4 out of 5 stars Cantor's Transfinite Numbers Are Ready for High Schools.......2006-09-23

This book tells me that Georg Cantor's work in mathematics is ready to be taught in high schools. Earlier books on Cantor are too mathematical, hide truths about life, and hide God from the general public. The author brings life into Cantor. The problem is that mathematicians have removed life out of Cantor's work by rejecting God and God's determinate infinity.

The author's discussion of mathematics on p.19 should be given lots of attention. There, he has words of Imre Lakatos and Morris Kline on the danger of logic. My recent book on 'The First Scientific Proof of God' shows that some opposing concepts can coexist, but only if God exists. By taking Cantor's work into the high schools, mathematicians might learn that their work can be unified with life and that God really exists.

1 out of 5 stars Don't trust this book.......2006-03-15

The section on transfinite numbers is full of errors. For starters, he says

"an aleph0 set ... has precisely 2^aleph0 conceivable subsets ... It is the first stepping stone beyond infinity, the first transfinite number, which Cantor named aleph1 ... A set with aleph1 elements in turn, has precisely 2^aleph1 conceivable subsets. This is the second stepping stone, the second transfinite number aleph2, and so forth."

First off, aleph0 is the first transfinite number. Secondly, he's assuming GCH without telling you so. Finally, Cantor did not "name" 2^aleph0 "aleph1", he conjectured that this *equation* was true, this is precisely CH.

"To this day we still don't know exactly how many irrationals there are, although it has been established that the total number cannot be more than aleph1."

We don't know the aleph number of the irrationals, but that's because we don't know the aleph number of the reals. And it's completely wrong to say it "cannot be more than aleph1". It can be any aleph(x) where x > 0 has uncountable cofinality. This is about as far from "cannot be more than aleph1" as you can get!!

"Cantor himself guessed that the total number of irrationals is exactly aleph1, mainly since aleph1 is the next largest infinity after aleph0 defined by set theory. His guess came to be known as the Continuum Hypothesis. But there is still the uneliminated possibility that the number of irrationals actually lies between aleph0 and aleph1."

Laughable. There are NO cardinals between aleph0 and aleph1, by definition. Duh.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Introductory Exposition of Sophisticated Mathematics.......2004-04-30

A previous reviewer claims this book is "full of errors," but gives no examples of them. While I can't guarantee that this book is error free, any such errors are likely to involve technicalities which can be overlooked given the introductory and relatively qualitative nature of this book. On the important points, the book indeed appears to be accurate and clear. Moreover, this book is highly enjoyable, and probably accessible for everyone ranging from bright high school students on up. As such, the book is as an excellent prelude before plunging into a more rigorous study of the subject and, indeed, many readers will probably be motivated to do just that!

1 out of 5 stars Full of errors.......2001-12-04

I give this book the lowest possible rating because it is
absolutely full of errors. I will not dignify the book by
giving specific examples. (But if you really care, you can
look up the review in the American Mathematical Monthly.)

Here is the real problem: if you are not already familiar
with the mathematics he is discussing, then you might not
even realize that you are reading nonsense! If this doesn't
bother you, then go right ahead and read this book. But if
you care about the accuracy of what you are reading, then
look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly readable, and just plain fun!.......1999-03-12

As soon as I began reading this book, I realized it had been written specifically for me. Math and I never got along. We could never agree on anything, and the truth was, Math was always much smarter. But BRIDGES TO INFINITY demystified Math. Dr. Guillen gently and patiently explains the stuff that goes on in Math's head. Finally, after reading this book, Math and I came to an understanding. Math is still smarter, but now we get along.

3 out of 5 stars this book was disappointing.......1999-07-05

If you're looking for something practical, this book is not for you. Cathie spends most of his time relating different "harmonics" to each other without ever taking the time to explain the significance of the numbers or of the way he manipulates them. The book was interesting, no doubts there. But if you want information you can use in experiments of your own, then search elsewhere. This one is pure theory.

