. Maybe i missed it but it sure bugged me. The descriptions of the battles on the Rosebud and later on the Greasy grass are very well done and also well researched. the only other book that i have read that is as good or possibly a bit better trying to get the native side of the coin are Son of the Morning Star, and considering the size of that, this one is a better flowing story. I will be reading more. Song of Wovoka is next on my list.

            Book Description

"Traditional Judaism injects sanctification into the ordinary habits of everyday life.Keeping kosher helps us pause and think about what we eat, and how we eat it, and elevates the act of eating."

What does it mean to keep kosher? Many may be familiar with the basics: no bacon, no shrimp, no cheeseburgers. But the Jewish dietary laws go deeper than that, and How to Keep Kosher explores the ins and outs. Why are some foods deemed kosher while others are not? Why can't you mix meat and dairy dishes? How do you turn a nonkosher kitchen into a kosher one? Do you really need multiple sets of everything -- dishes, pots, pans, and utensils? How do you keep track of what's what?

Whether you are thinking about adopting a kosher lifestyle or already have a kosher home and just want tounderstand what it is all about, Lisë Stern's How to Keep Kosher is essential reading. You will learn about the biblicaland historical origins of keeping kosher, the development of the kosher certification system, specific food preparation requirements for Shabbat, Passover, and otherholidays, and how to actually set up a kosher kitchen.

In straightforward language, drawing upon explanations from the Torah and Talmud, along with interviews with rabbis, academics, and laypeople who keep kosher, Lisë explores all aspects of Judaism's ancient dietary traditions as they are carried out in today's kitchen, with its range of modern appliances -- dishwashers, food processors, and microwave ovens. For the first time, one book explains both Conservative and Orthodox perspectives on kashrut, as well as opinions from other Jewish affiliations.

When Lisë was nine, her parents decided to make the change -- transform their home to a kosher one -- as a core part of their evolving commitment to Judaism. Because Lisë experienced the transition as a child and keeps a kosher home today, she is uniquely qualified to explain all aspects of this traditional practice.

Setting up a kosher kitchen lays the foundation for implementing the tradition; the proof is in the potato pudding. As Lisë notes, the Talmud says, "Room can always be found in one's stomach for sweet things," and the wealth of information is sweetened with more than forty recipes for Shabbat dinners and lunches as well as holiday and festival celebrations. Traditional recipes include Chicken Soup with My Mother's Ethereal Matzo Balls, Sliced Potato-Onion Kugel, and Hamantashen; new classics are Chilled Cucumber-Yogurt Soup, Rosemary Sweet Potato Kugel, Enchilada Lasagna, and Chocolate-Flecked Meringues.

Stern's How to Keep Kosher is an inclusive, user-friendly handbook filled with answers to the fundamental who, what, where, when, why, and how questions surrounding the Jewish dietary laws -- making these laws both accessible and appealing.

            Kashroots

I have been keeping kosher since I was about nine years old. That's when my family made the switch, and I remember the elaborate changes that I objected to initially, changes that evolved into personally meaningful practices. As I was a child at the time I began keeping kosher, I just accepted the various laws of kashrut at face value, without questioning the source and reason -- this is just what we do. No pork, no meat with milk, only “kosher” meat -- meat that has been slaughtered according to the laws of shechita. Chicken, which many general cookbooks categorize separately from meat, is as fleishig as beef under Jewish dietary laws. Fish, however, is considered pareve, neither meat or dairy. Fish could be served before meat, but it couldn't be served with meat. And eggs, which come from chickens, are also pareve, and can be served with meat.

Yes, it is confusing, but I just filed away the rules and followed them. Later, however, I wanted to understand these dietary laws; I thought, it may be easier to understand the various laws of kashrut if I had a better sense of where they came from.

I wanted to understand why the laws are what they are -- not the philosophical or spiritual reasons, but the practical reasons. The why I was seeking was not really the logic or justification of kashrut, but the historical roots. I was curious about the sources for the laws of kashrut. What were the origins of the basic laws of kashrut (not to mention the wealth of detail) that we observe today? What exactly does it say to do in the Torah, the Talmud, the Shulchan Aruch, and other writings of Jewish sages over the millennia and beyond, and how did that all evolve into the way kashrut is observed today, in the twenty-first century?

