Book Description
A bit of adventure and quick cash is all that good-natured drifter Anthony Cade is looking for when he accepts a messenger job from an old friend. It sounds so simple: deliver the provocative memoirs of a recently deceased European count to a London publisher. But the parcel holds ore than scandalous royal secrets. It contains a stash of letters that suggest blackmail--and lead to the murder of a stranger who's been shadowing Anthony's every move. Discovering the dead man's identity means retracing his steps--to the rambling estate of Chimneys where darker secrets, and deadlier threats, await anyone who dares to enter.
Customer Reviews:
I found this a bit tiresome.......2007-02-04
This is one of the older Agatha's and feels a bit dated. One of the only ones I didn't read twice. For real fans worth a read.
My all-time favorite Agatha Christie.......2006-12-29
I have read every Agatha Christie novel and short story multiple times, and there are many that I love, but The Secret of Chimneys is my absolute favorite. The characters are fun, the plot is interesting, and there are passages that never fail to amuse me. I admit I've read this book so many times that I can point out little slip-ups, but I couldn't care less. The Secret of Chimneys is Agatha Christie's third novel, and I find that I enjoy her earlier novels most, as some of the later ones are darker and can ramble. Fun is generally not a word I associate with murder mysteries, but it applies to this book: intrigue, romance, humor and a few murders are a fabulous combination.
Entertaining but a bit berserk.......2006-10-21
With its Ruritanian intrigue and bright young things, The Secret of Chimneys has more in common with the thriller-comedy-mysteries popular in the 1920's than with Christie's usual puzzlers. Although she is sometimes referred to as a writer of "country house mysteries", this is one of her few books that actually takes place in a country house -- meaning a stately home rather than, you know, just a house in the country.
Christie handles this style well, but she does go a bit overboard. It's a bit like the 12 days of Christmas -- there are at least five people who aren't who they claim to be, four prowlers at midnight, three McGuffins, two sinister servants, and yes, a pistol in a beech tree.
You probably won't have much trouble figuring out whodunnit and so forth, but that's not really the point here. It's a fun period piece that won't take you long to get through: I enjoyed reading it in the bathtub, but I'm not sure how well it would fare on dry land.
Concerning the AudioBook CD Edition.......2005-09-11
This comment specifically concerns the AudioBook CD edition read by Hugh Fraser. As an avid audiobook listener, I would like to post a comment about this edition:
Fraser is not the most versatile voice-doer I've listened to, and that can be distracting at times. There is little change in pause length between sentence and paragraphs. Also, until you get used to the subtle difference in tones and voices, it is very hard to follow in dialogue who's saying what (especially when there are more than two characters conversing), and very easy for your mind to wander off, victim to the monotonous reading style. Overall, I give the reading effort 3 out of 5 stars.
Whether you should purchase this or not is up to you, but at least you've been cautioned. I recently heard The Body in the Library, read by Stephanie Cole, and the quality of the reading was excellent. Happy listening!
the Secret of Chimneys.......2005-08-28
While I wouldn't count this my favorite Agatha Christie book, it was very well done. The mystery was clever, I enjoyed the characters and the story very much, and it was brought to a close in a very satisfying way.
Christie has this amazing talent of making a cool mystery while also having a great setting with believable characters; this is just as evident in the Secret of Chimneys.
These Agatha Christie mysteries are also recommended:
And Then There Were None, Death on the Nile, Murder on the Orient Express, Appointment With Death, and Taken at the Flood.

Potent Reading on Magickal Scents from a Little Book by Scott Cunningham .......2007-09-08
At first,i thought this book would 'stink'.There is nothing malodorous about this good small book.Cunningham has a way of writing that is cosy and informative.I read this at two sittings, over the weekend. He provides many historical examples throughout the book. There's an excellent glossary and extensive appendixes for further reading on the aromatherapy topic. And the crux and heart of the book,is the one hundred plus pages of the magickal powers and uses of the aromas. My only beef with the book,is that it has no colorful pictures provided or product pictures shown. So,you would have to investigate further at your metaphysical shoppe, before you start wildly buying the various herbs, oils, and spices. For beginning new-agers around, this magickal aroma book is an excellent starting point on your quest towards healthier living .
spouse.......2007-06-27
I just started reading. seems like the the book and I will get along.
Very Aromatic.......2006-03-02
Love this one also, hard to find book that really breaks everything down to the smallest degree to get info across, like all his other info books, very informative, also lets you know some things are toxic and should not be tampered with and how others are irritants.
