5 out of 5 stars VISIONAIRE 27 - MOVEMENT.......1999-05-10

I always buy Visioanire due to its original packaging and themes, being infactuated with fashion, photography and film its the only collectors item that satisfies all these areas by binding them together and featuring the cream of each area aswell as up and comming new talent. This edition of the multi format Visionaire publication is let's say very "Moving". It's hardcover 10 layer plus hologram features Kate Moss swinging back and forth in over 10 different positions hence once moved you have a full 3D 10 image hologram giving it extra movement than traditional 2 layer holograms. There are many contributors as usual providing their own insight to the movement theme. (e.g. Steven Klein, Steven Miesel & Mario Testino to name a few) Each editorial is at least 4 pages long and uses transparent pages which layer upon each other to help aid the movements portayed in each editorial. (e.g. one editorial is of a discoball, each page with a different position but once turned in sequence you get a moving discoball which somehow brings the editorial to life through movement.)

      Book Description

This full-color book assembles a fabulous collection of images of astronautics and rocketry. The pictures, both imagined and real, extend from the 16th century to the eve of the Space Age in the late 1950s. Collector Fred Ordway, one of America's first rocket scientists in the post-World War II era, has been a pioneer in making the dreams of spaceflight come true. This realm is populated by heroes and scientists, dreamers and trailblazers. Images abound of square-jawed astronauts maneuvering their craft near Mars and of fantastic vehicles with propulsion ranging from dewdrops (17th century) to antigravity (19th century). Visions of Spaceflight is a compelling mix of the intentionally fantastic and the rigorously scientific.

5 out of 5 stars Fine reproductions of pre-Space Age images.......2004-01-11

This large-format book brings together paintings, etchings and other visual images of how humans envisioned travel to the moon and the planets from early Renaissance times to the 1950's. Most were illustrations accompanying published works of fiction. These images, collected by Ordway, are very well reproduced and have useful captions.

Until the second half of the nineteenth century, these depictions of space vehicles, other worlds, and their possible inhabitants were wildly fanciful. After Jules Verne, improved astronomical observations and better engineering made these visions increasingly recognizable for those who grew up with the Space Age. The book, which includes photographs of early rocket experiments, ends with an extensive section on the 1950's, covering the ideas of Wernher von Braun and illustrated with paintings by Chesley Bonestell and Fred Freeman.

Readers may wonder why there are no visions from non-western cultures; were none sufficiently interesting, or do they really not exist? The foreword by Arthur C. Clarke is disappointingly flippant.

      4 out of 5 stars Well done.......2002-10-11

Beautiful "coffee table" book. The author's love for the pictorial material in his collection and this book shows at every page. The author is at his best with the "post-Goddard" material and 20th century representations of space flight. Being the proud owner of some of the original, older material, I did notice that a couple of captions for Flammarion and Terzi are wrong but I am just being picky... Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Historical Collection.......2001-11-26

All of the paintings in this volume are dated, the paintings are for the most part not accurate as we see spaceflight today, but their historical value is immense. For example, early paintings of the lunar surface often exhibit sharp peaks on mountains, of course we now know eons of cosmic bombardment smoothly rounded most features. Text at the beginning of this book explain how these paintings were collected over many years, they date from before the 1600's to the 1950's, a fascinating story in itself, and there is also a foreword by Arthur C. Clarke. Each painting is accompanied by a caption in this large-format book.

From our perspective today many of these paintings look very quaint, though when they were first published they must have appeared very futuristic. Buy this book for it's historical and art value, not for scientific accuracy.

5 out of 5 stars Five centuries of spaceflight images are presented here.......2001-10-12

Author Ordway's absorption with rockets and spaceflight began before NASA even existed: he was one of the first to work in the space industry and assembled a beautiful collection of images relating to astronautics and rockets. Five centuries of spaceflight images are presented here, in a stunning collection of both real rockets and illustrations of imagined creations. Many a science buff as well as science fiction fans will find Visions Of Spaceflight fascinating.

      5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2001-09-16

Fred Ordway has to be the world's leading space historian. If he isn't recognised as such he darned well should be! True to form Fred delivers an outstanding book filled with beautiful reproductions of some of the greatest space art ever painted. In the past fifty years Fred Ordway's contributions to the documentation of man's preoccupation with the heavens has to be unsurpassed. This book is a brilliant and perfect addition to any space enthusiasts collection. Trust me...buy this book!

