Some Die Telling.......2007-05-22
I loved the suspense, but the story line dragged until close to the end.
A Must Read.......2005-03-26
If you stop before the end you will truly be disappointed. The end nothing less than sensational.
Book Description
• The first book to seriously examine the feminine aspect of Egyptian religion sheds new light on the important role of the goddess Hathor-Sekhmet.
• This accessible study sheds much new light on ancient Egypt and provides a powerful new perspective on women's theology.
• The text is accompanied by nearly 200 striking and unusual illustrations
Drawing from temple art, myths, rituals, and poetry, Hathor Rising is the first book to seriously examine the feminine aspect of the complex Egyptian pantheon and to shed new light on the pivotal place held there by the fiery serpent-eyed goddess, Hathor-Sekhmet. The primary importance of this goddess is emphasized by the serpent coiled over the forehead of every pharaoh--the supreme symbol of royal power in ancient Egypt. The erotic vitality and fierce aggression of the goddess, qualities commonly perceived as masculine in nature, gives the reigning Pharaoh the capacity for dynamic leadership. The author explores the symbolism behind this and other manifestations of the goddess in Egyptian cosmology and provides new revelations on the rich tradition of feminine divinity in Egypt. Hathor Rising is the most important study of one of the world's oldest civilizations to appear in years.
Customer Reviews:
Hathor Rising - definately worth a read.......2005-05-21
It's so refreshing to read a book such as this one which explores the feminine aspects of the Egyptian Pantheon in depth. The book appears well researched and the author comes across as having a very genuine interest Hathor and her impact on Egyptian life.
I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone wanting more than the 'this is this, that is that' you often find in books covering Egyptian Gods and Goddesses.
Not for beginners.......2005-03-09
If you are a New Ager who thinks Gerald Massey, Alvin Kuhn and R.Schwaller de Lubicz have the inside track on Egyptian religion, this isn't the book for you. Try the fantasy/New Age section where those books of creative fiction belong.
If, like one reviewer on this page, you are unaware that Hatshepsut did not have a son (only a step-son/nephew) and most recent historical research suggests that he did not kill her or even dismantle her monuments, you might need to brush up on your history in a decent and recent history book before heading into this complex topic. This is a book which presumes a knowledge of ancient Egypt greater than one can pick up in historical novels or trips down the Nile.
If, on the other hand, you have a genuine interest in scholarly study of ancient Egyptian religion, especially the much-neglected feminine aspect you will find this book useful and interesting. This is particularly true since similar good books on Egyptian goddesses are either not in English or prohibitively expensive.
Faulty logic turns fact into fantasy.......2004-07-08
I was disappointed to find that many of the author's assertions are supported by incorrect interpretations of historical customs. It was, therefore, impossible for me to consider those assertions. For example, the author holds that we can tell Hatchepsut was highly respected because there are so many statues in her honor. What the author ignores is the fact that the Pharaoh's (ALL of them) commissioned numerous statues of themselves during their reign. (Ramses the II seems to hold the record. I saw many hundreds of statues of him while in Egypt in January.) While Hatchepsut was arguably the most successful Pharaoh of Egypt, the statues are not proof of that. Such a basic misinterpretation destroyed the credibility of this author.
Hatchepsut was likely murdered by her son because she was very powerful and well respected, and because she would not turn over the rule to him. Many of the statues and glyphs of Hatchepsut were defaced by him and his followers after her death. Had the author pointed this out, it would have paid higher tribute to the power of women at the time because there is NO truly powerful person who has no enemies.
I have great respect for the ancient Egyptian culture, in part because women were respected as equals then. But in order to pay true respect to them and to understand the culture better, it is important to maintain a connection to facts, and resist glossing over those circumstances which aren't as palatable.
Original and Fascinating.......2001-09-18
Ms Roberts provides an original and unusual insight into the feminine aspect of Egyptian religion exploring the importance of the goddess Hathor-Sekhmet. A fascinating read.
Insightful Read!.......2001-03-28
This book is by far one of the most insightful books on Ancient Egyptian Theology. Ms. Roberts brings to light much information often neglected by "egyptologists" bent on focusing only on the male aspect of the very complicated Egyptian Cosmologies. The importance of Hathor in the roles of Kingship is a subject that I found fascinating and helped me understand more fully how the Egyptians viewed their Kings (and Queens)and the world around them. This is a must read for anyone bogged down by the out-dated material previously printed on the Egyptian Pantheon.

