3 out of 5 stars A good story to speed read without remorse.......2007-01-31

This review is for the MacAdam/Cage hardcover edition, October 2004, 248 pages. WELCOME TO THE FALLEN PARADISE is Dayne Sherman's debut novel.

At age 18, Jesse Tadlock joined the army to escape the feuding violence of Baxter Parish, Louisiana. He left the love of his life, Penny Nesom behind, not even writing her a letter. Twelve years later Jesse's mama dies and leaves him sole beneficiary of a thirty-thousand dollar insurance policy. Jesse returns to Baxter and buys ten acres and a house in rural Mount Olive. Things are looking good for Jesse. Penny walks back into his life without one word of complaint for being dumped and forgotten for twelve years. Then, the morning after Jesse moves into the house, he is confronted by Cotton Moxley toting a rifle and accompanied by a massive pit bull. Cotton tells Jesse he has seventy-two hours to get off his land. The feud begins.

The story opens with a well crafted prologue set in 1975, two years before Jesse joins the army, when Jesse is helping his kin dig the grave for his cousin. These five, tightly written pages tell about Jesse's family, their mannerisms, the community where they live, its topography, economy, mores, religion and violence. The next twelve pages of good writing provide essential back story leading up to the narrative present, May 1989, when Jesse returns to Baxter Parish. Then the story flounders for the twenty-some pages. Jesse drives the interstate, watches his dog nap, takes a shower, drives to his aunt's home, and does other mundane things which, as described, he could be doing anywhere. Unlike the prologue, the narrator portrays Baxter County as if he were speeding down the highway while reading a roadmap.

Jesse is a young man who shuns violence but is forced to confront it. His character is well drawn. His Uncle Red comes off as the classical Red Neck, and Cotton Moxley is the larger-than-life despicable slime-ball living in filth. The other cookie-cutter characters are nondescript. Even Penny, the love of Jesse's life, is described only as tall with dark brown hair in a ponytail. Her personality is just as exciting.

The plot, once started, moves along at a nice pace, plausible and entertaining but not predictable beyond the certain demise of the fiend Cotton Moxley. Beyond the prologue the prose is unremarkable. Here's a good story to speed read without remorse.

5 out of 5 stars Rings with authenticity.......2006-05-17

They call Louisiana the "sportsman's paradise," but in this case paradise is fallen. The grave-digging opener put me in mind of WISE BLOOD, and chapter after chapter Sherman delivered on that promise with plenty of corruption and ol' time religion. The novel rings with authenticity. Baxter Parish is a place where the fringes are mainstream. As wild as Moxley gets, and as extreme as the Tadlock response can be, I never once doubted the truth of it. Jesse Tadlock returns home with dreams of the garden, only to find a serpent bent on devouring him. The story may be simple, as an earlier review noted, but the emotions underneath are complex and stirring.

4 out of 5 stars My Favorite Beach Read of the Summer.......2005-08-24

I devoured this book on Cocoa Beach on a single day in August. I don't know what scorched me more, the prose on my brain or the Florida sun on my forehead. If this book hasn't been optioned in Hollywood, some slick with a PRODUCER vanity plate has missed the gravy train. When is this kid's next novel due?

5 out of 5 stars really good novel with sense of place and people.......2005-07-02

I liked this a lot, and think it was very well done. I have already told two writers I know about it. It held me all the way through.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable southern literature. Glad it's on my shelf........2005-02-25

Sherman writes a good story. I can't explain why it held my interest so well because the plot was anything but complex. If you are a fan of literature about the haunted landscape of the South, you should give it a try.

Take Big Al, an inept minor-league Mafioso who's boss of a New York fish market, and send him to Key West. Have a rival who'd like to take over the market put out a contract on said mobster. Then give the hit man just enough information to make sure he fingers the wrong guy. That's not hard when both the target and an innocent tourist have the same vanity plate, even though one's a short guy with a big dog and the other's a big guy with a small dog. At first the only thing Big Al of the Mob and Big Al the furniture salesman from New Jersey have in common is their desire for a few days of R and R in the Sunshine State. But by the time the salesman's been nearly done in by a ton of rancid calamari and has narrowly escaped death by stuffed sailfish, there's another link between the two Al's, and therein lies the tale. That link is a beautiful woman named Katy Sansone.

