"Mom knew - vinegar is magic. It makes chocolate cakes fluffier, candy tastier, windows more sparkling, even socks whiter. This book tells all there is to know about using vinegar for better gardening, cleaning, health, and, of course, cooking." (reviewed by Carol Garriott)

2 out of 5 stars Too much ammonia, not needed food recipes.......1999-10-24

I bought this book for the purpose of making home-made(safer than store-bought) cleansers. Most of her cleaning recipes call for ammonia-which is not good for your health. It talks about how to make different vinegars, which is acceptable although I don't think I would make my own. But I do not understand why she included food recipes that call for some(2-3tbs) vinegar.(Sloppy Joes, BBQ hamburger, etc) There are plenty other cookbooks for these types of recipes.

5 out of 5 stars A "must have" for every household........1998-07-09

The receipe for the Kitchen Grease-Cutting Cleaner is worth the cost of this book. Whether you need to remove set-in stains in vintage clothing or clean a mildewed shower curtain, this book has lots of great ideas that really work. It even has suggestions for losing weight! Well, we'll see.

5 out of 5 stars A WONDERFUL BOOK TO READ AND USE EVERYDAY!!.......1997-07-20

I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE WHO LOVES SOMETHING SIMPLE THAT DOES SO MUCH!!!!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A disappointment in an otherwise fine series.......2006-06-14

This has been an excellent series with a compelling protagonist, fast-paced plotting, psychological depth and some great depictions of New York and Chinese-American culture. But this book isn't up to the level of the others in the series - the author doesn't seem to have put her usual care into it, and the conclusion feels downright rushed and a bit perfunctory. It's still worth reading, but I hope the author will drag herself away from her other series and give April the attention she deserves.

3 out of 5 stars Abrupt ending, but still worth reading.......2006-05-31

I have always enjoyed reading Leslie Glass's books involving April Woo and Mike Sanchez. And this one is a good read, but not definitely not one of the better books in the series. The ending comes way too quickly, with not much explanation as to the killer's motivation. After that, there's a quick two-page wrapup of the remaining story line, but more was definitely needed.
In addition, this book had foreshadowing in odd places, mentioning that so-and-so was making a mistake doing such-and-such. (Sorry to be so vague, but I hate spoilers.) As a result, you know something is going to happen to the protagonist very soon, which reduces any surprise factor in the coming paragraphs.
Overall, this book only rates three stars, but I will still read the next book in the series.

5 out of 5 stars As always, this Leslie Glass book had me on the edge of my seat in anticipation!.......2006-05-09

I LOVED this one. I couldn't put it down. Leslie Glass has a writing style that is completely captivating.

Her characters' situations are so "relatable" and the characters themselves just seem to come alive on the pages. She has a genuine talent for making one feel like these are real people who one knows!

I can't wait for her next book! The richness in her descriptions is amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Clean Kill.......2005-10-21

Leslie Glass has brought April Woo to a new high. Could not wait for this one.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing special.......2005-10-07

I find that I am reading Leslie Glass novels for old times sake more than anything else. When I started reading them, I really loved the character of April Woo and the relationship with her Chinese family. Their scenes were so funny. In addition her relationship with her partner, Mike Sanchez had a lot of chemistry. These days Skinny Dragon Mother and Mike are barely in the novels and the plots have not been that compelling. This addition to the series is disappointing in that it does nothing to move the characters forward. The secondary cast was not likable and I would have killed them all off.

Book Description

Kate Baneberry died with a whimper, not a bang. One moment she was alive, an attractive woman married to a successful businessman. The next moment she was dead, and no one had the slightest suspicion until a lawyer got involved–and shook the legal system to its core....

Living on Alabama’s warm, windswept Gulf Coast, Tom McInnes attracts troubling cases and troubled clients. With the help of Dr. Kai-Li Cantil, a gorgeous psychologist with a knack for unraveling other people’s secrets, McInnes pries into Kate’s death and soon knows it was no accident. In a world of multimillion-dollar lawsuits, Kate Baneberry signed her own death warrant when she did her civic duty and served on a jury. Because someone out there has grabbed justice by the throat and won’t let go–until all the right people die....

