4 out of 5 stars Horrifying tale.......2007-01-07

Despite the excellent writing skills of Gary Cartwright, and he is a very accomplished writer, the story of huge wealth, debauchery, drugs and the callous disregard for human life, is staggeringly horrifying. I blanched at the way that being the possessor of untold millions can cause a person to be completely outside the law and to obviously feel that they can do or say anything they please because they have the wealth to hire the best lawyers in the land to manipulate the facts to give their clients virtual immunity from the laws which govern the ordinary person. The 12 year old step daughter of one of Texas's wealthiest citizens is brutally murdered and his estranged wife and her lover are shot...the lover is killed but the wife survives and, despite the shooter being identified as T Cullen Davis by his wife and several witnesses, he is eventually freed through the work of his equally famous lawyer. By the end of the book, I was so sick of the sleazy people involved that I felt that I needed a shower to wash away the grime. There's no doubt at all that the rich ARE different!

5 out of 5 stars T. CULLEN DAVIS.......2006-10-31

Gary Cartwright is a one of the best authors in Texas, he really understands the state and he has honed his skills for Texas Monthly for years, I love his writings and this is his best. The Cullen Davis trial was a sensation in the 70's and 80's it had everything that makes a great Texas story..oil money, gold digging trailer trash, breast implants, alleged bribery, you name it, it had it. I suppose we will never know if Cullen really commited this henious crime, and Pricilla is dead so nobody really talks about it anymore and Cullen has found Jesus..lord help us...but this book gives you all the details so you can judge for yourself..was justice served?..all i can say is i dont want to be standing too close to Mr. Davis on judgement day..

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book!.......2001-11-23

This was a very good book on the T. Cullen Davis murder trials.
Davis was accused of killing his step daughter and the boyfriend
of his estranged wife Priscilla. Cullen Davis was a multiwealthy
oil field person. After being arrested thw trial was granted a change of venue to Amarillo. Here the scene was taken over by legendary trial lawyer Racehorse Haynes. Haynes proceeded to win an acquittal for T. Cullen Davis. This was noted as being a spectacular trial Davis was again arrested for conspiracy to commit murder once again on his estranged wife and a presiding judge. Davis was put on trial twice before being acquitted. This
book gives excellent detail on these outrageous action that occured in Texas. This book is hard to put down. You will enjoy it.

4 out of 5 stars A Moving Interlude.......2004-05-22

Alhough "Blood Will Tell" is the sixth in the fabulous Kate Shugak series, it is more of an interlude between books rather than a story in itself.

This outing finds Kate reunited with her formidable grandmother, Ekaterina Moonin Shugak, the fabled matriarch of her tribe and of all the native Alaska peoples. Quite against her will, Kate has been roped in by her grandmother into leaving her beloved homestead, where she is just settling down with Mutt in anticipation of a lovely long winter, and traveling to Anchorage to attend the annual native Alaska convention.

As any devotee of this series knows, crowds of any kind are anathema to Kate, and having to attend such a convention is true punishment. But as readers also know, Ekaterina is not to be denied. So Kate and Mutt reluctantly say goodbye to peace and silence and travel off to the convention--only to be entangled in a nasty behind-the-scenes environmental ripoff that will not only cheat Kate's native people, but one that involves murder and danger.

Much more than usual, we earn about the Aleut customs and beliefs, and much more than usual, this reader was moved to tears several times.

A must for fans of this series to read, definitely a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars cool and competent Kate.......2000-02-16

This story begins with the quandry of coming out of the outhouse and finding a moose nearby.Kate Shugak solves this problem and stocks up on meat for an Alaskan winter. As the story continues she goes with her grandmother to Anchorage to help with tribal politics, family matters and corruption. Kate does a wonderful job on her boyfriend's ex-wife and gets talked into going to a party all dressed up.It is a mystery and a story of a women finding her identity. The end is quite a surprise and may bring tears. This series is terrific, informative, and most of all-well written.

5 out of 5 stars Read Now...Don't Wait For The Movie !!.......1999-04-15

With her eloquent writing style, Dana Stabenow gives you a connectedness with the main character (Kate Shugak) that many authors attempt but fall short. A well thought out story with an amazing ending.

