While this book covers information that is of interest to TCM practitioners and lay people alike, it does so in a disorganized manner. One would think that a book on pulse diagnosis might start with describing the attributes of a pulse. Defining the terms used to describe the pulse would be a good place to start. Perhaps then one could go into how to take a pulse and what to look for. Unfortunately this book violates all standard pedagogical principles. Terms are used before they are defined. Circular definitions are used and information is presented in a redundant manner. While the information is interesting, the book should have been written in a much clearer fashion.

The Secret of Chinese Pulse Diagnosis is essentially an extended commentary on the Bin Hu Mai Xue (the Lakeside Master's Pulse Treatise), also known by its author's name, Li Shi-zhen. Organized for teaching, and incorporating in its second edition suggestions from Bob's students, The Secret of Chinese Pulse Diagnosis is a thoroughgoing treatment of Li Shi-zhen's system of pulse diagnosis for beginners and experienced practitioners alike.

The thesis of the book is that the challenges of pulse diagnosis are not mystical, nor principally dependent on the mastery of physical skills; rather, the essential task is to internalize the descriptions of the 27 pulse images of Li Shi-zhen's systems. Having done this, it is a relatively straightforward matter to distinguish them in clinical practice. Bob Flaws offers exceptionally clear descriptions of the pulse images and their ramificiations. He also compares and contrasts the Li Shi-zhen system, which is the one commonly used in China, particularly in herbal medicine, with the Nan Jing (Classic of Difficulties) and Mai Jing (Pulse Classic) systems. The Nan Jing and Mai Jing systems are seldom used in Chinese medicine, but are important in some styles of Japanese and Korean acupuncture, so it is interesting to see the distinctions side-by-side.

The Secret of Chinese Pulse Diagnosis should be the gold standard for English-speaking students of Chinese pulse examination, since it is clear, practical, comprehensive, and enjoyable to read.

Comprehensive Coverage of a Challenging Subject.......2007-01-11

Having taken the basic level of instruction in this type of pulse diagnosis, I have to say that even with support, the very comprehensive nature of this massive tome is challenging. On the other hand, what Dr. Hammer is intending to do is to clarify and perhaps enlarge a particular method of pulse diagnosis. It is a refreshing change from what to my thinking is an endless rehash of quotes from Classic volumes translated from Chinese, or rewrites of same. Li Shi Zhen's work notwithstanding, we need more people to bring this type of material forward if pulse diagnosis is to be promoted fully here in the west. Dr. Hammer has tried mightily to be specific and describe both the pulse qualities and their implications from both his and his teacher Dr. Shen's point of view. Anyone wishing to see a more complete (if frighteningly detailed) discussion of pulse diagnosis should at the very least read and give some serious thought to what's presented by Dr. Hammer here, even if they are skeptical about the approach. This book should taken seriously by all English speaking Chinese medicine practitioners, whether they ultimately agree with it or not. It has that much to say. I myself am still trying to get a handle on the initial material. The book has few competitors in english in terms of detail and possible clinical benefits for the reader. What I have already got from it has changed my practice.

a new approach to an old skill.......2002-01-06

I was looking for a book that can teach me the secrets of pulse diagnosis but the problem was the terminology. I went to seek help from aryvedic practioners but could not comprehend. "Chinese Pulse Diagnosis" is a readable and highly informative approach on the subject. Pulse diagnosis is a difficult art to master and more difficult is its teaching. Leon I. Hammer has used the latest method of teaching for this ancient art which I hope will give a new life to art. I understood many things of the art for the first time though I read them in many other books before.

The Bin Hu Ma Xue, from which this translation was taken, was first written in 1518, and has been a necessary component of acupuncture education for over 500 years. This translation develops each of the basic pulses and their combinations, explaining the essentials of pulse diagnosis: depth, position, relation to areas of the body, seasonal variation, and organ relationships. The four principal pulses are detailed and explained and the variations of each are described. The significance of each pulse and variation is presented in Oriental medical terms.

Each of the 27 pulse states is compared to associated pulses according to their relation to the cun, guan and chi positions. The significance of each pulse in practice is described. The appendices present a Pinyin and character glossary and tables of information for easy reference for all standard pulses. Nearly 80 illustrations of pulse types are included, graphically represented as "waves," following standards used in China. The combination of text and graphics makes this the most accessible reference to understanding Chinese pulse diagnosis.

First published in 1981, this is among the oldest, if not the oldest translation into English of Li Shi-zhen's Bin Hu Mai Xue, or Lakeside Master's Treatise on the Pulse. Although Bob Flaws' Secret of Pulse Diagnosis is perhaps more engaging, this is a fine presentation of the Bin Hu Mai Xue material.

All aspects of the Bin Hu Mai Xue are present here, including relevant theory, techniques of palpation, normal pulse images, pathological pulse images, and special chapters on pregnancy, pediatric examination, and the pulse images of the eight extraordinary vessels. Each pulse image is diagrammed for the benefit of visual learners, and there is a glossary of pulse image names and disease descriptions which gives an English translation, Chinese characters, and Pinyin romanization with tone marks for each entry.

This book is succinct, reasonably clear, and can serve equally well as a reference or a class textbook.

Ive been reading TCM books for some time now. I find this book full of uselful information. But it could include some graphs or pictures about the points used to taking the pulse. It only explains their positions in a small paragraph and in my opinion not very well. But I still think it is a must have.
