Book Description

Key West is a smuggler's paradise. All that's needed are the captains to run the contraband and Breeze Albury is one of the best fishing captains on the Rock.  He's in no mood to become the Machine's delivery boy, however. So the Machine sets out to persuade him. It starts by taking away Albury's livelihood and his freedom. But when the Machine threatens Albury's son, the washed-out wharf rat turns into a raging, sea-going vigilante.

5 out of 5 stars FLA.t Broke!.......2007-05-16

Trap Line, like Powder Burn also written by Carl Hiaasen and Bill Montalbano, gives the reader a glimpse into lives hooked either by chance or choice into 'The Machine' running drugs between Colombia and the USA via the waterways of Florida. Trap Line has a colorful cast of characters you 'know' must surely exist somewhere in this world, so why not Florida. Friends and foes, those innocent and those guilty all combine to make Trap Line a good read.
Breeze Aubury knows the rules of the drug running trade only too well, having once been caught and imprisoned for pot smuggling while trying to earn desperately needed money to help his sick daughter. The years since her death have left Breeze Albury's life and that of Peg, his ex wife, now remarried and living in a drug and drink world, in shambles. Ricky, their son is the only thread that connects them.
Ricky Albury's a good kid with a pitching arm that holds the promise of greatness in baseball. His talent is a pure gift, one that Breeze Albury sees as his son's only way off the Rock. Baseball is the chance for Ricky to avoid repeating Breeze's life of scrambling to make a living as a fisherman. That's why Ricky works at Burger King and not on the boat with his father.
Breeze is an honest man, older, wiser but still not safe from his past.'The Machine' traps Aubury into smuggling illegals by cutting all 300 plus of his trap lines. Now, beyond broke, he once again becomes a pawn in the drug game of the Machine. No friendly game here, evil has chartered Captain Albury's boat, the Diamond Cutter, and set the course for treachery. Put your life jacket on, this boat ride's a thriller. ~ Mrs. B.

4 out of 5 stars Hardcore Vintage Hiaasen.......2006-03-11

Breeze Albury was basically an honest man until the machinations of the Machine (the Cubans) and a group of Colombians toss him into a high stakes game. When nearly all his trap lines are cut while his bills mount, Breeze takes a side job delivering a load of pot. He smells a set-up just a little too late, and finds himself in an even deeper mess. When the Machine plots with the Colombians to do away with him, Breeze, his girlfriend Laurie, and a number of fed-up Key West residents devise a plan for revenge, which gets all the more serious when they mess with Breeze's pride and joy, his son Ricky.

Hiaasen fans looking for his trademark humor should know he hadn't begun exploring that facet of his talent yet. Otherwise, this book is thick with his special flavor, peppered with wonderful characters who would have been at home in any Hiaasen novel.

Breeze is a middle-aged, slightly shopworn fisherman whose one remaining ambition in life is to see his son pitch in the majors. Like nearly everyone else in this book, he lives in a trailer. His ex-wife is a drunk who sells seashells to tourists, and his current live-in girlfriend Laurie is a waitress at a local restaurant. They're being investigated by Christine Manning, governor's counsel conducting an investigation into smuggling and corruption in the Keys. She's also onto Chief of Police, Huge Barnett, and Winnebago Tom, who moves all manner of controlled substances in his vehicles. The numerous other small characters are equally well-drawn, their personalities what we've come to expect from Hiaasen.

While some seem disappointed his trademark humor is not in evidence, they seem to be missing the point. This is a well-crafted thriller with wonderful characters written by a couple of obviously talented guys. I'm glad it's part of my Hiaasen collection.

2 out of 5 stars Not in Line with the Quality of other Hiaasen Novels.......2005-03-05

This 1982 re release is no where near the same masterpiece quality of Hiaasen's later work or even written in the same style. In fact I'd hazard a guess as to say the other author Bill Montalbano wrote most of this and now that Hiaasen has become a household name the publishers are trying to cash in by putting Hiaasen's name at the top of the cover of thie rerelease. The book is set in Florida, that is pretty much the only similarity I can see to the great Hiaasen novels such as Strip Tease, Double Whammy, Skinny Dip, Sick Puppy and Lucky You. There's no surreal humorous likeable (or unlikeable) characters in here, no three or more separate storylines converging and crossing over each other, just no real fast paced enjoyment that we have to expect from Hiaasen.

Don't waste your money. Buy one of the masterpiece Hiaasen novels instead.

5 out of 5 stars Trap Line.......2002-08-26

If you want to recall past days and exploits in Key West in the 70's or just read a good paced novel with insight into how it used to be before the t-shirts and buffet wanna-be's got there; try Trap Line...Carl got around in his younger days. Glad I stumbled over this old book. Now well see how Powder Burn goes.