Magical aroma.......2005-10-03
Cunningham delves back into his well know research and experience to produce a compendium useful in blending scent and magick. Thorough descriptions of the magical and natural properties of available essential oils, what is most likely to be natural and chemically made or altered, "Magical Aromatherapy" offers the magickal practitioner, student or novice a look into the fascinating world of aromatherapy.
Very very good book.......2005-04-02
This author is unbelievable. You should definitely get this book if you are interested in aromatherapy. He knows everything. This book is very informative. So useful!!!!

Your imagination is your only limit.......2007-06-29
I purchased this and Scott Cunninghams Incense Oils and Brews. Although I am a great fan of Scott Cunningham, this books has some of the best selections, directions, and recipes for making your own incense. He gives you the energy of the magic and the measurements for making fool-proof incense. What I particularly liked about this book is that the herbs, woods, resins, and binders are readily available on the internet and resources are given in the back of the book. I also liked the sincerity of his concerns for the plant itself (killing vs. non-killing). It appears this book was written with great love.
Way Beyond the Basics.......2007-05-01
Carl Neal has written a book that goes way beyond the basics most magickal people are familiar with when making incense for specific spells or rituals. As someone who has been making incenses for 20 years, I learned more from a workshop of Carl's than I have from any other book or teacher. I cannot wait for a sequel!
GREAT BOOK.......2006-10-08
What a great boo!!! He knows his stuff, easy to read and easier to do. Everything you need to know about making your own incense is in this book. A must have for any Pagan book collection.

more more more!!.......2006-10-03
I own this book, and another by same author, "The magikal tool box" as well. And all I can say is,
that with at least 9 other incense/scents books on my shelves, not including over 200 herbal, pagan, kitchen, hedge and green witch books,is this....
If I had to loose all of my books tomorrow, but one to save,it would be either this book or 'M toolbox'....and I would literally have to toss a coin between those two from there.
This is by far the best and easiest book on the market about incense and scents and the making of it(plus other tidbits). You feel as if you have your teacher right in the kitchen with you, or walking with you around the shops and sorting ingredients, chattering about it all the way.
We could say we would love a video to go with it...we all love DIY videos, but for this book there is no need for one. ITS THAT COMPLETE!
The author goes into detail enough so that you feel by the time you finish the book that you want to run in the kitchen and start working, oops I meant "Playing" NOW!
And it isnt overwhelming, or using terminolgy that makes you want to put the book down and grab the theasaurus or dictionary....so very easy that I even think that my daughters teacher (my daughter is 8) is going to get one of these for an early xmas gift; It would be great for her for gift ideas for her kids projects....yes it really IS that simple.
And after reading 'Magikal Toolbox' all I can say now is WHATS NEXT, and MORE PLEASE!
And with so many books of these genre's out there, its getting difficult to sort the good from the rubbish unless you already have experience and know the difference while choosing a book; Now its simple...stay with Carl Neal and you wont go wrong.
And even the most experienced in my group still continue to buy his books, these are keepers, unless you can afford to pass on, and you will want to share these, trust me...But you will also want to keep this book on your best of best book shelf.
I am also reading online about his workshops..and hope to reach one soon!
Keep up the great work!
regards
Robin Budd
Overall, a very good book about incense.......2005-10-08
This book gives very good advice about making incense at home. I like the fact that the author discourages the use of salt petre and blank cones and sticks for oil dipping. There is a troubleshoot guide in the question/answer format that is helpful. Without a doubt, the author has a passion for making incense.
There is a part in the book that lists suppliers. It is a little confusing because it says Internet sources, but it lists the mailing addresses and phone numbers without the Internet addresses.
Overall, the book is a good starting point, but leaves out information that would classify it as a "comprehensive guide" to making incense. The author encourages experimentation rather than completely engaging in instruction. I guess I am trying to say it could have gone further into some topics, but I am glad I bought the book and recommend it to anyone interested in learning to make their own incense.

Are you among the many whose first fantasy book was an Andre Norton young adult novel? Scent of Magic is the latest in a long line of good old-fashioned Norton sword-and-sorcery tales. As always, Norton provides an intriguing premise: in this world, both good and evil magic are tied to plants and their scents.