Will Big Al the Good end up with Katy, the dissatisfied girlfriend of Big Al the Bad? Perhaps, and between the setup and the payoff there are plenty of laughs and a few implausible coincidences. Laurence Shames's seventh Key West adventure is a good read for a day at the beach or an afternoon in the hammock for mystery fans who can't wait for the next Carl Hiaasen. --Jane Adams

Book Description

Before mild-mannered furniture salesman Al Tuschman left New Jersey for a week in Key West, he hadn't an enemy in the world. But a series of puzzling assaults on his privacy, his sanity, and his life has turned his stay at the tasteful Paradise Hotel into Tropical Hell. Maybe it's the humidity. Maybe the Sambuca. Or maybe it's the nickname emblazoned on his license plate: Big Al.

For Big Al Marracotta, Mafia capo, a Florida getaway means outrunning a career in crime and rancid calamari. For Katy Sansone it's a bid for sunshine and self-respect--until a case of mistaken identity pits the confused woman against a bafflement of Als and more danger than any one of them had reason to pack for. Now, if Tuschman doesn't watch his back, somebody's going to be reporting the death of another salesman. . . .

4 out of 5 stars Fun, like a vacation in the Keys should be.......2005-07-24

Most of the reviewers here agree that this book isn't an example of "high art", but if you're looking for fun reading, (or in my case, fun listening) look no further than Welcome to Paradise by Lawrence Shames. It is a very cleverly plotted story, with intertwining themes, parallel story lines, true to form characters, all leading up to a big mano-a-mano climax in the parking lot at the end. I really enjoyed the book's descriptive elements of the Florida Keys -- the beaches, the sunsets, the dive bars, the chickens, the nudist hotels, etc. it all made me feel like I was "on vacation" like the characters in the story. It's such a fun and funny gangster/mistaken identity/love/transformational story that I'm surprised that it hasn't been picked up by some Hollywood producer and made into a movie. The Farrelly brothers could probably do it justice. There isn't any big moral to the story, other than "stick up for yourself", as far as I could see, and there's no deep and painful introspections on life. So, in sum, it was exactly the way a vacation should be -- a nice, sunny escape.

3 out of 5 stars so fluffy you'll think it floats..........2003-12-29

'Welcome to Paradise' is one of those "read and forget"-type of books. It'll bring a few smiles, and it is certainly easy enough to read. But this book is the literary equivalent of empty calories, which is sad because Shames has written novels that are both funny and with some bite (..'Sunburn' is my favorite).

As for the plot, it is innocent nonsense about a good guy salesman from Jersey on holiday in Key West being hounded by some not-too-bright thugs. It's all a simple case of mistaken identity. Throw in a mutual love interest and ... that's about it. Nothing more to it.

Bottom line: mindless, juvenile humor in a short book with no pretentions.

5 out of 5 stars "It's worth reading twice".......2001-04-12

I have read all of Laurence Shames books and find them all very exiting and he keeps you on the edge of your seat. I thought Welcome to Paradise is one of his best yet. It seems that every book he writes just gets better. This book was so good that they could make a movie about it. In all of Shames' books the one thing he has common is Bert the Shirt. I have grown to love that old man. Everyone of his books are different and all are exciting books. They are "can't put it down" books.

5 out of 5 stars Double Trouble.......2000-06-23

In this book the author starts with a "what if". What if there were two people with the same nickname and vanity plate, in the same place, at the same time. What if some bumbling mobsters got them confused. It is that situation that Big Al, the furniture salesman from New Jersey, finds himself in. He can't figure out why his luck has turned so bad.

From this premise a humorous book unfolds. When it is finally all settled, we have learned all about who is brave and who isn't, in the book, and in real life. There are messages in the humor about good versus evil, and about all of our self images. This is one of Mr. Shames' best works. My only complaint is that it was over far too briskly. I couldn't put it down.

4 out of 5 stars Very Well Done In It's Simple Form.......2000-06-22

When Reading Laurence Shames novel "Welcome to Paradise" don't go looking for some deep impacting novel. Shames takes a simple idea keeps it simple throughout the book and gives you a nice quick entertaining read. There are few characters and the pace flows by that this is a one night read.

"Welcome to Paradise" is the typical wrong place wrong time novel. Furniture salesman Al Tuschmann is on vacation in South Florida. Tuschmann is trying to enjoy himself, but is the victim of some bizarre violent acts. Little does Tuschmann know that Al Maracotta a New York gangster is also in town, and a couple of this Al's enemies have hired a couple of roughnecks to make his life miserable. The roughnecks get there information crossed and start harassing the wrong the Al. Throw in a gangster's gal, a couple of strange dogs and the weirdness that is South Florida and you have yourself a nice little scenerio to read through.