4 out of 5 stars Fishermen and Drug Lords in Key West.......2001-04-28

Breeze Albury is one of Key West's best fishing captains. His skill gets the attention of the drug lords that funnel a torrent of drugs into America through the Keys. Breeze refuses to work for them, so they steal his ..... But when they harm his son, Breeze goes wild and leads fishermen and townspeople in an all-out war against the drug machine and its dirty police chief. It's an entertaining story with a big helping of Key West flavor and atmosphere.

1 out of 5 stars Read this review!! And skip this book to read the Crane........2006-03-15

The novel happens at the wrong place, at the wrong time. Many crucial events happened in the background. The novel instead focus on our 2 characters that do absolutely nothing, but hear of important news that happened. And where is Utaku Kamoko in all this? Why not her, instead of this Tetsuko 'nobody'? Too much detail descriptions, missing the point of many scenes entirely. I used this book instead of sleeping pill. This author did not do any research on Japanese culture. I read it and I think 'Faerun' instead of 'Rokugan'! You can easily cut away 3/4 of the book and still know all the story. The end of the novel, the victory feels unfullfilled, the plots feel unresolved.

WARNING! If you're gonna read this book, then don't read ahead. I'm offering a shortcut for people who want to skip this book but wanna know what happened. The following is a summary:

After the Scorpion Coup, a plague hit Rokugan, heavily on Crane. The Scorpion are laying low. Empress Kachiko poisoned Emperor, keeping him alive but make it look like he's got the plague. She takes the throne and denied Doji Hoturi of request to aid his Clan from Lion and Crab attacks. Hotori acts strange and is seen leading Shadowlands army attacking small villages. In court, Bayushi Aramoro tried to assassinate the disturbed Ide Tadaji, but failed. Tadaji fled the imperial palace. In the end, the recurring vision of his dead son makes him lose all his sanity. Crane is weak, Lion and Crab want to finish off the Crane. Crab army lead by Hida Tsukune hold the Beiden pass. Dragon (lead by Ronin Toturi), Phoenix, Unicorn (lead by Yasamura) aid the Crane fighting the Crab, and taking back the baiden pass. Utaku Kamoko is there leading the Battle Maidens too. The Crab is losing and reenforced by Kuni Yori's shadowlands army. With Hida Kisada's permission Yori killed the failure Tsukune, and fight the alliance. During the battle, Utaku Tetsuko saw Hotori killing his own Crane samurai and commanding the goblins. In the end the Crab/Shadowlands lost and retreat. Tetsuko survived but heartbroken because her special friend Jikkyo is killed by Hoturi. She didn't realize she loved Jikkyo until he's dead. Plus in the past, she also lost a lover to Battle, his name is Tamura (Ide Tadaji's only son who died before this novel began). Whether or not Tamura's ghost that haunted Tadaji to insanity is real or shadowlands influenced is still a mystery.

5 out of 5 stars Gregest Series Written from L5R.......2005-10-08

The series caught me from the first page. It takes you into japanese, Chinese, and Korean Lore. Of a time where samurai, magic, demons, grand schemes, and grand battles take place. You get the feeling like your there with the characters and you feel what they feel, and see what they see.

                    2 out of 5 stars A Unicorn with Half a Horn.......2005-02-05

I would like to give The Unicorn a higher rating because there is a very good short story going on within this messy novel. The tale of Ide Tadaji, Unicorn diplomat and courtier, is a very well crafted political drama holding some of the best moments of the entire Clan War series.

Unfortunately, there's this dishwater dull "Battle Maiden" who takes up the rest of the book with her run-of-the-mill coming of age story. By the end of the book you care even less about her than you did at the beginning and you're left wondering if the rest of series is going to slide into disasterous territory. Tadaji's political maneuverings and repartee with Kachiko are thankfully there to keep you engaged for the sake of the series if nothing else.

The biggest disappointment with The Unicorn, however, is that you never feel that you understand the clan's purpose or place in the overall scheme of things. With such wonderful secrets and an amazing cultural history the Unicorn clan contains ample material for a very engaging novel. The shame is that you won't find any of it here.

2 out of 5 stars Read something else! Dont waste your time!.......2004-01-02

This book was a big disapointment for me, the kid I burrowed it from said it was good, but I could not stand it. The characters dont seem real at all, I'm really into all the Samurai, Middle Age stuff and fantasy books but this one just didn't interest me. The characters don't seem real and their dull. I personnally don't like books that are slow getting of, but these L5R get off to fast, by pg. 100 there ready to hack each others heads off. My advice (consitering I have read them all)is go read something worth your time, like The Wheel of Time, the Runelords, Shannara, or find something else, anything.