Regardless of the whys, I appreciate kashrut as a way of sanctifying meals, but understanding the sources helps give a sense of the bigger picture, of how kashrut has been a part of Judaism since the time of the Torah. The biblical verses that set down the basic laws of kashrut provide a fascinating glimpse into our own history as a people. To think that we have maintained some observance in how we eat for thousands of years -- it is a kesher, a tie, a connection between our ancestors and us as Jews living and eating and working in the twenty-first century.

            Lemon-Scented Roast Chicken

            Meat • • • Serves 4

My friend Elizabeth Sternberg trained as a professional chef before becoming the Combined Jewish Philanthropies' Director of Housing for People with Disabilities. A meal at her house is always a treat. ""Chicken is my favorite food,"" she told me and rattled off a list of chicken recipes she makes regularly. Her favorite is a simple roast chicken. ""I prefer a whole chicken; I think it cooks better,"" she says. ""It seems like there's more flavor when you roast chicken, it's the right consistency. And I like carving it.""

            Ingredients

One 4-pound whole chicken, rinsed and patted dry
            2 tablespoons olive oil
4 garlic cloves, peeled and finely minced
Zest and juice from 1 lemon; save lemon halves
            2 teaspoons dried rosemary
            ½ cup minced fresh parsley

            Instructions

Preheat the oven to 375°F. Remove any excess fat from the chicken and discard (or save for making schmaltz). Remove the neck and giblets from the cavity, if they're there. Put the squeezed lemon halves in the cavity of the chicken.

Combine the olive oil, garlic, lemon zest and lemon juice, rosemary, and parsley, and mix well. Lift the skin and cover the back and front of the chicken with the parsley mixture, slipping it between the skin and the meat.

A useful introduction to keeping kosher, and to the differences not only between Orthodox Jews and more liberal denominations, but even between stricter and more lenient Orthodox views- although as the author repeatedly points out, there is no substitute for consulting the rabbi of your choice on details.

This is an excellent work on the Kashrut or the rules of how to eat. The basic rules require that no forbidden meat, fowl or fish be consumed. Milk and meat may not be consumed together and no
non-Kosher meat may be consumed. Major Kosher organizations are
Star K, Kashrus Labs, The Orthodox Union and K of K Supervision.
Orthodox Jews eat only in Kosher restaurants or homes. The Talmud guards against forbidden fat (cheleu) or blood of mammals or birds.
Sample Kosher foods are pasta, salsa, jam, cakes, cereal,
cheese of France/Israel, Kiddush wines and fair Merlot. The

I am finding How to Keep Kosher a valuable tool to explain and de-mystify the how tos and whys of keeping kosher. This book is a must read for a Jew by choice, or a Jew wanting to live a more kosher life.
Lise Stern explains the process of kashering a kitchen, something which may seem very over whelming. I appreciate that she acknowledges how work intensive the kashering process can be, but as she explains the reasons for keeping kosher, it becomes more achieveable and worthwhile.

"How to Keep Kosher" isn't just about the food, thank goodness. For many culturally assimilated Jews, kashruth (Jewish dietary laws) is an endlessly nitpicky religious construct. For the observant, it's a richly satisfying, comprehensive philosophy that gives structure and meaning to everyday life and special occasions. And for almost everybody else, kosher or not, it's an ongoing source of, shall we say, spirited discussion.

You want "faith-based"? Here it is, fresh from Leviticus. Stern combines Biblical knowledge, extensive interviews with religious authorities, and wide-ranging research in chapters that are well-organized for easy ad hoc reference. Her writing style is conversational: clear, precise, even humorous. I find myself dipping into the book at random and getting caught up in intriguing details. That resinous glaze used for candy coatings is made from a Southeast Asian insect: not kosher.

What makes the book such an engaging read is Stern's tone:
warm and authoritative, inclusive of Conservative and Orthodox perspectives, and respectful of personal choices. Oh, and there are recipes, and lists of resources for further investigation. Yes, it's an ideal Chanukah present, but "Keeping Kosher" will
also fit comfortably on the bookshelves of any cook, whether committed to keeping kosher or merely curious.