        Book Description

The name Henry Solomon Wellcome (1853-1936) is well known as a giant in the world of pharmaceuticals, but most people know very little about his other philanthropic interests. This book brings to our attention the Wellcome museum that he set up, initially a collection of curios for his amusement and to aid students in their medical research. Packed full of photographs, these seven essays approach different aspects of the museum and its collection including its priceless and its banal artefacts. Ghislaine Lawrence looks at the development of the Museum for the Science of History, Francis Knight explores the Wellcome library, the archaeological interests of Wellcome are discussed by Chris Gosden where as John Mack turns his attention to medicine and anthropology. The final two essays look at Wellcome's contribution to modern medicine (John Pickstone) and the human remains within his collection (Ruth Richardson). The book accompanies an exhibition at the British Museum. Contains more than 500 colour plates.

        Book Description

The Imagery of Chess Revisited recovers a celebrated and extraordinary moment in art history: the 1944-45 exhibition The Imagery of Chess, held at the Julien Levy Gallery in New York City. The exhibit was a legend in its own time and has been considered a singular event in the history of art exhibitions ever since. The show's organizers—the influential art dealer Julien Levy, the Surrealist painter Max Ernst, and Dada leader Marcel Duchamp, himself a serious chess player—invited a virtual "who's who" of artists and members of the cultural avant-garde to redesign the standard chess set or otherwise explore chess imagery and its symbolism in bold new ways. Participants included famous European expatriates and soon-to-be famous American modernists: André Breton, Duchamp, Alexander Calder, Ernst, Man Ray, Isamu Noguchi, and Yves Tanguy are among those who contributed chess sets; John Cage and Vittorio Rieti created original musical scores; and Dorothea Tanning, Arshile Gorky, David Hare, Man Ray, Matta, Robert Motherwell, and others produced pivotal chess-related paintings, sculptures, and photographic works.

Featuring new color photographs as well as rarely seen archival images, recollections by participants and their descendants, and period reviews, The Imagery of Chess Revisited includes previously unpublished works. Among them are André Breton and Nicolas Calas's wine-glass chess set and Alexander Calder's chess set made of found materials, in addition to thirty-five of Calder's chess-related drawings. An essay by Larry List explores the chess designs as visual objects and pivotal creations in the context of participating artists' lives and work. Lowell Cross and Paul B. Franklin examine the two musical scores included in the show; and Ingrid Schaffner provides an introduction to the art-world milieu in which The Imagery of Chess took place. 50 illustrations in color, 80 in black and white.

5 out of 5 stars Will prove of special interest to collectors, artists and gamers alike........2007-01-07

At once an art history title and a special source of interest to chess players, THE IMAGERY OF CHESS REVISITED is an outstanding survey of the 1944-45 exhibition of the same name held in New York City, which hosted participants from famous European expatriates and American modernists alike. All contributed chess sets for the project and exhibition, and many produced other chess-related art, from paintings to photos. The IMAGERY OF CHESS REVISITED project grew out of a project to create an exact replica of Isamu Noguchi's 'lost' red and green plastic chess set designed for the original exhibition, and holds numerous previously unpublished works and images which will prove of special interest to collectors, artists and gamers alike.

          Book Description

The twelfth edition of this classic reference work includes:

          • More than 2,000 new entries

          • A total of more than 9,000 entries

          • New features and enhancement of the familiar old features

          • Mapping information on more than 4,000 genes of known function

          • Information on specific point mutations responsible for more than 700 genetic disorders or neoplasms

Mendelian Inheritance in Man (MIM) is a genetic knowledgebase that serves clinical medicine and biomedical research, including the Human Genome Project. It aims to be comprehensive (not only complete, but also collated, integrated, and interpreted), authoritative (not only accurate but also sound in its interpretations and judgements), and timely (not only up-to-date but also historically dimensioned).

From a review of the eleventh edition, Reproductive Toxicology: "Even the convenience of computer-based forms of MIM cannot eliminate the need for MIM in book form. The preface provides a wonderful synopsis of human genetics. The information contained in this text serves as a concise review for those with a genetics background."

From a review of the tenth edition, New England Journal of Medicine: "[Victor McKusick] has been for all these years the shepherd of the development of the field [of clinical genetics]. Perhaps his most important pragmatic achievement has been the 10 editions of Mendelian Inheritance in Man, which rapidly became and has remained the principal source of information on inherited diseases for all clinical geneticists.

"In addition to the erudite entries in the books, the references given with each description represent a magnificent bibliography of clinical genetics. With McKusick's leadership and continued interest in gene mapping, the book also rep-resents an important compen-dium of the location of genes on specific chromosomes.

