Book Description
They call the ancient hills of Jerusalem the butcher's theater. Here, upon this bloodstained stage, a faceless killer performs his violent specialty: The first to die brutally is a fifteen-year-old girl. She is drained of blood, then carefully bathed and shrouded in white. Precisely one week later, a second victim is found. From the sacred Wailing Wall to the monasteries where dark secrets are cloistered, from black-clad bedouin enclaves to labyrinthine midnight alleys, veteran police inspector Daniel Sharavi and his crack team plunge deep into a city simmering with religious and political passions to hunt for a murderer whos insatiable taste for young women could destroy the delicate balance on which Jerusalem's very survival depends.
A brilliant novel by a master of the genre, a vivid look at the tortured complexities of a psychopath's mind, a rich evocation of a city steeped in history -- this, and more, is The Butcher's Theater.

When I finished the last page of this book ..........2006-07-27
My first reaction was What kind of twisted mind would write such a thing? The villain in this is as evil as it gets and the things he does - just horrific. But, then ... I don't think the book is really all that graphic. Rather, I suspect it is actually my own twisted little brain that filled in all the nasty details.
I love the characters in this book. For me, reading is all about the characters - if I don't care about the them, why should I care what happens to them? This is about a murder investigation in Israel. Since this is one of the first serial killers they've ever had (The first being The Grey Man who was never caught), the investigation team is a bit inexperienced with this sort of thing.
The team includes:
- Chief Inspector Daniel Sharavi who's left hand was crippled in the Six-Day War of '67.
- Inspector Nahum Shmeltzer, the older detective ready to retire and kind of angry at the world.
- Subinspector Yossi Lee, the big huge "Chinaman."
- Sergeant Elias Daoud, the Christian Arab who just wants to do his job.
- Sergeant Avi Cohen, the spoiled rich kid with dyslexia.
Daniel, I already knew and liked from Survival of the Fittest which came after this one, but I read them out of order. After him, I liked Shmeltzer best - just something about skinny, cranky old men ...
Anyway, someone is mutilating beautiful young Arab women and leaving their washed and wrapped bodies around the area of Jerusalem known as The Butcher's Theater. Tensions are running high as Jews and Arabs play the blame game. But is it political at all? Or is it just some psychopath out for sick sexual thrills? Due to the nature of the slashings, it is suspected that a doctor may be responsible and there are no shortage of suspects.
The story is very tense and takes you all around the city of Jerusalem as we get a glimpse into the extent of cultural diversity there. I kind of suspected who the killer was early on, but wasn't sure and often doubted. The reader is privy to information not available to the investigators, though, as some chapters are told from inside the killer's head. With the help of Daniel's visiting American friend, LAPD Detective Gene Brooker, the clues slowly but surely pile up.
This is a long book. My little paperback copy is a heavy thing on 628 thin pages with small type, but never once while reading it did I think it was dragging on too long. It's a page turner with a heart-pounding climax. I HIGHLY recommend it.
Tedious.......2006-07-06
I am a fan of Jonathan Kellerman - have read all of his books and enjoyed most of them. This was the last one I read. It was too long - so many diversions that did not advance the story. It seemed that JK was caught between writing a mystery/crime novel and writing a history of the conflict between the Palestinians and Israels. This books was about 300 pages too long and very boring in many places. This was JK fourth novel and I am glad that he got his sights back on target.
Not Bad.......2006-06-06
This is the only book I have read of the author and that was at the urging of my wonderful wife. I was not disappointed but not thrilled either. I realize this was not his usual character so I gave him the benefit of the doubt. I rated it as good but actually it was between good and very good. I read the reviews that were submitted before mine and was completely amazed at the varying opionions of the reviewers. I deplore racisim in any form and I consider myself a liberal. I did not find this book to be racist as so many pointed out. Instead I just sat back and enjoyed the book. Go ahead and read it and make your own conculsion.
