A hero is ill, and despite all their power, the rest of the Marvel universe can do nothing to stop Mar-Vell from dying from cancer.

They all come to pay their respect to the brave warrior, including his archenmey, Thanos. This is really well done. So well done, in fact, that this is one character that has stayed dead.

4 out of 5 stars Jim Starlin, genio cosmico e drammatico.......2007-07-16

5 out of 5 stars The Life and Death of Captain Marvel.......2007-02-18

I REMEMBER JUST LIKE IT WAS YESTERDAY WHEN I BOUGHT "THE DEATH OF CAPTAIN MARVEL" IN THE SUMMER OF 1984. THIS BOOK HAD BEEN OUT FOR 3 YEARS AND IT WAS IN ITS SIXTH PRINTING. THIS ALONE IS A TESTAMENT TO HOW GROUNDBREAKING AND, DARE I SAY IT, IMPORTANT THIS WAS TO COMICS STORYTELLING AND TO THE INDUSTRY ITSELF. THIS BOOK WAS IMPORTANT TO ME BECAUSE THIS WAS THE FIRST COMIC BOOK STORY THAT I ACTUALLY READ FROM COVER TO COVER AND WHEN I BOUGHT THIS I WAS A RISING SENIOR IN HIGH SCHOOL AND HAD NO IDEA WHAT I WAS GOING TO DO AFTER GRADUATION BUT THIS BOOK INSPIRED ME TO WRITE COMICS AFTER I WAS TOLD BY A RELATIVE WHEN I WANTED TO PURSUE A CAREER AS A COMIC BOOK ARTIST, THAT NO ONE WOULD APPRECIATE MY ART UNTIL I WAS DEAD(I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER BUT I WAS 17 AT THE TIME).I HAD READ A REVIEW STATING HOW DEPRESSING OR MORBID THE DEATH OF CAPTAIN MARVEL STORY WAS. IT WAS THAT WAY FOR A REASON. THIS WAS STARLIN'S MOST PERSONAL WORK BECAUSE HE BASED THIS STORY ON HIS FATHER'S STRUGGLE AND EVENTUAL DEATH AS A RESULT OF CANCER.

WHEN YOU READ THIS STORY,YOU CAN FEEL MAR-VELL'S PAIN AS HE HAS TO COME TO GRIPS WITH THE FACT THAT HE IS GOING TO DIE AND THE WORLD IS GOING TO GO ON WITHOUT HIM. THERE IS ONE POINT IN THE STORY WHERE HE IS MAKING SOME TAPES ABOUT HIS LIFE AND DURING THE RECORDING HE IS STRICKEN WITH A PAIN THAT USUALLY A CANCER PATIENT ENDURES AND AFTER THE PAIN SUBSIDES, MAR-VELL, WITH ONE SWING, DESTROYS THE MACHINE HE IS USING TO MAKE THESE RECORDINGS AND YELLS OUT "DAMN". IN THE FOLLOWING PANELS YOU SEE AND FEEL HIS FRUSTRATIONS WITH THE DISEASE AND BEING TERMINALLY ILL AS HE SAYS "ALIEN INVADERS,SUPER-VILLIANS,MONSTERS,MUTANTS, THEY HAVE ALL TRIED, BUT NONE OF THEM COULD KILL ME. I FOUGHT THEM ALL AND I WON! I SURVIVED. WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT, IN THE END... THAT IT WOULD BE MY OWN BODY THAT WOULD TURN ON ME AND DO ME IN." HE THEN LAMENTS AFTER REGAINING HIS COMPOSURE. " BUT WHAT ARE YOU CARRYING ON SO ABOUT, MAR-VELL? IT'S NOT AS YOU'VE BEEN SINGLED OUT FOR THIS. EVERYONE HAS TO DIE SOMEDAY. OR DID YOU THINK YOU WERE UNIQUE? YES, I GUESS THAT'S WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT. I JUST NEVER FIGURED IT THAT IT WOULD HAPPEN TO ME. DEEP DOWN INSIDE OF ME I FELT THAT THOSE SPECIAL THINGS THAT MAKE ME WHO I AM WOULD JUST LET ME LIVE FOREVER. IT'S HARD TO ACCEPT THAT THE WORLD IS GOING TO GO ON WITHOUT ME. DAMN."

THERE IS ANOTHER PART OF THE STORY WHERE SPIDER-MAN IS SO OVERCOME WITH EVERYTHING THAT IS GOING ON WHEN VARIOUS MEMBERS OF THE MARVEL UNIVERSE GO TO THE PLANET TITAN TO VISIT THE STRICKEN HERO THAT HE HAS TO LEAVE MAR-VELL'S ROOM WHEN HE IS FOLLOWED BY THE BEAST WHO PUTS LIFE IN A VERY UNIQUE PRESPECTIVE WHEN HE TELLS SPIDEY " IN CASE YOU HAVEN'T NOTICED, BENEATH THESE FANCY COSTUMES AND FLASHY POWERS HIDE MORTAL MEN AND WOMEN. NONE OF US HAVE MUCH OF A SAY ON HOW WERE GOING TO END THIS LIFE."