Helaine wants to travel back to her home world of Ordin. Score, Pixel, and their unicorn friends, Flame and Smoke decide to go with her. Ordin is a medieval world and they arrive to find her father's castle surrounded by armies preparing to lay siege to it. When they arrive Smoke saves a young magic user named Jenna from being stoned for being a witch. He brings her to the group. There is instant friction between Helaine and Jenna, because Helaine is a nobel and Jenna is a peasent. The story has great excitement and tension as the team tries to save Helaine's family, but they have to figure out why they should.

The book reads like a rough draft that the author meant to fix but never did. The other six book had a sense of newness and wonder in them that this one didn't have. Stuff were dumbed down (i.e. unicorn horn only negates magic up to a point) and events happening in the last half seemed rushed and underdeveloped. The ending is particularly offensive in its simpleminded resolution.

Worst of all are the three characters: they just didn't GROW at all in this book. John Peel basically took their main character traits and he magnified them to the EXTREME: Pixel is now a lovesick teen, Heleine is uber Xena Princess and every word that comes out of Score's mouth is a wisecrack (I swear that half the book is just him making lame jokes, I don't remember the character being this annoying).

The whole thing just didn't flow right, including the writing style, which is inconsistent. Medieval characters started out speaking in old style speech one moment and suddenly saying "okay" in another, which is distracting.

It's a shame, cause the idea behind the book had so much potential. I'll be checking out the rest of the book in the series just to see what happens, but this one is a huge disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars Waited a long time, and glad of it........2005-06-27

Honestly? I adored this book. I read it when I was what, 9? Now I'm 17 and it still had me grinning from ear to ear, including on the very last page. Peel doesn't write in that annoying Dick and Jane style, and so even though it's a kids book it's enjoyable for everyone.

The three voyage to Helaine's home, where her father is under attack. Even though the welcome is not warm, the trio decide to help. Pixel goes on a quest with the peasent girl Jenna they discover, who was almost stoned as a witch and appears quite as powerful as the others. Score and Helaine head in another direction as Helaine strives to please her father.

There was also romance in a completely non-cheesy way that I loved. Pixel and Jenna immediately hit in off, and there were plenty of Score/Helaine moments, which kept me grinning. It zipped by, and I cannot wait for the Book of Oceans to be out. Read this. If the style changed a bit, it's because the author changed, and as most of the original readers are probably about my age, I bet you'll still love it.

2 out of 5 stars What did seven years do?.......2005-06-16

The Diadem series captivated me a couple years ago and I couldn't wait for Mr. Peel to finish the series. When I found out the 7th book was coming out, I was giddy with joy. I thought it'd be brilliant. Sadly, I was mistaken. The Book of War just didn't captivate the style and small details of the previous books. Some were small things like when Helaine said, "Danger" instead of the usual, "Trouble." The book just didn't flow as well as the others did.

The Vulgar Unicorn is the black heart of Sanctuary's corruption. When something bad goes down in Thieves' World, it always seems to start in this rundown dive. In this gripping adventure, what seems like just another murder leads to the unmasking of a terrible conspiracy involving Dyareelan cultists, Nisibisi refugees, and a dangerous plague that could destroy the city. Murder at the Vulgar Unicorn is the perfect starting point for a Thieves' World Campaign. In addition to the adventure proper, the book also provides full details and maps of the most infamous bar in Sanctuary: the Vulgar Unicorn itself.

                        Book Description

A tale of the transformative power of stories, told by British Children's Laureate Michael Morpurgo and award-winning illustrator Gary Blythe

Eight-year-old Tomas hates reading. He would much rather be clambering around his beloved mountains. But when his mother forces him to visit the library, he can't help but listen to the enchanting tales the librarian spins as she sits on a lifelike wooden unicorn. When war comes to their village, it is Tomas's newfound love of books that helps save the library's holdings from destruction. Set against a backdrop of encroaching war, I BELIEVE IN UNICORNS is an eloquent reminder of the power of storytelling to alter our lives.

The 12th Article encapsulates the best and worst of the human experience. After a warring nation is challenged by their suffering children to be more understanding, the entire country goes through a dramatic shift in consciousness that gives birth to an army of peacekeepers, the greatest the world has ever known. With them they bring a revolutionary education system that propels one teacher into the ranks of Buddha or Jesus. When Professor Jewels becomes King of Gopal, he must draw on all his life experiences when he finds himself having to reveal to his youngest son, Pachem, a prophecy from Gopal's past that will pit one brother against another while testing the faith of every Gopalian and the very essence of their extraordinary way of life. In this dramatic and inspiring adventure, the integration of the spiritual and the physical is woven into the spoils of war, which will either leave one brother with the greatest of all powers, or another with the greatest of all gifts. This mystical story illuminates the power of love and the profound relationship between choice and destiny.