Please don't like this book!.......2006-06-02
I was completely repulsed by this novel which had been so highly reviewed. In the first 50 pages, it's hard to find a nationality or ethnic group not completely, arrogantly trashed (including the UN and all its agencies/commissions) except for the "original" Israelis. Granted, a lot of it comes from the characters who are incredibly shallow, ESPECIALLY the killer, but there is no balance at all. Even as an American probably less ethnic than Kellerman I felt personally insulted by the relentlessly pro-Israeli slant. Typical narrator statement "In 1967, the Arabs attacked again, again losing honor and land," or (paraphrasing) "the style reflected the British love of comfort during their reign." Why attempt a 2 page summation of what is arguably the most wildly chaotic and difficult regional history on the planet? Even if you like your characters to be 2-dimensional representations of predjudice, these characters only represent the American preconceptions of what those predjudices should be. Can one really believe that in a society that prides itself on tolerance (as the Israeli characters constantly claim that they do, either as a source of pride or dispair) a person like Shmeltzer would feel comfortable talking the way he does? That's what makes the characters so unbelievable.
And then the killer! Why have long sections "inside" the mind of the killer, when it adds nothing to your understanding? There is so much musing on the psychological nature and social roles of serial killers by Sharavi that one might expect those passages to be illuminating, but instead they seem to exist only to add purient details and "excitement" to a book that might otherwise be completely glacial in pace. If this represents Kellerman's best shot at psychoanalysis, thank GOD he writes fiction and is not in practice.
I read the whole thing trying to figure out if it was a tour-de-force exploration of American predjudice or just a sad attempt to make pulp fiction "bigger" by attaching it to "big" themes, I think it's the latter, unfortunately. If you must read, though, I recommend trying the first approach and seeing just how much predjudice is smashed in there. The final scene of the Arab detective, for example... please don't think that Arab women - Christian, Muslim, or gasp! secular - are any more likely to "timidly ask, "was your dinner acceptable?" after bearing six children for a husband who is much more present in his job than at home than you are yourself.
Oh, and how I wish 0 stars was a rating option.
Rather slow, but it grows on you..........2006-05-11
I enjoy the Alex Delaware series, and I also liked the two books featuring Petra Connors, so I thought I would try this, after encountering Sharavi in "Survival of the fittest".
This book is different from the ones taking place in LA, and it IS slow, sometime to the point of boredom. But after about a hundred pages, you want to go on reading it, despite the fact that it continues being slow. The characters are reasonably well developed, especially Sharavi. The book is atmospheric but, never having been to Israel, I cannot tell how accurately it depicted Jerusalem at the time. And the book is quite old, so probably things have changed dramatically since.
The parts featuring the killer are disturbing and seem somewhat extreme but, for all I know about serial killers, the description might even be plausible.
I did not find it as absorbing as I usually find thrillers but if one reads it more as a novel that happens to have homicides in it, it is good.

GORY CRIME NOIR WITH THE SANDMAN.......2007-06-09
I've always thought that The Sandman Mystery Theatre was one of the most underrated titles of the 1990's. To be sure, it was a niche title, but the fact that it ran for 70 issues is testament to the fact that it had a loyal audience. The book had a strong 30's crime noir look and feel to it both in the stories by Matt Wagner and the art by Guy Davis and Vince Locke. Both artists used a palette of washed out greens, browns, and grays and various half-tones. This re-imagining of the Sandman portrayed him as less superhero and more influenced by 30's pulp action heroes like The Shadow or the Spider, as he faced off against sinister and often bizarre villains.
The Wesley Dodds of this series was far from an archetype hero...the artists depicted him as a sort of frumpy, bespectacled man, who looked more like an accountant that an avenging crusader of the night. Dodds was almost like a junior Bruce Wayne, complete with a secret lab/hideout and a doting butler. What set The Sandman Mystery Theatre apart from other titles, and I resist calling this a super hero title, is that Dodds appears far more than the Sandman, and the emphasis is on the man more than the alter ego. Center in the series is his relationship with girlfriend Dian Belmont, daughter of the District Attorney. Belmont will discover Wesley's secret during the first story in this trade paperback and almost leave him. But she's also intrigued and will end up essentially as Wes' partner and assisting him.
For those wondering about continuity, the tales throughout the run of the title take place very early in his career. In fact, it is in this book, which collects issues #21 - 28, where the Sandman is first given his name by the local newspapers. There are two story arcs in this trade, "Dr. Death" and "Night of the Butcher" and if those are titles straight out the Shadow Magazine then I don't know what is!