Customer Reviews:
Ancient Rising.......2007-07-15
Dan Ryan is an acclaimed writer of an apocalyptic series of books. His wife and daughter are his life but writing is his air. Once immersed in his writing all else is soon forgotten. While completing his latest novel, Dan once again was lost in his work when tragically his wife and daughter were killed in an accident. Too late, Dan realized what his family meant to him and became hopelessly lost in grief.
At the lowest depths of his grief, a bizarre series of events began. A strange man claiming to be the Messenger of the Gods, Hermes, insisted that Dan was the key to Atlantis. This man claimed that not only would the writer help find Atlantis but also bring the lost continent back to the surface.
Ancient Rising has a good deal of action, intrigue, and ample twists and turns melded into the story of Dan Ryan coming to grips with his new existence. Finding the lost continent of Atlantis and bringing it to the surface is an extraordinary task but what happens next. I look forward to finding out in the next two books of this trilogy.
A fair read with a new Twist on the Atlantis story.......2007-01-31
This is the first in a a series or may be a trilogy about Atlantis' discovery. The Gods are alive and well living in Atlantis, but need a human( the descent of Hercules, no less) to save them. Enter one of the Gods to provide "guidance". The ensuing tale is light hearted and moves rather quickly ( read the book in a few hours, but then I read alot) I am not sure if I will pursue this series, not enough substance for my taste. Give a whirl and see what you think.
It was a very pleasant surprise!.......2006-06-24
I really enjoyed this book. I wasn't sure what to expect when I got this but I have say I was very pleasantly surprised. The book was very fast past and kept me turning the pages. I was captured by the imagery of the adventure, the exotic locations and the excitement. The ending is left open for an obvious sequel and I will definitely be looking for that one. This was a great discovery! I recommend you give it a try.
Overall a disappointment.......2006-02-25
This book seems pretty one dimensional to me and characters lack depth and the events in the plot just seem to work too well with the characters making huge leaps in logic and the rest of the characters just say OK and go with it. This book does have a few interesting ideas , however they are not enough to save it. This is the first book in a series and as such the ending left purposely open, but I am left with no desire to finish the series... overall I would not recommend this book.
A Powerful Tale.......2006-01-19
reviewed by Angela Wilds for fantasynovelreview.com
Recently widowed, Dan Ryan thinks he may be cracking up from grief when he's visited by the Greek God Hermes. Hermes reveals to Dan the ancient Gods of Greece are not a myth but are in fact real and imprisoned on Atlantis. Only Dan can free them and restore them to their former greatness.
When Dan resists, Hermes gets tough! I'd think this would have touched off warning bells for Dan but maybe his grief incapacitated his thought process. Anyway, Dan goes along with the idea of freeing the Gods just to prove he's not cracking up. He hooks up with some of the best archaeologists in the trade. Together they journey to Greece, Egypt and Spain looking for the keys that will unlock the secret of what happened to Atlantis, how to reach the lost city, and grant the Gods their freedom. Of course, there is a rich arch villain who is racing to beat them to the punch. What follows is a rock `em, sock `em race--full of murder and mayhem--to the prize. Let's hope it's not a race they'll regret running!
Mr. De La Torre has written a powerful tale of man's dedication to unlocking the secrets of the past, regardless of the cost or consequences! Mr. De La Torre seems to have a good deal of knowledge about the Gods and archaeology. He's done the homework and come up with a novel full of exotic places, musty-dusty finds and of course the Gods--those devious little schemers! Follow along with Dan Ryan's quest to appease the Gods. Meet the Gods and find out their plans for Humankind.
This is a thoroughly enjoyable read that will put you in mind of the old Hercules and Xena programs.
Book Description
The temples of Abu Simbel have fascinated travelers since they became known to the Western world in the nineteenth century. And since the 1960s when the rising waters created by the Aswan High Dam threatened to engulf the site, visitors' imaginations have been captivated by the elaborate international rescue operation, described by the author as ''a great moment that no one will ever forget: the most advanced technology of the twentieth century was used to save one of the most amazing achievements of a civilization that preceeded it by 3,300 years.''