5 out of 5 stars Toward A Unified Theory Of The Cosmos.......2006-03-13

Captain Bruce Cathie shows how HARMONICS - wave forms of light - and their interaction and resonance, form the basis or "matrix" of the universe. Advanced applications for space travel, "free" energy production and much more could be developed. An important book, filled with mathematical data and derivations to back up his case. He shows examples of how the ancients used this knowledge to design the Great Pyramid, the world grid system, and even the basis for the English system of measurement. He is convinced a secret group is utilizing this knowledge and purposefully keeping the world ignorant and backward. Based upon the impact this kind of advancement would have on the "profitable" fossil fuel monopoly, it's hard to argue with him. Carefully written for both the scientist and the layman, The Bridge To Infinity is a powerful and important book and ahead of its time. To those with a scientific background, it's a "must-read". To those without such a background, I say READ IT ANYWAY.

5 out of 5 stars More of Cathie's Energy Grid.......2000-04-29

All of Cathie's books are important, but this one gives important reinforcement to his early work, THE ENERGY GRID. He gives new information on the energy grid, plus analyses the harmonics of several free energy devices, and Tibetan levitation, Irish round towers and more. I highly recommend all his books.

                5 out of 5 stars A Serious Book for Serious Athletes-No Kidding.......2007-04-29

This is the first book a serious athlete should read on endurance and multisport training. It provides a great foundation for everything you will need to know to develop your own effective training program. The writing team of Sleamaker and Browning work well together. Sleamaker gives you the theory and the facts, and Browning puts them into practice.

                4 out of 5 stars Okay read.......2007-04-21

It has a lot of good ideas on how to create a training schedule. This isn't the main book I use but I do revert to some of the ideas on occasion.

4 out of 5 stars Very helpful .......2005-11-18

I use this book in order to build my training schedule and I enjoy any minute. The book explains the different components of the periodic training method and presents a practical way to develope a yearly log for different types of endurance events (road races up to the marathon distance, triathlons and duathlons up to ironman/ powerman distances, cross-country race, cross-country skiing). I use this books for over a year now, and I find it very helpul.

The fifth star is missing because I find that the books is lacking a more comprehansive view for the periodization within the training week.

                4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2003-06-25

This is a good book for people who have never done a sport at a high level, because it will show you how to do a good training and give you ideas for exercises, it is also for people who plan to do some sport for a special event (for example, training for a 1 week or more mountain hiking)

I would not really recommend this book to people who already do high level taining and who allready are in a training program, because they probably allready know most of the exercises and ideas of this book (or at least something equivalent)

4 out of 5 stars Excellent primer for a successful training program.......2003-06-13

I bought this book on the recommendations of Amazon customers and I must admit that I wasn't disapointed. Sometimes you don't know what you're going to get when everyone gives a book 5 stars. Sometimes it's hard to get an unbiased review.
I was pleased with the book and what others have said is true. I recommend this book to endurance athletes looking for reasons and explanations on why to train a certain way and what it will do for your body in the long run.
However, I am a competetive rower and there were few topics that took rowing into account. Most of the training is geared towards running/cycling/triathetes and not specific to rowing as much as I was hoping. Also, there is way too little emphasis on resistance training. Most of the book is about setting up a mathmatical training plan and says to devote time sparingly to strength training. I'm not an expert on other sports, but I do know that power through strength training is vital for a strong pull on those oars. I suggest devoting more time in the SERIOUS formula to weight training in the gym than the book suggests, especially in the early training weeks.

As for the rest of the book, it's great, but it takes a *LOT* of paperwork. Fortunately my wife is handy with MS Excel and plotted all the charts for me with forulas that makes it all easy. However, without her I know that I would be daunted and discouraged at the task of making all the charts and calculations by hand. In a future updated edition (I hope that they make one) the book should come with a CDROM loaded with all the charts and formulas, or at least a web site link for downloading them. In the 21st century it's good practice to have online content and I hope to see it with this great text book.

A big question for me when buying my first book on training for racing, was "Who provides the most reliable and important information?" I have seen Dr. Burke quoted in a variety of sources including Bicycling magazine, Velo magazine, and Chris Carmichael's web site. So I had the impression he is respected in the sport. Further, when reading his writings in other sources, he has gone into the underlying physiological processes that contribute to one's performance on a bike. As such, I decided to purchase his book based on his apparent credibility and the depth of information he provides. Strengths of his book include its excellent coverage of what goes into training for competitive cycling. From beginning "base training" to sprint training, periodization, and planning one's training for the entire year. He also speaks at length on nutrition, equipment/rider aerodynamics, body positioning on the bike, and adjunct training methods. Again, there is an emphasis on underlying physiological processes including some discussion of relevant research. I would say the book's weaknesses lie with it's failure to address racing tactics. Certainly, you learn about what is happening with the body at race pace, but this book will not tell you about positioning for a sprint or pacing one's self for a time trial.
In short, buy this book if you are serious about racing and want to enhance your knowledge of what goes into training for competition. Don't buy this book if you want to learn about tactics.