The orphan Willadene has "the ability to recognize and name the most subtle of mixed scents," including the taint of evil. After she saves Hawice the Herbmistress from a magical trap, Hawice brings her to the Ducal castle. There Willadene meets the Duke's sheltered daughter Mahart, who is preparing for a marriage that will give her father an heir. Willadene also works with Nicolas, who spies for the Duke. When Mahart is abducted after meeting Prince Lorien, her intended fiancé, Willadene, Nicolas, and the Prince set out to find her and track down those responsible. Mahart and Willadene prove brave and resourceful, equal partners in the final struggle.
The writing isn't always up to Norton's standards; sentences are sometimes of baroque complexity. But fans of the Witch World series and those nostalgic for fairy-tale fantasy should seek out Scent of Magic. --Nona Vero
Book Description
There is a malevolence lurking within the castle's walls, inspiring brazen treacheries and usurpations...and a foul abduction as unthinkable as it is unexpected. Something horribly strange and forbidden has struck at the dawn of a new day of corruption and terror. And a young girl finds the heightened sense that has been her fortune now drawing her inextricably down into a maelstrom of evil. Now a great quest is in Willadene's future: a journey to a place of darkness; of tainted covenants and ancient battles of blood and sacrifice when monsters warred with heroes. For the extraordinary power that has molded her destiny is propelling her toward shocking self-knowledge and an impossible rescue in a realm of shadows, secrets, and devastated hope where the invincible lord of abominations reigns.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2005-01-21
I really tried to enjoy this book, since I've liked other books by Andre Norton, but this one just doesn't have much of a plot. The two main characters are both strong, interesting women. The descriptions are vivid and detailed (too much so, in fact, bogging the book down). The book revolves around an interesting situation, with a scullery maid who can actually smell evil and ward it off with herbal concoctions. But the two heroines mostly just hang around the castle, attending lunches and making feeble attempts to identify the villains, until the last couple of chapters. At that point they have a bizarre and not very believable adventure that leads to a not very interesting climax. This was a boring book.
THIS WAS EXCELLENT.......2004-03-11
I first discovered Andre Norton quite by accident two years ago when I began an avid reader of fantasy quite also by mistake. This book was excellent. She is from the time when people wrote stories to take you away to far away worlds and places that only the imagination can lead you to. Scent of Magic was a great find for me. The characters were well developed and the story line was well done. I enjoyed it.
Bad........2003-04-21
I really wanted to like this book. The problem is ,I didn't.It was just so terrible. It didn't get anywhere, the characters were impossible to understand, and it was so filled with pointless stuff,so that by the end when they faced the bad-guyes,there was virtually no room left.
God knows why I finished this book.I suppose it was because Norton is one of my all-time favorites. But she really blew off on this one,god knows why she thought we care about Mahart;or Willadene. If you actually want Norton books that are good, read Wind in the Stone,Breed to Come,or the Elvenbane. This book is a waste.
Not Norton's best ........2003-01-16
I've pretty much always liked Norton .After Black Trillium I was immediatley drawn into her work .But this is slow moving and pointless .Willadene is completely un -satisfying .If she just sensed evil why doesn't she tell Halwice or Vazul ?If you want a good example of Norton's work ,try Wind in the Stone or Black Trillium(which is also written b Marion Zimmer Bradley and Julian May ).Don't waste your time on this .
Poorly written and edited.......2002-07-13
This was my first encounter with Andre Norton's works, and unfortunately it was not a pleasant one. While the plot hints at a rich magical worldview, the book is hamstrung by poor writing and editing.
I started marking particularly atrocious examples about two-thirds of the way through, so these quotes are only from the last section of the book:
--------
"His body, toughened as well as he could exercize muscles most men did not even guess they might posses, served him well." (p333)
"Find the way down to the lower land he did." (p334)
"Again she felt the pressure of his fingers closing about her upper arm.
'How did you know that?'
She buried her nose in that untidy bundle her amulet had become.
'There was the scent of aspicen fern -- that and black evil!'" (p290)
---------
Characters are one-dimensional and do not develop over time, with little emotional attachment on the part of the reader. Dialogue is trite, and description mostly revolves around uses of the words "stench" and "evil".
No offense intended to people who enjoyed this book, or to Andre Norton (who is writing for a younger audience, maybe 11-14), but this book could have used a lot more time with an editor wielding a large red pen.
Book Description

The Doompell trilogy.......2005-04-10
The Doompell trilogy is full of the magic that Cliff McNish writes into his books, they are full of mystery and excitment from the first page. As the first book starts Rachel and Eric are normal children but as soon as they are pulled through the door of Ithrea by the witch they start to discover their inner magic. Rachel discovers her magic first, discovering her great abilty of unusual shifting and shape-changing. Eric takes longer to find out his macical power which is called the fatal gift...