Prepared by one of the world's best-known Egyptologists, Dr. Zahi Hawass, this lavishly illustrated book is the ideal companion on a visit to the unique monuments of Abu Simbel.
Customer Reviews:
A Must-Have book for amateur Egyptologists !.......2006-08-04
..... The world's top Egyptologist takes you to the most exciting temple in Egypt !!
..... Ever since my first trip to Egypt in 1985, Abu Simbal has been my favorite place. The huge temples carved out of the mountainside, (which were moved when the Aswan High Dam was built), are incredable works of art and architecture.
..... This book aptly illustrates the beauty of the 60 - foot states of Rameses the Great, and his beloved wife, Nefertari...and Dr. Zahi Hawass brings to life the stories depicted in the carvings inside the temples.
..... There are also the photos of the 4 statues in the sanctuary of the larger temple, which are illuminated by the rising sun twice a year....... Dr. Hawass, the Director of the Egyptian Antiquities Department, brilliantly captures the wonder of this event in this book.
..... If you can't get to Egypt, and Abu Simbal, in person, this book is the next best thing.
Mysteries of Abu Simbel.......2006-02-20
The book by Zahi Hawass has a lot of information packed into it which I was surprised for such a small (88 pgs) book. It covers the history of Seti I- Rameses II dynasty, the UNESCO project to protect the Nubian monuments in the 1960s. The Aswan High Dam, the temples given away and where they are today. What was moved - to where. Even the Nubian Museum which opened about 10 years ago. Many books were written on this topic before the work was done, it is good to find one that elaborates exactly what WAS done as opposed to advancing theories. Excellent book.
useful guide.......2002-05-08
This book is an introduction about Nubia, the region where Abu Simbel is located. The author describes and discusses the High Dam and the Unesco campaign to save the temples; he provides details concerning the Sound And Light project. He then provides a brief summary of Ramses II's life and family. Various sections of Nubian temples are briefly described. Hawass also discusses the architecture of two beautiful rock-cut temples, and examines scenes covering walls. Maps, plans, illustrations and color photographs complete this useful and enjoyable guide, recommended for everyone.

Customer Reviews:
Fast Paced and a Good Read.......2006-10-11
Marilyn Todd's fast paced historical murder mysteries set in the time of Ancient Rome and featuring the beautiful Claudia Seferius are growing in popularity and the author is up there with the David Wishart's, Steven Saylor`s, not forgetting the Lindsey Davis's of the book world. Perhaps to have a woman and an alluring one at that, rather than a man as the sleuth and lead character is a stroke of genius on Todd's part.
Claudia Seferius has now become an accomplished wine merchant after taking over the business when her husband died, despite his family openly making it known that they should have the business and not her. But now she has done the unthinkable as far as respectable business goes. She has taken payment from a customer but kept the wine he purchased to sell again. Not a good idea as the irate customer nicknamed the Scorpion has sent a hit man to kill the beautiful Claudia.
However, there is a way out for Claudia. The hit man delivers an alternative that Claudia finds more attractive than lying in a pool of blood, or worse. If she can find out who killed his daughter, he will allow Claudia to live. Simple, all Claudia has to do is infiltrate a house, where a matriarchal cut worship nature, keep men as sex slaves and communicate through sign language and then find out who killed the girl. While on the case she is surprised to find her old sparring partner Marcus Orbilio, already at work undercover trying to expose a gang of criminals.