4 out of 5 stars Good Alaskan Mystery.......1997-08-14

This book should be read on a cold and rainy night with a fire going in the fireplace, When I read it I had the air conditioner on full blast because it was 106 degrees outside. The beginning was especially good as Kate prepares for a long cold winter on her isolated Alaskan homestead. She then travels to Anchorage at the request of her grandmother. The politics of the tribal council was a little dull, but then the story picks up again toward the end. Ms. Stabenow is definitely worth reading. I'll be looking forward to future books from her

5 out of 5 stars Kate goes to town, stays in trouble!.......1997-08-11

Kate Shugak is a remarkable and likeable woman. From the beginning, when she shoots a moose and chows down with Emaa, her grandmother, to the end, she is the consummate master of her fate. Her self-control and power radiate to everyone around her. Kate follows a path that surprised and refreshed me as she manages to exact revenge on her boyfriend's ex-wife while resolving some major power struggles within her tribe. The homestead won't be the same after Kate gets back from Anchorage. She exhibits qualities that one seldom sees in a female character and in this story, she needs every bit of her instinct & abilities. Kept me guessing right to the end. A satisfying visit to Alaska and very worthwhile

1 out of 5 stars zzzzzZZZZZZZZ.......2003-10-21

I couldn't finish the book. It was so tedious that I fell asleep. If you want a good true crime try: "Scream at the Sky" by Carlton Stowers, "Salt of the Earth" by Jack Olsen or any one of John Walsh's books.

3 out of 5 stars boring.......2003-08-28

I just finished reading this book and was very disappointed with it. He tell everything that happen through the whole trial. All of this could have been left out and then at the end of the book all he writes is the jury knew Ken had killed his wife. Then he just ended the book. He didn't say what the sentence was or how long he will have to serve. This is a very important part of a true crime book'

3 out of 5 stars a bit slow and not as many 'surprises' as the cover says.......2003-08-19

I found this book a bit slow and tedious compared to writings by other true crime writers like Ann Rule and Jerry Bledsoe. The author reveals from the first chapter that Ken is in prison so the book never builds any anticipation as to whether the police will build a case against him. The most interesting thing about the whole book is the eerie similarities to the Michael Peterson case going on right now in NC which is being televised on CourtTV. Actually, that case is more interesting, skip the book.

3 out of 5 stars Blood may tell...but book doesn't do that well..........2003-08-09

Parts of this true crime book were terrific. Particularly the parts about the investigation and the narrative about the life of the Fitzhugh family. However, the last part of the book is a snooze. Smith, who seems to have a talented background, basically gives us trial transcripts for about 100 pages or so, including the DNA evidence. The narrative disappears and is enough to put me to sleep (as it did a few times). The story here could have been told in much more engaging way--transcripts are not that interesting. Also, where was the epilogue? What happened? We know Fitzhugh is convicted, but what about his kids? Bob Brown? What happened to these people? We don't know. Instead, we get some dime story philosophy and a look at Del Mar. Who Cares? There was a much better book to be written on this fascinating case.

3 out of 5 stars The Bizarre Baseball Bat Murder in New Orleans.......2007-01-19

Blood Will Tell, by Joseph Bosco

Early in the morning of 2-24-1984 the Sheriff's Office received a report about a break-in and attempted murder. Husband Kerry Myers went to the hospital, his wife Janet to the morgue. A suspect, Bill Fontanille, was found at another hospital. They were questioned, and their strange story came out. The twenty chapters tell about this case, the `Index' allows references. This book is dedicated to the victim and her children. The title of this book refers to the blood spatter evidence from the victim that should identify the killer (p.70). But what if a man is ambidextrous (p.71)? The blood evidence pointed to one man (p.72). The narrative keeps all points of view going along, like a long newspaper story. Janet had "a really fiery temper" (p.74). [A sign of personal conflicts?]

The book has a lot of background information, or gossip, about the early lives of the people involved in the murder. There was a deep secret in the early lives of Kerry and Bill. Janet had predicted a violent death for herself (p.100)! Billy was a leader and schemer (p.103). Then the new commander of homicide Vincent Lamia decided to reconstruct the crime from the blood evidence (p.110). They contacted Herb MacDonnell for his expertise. The clothing of Bill was "in close proximity to the victim" (p.114). Scratches were found on Kerry's forearms, Bill wasn't scratched (p.125). Expert testimony is basically an opinion (p.134). One problem was the missing exact time of the 911 call (p.141). Evidence collection did not follow procedures (p.144). The jury could not agree, so a mistrial resulted (p.171). Herb MacDonnell recommended Henry Lee as a "first-class forensic biologist" (p.175). Henry Lee said Kerry was present when Janet was killed (p.186).