Very detailed, I found "serious cycling" easy and enjoyable to read. Ideal for the self - coached athlete, it helps personalize your cycling program depending on your present abilities. While reading you find that there is much more to training and becoming a better rider then you first thought, but it puts the "why" into training in addition to the "how" giving a better understanding and appreciation with what changes your body must undergo to be a better cyclist.

Periodization, training modes, keeping diaries and more... The nutrition section I found to be a little "old school" but, nevertheless, interesting and backed by studies. This information is aimed at the "serious cyclist" and may be too much for someone not willing to put forth the 15+ hours a week.

4 out of 5 stars detailed, very serious and technical tome.......1997-12-25

Burke, a well known name among cyclists, gives very detailed and sometimes complicated advice about how to train, how to create a training schedule for various goals, how and why to make a training diary, etc. Readers should be aware that his advice is aimed at the very serious cyclist, and his training schedules range from those for serious collegiate cyclists (~15hrs/week) to professionals (~25+ hrs/week). His advice is sound, but it may be more than most people really need. His peak mileage (feb) is 2000miles--that's 500 miles per week!

5 out of 5 stars Love the book!!.......2006-05-05

I thoroughly enjoy this book! I find it very useful and very informative. I love the fact that this book is direct and to the point. I can just find the outline/topic of what I need to know, and the explanation is very helpful and to the point. I often review the mtb techniques and skills from this book before a race.
I highly recommend Ann Trombley's Serious Mountain Biking!

                  Serious Mountain Biking
                  By Ann Trombley

                  Reviewed by Arnie Baker

                  Overview: * Look Elsewhere

I looked forward to reading Serious Mountain Biking. Ann Trombley's professional career overlapped that of Jimena Florit, a rider I coached for a decade. It was fun to read about Ann's exploits, and to read about her races and other competitors I knew through traveling to some of those same races myself and through Jimena's reports.

Ann's book covers three areas for the aspiring racer: Equipment, skills, and training. Her messages generally follow traditional wisdom. She quotes others and offers her own advice.
The writing style is casual, which will appeal to many readers. To me, however, it was too breezy and inexact. Her style and the book's editors allow descriptions that too often make sense only if you already know what Ann is trying to say.

                  Equipment
Ann repeats traditional fit concepts from road biking. Although she addresses some mountain bike fit issues, she misses the opportunity to write about mountain bike specific fit issues-such as brake-lever placement.

                  Skills
The tips and information are general, rudimentary, inexact, and sometimes wrong. This section will help many riders with basics, but it is mostly pabulum. Brian Lopes' Mastering Mountain Biking Skills is much better.

                  Training
Ann knows the jargon, many of the concepts and principles, and gives examples of helpful workouts. Unfortunately, these are jumbled up, she forgets her audience, and she sometimes appears to be in over her head.

                  Index
Indexing seems to be a lost art, certainly in many of the Human Kinetics books I have reviewed. The index does not contain 8 of the 9 entries that I thought of checking. For example, although discussed as major topics in the book the following are not directly indexed: descending, intervals, heart rate, power, periodization, macrocycle, perceived exertion, and VO2 max. Climbing was the only subject indexed.

                  Summary
Ann has a contribution to make. She has good information to communicate. Unfortunately, she does not do so effectively. An editor with mountain-biking knowledge might have helped.

                  Examples
The following are examples illustrating my criticisms, including poor writing, editing, or bad information:

                  Equipment
                  Page 5.
                  "Selecting Your Style"
This is a poor heading. The section that follows is about selecting your bike to match your riding style. It is not about deciding whether to be a downhiller or climber.

                  Page 14.
"Frame Size. All frame builders are not alike."
I think what Ann means is: Frame builders determine frame size differently. That is what she should write. Her sentence might be referring to building materials, frame geometry, or frame rigidity.

