A Life on Paper: The Drawings And Lithographs of John Thomas Biggers
ASIN: 0292703457 |
Book Description
In 1957, John Biggers traveled to Ghana, Nigeria, and other West African countries in search of an understanding of his African heritage. The deeply felt words and pictures in this book record his discoveries. Biggers provides an intimate view of "the web of life" in West Africa. In his own words, "My intention was to discover and to portray what was intrinsically African. I was not interested in showing the degree to which Africans measured up to American or European standards in materialistic acquisitions; I was solely interested in capturing something universal in the many . . . washerwomen, farming women, fishermen, lumber workers, market women, mothers, fathers, and children. "I envisioned three general geographical areas that offered contrasts: life near the sea, life in the forest region, and life on the open plains. Yet I wanted to show in these contrasting areas a thread of homogeneity that held the people together, that linked them in their struggle, in their destiny. The eighty-nine drawings in this book represent my effort."

Book Description
For more than 20 years, the fashion powerhouses Grace Coddington and Didier Malige have lived together with a menagerie of incorrigible cats. This delightful, giftworthy book records their relationship through photographs (Malige's) and drawings (Coddington's) that document the couple's highly entertaining private and work lives through the eyes of their feline friends. These include Henri, an old-school, catnip-addicted, surfing chartreuse; his sister Coco, a couture-obsessed chartreuse on a sashimi diet; and her pal Baby, who doesn't quite share Coco's discipline, and will, sadly, never fit into a sample size. Then there's Puff, a mixed-up long-hair from Harlem whose curiosity--anyone for fortune-telling at Dave?--hasn't killed him yet; and finally Bart, the Persian youngster who would rather sit on the rooftop terrace than in the front row. The Catwalk Cats, a visual diary introduced by the irrepressible Puff, gives us a window into four madcap seasons in the life of this fabulous furry brigade, with sections devoted to the Collections, the Campaigns, and, of course, the Catfights. At once delightful and dishy, it is both a convincing argument for the fundamental similarities between felines and fashionistas and a moving meditation on love and life as a family.
Customer Reviews:
In a world ruled by felines.......2007-03-15
Coddington and Malige would be up to their ears in catnip offerings. The authors have donated large sums to cat rescue (and convinced others to do the same). The illustrations are zany, artful fantasies that will make you laugh while the photos capture those deep cat feelings that make us fall in love with our pets over and over again. The text is sheer delight--& I promise you that you'll give it more than one read. You couldn't choose a better gift for yourself or anyone who knows what it's like to live with a little cat hair on their clothes, in their food--and wouldn't have it any other way!
Perfect Book For All Cat Lovers.......2007-01-31
Grace Coddington and Didier Malige have written a wonderful book that is both entertaining and moving. While all pet owners imagine the "secret" adventures of their pets, Ms. Coddington and Mr. Malige have created an enchanting version of urban cat life - with charming parallels to their city-dwelling owners. More importantly, this book is a moving tribute to the real importance of companion animals in our lives, to their ability to transform our perspective with their (feline) mystery and inscrutable kitty intelligence. This book is a must-read for any cat lover! - Karen Leslie, Executive Director, The Pet Fund

Book Description
From Savile Row to Carnaby Street, from the bohemian dress of the Oscar Wilde circle in the nineteenth century to the punk street styles of recent years, London has been a significant source of fashion style. This stunning book, a rich and stimulating history of two hundred years of London fashion, explores the circumstances and characteristics that have made the “London look” distinctive.
Focusing on the design, production, marketing, and consumption of clothing during this period, the authors place these activities in the context of social, cultural, and economic change in the capital. They move chronologically, discussing the rise of the West End as a center of fashionable life; the era of imperial fashion when London dominated the world politically and economically; the increasing democratization of fashionable dress; the challenges and conflicts of modernity; the school of couturiers that emerged midcentury; and the rise of the independent fashion designer and small boutiques. Finally they describe the London punks who, toward the end of the twentieth century, theatricalized the street in a mood of social and sartorial dissent and paved the way for postmodern styles.
Lavishly illustrated, the book draws on photographs of the Museum of London’s remarkable collection of objects and images, and material from the London Institute.

