Not so intertained.......2007-08-27
I did not read the first book, but I picked this one up because it looked good. I just did not get into it like I normally do with books of this genre. The main character just seemed whiney to me. I could see no real reason that she wouldn't want to accept her power. Maybe it is explained in the first book. The shifting through time was interesting as well as the Dracula references. Over all I counsider this book ok and I will not read the others in the series.
Indecisiveness with Mystic Backgrounds.......2007-08-18
In book one, Cassie was smart, savvy, and running for her life. In book two she is still running for her life, but she doesn't know what's going on. On the whole, I believe a protagonist with a clue is more fun than one without one. The supporting cast from 'Touch the Dark' is still here, but with switched around loyalties that aren't always well explained. I liked the first volume better, but the second isn't that much worse. 'Claimed By Shadow' gave me the sense the author was trying too hard with her plot, as things become very tangled at the expense of characterization. This could have been wonderful if motivations were shown instead of told in dialogue.
In short, this novel was fast and suspenseful without being great. A nice quick read if you go for vampires and magic. It felt much more like paranormal romance than fantasy.
Wonderful Sequel!.......2007-08-15
I loved the first book (Touch the Dark) and anxiously awaited the sequel. I was thrilled to find it was even better! Smart, sexy, funny, intense, like nothing else in the genre. Can't recommend it highly enough for fantasy, mystery or thriller fans.
Trying too hard.......2007-07-31
I'm a huge paranormal romance fan - it's almost the only thing I read these days - so I was excited to think I had found another author to add to my list. Unfortunately, Ms. Chance doesn't make the cut.
This is the first book of hers that I have attempted to read, and I have to say it doesn't motivate me to try again. Frankly, I haven't even finished it. She lost me in the first chapter. I have continued to slog about halfway through the book, but the pacing of the book is frenzied and the characters, while fairly well developed, seem out of control of their own lives. Too much back story is needed from the previous book (which I wasn't aware existed when I purchased this one) to really understand this one.
The feeling I get from this book is that the author is trying too hard. She seems to be attempting to achieve a Harry Dresden style, but is just flat out trying too hard. Too much in too short of a time. She's rushing and I'm not enjoying the ride.
Basically, I've lost any interest in these characters and don't really care what happens. I expect I will eventually finish this book when I don't have another one and am desperate for something to read. I can only hope it suddenly improves.
Fun, exciting read.......2007-07-30
I loved this book! I've read many fantasy/vampire tales, but none that were as original and just plain fun as this series. I really enjoyed Touch the Dark, which turned out to be unexpectedly substantial (I had initially thought it would be a fairly basic vampire romance book). And this one was equally surprising. Fun, funky, yet strangely meaty, for lack of a better word. There's a solid plot in there amidst all the madness! And I was very surprised by the final denoument. I can't wait for the sequel.

This book is truly a manifesto for us blacks who grew up post-Jim Crow but still had to deal with the remnants of it afterwards, and who had to fight the double battle of not fittting in with "ghettocentric" mindsets in Black America. For those of us who've had this experience, it's all there. The rejection and humiliation from both sides (white racists and black dogmatists), feeling alone and unaccepted, and the eventual realization that you are who you are and to live life accordingly. Although few of us go to the extremes that Brain Copeland did in his despair over his experiences, it's still quite inspiring. His "you are nornal" soliloquy at the end speaks so eloquently to this situation that I have given this to students of mine who experience the same things and they have cried tears of joy from knowning that someone understands and has articulated their experiences.
You are not alone. You are normal. Thank you Brian.
A Lesson In Humanity.......2007-03-07
No matter your race or upbringing, this book will touch your heart. It presents a good lesson in humanity. As a caucasian, you can never understand the prejudice that African-Americans have had to endure. Copeland's experience was magnified living in such a white community. Although that community has changed over the years, many communities in America have not. Perhaps this book will make a difference in how people treat one another. It may not make a big impact, but as individuals, all we can ever do is try to change our little corner of the world.
Besides being thought-provoking, this book is well written and humorous as well as poignant. Definitely put this book on your must-read list!!
Not a Geniune Black Man: Or, How I Claimed My Piece of Ground in the Lily-White Suburbs.......2007-02-09
I enjoyed this book tremendously. I found Mr. Copeland's incorporation of humor into this serious theme to help me enjoy the book. I felt his and his family's evey pain. Being black in America has not been the easiest life to live and I can relate to some of the delemas that he endured. In my younger days, I, too, was acused of Not being a Genine Black Woman, based mostly on my speech and the music I enjoyed, Broadway Shows and musical movies. As I got older and more black people got to Broadway, it was easier to be accepted. My speech has also been impaired due to a recent stroke. Mr. Copland's experiences made me laugh and cry. I am sorry his mother is not around to see how he has turned out. I brought 2 copies of the book and gave one as a gift. My friend really enjoyed the book also. The book made me want to see him in person on stage.
An eye-opener.......2007-01-17
it was incredible to me the racism experienced by the author, given the time period and the location. i am from california myself, and had always thought that we were fairly "progressive", so was saddened by the author's experiences. it was definitely a good read - i have bought it as gifts for others as well!
Brian Copeland tells it like it was.......2007-01-10
Brian Copeland's Not a Genuine Black Man accurately and poignantly describes growing up in one of America's gilded white suburbs. The book boils with honesty and passion; it shows both the darkest and brightest sides of human nature as well as how the love of a family can inspire a child's belief in himself and determination to succeed. While Brian's humorous story telling might bring a chuckle, his treatment of the subject matter only makes the reality of the blatant and cruel racism he and many others like him endured more painful and chilling. The book evoked many memories for me as well as strong emotional responses from laughter and tears, to pure outrage and anger. I couldn't put the book down and read it in a day. My parents were part of the "white flight" from Oakland in the early 60's and moved to San Leandro when I was 18 years old. At that time there were also several people living in San Leandro who were committed to fair housing and social justice and equality, and Mr. Copeland gives ample credit to these folks who worked so hard to help San Leandro evolve into the rich, ethnically diverse and more socially conscious community it has and continues to become. This book is must reading for all Americans because of the pervasive racism that is our history and also our responsibility to change.

This is an excellent review of Portland's early pioneering families. It contains short biographical summaries of some of Portland's most interesting characters along with some information on the legacy they left for future generations. I found some errors in the spelling of names of my own ancestors, but in general the information is accurate and informative.

Excellent book. She definitely is a spiritual superstar. I first heard her interview on 3ABN and was so impressed that I wanted to read her books. She emailed me personally to which I am very indebted and admire
her courage and perseverance. All of her footnotes at the end of each chapter I typed and printed out and when I have despondent days and want to feel sorry for myself I read her advice and get uplifted by her comments. I hope to meet her someday and shake her hand. She lives her Christianity and I am appreciative of her book.

Oh my goodness!! Every parent should have this book. I am seeing the principles in this book work with our son. And as I share the principles with other parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc. They are seeing their relationships with the children in their life change. I only wish that my parents would have had this book, while I was growing up. It would have answered so many of my behavior issues as a child. Thank God for this book.
