Undelivered Early Promise.......2003-11-25
From the beginning scene, we have a potential client (but not a love interest because we're told she's not particularly attractive) tell the main character (Tom McInnes) that she's "been told he's smarter than God." Without commenting on the latter's relative smartness, I can tell you that Tom falls considerably short of divine intelligence.
The main character is really the early villain who it appears is being prepped for future installments. I didn't find him sufficiently developed.
Tom seems to stumble towards a final resolution with regular discussions of his attraction to violence. The reason for the original crime is pretty much ignored although quite obvious and then dealt with at the end in a somewhat off-handed fashion.
The characters were fun but they seemed like part of a formula. The main character is a smart lawyer who breaks the rules. Sancho Panza is a 6'6" PI with an ex-stripper girlfriend. The love interest finds the men's behavior and speech Neanderthalic. Where have I seen variations of these characters before?
Starts out well but just stumbles along to a tidy but less than stunning conclusion.
Cotton candy.
Stewart scores another hit!!.......2002-05-03
Overall - GREAT book!! Highly recommended!
A Sparkler.......2002-04-29
What begins as a suspicion of highly imaginative jury tampering expands to include Mobile's judiciary, a blue ribbon law firm, and law enforcement. None of the characters are quite centered. There is not always a clear line between the good guys and the bad. We get answers that open new questions and drive this highly charged story from climax to climax.
Tom McInnes is a likeable protagonist, but contradictory enough to keep engaging us. It helps to keep in mind Tom is a member in sometimes not-so-good standing of an Alabama time honored and influential family. His daddy is a man to be reckoned with and is an important, if unseen, part of Tom's makeup. I liked the reality of Tom being a reluctant lover. In spite of psychologist Kai-Li Cantil's awesome perfections, Tom is understandably gun shy from a recent bruising romance. When plot considerations dictate Kai-Li's hiding out in his house for protection, Tom is faintly irritated at too much togetherness.
Mike Stewart brings to mind James Lee Burke's power of describing lush southern scenery. The tempers and moods of Mobile Bay are part and parcel of this fascinating yarn. "Clean Kill" is an excellent offbeat thriller sure to win Mr. Stewart many new fans.
4 1/2 stars.......2002-04-05
This time around McInnes gets hired by Sheri Baneberry. Sheri's mother was serving on a jury when she mysteriously died of what seemed to be salmonella poisoning. What Sheri wants to find out is whose fault it was. As McInnes and his partner, Joey, start researching the mother's death bad things start happening. Tom's life is now in danger. He gets blackmailed for murder and he also becomes disbarred. As he gets closer to the truth, death gets closer to him. With the help of an Asian-American doctor (psychology) who soon becomes a close female companion, and Joey, his trusting investigator, Tom works his magic and soon discovers the truth.
Stewart's way with words makes this novel one heck of a good read. A strong descriptive narrative invites one to visit Mobile, Alabama even in the dead of winter. A well plotted, fast moving story that I really enjoyed.
Highly Recommended.

Book Description
Frank Quintana was born into a niche between two societies and accepted by neither. His father was Hispanic, his mother Anglo, and in a socially divided town like Halliburton, he would be forever relegated to cutting grass and doing menial jobs. Then he discovered a way out: excel at football, win a scholarship, become quarterback for a professional team. Along the way, he would marry the girl of his dreams, Gina Westcott. Together, they would escape the social quagmire that enveloped Halliburton. From his hospital bed, he told his mother, "It's an evil thing, to destroy a young man's dreams."
She said, "Frank, there are things more important than football." He said, "Mom, there's nothing more important than football."
Judge Wilson D. Westcott destroyed Quitana's chance of achieving his dream when he sent three thugs to break Quintana's knees, to spirit off Gina Westcott to a private school up east. His mistake was that he ignited Quintana's fierce desire to seek retribution.
The murder of the Judge's son, Thomas, set into motion the forces that would destroy either the Judge or Quintana. Only one could survive.