Book Description
Tiger is a young, comfort-loving tabby cat, the cherished pet of Sam and Beth, a young newlywed couple. Then trouble strikes in the form of Donna, the couple's new baby. Feeling neglected and more than a little jealous, Tiger misbehaves and is soon relegated to being an outdooor cat. When she herself becomes pregnant, Beth insists she be disposed of, so Sam drops her off at a nearby industrial park. Alone, and with her babies due any minute, Tiger suddenly finds herself adrift in a big, impersonal, and occasionally hostile world. Her odyssey ultimately takes her halfway across the continent, and brings her in contact with such diverse characters as a feminist warehouse worker, a Cajun fisherman, a game warden and his wife, a trio of hoboes, and a Mexican-American family. She is befriended by many, abused by some, but her indomitable spirit always carries her through. Her struggle for survival and her search for home and family is a story animal lovers of all ages will want to read and share.

A Must Read for All Cat Lovers!!.......2005-09-25
This is a lovely book every cat lover should read. Catwalk follows the journey of a gray tabby female cat, and is told in her own words. She is known by various names by the people she encounters throughout the story. I was angered and horrified at the beginning when she is bought only to be dumped later when caring for her is no longer convenient (or appealing). Join her as she walks with a number of people, including a very kind homeless man, in her quest to return to her true home, and her people. I was surprised by the ending, but definitely not disappointed.
A lost cat finds her way back home........2004-09-26
Cathie Freeman has the extradordinary skill of placing the reader inside a cat's head. This adventure story is for anyone who likes adventurs and a cat's. All the book characters are have a unique personality that propell Tiger through a learning experience that eventually brings Tiger home.
On the Road with a very clever cat.......2004-09-25
If you like cats and adventure stories, this is the book for you! Kathie Freeman has created a spunky feline protagonist that you can't help but root for and a colorful world of natural and human wonders for her to explore. Touching, funny, wise & unique - I've never read a book quite like this. I didn't want it to end and hope Ms Freeman writes a sequel :-)
CatWalk To Go.......2004-09-23
I read the full story online when it was published one chapter a month and enjoyed it so much that I bought the print version. I highly recommend this book for all Cat Lovers.
Catwalk.......2004-09-23
This is an excellent story of the events in the life of a cat, both the good and the bad. I closely describes events that actuall happen to many cats, and is told strictly from the cat's perspective. I highly recommend this book.

Who knows what cats do when nobody's looking? Jasper Tomkins knows, and shows, in this charming picture book. One day a man takes his seven cats for a walk in the country. When his back is turned, they do magical cat-things: walk on their hind legs, frolic over water, and form a feline pyramid to navigate through tall grass. Wonderful illustrations and lighthearted text capture the amazing lives of these quizzical creatures.

Customer Reviews:
If you buy this I will lose all respect for you.......2006-12-07
My four year old picked this up at a Scholastic book fair at her school. I have an aversion to the way Bratz look, but figured I could get past it and this would be like many other stupid but harmless children's series paperbacks she enjoys.
No. My main gripes are two. 1) The language is very slangy ("cuz," "totally" used a billion times) which is difficult for beginning readers to grasp and not what they need to be exposed to anyway. 2) The relentless focus in the text, not just the art, on the girls-only posse, looking "super-cute" and other aspects of airheaded-ness. Also, as a minor point, the plot is very stupid.
However, I have to say my four year old daughter seems quite enchanted with her purchase and her two year old brother likes it for the animals in it. I will be sneaking it out of the house at my earliest possible opportunity.