Book Description
From the peaceful summits of Delphi to the political turmoil that spawned democracy, the story of Athens becomes a paradigm, if not a photocopy predicting the history of western civilization. To understand Pericles, who lived its dreams, is a lesson in forbearance for our own time. Guts and imagination built "the glory that was Greece." Despite war and plague, defeat and disaster, an idea was born that is still the hope of mankind. We glibly accept our freedom as a birthright, but never has that freedom seemed more precarious or more precious than now, in the 21st century. To meet the people who caused democrary to happen-the cunning Themistocles, the steadfast Leonidas, the legendary Cleisthenes-is an experience as enduring as Mt. Parnassus. Enduring too, is the love between Pericles and Aspasia, a beautiful, brilliant girl from Miletus, in Ionia. Their love affair is one of the greatest in ancient history. Some have said that Aspasia inspired the building of the Parthenon. The Parthenon, too, becomes a character, with its own secrets, including the 192 horesman on its inner frieze-the exact number of Greeks buried at Marathon-and a treasury room at the western end that once held the golden throne used by Xerxes to watch his victory at Salamis, which became, instead, the defeat that ended Persia's tyranny over Greece. THE BIRTH AND DEATH OF ATHENIAN DEMOCRACY: The Story of Pericles is the result of five years' intensive research. Technically, it is fiction, but the author agrees, with Gore Vidal, that the term "fiction" does not necessarily mean "false." On the contrary, the imagination necessary to transfer fact into something that can be felt with emotions is often closer to the truth than cold statistics. Or at least Clara Rising (Ph.D. English/Philosophy, retired professor of Humanities) thinks so. Mother of four, grandmother of six, great-grandmother of one, in her 80th year she rides an Arabian who became the model for the little mare Pericles canters in Chapter One.

Book Description
Traces five core beliefs that vastly predate all of today's organized religions. Some aspects of these eternal truths or universal spiritual laws have been absorbed into contemporary religions while some have been vigorously suppressed. Author William Fix uncovers these core beliefs with synchronistic material from many spiritual traditions from Black Elk to Eliade; from the Egyptian Book of the Dead to Jung, from Edgar Cayce to Teilhard de Chardin and draws on his years of research in early Christianity, shamanism, ancient hermetic, Gnostic, and Indian writings, as well as his groundbreaking book on the Great Pyramid (Pyramid Odyssey). He challenges such widely held theories as the notion of scientific progress from ancient times to the present, and the presumed irrationality of religion.
"William Fix probes the sacred symbols of humanitys past and finds in them truth to guide us into a spiritual future. Perceptive, well written, and enlightening, this book will feed the religious hungers of our day in a way that traditional religious formulas can never accomplish."
--Bishop John Spong, best selling author of Why Christianity Must Change or Die and Rescuing the Bible from Fundamentalism
"Few authors have the background and ability to delve into the many fields of often neglected knowledge that William Fix does. [In this book] he has produced a readable, exciting and compelling case for the spiritual nature of men and women, and he challenges his readers to continue to seek mankinds ultimate goal of oneness with God."
--Edgar Evans Cayce, author of Edgar Cayce on Atlantis
"Behind the dogma of religions and the ever-shifting theories of modern science there exists a traditional, unchanging view of the universe and our place in it, spiritually based and truly scientific. At certain periods in history this knowledge is revealed, reviving art and culture and giving rise to just, long-lasting civilizations. Inevitably, in response to the chaos of our times, the divine pattern of our ordered universe is now becoming apparent. William Fix is in tune with this wonderful and timely revelation, and he is well qualified to describe its principles and contents. This book is indeed revolutionary, not in a violent or material sense but in its effects on readers minds, relieving them of fears and false doctrines and guiding them into ways of thought and perception which accord with human nature and are the surest ways towards happiness."
--John Michell, author of The Dimensions of Paradise.

Pyramid Power.......2007-06-13
If anything is buried in the Great Pyramid at Giza, it's Egyptology. What an incredible book - I've read it several times (as well as his other books - Star Maps and Pyramid Odyssey) and I've found that my whole view of the history of the world and the origins of mankind has changed significantly. The histories of the world and science are not linear.
Informative, challenging, controversial, profoundly engaging.......2000-06-05
In Lake Of Memory Rising: Return Of The Five Ancient Truths At The Heart Of Religion, William Fix draws on thirty years of study in Christianity, shamanism, and ancient hermetic, Gnostic, and Indian writings, as well as his ground breaking earlier writings on the measurements of the pyramids and ancient star maps to present a ground synthesis of comparative religion and mythology. Several provocative chapters examine the spirit known as Jesus and his many incarnations leading up to his likely initiation in the Great Pyramid and ultimate triumph over death. Especially recommended to students of comparative religion and metaphysical studies, Lake Of Memory Rising is fascinating, informative, challenging, controversial, and profoundly engaging reading.