There is a lot of background material in this book. Leaving it out (as in Chapter 9) would create a faster reading book of about 350 pages with the essentials for this bizarre murder case. Neither Janet, Kerry, or Bill had a "normal" life. [I skipped through some of the extraneous pages, like Chapter 12.] Chapter 13 telegraphs their future troubles. Pages 281 to 296 has the photographs. Chapter 14 tells about the murder, again. The reason for the suspicion is on page 317: it was misery, not money. Could a psychic testify in court (Chapter 15)? Chapter 17 has 18 pages on "Pre-Trial" motions. The trial begins in Chapter 18. Chapter 19 has the testimony of the "most preeminent forensic scientist in the world today" (p.423). Dr. Henry Lee explained blood spatter evidence (pp.423-427). His explanations are understandable and interesting (p.428). Dr. Lee then reconstructed the events from the blood spatter.

Chapter 20 has the "Verdict". Kerry Myers' lawyer asked for a directed acquittal, since Kerry's mere presence does not prove guilt. This was refused. The lawyers made their closing statements. The jury quickly came to a decision, and the verdicts shocked the courtroom: both were found guilty. The `Epilogue' says his research turned up new things. Janet died because she received no medical attention (p.505). There are stories about prior activities of the people. Dr. Lee says the blood spatter on Kerry tells he swung the bat (p.523).
[There were questions raised about seeing Janet's body on the floor. The short days of February could have cast shadows that hid Janet's body if the lights were off (floor plan).]

3 out of 5 stars The Baseball Bat.......2006-12-13

Sheriff Harry Lee of Jefferson Parish still has this item of evidence in a museum of sorts of macabre interest in the Sheriff's Dept. along with other items from momentous trials in our area.
I have a friend who is a deputy on the JPSD who said:

Janet Myers didn't die from any embolism. She was beaten beyond recognition. There was a hole on on side of her head as large as someone's fist. The poor little boy got in the way and this was when Kerry Myers, enraged went after Bill Fontanille. This was part of the reason they fought for real. And they later for an alibi.

Great story. I'm told Fontanille is out early on good behaviour.

Recommended. Especially if you live in Louisiana!

5 out of 5 stars When I was 7.......2004-01-27

This murder happened 2 houses away from me when I was 7. I still remember Mr. Bill walking down my street with that baseball bat, and the screams we heard that night, only to wake up with police and media all over the street. I'm 26 now and I'm going for Private Investigator, I am using this book and my memories for a report for class. This book goes into great detail and is very helpful. This is one of the best true crime books I've read.

5 out of 5 stars A worthwhile read.......2003-11-18

This is one of my favorite true crime books. I really like the author's style of interviewing the key attorneys, investigators, and other key players in the book and letting them tell the story in their own words. Sometime it is a bit hard to follow, due to all of the different narration. However, it is on my top 10 best true crime books due to the detail that the author puts into the book. I wonder how long it took him to write it. You feel like you are there, watching the action unfold in New Orleans.

5 out of 5 stars Should be called the Baseball Bat Killers.......2001-01-07

This is a strange story, to put it mildly. According to a coroner, Janet might have lived if Kerry and his buddy hadn't sat around and discussed what story to tell. The coroner said that while there was a lot of blood, it was an air embolism that killed her.

Dr. Henry Lee's testimony was terrific, logical and easily understood. Of course it helped the prosecution that the jury liked Dr. Lee.

5 out of 5 stars Add a mystery, marriage, and a mother, and you got a winner!.......2001-03-15

The author's first mystery, SOMEBODY ELSE'S CHILD, was a excellent introduction to Theresa Galloway, her husband Templeton, children Aisha and Shawn, and her demanding, familiar mother. BLOOD WILL TELL continues the Galloway series by keeping all of the performers in perfect characterization and by throwing in a mysterious love child in the mix, which leads to theft, spying, and murder. The book was fast-paced and smart, without a lot of ultra-heroics thrown in. With what Theresa had to endure with her pressure-cooker job, her husband's failing business, and her over-opinioned mother calling the shots behind her back, she didn't need it. This was a fun book that won't take long to read, and, hopefully, will expand into several more mysteries involving this group of delightful characters.

I wish Terris would include the phone numbers to her characters. I feel as if I could call them up and give them some help. The story line is as realistic as the characters. I wonder what Momma is up to in the next book?

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, exciting, relaxing reading........1997-09-28

This book was great! Theresa Galloway could be me. The characterers in this book really came alive. Maybe it was because I might have met them before.

The pace of the story makes this book an "I just can't put it down." There was always just one more corner to turn before the mystery was fully unraveled.