THE PRECEEDING STORIES IN THIS COLLECTION ARE FROM THE MINI SERIES "THE LIFE OF CAPTAIN MARVEL" AND FEATURES THE PIVOTAL STORY WHICH COULD BE CONSIDERED THE PROLOGUE TO "THE DEATH OF CAPTAIN MARVEL" WHICH IS MAR-VELL'S BATTLE WITH THE VILLIAN NITRO THAT LEADS TO THE EXPOSURE TO THE NERVE GAS WHICH IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CANCER THAT WILL TAKE HIS LIFE.

THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ. I SAY THAT NOW BECAUSE IF THOSE READING THIS DO NOT KNOW, CAPTAIN MARVEL HAS BEEN BROUGHT BACK AS PART OF MARVEL COMICS MINI-SERIES, "CIVIL WAR". HE MAKES HIS RETURN IN THE ONE-SHOT CALLED "CIVIL WAR: THE RETURN" WHERE IT EXPLAINS HOW HE WAS BROUGHT FROM THE PAST INTO THE PRESENT, SOME 25-26 YEARS AFTER HIS DEATH. AND TO MAKE THINGS MORE COMPLICATED, HE KNOWS HE IS GOING TO DIE AND REALIZES THAT HE IS LIVING ON BORROWED TIME. BUT BEING THE TRUE HERO AND WARRIOR THAT HE IS, MARV-VELL PRESSES ON.

I WOULD SUGGEST THIS BOOK TO ANYONE WHO HAS DEALT WITH A LOVED ONE WHO IS TERMINALLY ILL, SOMEONE WHO IS LOOKING FOR A REASON TO APPRECIATE THEIR OWN LIVES AND THE TIME YOU HAVE OR SOMEONE LOOKING FOR A GREAT COMIC BOOK STORY. FOR THERE HAS NOT BEEN ANOTHER STORY SINCE THAT CAN MEASURE UP TO BEING, IN MY OPINION, THE MOST REALISTIC COMIC STORY EVER WRITTEN.

5 out of 5 stars The best cosmic comic story ever! .......2007-02-04

I grew up reading this adventure back in the '70's. Mar-Vell was always one of my favorite characters, and his death in the early '80's was a sad moment for fans of the hero. But Jim Starlin proved himself here in these pages as being one of the greatest comic creators ever. His re-creation of Mar-Vell from soldier and warrior to the Protector of the Universe Entire was nothing short of incredible! The entire Thanos battle has never been surpassed by anyone since. It is perhaps the greatest comics story ever written and drawn. Let alone that Starlins artwork is by far and away quite possibly the best that has ever graced the four color medium. What passes for most comic artwork today is a joke compared to the fine lines and sweeping curves of Starlin at his best. This heros adventures have become classics, and even the many that followed Starlins exit from the magazine would be great to see in this format. This is comic storytelling at its best. Highest recomendation possible!

5 out of 5 stars Son of the Kree Empire- Champion of the Universe.......2005-04-05

Unlike Superman, there was no miraculous return from the grave for Captain Marvel. Nor did Marvel die a heroic death in battle while saving the universe. But then he didn't need to, for he had already fought that great battle- against Thanos, the Titan who had become God Himself, and who sought to deliver the totality of Creation unto Death Herself....

No, Captain Marvel had already fought his great battles and was enjoying the hard-won fruits of semi-retirement. He had finally found the peace, and the love, that had eluded him for so long. And then he was diagnosed with what is known on Titan as Inner Decay, and among the Kree as Blackend- and on Earth as... Cancer.

Yet, the Captain faced this last foe with courage and dignity that put the rest of the Marvel Universe to shame. Hero after hero, from Captain America to Thor, came to wonder at the dignity and nobility with which the Captain faced a foe that could not be defeated. No, Marvel wasn't tired of living- he made that abundantly clear- but when he knew his time was done he accepted it. Not only that, he made sure that the comrades and loved ones around him accepted- and learned- from his example.

Of course, in a way, Marvel was the best prepared of any of the heroes for this final journey. After all, the bombastic Captain Mar-vell, super-soldier of the mighty Kree Empire had died once before- to be reborn as Captain Marvel, the cosmically conscious warrior champion of the entire universe. This was because Mar-vell had faced death once before with pride and power and ego- and he had failed.... After that, he was taken to a place beyond space and time by the being named Eon. Under the direction of this being, created by Kronos, the Cosmic Balance, some eight billion years before, Mar-vell the soldier died, or at least his colossal pride and ego did. After facing his inner demons, he was reborn as the champion of all-things. This was possible since he was now cosmically aware and he knew that he was truly part of all-things. The Universe had crystallized out an antidote for ultimate evil in its time of need- a cosmic champion.