"Dr. Death" features art by one of my personal favorites Vince Locke. Vince and I grew up in the same suburb west of Detroit and he was the first comic talent that I ever interviewed some twenty years ago when he was doing "Deadworld" for Arrow Comics. Few artists handle morbid subjects as well as Locke does and he and Wagner make a great team on "Dr. Death." A wannabe Doctor, who is dating Dian's best friend, is giving out sinister prescriptions to his patients, predicting their impending doom. The Doctor is targeting those he deems unworthy of life by society's standards; a washed up prize-fighter, a once renowned pianist, an aged dancehall girl. All die agonizing deaths and the Sandman has to figure out just who the killer is and how he's managing to kill them.
Regular series artist, Guy Davis, is back for "Night of the Butcher" a horrific tale about a string of serial killings where the victims are brutally hacked to death. Even more gruesome is that the victims are missing several body parts. The police make a grisly discovery in a sewer pipe of a lower half of a man's torso. The Sandman butts head with a hardnosed police lieutenant who considers the vigilante more of a threat than the killer. Things are about go get a whole lot more nauseating for both men once they follow the killer's trail deep into long forgotten parts of the city's sewer system.
Both of these stories display the Sandman's resourcefulness as well as his vulnerability, he even gets his butt kicked but good by the tough cop, escaping only when a records clerk his the Lieutenant with a broom handle.
Sandman Mystery Theatre is some of Wagner's finest work. Note that as the book is part of the Vertigo line, it is intended for mature readers due to language, violence, nudity, and gore. Great title!
REVIEWED BY TIM JANSON
Excellent series. Two weak arcs in this trade.......2007-05-15
I have loved everything in the series that I have read. This trade, however, contains two of the weakest arcs. It is still very much worth reading but I'd recommend waiting for the next volume first.
This series does perfectly capture the period noir tone and it does not hold back on the racism and sexism that were pretty common discourse at the time. It is quite refreshing to see this shown frankly since it is something that nostalgia often covers up.
The Series makes a statement.......2007-05-01
This particular volume is a bit more voluminous than earlier installments and once read in full the choice to combine these two stories into one volume is fully justified.
There are certainly 2 entertaining pulp/horror tales taking place, but the focus shifts more fully to Wesley and Dian's growing relationship. The secret of Dodds' alter ego threatens to split the two lovers and this is the true reason to purchase this volume. Wesley is confronted by the lifestyle he has chosen to lead and is forced to deal with the consequences of his heroism and secret life.
Dian comes out the better of the two as far as reader sympathy, but even she is not completely safe from some much needed soul searching. She struggles with the last vestiges of her lazy, naive, rich girl persona; baggage she hautily thought herself rid of after a few real world experiences.
If you are already invested in the series this is a must read as it delivers a true pay out for the characters and the reader.
If you haven't read the series up till now then after a brief 5 minute spoiler session with a fan you will be primed to jump in at this point.
Happy reading.
Typical Sandman.......2007-04-27
This fourth volume by Vertigo keeping The Sandman Theatre alive is a typical entry in the series, but looses any out and out shock value as the reader drawn in by the uniqueness of individual comics in the limited series already picked up The Tarantula and The Vamp. Though free of nudity, contains a lot of swearing and racial slurs. Of note in this entry is the appearance of The Sandman's alter eho Wesley Dodds without the gas mask and trenchcoat costume and by now we are familiar with the two women as henchmen. The horrifyingly racist cover artwork to this graphic novel only adds to its kitsch appeal. Suggested for more mature readers.