I really enjoyed this quick little novel. I have read other Shames novels and though they go a little deeper, this one is my favorite. If you like this style check out Ed McBain's "Downtown" which is about a Florida salesman in New York.

Book Description

The Strait of Gibraltar, the ten-mile-wide waterway separating Europe and Africa, is where, at night, immigrant traffickers pit themselves against two sets of coast guards. The passengers include people such as Kacem, an escapee from the civil war in Algeria; Nuara, with her unborn child, whose husband hasn't been in touch for months since moving to France; and Aziz, the young narrator, and his cousin Reda, severed, in different ways, from their families in southernmost Morocco. They all share a longing to escape, a readiness to risk everything, and the only person who can help them is Morad, an ex-con from French prison who holds court at a back table in Cafe France in Tangier. Tense, dramatic, and bleakly compassionate, Welcome to Paradise is a fictional glimpse into the difficulties facing asylum seekers and a striking portrait of human desperation.

2 out of 5 stars Paradise is Lost and Found........2005-06-02

This is the first novel of the Moroccan Mahi Binebine, and it reflects the rising genre and importance of Moroccan writers, especially immigrants who have decided to live, and write in foreign languages.
The story rotates around eight personalities, who seek a different life in distant European lands. Their story unites because simply they have the common element of traveling in a single framework of time. However, the similarities between them are deeper than mere yearning, want and need to be embraced by the European continent, and seek individuality and liberation. They differ in color, regional belonging, and mostly aspirations and dreams, which always intermingle and interchange. Each and everyone of them has a story to be narrated, a tale to be told, that unfolds and penetrates deep into the characters involved.
The novel as a whole has a high moral purpose; reflecting the life long lived misery of illegal immigrants, their suffering, the death of dreams, and the negative effects of poverty. However, the novel and its narrative often led to a strange sense of boredom and tediousness, which I personally think is the result of the author's background, and his diverse life style; from mathematician, to an artiste and a story teller and narrator. Probably this would have been a great short story, however, in a fully fledged novel it lacks coherence, in-depth, and vitality. Probably Binebine would have made a better impact if he would have concentrated on one character, experience and setting, rather than loose himself and the reader through 8 highly intertwined and complex characters. Probably the concentration on one or two would have granted the novel not only a human dimension, but also a focal point.
No doubt the plight of illegal immigrants and those trying to cross the Straits of Gibraltar merits further research and in-depth analysis. Lets hope Binebine comes up with a more ingenious and inventive narrative next time.

5 out of 5 stars Honors the dispossessed.......2003-06-30

WELCOME TO PARADISE by Mahi BinebineEnglish translation from the French by Lulu Norman Granta Books, 2003, 181 pp., ISBN: 1-86207-517-4 The dispossessed of the world, for whom citizenship must seem utterly without value, often risk life and limb to gain a toehold of a meager living somewhere else. They might be Haitian boat people. They might be Mexican river waders. They might be, by one EU estimate for 2001, any of 500,000 illegal immigrants who left Ceuta, Spain--a postage-sized Spanish enclave on the Moroccan coast--and crossed the Mediterranean for the shores of Spain and greater Europe beyond. With WELCOME TO PARADISE, Morrocan writer Mahi Binebine gives us a stark tale, told in taut, evocative prose, about a group of North Africans at an undisclosed village on the north coast of Morocco who've gathered to make the Mediterranean crossing. All paid fortunes--by their dismal living standards--to jovial Morad (Momo), a go-between, who's made the journey to Europe--and been deported--three times. They wait in the dark on a cold beach for the word from their trafficker, who'll decide when to launch their row boat into a sometimes treacherous sea and past a possibly lurking Spanish coastguard.Chapter by chapter, while the silent trafficker, wrapped in his oilskin, apparently deliberates between go and no-go, we meet all the characters gathered in the cold night, ready to attempt the eight-mile crossing. Telling the story of how each person came to huddle in the dark is the story's youthful narrator, Aziz. He needs the courage of two to keep his nervous cousin Reda with him on this fateful adventure. Stories of desperation brought the two cousins from the interior of Morocco to the coast for this escape. Equally desperate, if differing in the details, are the stories of their companions: two Malians, Pafadman and Yarce, an Algerian, Kacem Judi, a Berber, Yussef, and a woman, Nuara, who brings with her the infant fathered by her husband she hopes to rejoin in Europe, though she hasn't heard from him for more than a year. In one sense, WELCOME TO PARADISE is a testament to what these eight human beings endured just to be able to make this risky voyage across open waters to a better life. As we approach that moment when the trafficker says, yes, and they actually push the boat into the water, we know in certain terms what is at stake for each.Needless to say, this fictional drama happens millions of times each year and it's a daily human struggle lost on many. The illegal immigrant, if successful, usually works invisibly among us; if not, it might be the carousel of deportation or in the shocking extreme, suffocation in a truck or freight container. Binebine succeeds admirably in being a witness and WELCOME TO PARADISE honors Aziz and his dispossessed companions everywhere for whom national borders are barriers to no less than survival. -- Charlie Dickinson 06/29/2003