You don't really have to he familiar with the saga of Mar-vell to enjoy this story. It is all spelled out right here. While I know of a number of graphic stories as good as this one, I really don't know of any that are BETTER than this one.

5 out of 5 stars Rare Gem of A Graphic Novel.......2005-10-25

While there are many superb graphic novels out there, 'The Death of Captain Marvel' belongs in the minority category of graphic novels that are timeless classics. I have yet to read another TPB that stands up to this one.

Captain Marvel faces an enemy he can't defeat: cancer. And that's exactly what gives this story its veracity: its closeness to humanity. Cancer is a horrible monster that we all know about, and sadly and grimly, undefeatable (or at least for the forseeable future). A superhero who faces such a monster is truly a touch of genius.

Like one of the reviewers said before, you don't need to know about the entire continuum of Captain Marvel's "story-verse" because it's all explained in the story. A stroke of genius.

A humane farewell to one of the finest character in the Marvel Universe. Captain Mar-Vell is depicted as a person who has to deal with cancer. Does he just give-up everything he stands for, or continue protecting the innocent and unjust? The answer comes in the form of Thanos... How will this end?

Jim Starlin provide a staggering story of facing an enemy that cannot be defeated. The guest appeareace of The Avengers and some of the Marvel Universe characters should attract most of the superheroes readers, but this time Starlin's depicted them in a more human perspectives. Try it out! You'll love it!

5 out of 5 stars Marvel's first ever graphic novel.......2001-09-26

There's a tendency to dismiss the comic book industry as being hopelessly juvenile with an infantile addiction to graphic violence and adolescent sexual imagery. Unfortunately, in some cases, this is a correct assessment. But then there are the other, too often ignored comics that transcend such self-imposed limitations. The Death of Captain Marvel is one such example.

Originally published in 1982, this was the first of Marvel's graphic novels and it has been said, quite correctly, that it revolutionized an industry that had started to grow fatally stagnant. Just as the title says, Jim Starlin's wonderfully written and illustrated novel details the last days of Marvel mainstay Capt. Marr-Vell (an alien better known as Capt. Marvel in one of those delightful comic book coincidences). After years of battling various cosmic foes of all size and evil, Marvel finds himself felled by that most human and realistic of diseases. He had cancer and a great deal of this graphic novel examines how his super powered friends react to the death of one of their own from a disease that could have afflicted any of them. Though Starlin allows for a bit of the expected super heroic melodrama, overall the Death of Captain Marvel is distinguished by a quiet, contemplative mood as Marvel deals with his impending death. In the end, its rather touching and truly thought provoking.

The term graphic novel is one that gets mocked. It sometimes seems to reek of fanboy pretension. The Death of Captain Marvel reminds us of what a graphic novel was originally supposed to be. A comic book, yes, but a comic book for adults -- a comic book that eschewed the melodrama and absurdities of a monthly title and instead used the format to say something truly special. The Death of Captain Marvel more than lives up to that promise.

5 out of 5 stars The Twelve Gifts for Healing.......2006-07-19

I highly recommend this book! Any age or issue from physical healing to everyday problems. The book reads in a matter of a few minutes. Its message will resonate with you all day. It reunited me with my heart, and a willingness to be my authetic self. The message is simple, yet POWERFUL. It re-acquainted me with what I've always known though forgot to remember. And, gives me permission (and a responsibility) to "go within" on a regular basis. For if "We don't go within, we go without". (I don't know who to credit for that saying).
Charlene, you are an angel on earth. May you receive the blessings you give to others.

5 out of 5 stars Comfort and Courage.......2004-11-26

This is an exceptionally beautiful and touching book. My daughter is being treated for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and The Twelve Gifts for Healing brought comfort and courage to her, my cancer patient friends and to me.

                5 out of 5 stars Truly Inspiring.......2004-11-23

While reading this book I actually was talking to myself , saying things about how nice but simple the whole presentation was, but then.....suddenly the complex and powerful, deep meaning had an overwhelming effect on me. I have Lymphoma and had just finished not so fun chemotherapy. My background as a college football player gave me the strength and courage to put up a strong fight and deal with the many side affects chemo creates. I knew I needed to have a very positive outlook to whip this thing and everyone felt I had it under control. Never missed a day of work, came in, in the afternoons, after treatments in the mornings. But the Twelve Gifts for Healing made me realize in order to heal I had to believe not just act. It made me realize I needed to release the bitterness and anger that I still harbored internally. I have a qoute that came to mind:
"Bitterness consumes the capsule that contains it" Twelve Gifts allowed me to release these feelings and actually forgive myself for becoming sick. Yes I felt giulty, must have deserved it somehow, I thought. This is truly a great book that delivers a powerful message and I hope many others are fortunate enought o experience it's healing inspiration.