Book Description
Lee Fairchild has realized every actor's dream-a theater of her own. The dream is about to turn into a nightmare. Who-or what-lives on the third floor? The theater was an abandoned burlesque house where the homeless lived-until Lee and her staff scrub it out. It doesn't matter, she tells herself, that the theater sits in Hell's Kitchen on the seedy fringes of Times Square, that it's under-budgeted and understaffed and that she (as Administrative Director) will play only one role this first season. It's an Equity theater, offering five plays in repertory. Times Square redevelopment makes the property desirable. With her husband recently dead and her daughter away at college, Lee falls into a passion¬ate affair with a younger man. Bizarre, seemingly unrelated events-beginning with a homeless man found dead on the third floor of the theater-escalate to ritual murder. Qualities that make her a good actress-imagination, empathy-pull her through the looking glass into a nightmare world, to the brink of death. Over all hovers a Mexican mask, stolen from the tomb at Monte Alban, its eyes glittering with secrets of the ancient Aztecs and sacrifice. The characters are drawn from the authors' years of experience in theater and film: Alan Dunbar, Lee's brilliant but erratic artistic director, with mysterious gaps in his resume; Ernst Kromer, guest director from Europe, tyrannical, rigid and uncooperative; Michael Day, Lee's sexy and mysterious assistant; wraithlike Fleur Mahoney, whose first role is a dead girl-and she almost is; Barry Blackwell, talented actor, compulsive practical joker; Harry O'Brien, company stage manager, who'd kill for a role. Characters from the "real" world include Alan's lover, Walter Kaplan, eccentric psychiatrist and medical anthropolo¬gist; Heather, Lee's 18-year-old daughter, who has a surprising secret life; pock-marked, cynical NYPD Detective Mordecai Green, who moonlights as an actor. Kay Williams is a writer and actress, with years of experience in theater and film. Eileen Wyman, writer and editor, has a background in radio/television. Both live in New York City in Hell's Kitchen. Advance praise for Butcher of Dreams: "Smart, tough, talented, sensitive Lee Fairchild is just the kind of woman who can successfully manage and act in her own off-Broadway theatre. She can cope with the seedy streets of New York in the 1980's, and can juggle the many needs of her gifted but tormented co-workers with the vision of great shows. But Lee is emotionally vulnerable because of her husband's recent death, and when a ritually mutilated body is found in her theatre she must fight her way through a bewildering mesh of loves, fears, egos, myths, and blood to discover the truth that will save her theatre and herself. Full of authentic gritty detail about off-Broadway in the 1980's, Butcher of Dreams will keep readers turning pages." P.M. Carlson, author of CROSSFIRE "Butcher of Dreams is original, creative, and suspenseful. The ending made me breathless and I stayed up until 3 am finishing the dramatic last third of the novel! However, it is quite amusing in places as well, creating comic relief. One of the talents of the authors is to cast suspicion on almost all the players. The insight one gains into the mind and motivations of a psychopath and the descriptions of the occult are truly captivating and gripping, a reflection of excellent research. Butcher of Dreams is so much more than mystery. With its original metaphors, similes and lyrical descriptions, it is an enthralling and creative novel. I loved it!" Mara Stark, retired teacher of Advanced Placement Composition
Customer Reviews:
Lee - a "real" person.......2007-10-10
This "who done it" mystery grips the reader from the start with its cast of possible villains, but beyond that, the authors have created main character Lee Fairchild with whom everyone should be able to identify. In her heart Lee knows of whom to be weary, but because of her emotions, she finds the best in all of her colleagues. How many of us have faced the same dilemma? De-Nile is not just a river in Egypt, but a real, if ineffective, coping device of human beings, and vulnerable Lee falls into the chasm of denial, causing her to justify behaviors of others rather than face them head-on. Even as I worried over her physical safety, I related to the emotional stresses she faced, making her seem "real" rather than a character in a novel.
Besides the effective characterizations of Lee and her colleagues, the authors have written a book that offers insight into the world of theater that I never knew existed. It has given me an enhanced appreciation of the "art" of theater and has encouraged me to support repertory theater productions within my community. Plus, the novel is simply good reading, one that's hard to put down. Just as the cover grabbed my eyes, the words grabbed my passion for reading. Don't miss this book!
gripping thriller.......2007-09-14
Butcher of Dreams is one of those "who dun it" mysteries where you supect everyone and you just can't put it down once you start reading. And, interestingly enough, as I carried it around, many people asked about the book because of its intriguing title and cover. The book does not disappoint. I ended up finishing it late one night in bed with my heart pounding! It is an exciting, scary and satisfying thriller!!
Mystery and suspense -- stage front!.......2007-09-09
I thoroughly enjoyed Butcher of Dreams with its picture of 80s off-Broadway theater and its dabbling in Aztec cults and lore.