                  Page 18.
Under crank arm length. "Larger crank arms enable you to push bigger gears at lower RPMs and smaller crank arms enable you to push smaller gears at higher RPMs."
Ann is not writing about beefier cranks, she is writing about longer cranks. The author should have written, and the editor should have corrected to, longer and shorter, rather than larger and smaller.

                  Page 18.
"You can determine crank arm length by your height using table 1.2."
Editing issue. Substandard English sentence construction. You determine crank arm length by measuring it, or looking at the dimensions engraved into the cranks. Editor should have corrected to: You can determine a suggested crank arm length from your height by using table 1.2.

                  Page 19.
"Saddle Position. ...put your cranks in a horizontal position in relation to the ground and drop the plum line or straight edge from your kneecap straight down. It should fall directly in front of the pedal spindle (see figure 1.5)."
What does directly mean? In the referenced figure, the plumb line from the knee falls a couple of inches ahead of the pedal spindle. Bad choice of picture, unless chosen to illustrate a too-far forward saddle position.

                  Page 22.
                  "Getting Your Gear"
Poor heading choice. This heading comes directly after sections on which type of bike to buy and bike position. I thought "Getting Your Gear" might be about where to buy your bike. Alternatively, perhaps about what gears to purchase-for example, triple chain ring selection. What followed was a brief section on shoes, shorts, and helmets. Editor should have corrected to a better heading choice, for example: Accessories.

                  Skills
                  Page 45.
"Countersteering and Braking. Countersteering on a bicycle is similar to the position of the wheels as seen in racecar driving. Basically, the front wheel is turned away from the direction of the turn..."
Ann misses the basic concept. It is about leaning the bike more than the body. Race cars do not lean and countersteer. Maybe Ann meant racing motorcycles. Even if so, in countersteering a motorcycle the application of power makes it different from countersteering a bicycle. The whole paragraph that follows is confusing and hinders more than helps.

                  Page 60.
"Braking Guidelines. The best time to brake is never."
I agree that many mountain bikers are too tentative and "overbrake." However, those reading this section are probably already frightened about mountain bike descents, want to become more skillful in mastering braking control in turns, or otherwise want to improve their braking. Ann's first sentence immediately sets the wrong tone, and risks losing her reader.

                  Page 62.
"As a general rule, keep your eyes scanning between 5 and 10 feet down the trail at all times."
No. Not nearly far enough. Perhaps 15 feet ahead, 5 feet up.

                  Training
                  Page 129
"After you have determined what races you will do, highlight the ones most important to you, such as qualifiers for the World Championships."
This first paragraph has me wondering if this book is written for an audience of less than 20 racers.

                  Page 143
"A power meter measures how much energy (in watts) is transferred onto the pedals every second."
No. Energy is in kilojoules or calories. Energy divided by time is power, measured in watts.

                  Page 143
"Measuring power is currently the most efficient way of measuring your intensity while on a bike."
What does the word efficient mean here? Efficiency in the physics, engineering, and sports science sense has to do with power produced versus power consumed. For example, athletes are 22% efficient, losing about 78% of their calories burned as heat.
A careful editor might have substituted effective.

                  Page 143
"The amount of power a cyclist is generating remains constant with a change in the environment whether it be the cyclist's core temperature or external considerations."
Sorry. No. Overheated, a cyclist will drop their power output.

                  Page 144.
"Once you get your HRmax, you can calculate your VO2 max."
No. You can impute VO2 max from ramped power (My formula: watts/kg x 12 + 3.3). You cannot do it from heart rate max. Knowing heart rate max is 200, you have no idea about VO2. Could be 20 mL/kg/min. Could be 80 mL/kg/min.

                  Page 195.
"Keeping Your Speed. Being able to keep your speed up in a race lasting more than 2 hours is a skill that every racer needs to work on."
At first blush, sounds good. However, no. Not for downhillers. Not for short-track riders. Moreover, it is a fitness, not a skill we are talking about.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book for Begginers through Hard Core Racers.......2005-08-17

Very informative and an awesome training tool. It has numerous techniques and tips for all aspects of riding and racing. I am definetly a better mountain biker having read it.