Plastic surgeon, Dr. Alec Edwards and High School teacher, Dani Morgan have met before, only neither of them remembers. Although a tragic accident brings them together, something more draws them to each other and brings out stronger feelings than either expected. Faced with the ethical question of doctor/patient relations, neither can deny what they are experiencing.

Events unfold that challenge both their feelings for each other, and their belief in everything they thought was true about their world until now. A sinister force tries to separate them. Dani and Alec draw on their love for each other, and their friends love for them to try to overcome an evil hatred that has lasted for centuries and is determined to destroy them.

Another Chance, Another Time is an engrossing and thoroughly enjoyable story that challenges traditional beliefs and brings rise to the question of life, love, and hatred after death.

Whether our lives are predestined to travel the paths that have been tread before, or whether we choose our own path, is a wonderful journey that this book takes us on. With a romance and passion that spans even time itself, I found every minute and every twist and turn of this unexpected plot a great read!

First things first... It has to be stated up front that this reviewer does not like to give 5 Star reviews. For that implies the book is perfect or nearly so. How can a book be perfect? There is always supposed to be room for improvement. But THIS book was phenomenal! As near to perfect as a book can get.

He has spent an eternity of lifetimes trying to protect his soul mate. Every lifetime they find each other, and every lifetime the world interferes and they die miserably. Will their path to destruction be thwarted finally?

Alec Edwards is a brilliant plastic surgeon, on the rise in his profession, and set to be the next Chief of Surgery at the hospital he works in. He is known for his caring bedside manner and always remembered by his patients. But something is missing in his life, something he is not even entirely sure of. Until the day he sees an event that will change his life permanently....

Dani Sinclair was on her way to her dream vacation, one she had been scrimping and saving for over many years. While driving down the highway to the airport to catch her flight, fate intervenes and a careening vehicle crashes into her car, nearly killing her. When a strange man, Alec, comes to her rescue, her heart and soul recognize him, causing her to reach out

From the first moment, Alec knows there is something different about Dani, something which forces him to go out of his way to save her life and erase the physical memories of that near fatal accident. He is drawn to her, as she is to him, for no plausible reason. He is her lifeline, for those closest to Dani know she has an almost obsessive fear of death, and this accident hovered too close to the brink for her. No one knew why... until now.

Fate is reaching out its hands again to claim Dani. Her soul understands that Alec is her other half, the other part of her heart. Many lifetimes they have found each other, lost each other, then found each other again, just in time to die horrible deaths together. He was supposed to be her savior, but he never quite succeeded. Now they have one last chance to set things right once and for all. What they don't know is that an ancient enemy, one who has been with them in every incarnation of their souls, is back again, in hopes of conquering them again. Now Alec and Dani have to use the knowledge gained over several lifetimes to break the curse and be together once and for all.

WOW!!! This book is a surefire winner. It blasts the reader with enough emotional force to keep one enthralled and in its spell, from beginning to end. It is a fast-paced read, full of action as Dani and Alec barrel towards the final resolution of their eternal bond. They are meant to be together and one can't help but long for the happy ending they so deserve. All of the characters are lovingly drawn, vivid and with life all their own, even the villains.

Ms. Snodgrass shows brilliant expertise. Her storyline is fully fleshed out, leaving no doubt as to what is happening or why. She also shows remarkable skill at weaving a mystery, for this reviewer waffled many times over who she thought the true evildoer was. Be forewarned, don't pick this book up unless having plenty of time to read it, for the reader will not want to put it down until it is finished. This story is fantastic, but the true winner is the one reading it, for there is no better prize then this mesmerizing tale. This reviewer can't wait to read the next book by the talented Ms. Snodgrass.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless Tales review 4.5 stars.......2003-02-14

              By TT reviewer Marie Mclean
Dr. Alec Edwards is going to another boring hospital fundraiser. His boss and his wife at the hospital, where he works, have been trying to get him to marry their daughter, who is definitely unbalanced. Alec is definitely not attracted to this woman, but she won't take no for an answer and ruthlessly pursues him.