It's hard to be brave. Lenny has been trying ever since his father went off to fight in World War II, leaving him with a medallion depicting a fighting unicorn and lion. When bombs start to drop all around his house in London, his mother puts him on a train to the country for safety. There, mean children make fun of him and, well, being brave seems almost impossible. Thankfully, Lenny discovers a safe haven, a walled garden with a lonely looking stone unicorn, and he retreats there often. When he meets a quiet one-legged young man in the garden one day, Lenny slowly begins to learn the deeper meaning of courage. Once again, Shirley Hughes displays an unwavering sense of character, and beautifully colored, soft illustrations place the narrative in its physical and emotional context. Her sensitivity to the nuances of feelings in young people makes her stories profoundly appealing and satisfying. In this story of fear and loneliness, she brings the experiences of a time gone by into the present with clarity, wisdom, and elegance. (Ages 8 to 12) --Emilie Coulter

                                Book Description

A handsome, thoughtful book by a stellar author and illustrator.

When Lenny Levi's father goes off to fight in the Second World War, his son has to learn to be brave: brave when bombs are dropped on his street in London, brave when he's evacuated to a big house in the country, and brave when spiteful children tease him and call him names. This beautiful book will strike a chord with anyone who has ever felt homesick and alone. Full of detail and character, it embraces the past and the preset with unique poignancy and power.

4 out of 5 stars Poignant and Heartbreaking.......2003-03-06

Shirley Hughes is best known for her famous 'Alfie' books in which she takes ordinary urban life, and through her warm prose and beautiful illustrations, changes it into something magical. In 'The Lion and the Unicorn' she goes in a slightly different direction, making a slightly older boy her protagonist, setting it against a backdrop of World War Two, and having her narrative flow along to heighten all of Lenny's experiences of fear and anxiety in the war rather than pinpoint one particular event or circumstance. Although the book is not specific about how much time it emcompasses, one could easily imagine that it takes place over several years.

Lenny is a young boy living in war-time London, where the nights are regularly filled with the sounds of bombs and airplanes. His father is already at the war, sending him letters filled with pictures (one in particular has a pencil-drawn unicorn) and leaving him as the keeper of a medallion with a fighting lion and unicorn upon it. When a home nearby is destroyed, Lenny's mother takes him to the train station to be evacuted, leading to a confused and heartbreaking separation. Lenny is taken to a large old house in the country (and Hughes's illustrations magnifiently capture its grandeur and beauty by day and its gloominess and vastness by night) where he is faced with sleeping by himself in a strange room, being bullied by children at school because of his bedwetting, and his refusal to eat bacon/pork as served by the head maid.

From here things move both up and down. His bed wetting (with help from a kindly young maid) improves, only to get worse when letters from his mother stop coming. The taunts at school intensify, and the other girls at the house are malicious. Only one thing seems to give him any comfit - the discovery of a walled garden (and here Hughes's love of the Secret Garden [she has illustrated an edition], shines through) with the graceful statue of a unicorn inside. There he also meets a strange and quiet one-legged man who speaks to him about the deeper meanings of courage, and how one is able to grasp it.

The two images of the lion and the unicorn are prevailent throughout the book, in a way they symbolise the battle between fear and bravery, but also the two *types* of bravery: the lion as the raging courage soldiers must have as they go into battle, the unicorn as the more passive, quiet courage that Lenny is desparately trying to achieve.

Shirley Hughes once more delievers a beautiful and poignant book (though many may not be used to anything but her Alfie collection) that captures the intensity and real fear that children possess, and the difficult circumstances in which courage was won. Younger children may be a little confused at the winding pace and style of the story (they expect a clear-cut beginning, middle and ending resolution), but Hughes's illustrations successfully bring the life and times of the second World War to today, nostalgically and relevently.

Mustangs & Unicorns was a delightful read for this amuture history buff. The detail of the 359th FG and the FS's 368,369,&370 is very detailed. I am proud to know a member of the 369th FS Capt:John Oliphint. The WW2 pilots are fast going on to another place. Remember the freedom they fought for and ours today because of them and so many others. All gave some, and some gave all. Freedom isn't free. John Oliphint told this to me. Keep the memories alive. This read isn't fiction it's the real thing. JL.

This book is a fascinating look at the history of the 359th Fighter Group. It contains many pictures and a detailed account of the results of all their combat missions. This is a great book for the WWII Aviation enthusiast, with an emphasis on the P-51 Mustang and P-47 Thunderbolts they flew.