      Book Description

When Professor Everett Land is found dead, detective Brandy Mather has a puzzle on her hands. The body is definitely his; dental records confirm his identity. But Professor Land is in his forties and the body is that of a very old man. What could have caused him to age so rapidly? Why is the corpse smiling? Brandy enlists the aid of computer scientist Dan Martin, who is smart, handsome, and anxious to help. Dan is almost too good to be true, and Brandy soon falls in love. But something is off about Dan. . . very off. Brandy’s investigation soon throws her into the midst of small-town politics, bank robberies, and vampires.

      Download Description

The change in Brandy Mather's life begins when a corpse of a very old man is discovered on the campus of Jackson Purchase State University. There is no sign of foul play. On the body is the identification of Professor Everett Land, but Land is a young man. Dental records show that the body found on campus is that of Everett Land. It doesn't make sense; Land was a healthy man in his forties, seen by faculty and students looking perfectly normal just hours before his death. The corpse is of a man over 90, maybe over 100, who died of multiple systemic failure due to advanced age. Brandy enlists the help of Dan Martin from the Computer Science department to search records of Everett Land's past. They discover that about thirty years ago he assumed a new identity, and that under his old name he had reached his sixties. Despite the continuing mystery of the age discrepancy -- how could a man actually in his sixties, seventies and eighties possibly pass for a man in his twenties, thirties and forties? -- the police chief declares the case closed and tells Brandy to get on with her other cases. Brandy can't let go of it, though. Other cases require her time and energy, but when she can, she continues to work on the Land case. Meanwhile, she becomes more and more involved with Dan Martin. Soon she falls in love. Martin, though, has his own mysteries -- the most important one to Brandy being why he does not make love to her. Sometimes he seems to have supernatural powers, but she doesn't believe in such nonsense. Besides, nothing he does cannot be accounted for as his being especially strong and healthy, particularly intuitive and persuasive ... can it? Dan Martin is not who he says he is. What if the vampire is not at the top of the food chain?

            Book Description

Do you ever have butterflies before giving a speech or feel uncomfortable entering a room full of strangers? Everyone has at least a brush with social or performance anxiety. But for more than 20 million Americans -- men, women, and children from all walks of life -- these problems are an everyday occurrence, often depriving them of success and happiness.

Using dozens of cases like these, Drs. Schneier and Welkowitz illustrate the many puzzling forms of social anxiety and the experiences that trigger it. In addition they offer several simple "self-tests" to help you measure your own level of social anxiety -- and provide an easy-to-follow self-help program that will enable you to overcome it at a speed and in a manner comfortable for you. The book also includes information on state-of-the-art psychotherapy and medical treatments and where to find them, as well as guidance for parents of shy children. Whether you live in terror of embarrassment or are just occasionally shy The Hidden Face of Shyness can help you face people with confidence.

4 out of 5 stars General Study Of Shyness And Therapies..........2005-08-11

I recently finished this book and feel it was pretty good overall, aside from a lack of more how to get over this ugly symptom (shyness). If you're looking for more of a self help guide on overcoming shyness, I would search elsewhere; maybe "Painfully Shy" by the Markway's? However, this book is an excellent reference on how, where, and what are the factors which contribute to shyness. As well as some treatments, with drugs that have worked for many. Just feel there should have been more on how to overcome and etc... Like I say though, great reference for understanding the disorder and where it comes from (different sources). It does go into some treatment options and brings up things like seratonin and dopamine in the brain, which both effect social anxiety. Overall, I would recommend the book! Much luck friends, all the best and take it easy...

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book, written by top researchers in the field.......2003-08-04

This book was written under the guidance of Michael Liebowitz - the leading expert on social anxiety disorder. The book is well organized, well written, and highly informative. I highly recommend it to anyone who has an interest in the subject.

3 out of 5 stars good info what shyness is, not enough on what to do about it.......2001-02-26

Most of the books covers what shyness is, why it exists, etc. Only about 25 percent of the book covers what to do about it.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful insight into the types and causes of shyness.......2000-03-13

This book provides an outstanding reference to shyness in various social situations and dives into facinating scientific and biological detail on why shyness occurs. A definate read for anyone who not only wants to overcome shyness but wants to learn more about its evolutionary origins.

5 out of 5 stars very informative and thorough.......1999-08-29

this book was so thorough in describing every aspect of social anxiety. I was able to identify what used to be a problem without a name for me that tormented me all my life when I read this book.