A car in front of him is in a deadly crash. The man in the car dies, but the woman is still alive. When she opens her eyes and looks at him, she knows him. He is determined that he will not let this woman die. He helps her and stays with her until the ambulance arrives. But he cannot let her go without him and goes in the ambulance with her. You get the sense that he feels an attraction for this woman, yet he can't figure it out. Her name is Danielle Morgan, but he knows she is "Dani".

The story involves Alec and Dani's past lives together, when they were lost to each other in Cypress in 365. He was Demetrius and she was Adia and he left her pregnant and an outcast. Her life was difficult, his family would not acknowledge her and her family would have nothing to do with her because of her shame. He comes back, but he fails her. It continues with other lives they have together. And he continues to fail her.

The story has several interesting twists -- Dani coming to understand her dreams and her feelings and connection to Alec. Alec would not believe in their past lives, but finally -- before it was too late -- he did.

But the story involves more than just their past lives. It involves a sick jealous woman, determined to have Alec, even though he has no interest in her, and the woman's family, who try to get for their spoiled daughter what she wants. This woman confronts Dani and warns her to stay away from Alec. Alec has to convince her that this woman is obsessive, that he is not involved with her and that she is not his fiancée.

The book is far from dull. Not only do we have their past lives together, but it continues with Dani's life being threatened by an unknown woman (nurse), who attempts to poison her in the hospital with morphine and a dirty water solution in her IV.

The story has another twist when Dani is falsely accused of sexual involvement with a minor. Her arrest and trial is very traumatic. But this time they see it through together and Alec does believe that their lives are connected from the past. This time Alec has to be there for Dani, not failing her has he did in the past.

The trial is not that believable. But with the obsession of the "other woman" and her family and the attempt on Dani's life in the hospital, they finally realize that they are meant to be together. Alec has to be there this time for Dani, when she is in danger at the end and they both realize how to right their past lives and get it correct this time.

The person who tried to kill Dani and who bribed a minor to say Dani sexually assaulted him was excellent. I knew it could only be one of three people, and I guessed incorrectly.

The love scenes were passionate. I felt the two of them were meant to be together and I was pulling for them to finally get it right.

It is a wonderful story and I highly recommend it. It had the right amount of love, sex, suspense and this is one I would love to read again. In fact, I look forward to reading more of this author's books.

5 out of 5 stars A skillful weaving of romantic suspense and reincarnation.......2002-12-30

Ms. Snodgrass pulls the reader into her story from page one. Dr. Alec Edwards and Dani Morgan meet by accident -- or was it? It seems that they have been lovers in the past, but something has always happened to keep them apart. Will they succeed this time?
The story is highly enjoyable and a good read. The author skillfully interweaves the reincarnation aspects with romantic suspense elements. There is more than enough suspense, danger and romance to keep any reader interested until the very end.

4 out of 5 stars for never was a tale of more woe.......2002-12-17

Plastic surgeon Alec Edwards and teacher Danielle Morgan meet by chance when Alec saves Dani after a car accident. We discover that these two have been together over the centuries again and again, playing out a doomed romance where the scenario is always similar and where the end is always the same --- death.

The romance between Alec and Dani was red hot and, at the same, tugged at your heartstrings. They tried to so hard to be happy together every time but fate always conspired against them. Also, the author does an excellent job of drawing parallels between social behaviors throughout history. For example, over the ages, people reviled different things like children born out of wedlock or witchcraft. Today, those are not a concern, but we still have other problems which make people want to form rabid lynch mobs and act pretty much the same.

I always enjoy these types of reincarnation stories and I try not to be too analytical but, being me, I can't help but ask questions. My questions are always rather the same: Why is it they only remember their past relationships in this lifetime? Why couldn't they ever succeed in changing their fate before and this time they can? (you knew they would or this would be a tragedy, not a romance). While the resolution in this story is very reasonable, it still does not quite answer these recurring questions solidly. It's always a case of luck --- like "third time's a charm" or something, which isn't a bad thing but I'm always looking for something more concrete, I guess.

Still, that in no way dimished my enjoyment of a very fine tale. Enjoy.