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars An entertaining airplane read.......2006-07-04

Attorney Tom McInnes is hired by a young woman whose mother died while on jury duty. He soon uncovers that her death resulted in a new jury member, a large award to the plaintiff and the law firm handling the case. With the help of a psychologist, Kai-Li, he discovers this law firm has had an unrealistically large number of hold-out jurors become sick and the replacement juror enabling a large fee for the lawyers. But the information doesn't come without Tom being stalked, threatened, beaten and attempts to kill him.

The author spent a fair amount of time trying to explain the lawyer's attraction to violence but I still wasn't convinced. There is a love interest but it was nice that they didn't immediately fall into bed and pledge undying love. There was the required threatening sidekick although I learned very little about him. I imagine I'd feel differently had I read the first two books of the series. There was some good tension and I enjoyed the book being set in Mobile, Alabama which is a different setting from most. Falling into the category of a good airplane book, I found it rather unbelievable but entertaining.

3 out of 5 stars Undelivered Early Promise.......2003-11-25

This was my first in this series and unless I'm desperate in an airport with a delayed flight, it will be my last.

From the beginning scene, we have a potential client (but not a love interest because we're told she's not particularly attractive) tell the main character (Tom McInnes) that she's "been told he's smarter than God." Without commenting on the latter's relative smartness, I can tell you that Tom falls considerably short of divine intelligence.

The main character is really the early villain who it appears is being prepped for future installments. I didn't find him sufficiently developed.

Tom seems to stumble towards a final resolution with regular discussions of his attraction to violence. The reason for the original crime is pretty much ignored although quite obvious and then dealt with at the end in a somewhat off-handed fashion.

The characters were fun but they seemed like part of a formula. The main character is a smart lawyer who breaks the rules. Sancho Panza is a 6'6" PI with an ex-stripper girlfriend. The love interest finds the men's behavior and speech Neanderthalic. Where have I seen variations of these characters before?

Starts out well but just stumbles along to a tidy but less than stunning conclusion.

Cotton candy.

5 out of 5 stars Stewart scores another hit!!.......2002-05-03

Another great work by Mike Stewart!! I won't go into the plot, which has been summarized before. Unlike some other authors, Mike Stewart is sticking with the same basic formula that has made him successful with his previous books - the book is well written, interesting, and, full of action. Zybo is a character that you'll immediately become fascinated with.

Overall - GREAT book!! Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars A Sparkler.......2002-04-29

Mike Stewart fulfills the promise shown in "Sins of the Brothers" with this beautifully crafted thriller. He grabs you on page one and doesn't let loose until a few days after you have closed the book. Even then, his puzzling client and the multi-faceted contract criminal, Zybo, will stay with you.

What begins as a suspicion of highly imaginative jury tampering expands to include Mobile's judiciary, a blue ribbon law firm, and law enforcement. None of the characters are quite centered. There is not always a clear line between the good guys and the bad. We get answers that open new questions and drive this highly charged story from climax to climax.

Tom McInnes is a likeable protagonist, but contradictory enough to keep engaging us. It helps to keep in mind Tom is a member in sometimes not-so-good standing of an Alabama time honored and influential family. His daddy is a man to be reckoned with and is an important, if unseen, part of Tom's makeup. I liked the reality of Tom being a reluctant lover. In spite of psychologist Kai-Li Cantil's awesome perfections, Tom is understandably gun shy from a recent bruising romance. When plot considerations dictate Kai-Li's hiding out in his house for protection, Tom is faintly irritated at too much togetherness.

Mike Stewart brings to mind James Lee Burke's power of describing lush southern scenery. The tempers and moods of Mobile Bay are part and parcel of this fascinating yarn. "Clean Kill" is an excellent offbeat thriller sure to win Mr. Stewart many new fans.

4 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 stars.......2002-04-05

This being the first Mike Stewart book I've read, my goal will now be to read his previous Tom McInnes novels.

This time around McInnes gets hired by Sheri Baneberry. Sheri's mother was serving on a jury when she mysteriously died of what seemed to be salmonella poisoning. What Sheri wants to find out is whose fault it was. As McInnes and his partner, Joey, start researching the mother's death bad things start happening. Tom's life is now in danger. He gets blackmailed for murder and he also becomes disbarred. As he gets closer to the truth, death gets closer to him. With the help of an Asian-American doctor (psychology) who soon becomes a close female companion, and Joey, his trusting investigator, Tom works his magic and soon discovers the truth.