Messy Deaths!.......2003-07-22
Judge Westcott is the power broker in Halliburton, Texas. He is the rich, white power in this Southeastern Texas County and always has been. Twelve years ago he sent some goons to kill Frank Quintana when he tried to elope with Westcotttýs daughter, Gina. But good goon help is so hard to find and instead of killing him as had been planned, all they managed to do was ruin Quintanaýs knees so that he could never play football, much less be the idolized star Quarterback ever again. While Quintana lay in the hospital recovering and fuming, Westcott had his daughter shipped off east making sure that they would never see each other again.
Quintana recovered and after a stint in the Military Police, he came home to Halliburton with justice (revenge) on his mind. He won election to the Sheriffýs office beating out Burleson T. Norris, the crooked incumbent Sheriff. Then he started trying to find a way to bring down Judge Westcott. Unfortunately with the next election just weeks away, Quintana hasnýt made any progress in his goal and Westcott is doing everything possible, legal and otherwise, to make very sure Norris wins the election.
But a murder has a tendency to make everyone change priorities.
ýThe glassy eyes of Thomas Westcott, president of the Halliburton National Bank stared at Quintana. An ornate ice pick with a handle of chrome and smokey plastic protruded from the top of Westcottýs head like a gear-shift on some fancy sports car.ý
Between the fact that he was the bank president as well as the fact that he was the son of Judge Westcott, Quintana knows that in addition to a murder he has a real political mess on his hands. There is also the problem that the body has been dumped behind a bar in the Hispanic side of this very racially segregated town and there are virtually no clues. As he begins his investigation, Quintana knows the potential suspect list is long and that Norris will provide running commentary to the media as to how Quintana is mishandling the investigation.
At the same time, one of the goons responsible for ending his playing days, Frank Cousins is about to be released from Huntsville after serving a robbery sentence. Then Gina shows up in town, ostensibly because her brother is dead, but she does not spend much time grieving. Instead, she wants to pick up right where they left off as if the past twelve years and lack of contact do not matter. Then, Quintana gets a politically sensitive as well as problematic missing womanýs case dumped into his life. And if that isnýt enough, Quintana has another love interest that he is conflicted about, a large dog named Bozo that likes to eat cats, and a murderer who seems to like to kill as the bodies start piling up.
With all those elements and a few others not mentioned, this should have been a good read. Unfortunately, that was not the case as the main problem with this novel, is reader boredom. These characters never come alive and for the most part seem to be based on old westerns to the extreme. In particular, Judge Westcott is racist and sexist beyond all rationale belief all the way to the bitter end. He is so far over the top it is impossible for the reader to suspend his or her disbelief and accept the character as written.
Then you have the half Hispanic, half White Quintana. Supposedly he is not comfortable in either the White manýs world or the Hispanic manýs world. He certainly says it a lot and thinks it a lot, but the issue never really comes alive for the reader. The same is true for his love life. The reader is supposed to feel his inner conflict and tormented need for both of the women in his life (for different reasons) and thanks to patches of stilted and unreal dialogue, never makes the connection.
However, despite its limitations, the author does show promise in his work. The mysteries involved in this novel are complex and the scenes depicting actual action did come alive for the reader. Some of the characters, the less obviously stereotypical ones seem to have potential. This novel appears to be the first in what could be an interesting series. If it is a first novel, the limitations described are understandable and to be expected and with some careful editing assistance, the author could deliver an interesting and enjoyable series.

Under the guidance of Robin Goodfellow, waiting for her beside it, she peers farther than the eye can see to transport herself to Fairyland.

Return to fantasy.......2003-10-16
A young girl discovers a gateway to another world, a fantasy world with all kinds of creatures that usually only inhabit fairy tales. She goes on a quest to discover her own identity in a story filled with humour, adventure and the secrets of friendship.
Grant knows how to create a believable world where nothing is what it seems. He interrupts the straight story with visions and hallucinations so vivid the reader almost experiences them himself.
Joanna, the main character, is more than a heroine. She is the child in all of us, discovering that her small life can hold so much more, if only she dares to cross the boundaries that is her safe home. Indeed, she shows us how to see far enough, how to envision all the wonders that are waiting for us.
A new old fantasy.......2003-04-16