'The doomspell trilogy'.......2003-10-07
The doompell trilogy is exciting, magical and full of brilliant action!
Rachel and Eric are ripped away through their celler wall and into another world. The Witch, Dragwena has taken them away, like many other children.
The Witch tests Rachel and Eric and soon finds out that Rachel is extroardinarilly gifted. Rachel can transform herself into a anything an animal a feather anything. she can fly on an owl, fly and shift.
Eric is also gifted, he cannot do the things Rachel can but he can 'delete' spells a gift no other children can do.
The Witch is planning to use these new chidren for her own dreadful purposes. But the Witches plans may not suceed.
And for the Witches slaves, Rachel is the one that can help.
This is my Second most favourite book.
I like this book because it makes you wont to keep reading it on and on, you dont wont to stop. It is full of action and it is very imaginative. It is magical and anything can happen.

Customer Reviews:
This Should Be A Movie.......2005-03-10
This is one of the most enjoyable books I have ever read. It is a story that really develops the characters, and the action just sizzles. I could not put it down-it just grabbed me and wouldn't let go. You really get inside the character's heads, and Seaborg has put some really unique twists into his story. Just when I thought I knew what was going to happen, he changes directions, but so smoothly that you can only admire the work. This would make an awesome movie!! It's not your typical fantasy novel, but has a combination of fantasy, adventure, romance, even touches of what could be considered spiritual aspects. I don't even know how to categorize it. If you enjoy good storytelling, with a plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat, this is the book for you. And the best news is that it's only the first book in the series. I've read the next two, The Price of Magic, and Journey's End, and they are even better. Hopefully, there are even more in the works. I can hardly wait to read them.
Couldn't Put it Down!.......2003-01-10
The Scent of Magic was given to me as a gift for Christmas. What I didn't realize was just how much I'd enjoy the story. The author intertwines an exciting and suspenseful plot with great, in depth character development that makes the book hard to put down. The world that is created is special, because it has many aspects of fantasy and several aspects of the real world that makes the reader relate to the story even more than a pure fantasy book. What makes this book stand out from other fantasy books I've read is the unusual twist the author adds to the magical elements. I've read several books about magic and fantasy, but the use of "scent" and politics and blending of spells is very unique to this novel. It adds and element of interest. The story's character development is great and I found myself reading late into the night, wondering whether Ponticar would find a weakness in the Charian army, whether Rolf and Elena would expres their love, whether Lothar would catch Rolf, and wondering just who is Dark anyway. The story incorporates elements from several places and they are brought together in a perfect blend to keep the reader's interest. I reccomend this book if you like to read about politics, fantasy, mystery, love, or adventure. The Scent of Magic is packed with elements many readers will love!
Great!!!.......2001-11-14
The title above describes it as best as I can.
A Magical Ride!.......2001-06-04
It's always a pleasure to discover a brand new writer who can entertain you and Seaborg definitely does that. His plot is wonderfully laid out, complex enough to be interesting without being so convoluted that it loses the reader in the process. There are a few surprises along the way and the characters are believable and engaging. Seaborg has a gift for dialog and his story moves along from scene to scene with a seamlessness that many more well-known authors would be advised to copy. I loved the way in which magic was treated in the book, not as something mystical and unreachable, but as a skill that could be developed for those with the talent for it. It was refreshing to see magicians who were real people instead of some eccentric hermit or power-mad fiend who wants to take over the world. Here they are rare enough to be respected without all the baggage so often thrown on for "effect". The story itself is a real page-turner. It's nice to read an adventure that actually has a plot to it rather than the standard "wizard wants to take over the world or save it". Here the magicians are intimately involved in the day-to-day life around them. I can hardly wait for more books by Seaborg.
Entertaining and Magical.......2001-04-16
I found tThe Scent of Magic to be filled with the kind of edge-of-your seat adventure so often missing from fantasy novels. The book grabs your attention from the first page and leaves you wanting more. Interesting characters and surprising plot twists make The Scent of Magic a thouroughly enjoyable ride. Seaborg created a land where magic is part and parcel of everyday life, from the highest levels of government to street magicians that really use magic. This is part one and I can hardly wait for the sequel later this year. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who likes fantasy novels. Anyone new to the genre could do no better than to start with The Scent of Magic.