Stewart's way with words makes this novel one heck of a good read. A strong descriptive narrative invites one to visit Mobile, Alabama even in the dead of winter. A well plotted, fast moving story that I really enjoyed.

Highly Recommended.

    Book Description

Frank Quintana was born into a niche between two societies and accepted by neither. His father was Hispanic, his mother Anglo, and in a socially divided town like Halliburton, he would be forever relegated to cutting grass and doing menial jobs. Then he discovered a way out: excel at football, win a scholarship, become quarterback for a professional team. Along the way, he would marry the girl of his dreams, Gina Westcott. Together, they would escape the social quagmire that enveloped Halliburton.

From his hospital bed, he told his mother, "It's an evil thing, to destroy a young man's dreams."

She said, "Frank, there are things more important than football." He said, "Mom, there's nothing more important than football."

Judge Wilson D. Westcott destroyed Quitana's chance of achieving his dream when he sent three thugs to break Quintana's knees, to spirit off Gina Westcott to a private school up east. His mistake was that he ignited Quintana's fierce desire to seek retribution.

The murder of the Judge's son, Thomas, set into motion the forces that would destroy either the Judge or Quintana. Only one could survive.

    3 out of 5 stars Messy Deaths!.......2003-07-22

Murder, deceit, and greed (both in terms of money as well as power) in a small town have often been used as themes or plot points in many mysteries. The old standards as well as a cast of at times rather stereotypical characters are used to the usual ends in this average novel. But, while the read is average, this novel appears to be first in what could be an interesting series as long as the author receives some judicious editing.

Judge Westcott is the power broker in Halliburton, Texas. He is the rich, white power in this Southeastern Texas County and always has been. Twelve years ago he sent some goons to kill Frank Quintana when he tried to elope with Westcotttýs daughter, Gina. But good goon help is so hard to find and instead of killing him as had been planned, all they managed to do was ruin Quintanaýs knees so that he could never play football, much less be the idolized star Quarterback ever again. While Quintana lay in the hospital recovering and fuming, Westcott had his daughter shipped off east making sure that they would never see each other again.

Quintana recovered and after a stint in the Military Police, he came home to Halliburton with justice (revenge) on his mind. He won election to the Sheriffýs office beating out Burleson T. Norris, the crooked incumbent Sheriff. Then he started trying to find a way to bring down Judge Westcott. Unfortunately with the next election just weeks away, Quintana hasnýt made any progress in his goal and Westcott is doing everything possible, legal and otherwise, to make very sure Norris wins the election.

But a murder has a tendency to make everyone change priorities.

ýThe glassy eyes of Thomas Westcott, president of the Halliburton National Bank stared at Quintana. An ornate ice pick with a handle of chrome and smokey plastic protruded from the top of Westcottýs head like a gear-shift on some fancy sports car.ý

Between the fact that he was the bank president as well as the fact that he was the son of Judge Westcott, Quintana knows that in addition to a murder he has a real political mess on his hands. There is also the problem that the body has been dumped behind a bar in the Hispanic side of this very racially segregated town and there are virtually no clues. As he begins his investigation, Quintana knows the potential suspect list is long and that Norris will provide running commentary to the media as to how Quintana is mishandling the investigation.

At the same time, one of the goons responsible for ending his playing days, Frank Cousins is about to be released from Huntsville after serving a robbery sentence. Then Gina shows up in town, ostensibly because her brother is dead, but she does not spend much time grieving. Instead, she wants to pick up right where they left off as if the past twelve years and lack of contact do not matter. Then, Quintana gets a politically sensitive as well as problematic missing womanýs case dumped into his life. And if that isnýt enough, Quintana has another love interest that he is conflicted about, a large dog named Bozo that likes to eat cats, and a murderer who seems to like to kill as the bodies start piling up.

With all those elements and a few others not mentioned, this should have been a good read. Unfortunately, that was not the case as the main problem with this novel, is reader boredom. These characters never come alive and for the most part seem to be based on old westerns to the extreme. In particular, Judge Westcott is racist and sexist beyond all rationale belief all the way to the bitter end. He is so far over the top it is impossible for the reader to suspend his or her disbelief and accept the character as written.