"The book is a magnificent security blanket for the clinical geneticist and should be in the libraries not only of these specialists, but also of all others who see patients with diseases that have genetic components."

            Book Description

Writer and urbanist Paul Virilio is considered to be one of the most important and incisive contemporary critics of technology and its moral, political, and cultural implications. His latest catalogue, published to accompany an exhibition he has conceived for the Fondation Cartier in Paris, examines the philosophical issues raised by our confrontation with accidents and their impact on our world.

Accidents capture our attention, surprise or shock us, disrupt or ultimately alter the course of our existence. Whether significant or insignificant, benign or disastrous, accidents always reveal something about ourselves and the systems we construct. For Virilio, to invent the ship is to invent the shipwreck, to invent electricity is to invent electrocution. Accidents are consequently, in his view, inherent in all technological systems. This catalogue features over 200 illustrations, including press photographs, paintings, and engravings representing natural and industrial accidents from the past three centuries. It also contains reproductions of the works of the many artists included in the exhibit, most notably Lebbeus Woods, Nancy Rubins, Stephen Vitiello, Cai Guo Qiang, Bruce Conner, Tony Oursler, Jonas Mekas, and Jem Cohen.

Paul Virilio has also invited visionary architect Lebbeus Woods and award-winning journalist Svetlana Aleksievitch to contribute texts to this catalogue. Distributed on behalf of the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain. 200 color illustrations.

              Book Description

Man Ray (1890-1976) has long been considered one of the most versatile and innovative artists of the twentieth century. As a painter, writer, sculptor, photographer, and filmmaker, he is best known for his intimate association with the French Surrealist group in Paris during the 1920s and 1930s, particularly for his highly inventive and unconventional photographic images. These remarkable accomplishments, however, have tended to overshadow the importance of his earlier work-significant not only for comprehending Man Ray's future artistic development, but also for fleshing out our understanding of the visual arts in America during one of the most important and crucial phases of modernism's evolution.

The book, and the exhibition for which it serves as the catalogue, concentrate on Man Ray's production from 1907 to 1917. Conversion to Modernism is the first comprehensive, fully illustrated work to examine this artist's seminal years, beginning with his high school years in Brooklyn, his studies at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design in New York, and the time he spent in life drawing classes at the more progressive Ferrer Center.

From 1913 to 1915, Man Ray lived in a small artists' colony in Grantwood, New Jersey. It was here, studying with Samuel Halpert (a former student of Matisse), that he began to become the artist we know today. Throughout this period, Man Ray's work developed methodically, in a gradual but certain evolution to abstraction. This progression culminated in 1916 with the publication of a remarkably early and important formalist tract, wherein the flat planar surface is established as a common vehicle of expression for all the arts: music, literature, dance, architecture, sculpture, and painting. The last section of the book includes recently discovered photographs and other works influenced by the emergent Dada movement. Here is Man Ray in recognizable form just before he leaves the country for France in 1921.

                Book Description

Inspired by the centenary of the Wright Brothers' historic feat at Kitty Hawk, this catalog of the North Carolina Museum of Art's kaleidoscopic exhibition shows how the human obsession with flight provided fertile ground for contemporary artists in every imaginable medium.

One of the earliest and most sustained dreams human beings have nurtured has been the wish to fly. And although flight and aircraft have figured prominently in contemporary art, until now this intersection has not received much critical attention. The NCMA exhibition and this sumptuously illustrated catalog will undoubtedly rectify that omission.

Defying Gravity features approximately ninety major works of art in varying styles and themes by forty-seven individual artists and four pairs of collaborators, including such internationally renowned figures as Jonathan Borofsky, Vija Celmins, Chris Drury, Andreas Gursky, Malcolm Morley, Panamarenko, James Rosenquist, Ed Ruscha, Frank Stella, and Wayne Thiebaud. Younger artists like Doug Aitken, Vera Lutter, and Rosemary Laing are also represented. From Icarus's tragic flight and the cumbersome contraptions of early aviation to the gleaming might of contemporary bombers and the sobering anxiety with which many regard aircraft since the World Trade Center attacks of 2001, the images collected in Defying Gravity are both arresting and provocative, comical and dreamlike. Together with commentary by the curators—including entries on each artist in the exhibition—and an essay by the highly regarded cultural historian Robert Wohl, this beautifully produced book leads to an artistic understanding of the distinctly human impulse to defy limitation, and of the wondrous and terrible results that impulse can yield.