ASIN: 1845203429
Release Date: 2007-08-07 |
Book Description
The 20th Century saw the effective end of haute couture, the rise of prtporter and, finally, the triumph of street fashion. Bonnie English unravels the complexities and contradictions behind these changes to chart the history of modern fashion. What caused the demise of haute couture in the 20th century? What does the "democratisation" of fashion actually mean? Which key designers bridged the gap between "couture," with its associations of elite class and taste, and "street style," a product of tribalism and of popular culture and protest? If fashion imitates art and art imitates life, does life imitate fashion--do we wear the clothes or do the clothes wear us? Setting fashion within its social, cultural and artistic context, this book presents an engaging history of the interplay between commerce and culture, technology and aesthetics, popular culture and pastiche, and fashion and anti-fashion.

From Plant to Blue Jeans: A Photo Essay (Changes)
ASIN: 1845131118 |
Book Description
Denim: From Cowboys to Catwalks is a one-of-a-kind pictorial history of this illustrious fabric, featuring archival photos from pioneering brands; rare pictures of denim-clad icons; images of denim's role in subcultures from 1950s teens to LA hip hop; examples of rare, collectable garments; a guide to valuable vintage items, and more. The ultimate book on the ultimate symbol of American cool, now updated with new denim styles and redesigned in an affordable smaller format.
The story of denim is a tale rich in paradox. Cherished alike by cowboys and models, the fabric is at once a symbol of the counterculture and the raw material of a major industry. A simple fabric, dating back to 17th-century France, denim today is ubiquitous: Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood have pushed it into the forefront of high fashion; Calvin Klein and Giorgio Armani have made it the basis for billion-dollar brands.
Denim: From Cowboys to Catwalk delves deep into the archives to trace the origins and development of this celebrated fabric. It features rare pictures of denim-clad icons, like Marilyn Monroe and Steve McQueen, plus specially commissioned photos of rare and classic garments from the 1880s to the present day. Complete with a glossary and a guide to valuable vintage items.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book, Love Denim.......2006-01-26
Anyone with an interest in denim will find this wonderful book to be a very easy and enlightening read. The pictures are all bright, clear, and of high quality. There are several great images of musicians and celebrities wearing denim (Elvis, Marvin Gaye, Miles Davis) as well as close-up shots of vintage jeans (The first known pair of Levis!). Not only are the pictures great, but the book is written in a manner which is easy to digest. The subject ranges from the history of denim to current trends. It also contains a glossary of terms for quick lookup so if you need to be reminded what selvage or sanfordized is, it's there for you.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in fashion and denim, or simply anyone who wears a pair jeans.

The perfect book for any supermodel fan!.......2000-11-09
Whether you're a fashion aficionado or just a supermodel fan, this book delivers not only eye candy (Linda posing as a manniquin), but also info about rising models Emma Blocksage (the platinum blonde Elite of the year winner) and Lonneke (Cover Girl spokesperson).
Nonetheless, the book has an ample amount of pictures of 90's supermodels that you won't need to go anywhere else to re-celebrate to reign of the supermodel.
so-so.......1999-04-15
Beautiful pictures though not enough of them. Could use more of everything, but worth pouring over.
Good profile of the supermodels.......1999-04-01
I don't own this book yet, but have looked at it various times. It gives a good overview of the top models of the time, although this book is dated, and you won't find today's hottest stars like Maggie and Erin.
I'd say that this book is a must in any fashionista's collection.

Not worth it.......2007-07-15
First off, this book is very small, making it a bit difficult to read. Secondly, there are very few instructional pictures, if any at all. Thirdly, the text is pretty basic advice you could find in any makeup book. And lastly, I expected some truely interesting and innovative stuff from a book called "Catwalk Looks" but was completely disappointed and returned this item. Spend a few more dollars and pick up "Making Faces" by Kevyn Aucoin or "Make-Up : Fresh Ideas for Fantastic Looks" by Bernadine Bibiano instead.