Trusting Lee Fairchild, empathetic Alan Dunbar, and their third partner crusty Ernst Kromer open a repertory theater on 42nd St. in NYC with a foundation grant. From the moment they begin rehearsals, disturbing events take place and seem to conspire against them. One after another each actor in the theater falls under suspicion as the potential perpetrator.
Looking at the story from the perspective of 2007, one might wonder how Lee could be so trusting and innocent until one remembers that the story is set in the 80s before identity theft and sociopathic behavior were much in the news.
I found the book increasingly difficult to lay down, especially as the second half came into play. The authors have achieved a quite satisfying novel of mystery and suspense.
A big thumbs up!!.......2007-09-02
Kay Williams and Eileen Wyman team up for this suspenseful mystery/romance. Williams is a writer and actress with ONE LAST DANCE: IT'S NEVER TOO LATE TO FALL IN LOVE, a novel begun by her father, journalist Mardo Williams and finished by she and her sister, Jerri Lawrence. Published in 2005, DANCE garnered a Best Regional Fiction Award and a finalist nomination for the National Readers' Choice Award. Eileen Wyman is a comedy writer and has experience in radio and television. Both authors live in Hell's Kitchen, now safe and gentrified, but are originally from Ohio.
Lee Fairchild is a recent widow who has picked herself up by launching a under-budgeted theater in Hell's Kitchen on the fringes of Times Square with an old friend. The theater is almost immediately plagued with problems when a derelict is found murdered in a cult-like slaying on the third floor of the theater. A young man named Michael Day wanders off the street and into Lee's life as an assistant and lover. But Day's excess of spending and propensity towards lying, as well as his grand romantic gestures, keep Lee from seeing that someone is robbing the theater blind:
"'Bounced?' Lee stopped sorting the mail. The phone cradled in the hollow of her shoulder slipped. She caught it at her rib cage and wrestled it back to her ear. 'That's our new account.' No new exactly. She'd opened it at the beginning of the season, along with the other two. But that was the first check she'd written from it. 'They showed me the notice.' His voice rose indignantly. 'Insufficient funds. It came in their mail this morning.'"
Williams and Wyman put together a first-rate suspense. They draw the reader in from the first page, and hold them with their vivid descriptions of ritualistic goings-on in this New York theater, even as Lee Fairchild is struggling to keep her dream afloat. This mystery is so character driven that it is easy to suspect any of the theater company...they all have something to hide. But it is Lee's ultimate struggle with loneliness and an overloaded professional struggle that brings the story to its shocking climax. Don't start this wonderful story if you have something else to do, because this fantastic plot will win the fight! A big thumbs up!!

Compelling Mystery in Theatre Setting.......2007-08-25
I loved it. I was pulled immediately into the tension of the mysterious and frightening events. The behind the scenes life of the theatre and the complex personalities who staff it create a fascinating setting as the mystery develops and the suspense becomes unbearable. Suspicion as to the perpetrator builds in many directions and I found myself wanting to talk to the lead character, Lee Fairchild, to advise her. Eventually I sucumbed. I ignored the world around me and read to the end nonstop.

Findley amazes with his Versatility!.......1998-09-30
In a departure from the usual, shoot-'em up, technnobabble of his Shadowrun serials, this Earth's Dawn book delighted me. Rich characterizations and several unexpected plot turns made this far from ordinary game-companion type fare. It is a shame that Findley will not be able to continue the story of Delain, Karena and Gaylear, they are characters I would have liked to meet again. A caution to FASA though, please DON'T go the route of post-humous releases a la V.C. Andrews! Let the man lie, but please don't forget his greatness!
Praise for Findley's versatility.......1998-09-26
Nigel Findley is sorely missed by this particular individual. Though not one who runs the shadows I first met Nigel through, "Lone Wolf". Of all the shadowrun novels I've read, Nigel's are the absolute best. "Lost Kaer" was Nigel's attempt at a genre I prefer to sci-fi and I was exceedingly pleased. The depth of the characters was well done and it is simply a shame that we won't find out what happens with Gaylear, Karena and Delain in the future. At any rate, if you like Findley and you like a more "fantasy" based story, "Lost Kaer" is the book for you.