Then you have the half Hispanic, half White Quintana. Supposedly he is not comfortable in either the White manýs world or the Hispanic manýs world. He certainly says it a lot and thinks it a lot, but the issue never really comes alive for the reader. The same is true for his love life. The reader is supposed to feel his inner conflict and tormented need for both of the women in his life (for different reasons) and thanks to patches of stilted and unreal dialogue, never makes the connection.

However, despite its limitations, the author does show promise in his work. The mysteries involved in this novel are complex and the scenes depicting actual action did come alive for the reader. Some of the characters, the less obviously stereotypical ones seem to have potential. This novel appears to be the first in what could be an interesting series. If it is a first novel, the limitations described are understandable and to be expected and with some careful editing assistance, the author could deliver an interesting and enjoyable series.

              Book Description

A fairy tale for grown-ups of all ages...

Joanna has lived in solitude for as long as she can remember. One day, when she goes to write up her diary, she discovers that she seems already to have done so - and this discovery leads her to the Far-Enough Window. Under the guidance of Robin Goodfellow, waiting for her beside it, she peers farther than the eye can see to transport herself to Fairyland.

But this is a Fairyland unlike any she has ever heard of. Here nothing is ever as it seems as the fey creatures of mythology vie with the cosy little fairies she's read about in children's stories. Joanna must tread a complex and hazardous path to find her way back to her own present. If she succeeds, perhaps the mysteries of her own strange life will be answered.

Filled with constant astonishments, The Far-Enough Window - by Hugo- and World Fantasy Award-winning writer John Grant - is a work of great beauty that also offers a thrilling adventure, challenging the mind at every ingenious twist and turn. It is a book for anyone who can remember burrowing down under the bedclothes with a flashlight so their parents wouldn't know they were still reading.

Superbly illustrated by renowned artist Ron Tiner, who also provides the cover art.

4 out of 5 stars Return to fantasy.......2003-10-16

When it comes down to fantasy, John Grant is the leading man. As co-author of the "Encyclopedia of Fantasy" he knows what goes on inside the minds of storytellers. And in "The Far-Enough Window", proves he's a great storyteller himself by letting recognizable characters alert the reader about the fantasy world being in grave danger of disappearing. It's a wonderful attempt to rescue that world from extinction, by giving the reader a new tale to loose his heart to. And in my view, it's more than an attempt: it's a success.

A young girl discovers a gateway to another world, a fantasy world with all kinds of creatures that usually only inhabit fairy tales. She goes on a quest to discover her own identity in a story filled with humour, adventure and the secrets of friendship.

Grant knows how to create a believable world where nothing is what it seems. He interrupts the straight story with visions and hallucinations so vivid the reader almost experiences them himself.

Joanna, the main character, is more than a heroine. She is the child in all of us, discovering that her small life can hold so much more, if only she dares to cross the boundaries that is her safe home. Indeed, she shows us how to see far enough, how to envision all the wonders that are waiting for us.

              4 out of 5 stars A new old fantasy.......2003-04-16

A very good book with a lot of fun. It's a little slow at the start, but once things get moving, it become worth the wait. In fact, this was a book in which its ending justified its beginning. It's a fantasy story which reminds us that all fantasy stories do not have to be about Tolkien and such. Every review I see of this book likens it to Alice, Dorothy, and friends. While this book does touch on that type of fantasy, it also contains a contemporary view which gives it a flavor all its own -- a new old fantasy. Pick it up, read it. You won't soon forget it.

5 out of 5 stars For Lovers of Fairy Tales Everywhere.......2002-10-14

The line on the cover of this book says "A Fairy Tale for Grownups of All Ages" and that could hardly be a better description of this charming, highly imaginative novel. I read it almost in a single sitting and the whole time I was doing so I had this lovely feeling that I was a child again curled up in bed with one of my favorite stories - Lewis Carroll, perhaps, or George MacDonald, or even L. Frank Baum. Lovely illustrations too. Thank you, thank you, thank you, John Grant, for having magically transported me back into that wonderful world! I would recommend this book to anybody, from children to grandparents.
