Book Description

From the author of the acclaimed Burke private-eye series comes an ambitious and chilling novel that shows us not only what evil is, but where it comes from. For Shella is nothing less than a tour of evil's spawning ground, conducted by one of its natural predators.

He is called "Ghost" because he is so nondescript as to be invisible and because he slays with such reflexive ease that he might be one of the dead. Once he traveled with a woman who was called "Shella" -- because those who had treated her as a horrendously ill-used child had tried to make her come out of her shell. Now Shella has vanished in a wilderness of strip clubs and peep shows, and Ghost is looking for her, guided by a killer's instinct and the recognition that can only exist between two people who have been damaged past the point of no return. The result is Andrew Vachss's most compelling work to date, the thriller reimagined as a bleak romance of the damned.

5 out of 5 stars Dark, Bleak, and Wonderful- Sadly Enough.......2007-10-11

This was the first Vachss book I ever read, and it shocked me. It was wonderful, but terrible. I don't know. You either get it, or you don't. This book is so simple. It shows the true power of words (much like Hemmingway did)- no more, no less, nothing extra. No fluff. If you want a happy book, go read Dr. Seuss or something. If you want a book that just strikes you to the core, read this. Then go read more Vachss.

4 out of 5 stars nice departure from the Burke series.......2006-08-26

This book is pretty good overall. I read alot of Vachss, and they do tend to become somewhat similar after a while, however this one is kind of different. The main character is very intense, as all of Vachss's main characters are, and ther storyline is very good, with a few small issues. All in all, if you like Vachss's Burke and Cross series, you'll like this one too.

5 out of 5 stars Well written story about a bleak world........2004-11-25

Vachss writing is spare and brutally to the point (no Anne Rice syndrome here). The world he writes about is bleak, devasting and brutal. In Shella he delves into the world of a young boy abandoned at places where he lived with fear and the constant threat of abuse and grew up to be a cold-hearted, brutal killer for hire who is known as Ghost. Only Shella, a street toughened dancer, ever saw beneath the hard shell. They are separated when Ghost is thrown in jail and now that he's out his one goal is to find Shella.

This is an interesting look into the life of a killer. How cold-heartedly it happens out of necessity and survival. The book is bleak (have I said that already?) and disturbing. This was a difficult to put down book but it's not one I'd like to revisit due its complete sense of despair.

4 out of 5 stars Love?.......2002-12-29

Ghost promises to kill Shella's father. He tells her this. It is so romantic you weep when you read it. Vachss writes crisp. So sharp it cuts your mind. He creates characters with such depth they are bottomless. They are bottomless because the depths of human depravity is bottomless. You like Ghost by the end of the book. Hell, you like him at the beginning. To label him an antihero belittles his character, just as labeling him a murderer belittles his actions. It would be accurate but not accurate. He does kill. A lot. But there is no emotion in it. He is like a weapon. Neither truly good nor truly evil. Simply there. Waiting to have its sights locked and its trigger pulled. But Ghost, John, whatever his name, doesn't need anyone to justify his actions. He doesn't care about those things. All he cares about is Shella. He will go to hells without number to find her if necessary. And it is necessary. I don't know if one could call what he feels for Shella love. I don't know what it is. Love doesn't exist where he and Shella are. It never did and never will. But the closest word that describes it is love. Does love exist in hell? You'd have to ask Ghost. Perhaps that is what Vachss wants to tell a story about. Maybe he wants to show us what true love is like in true hell.

4 out of 5 stars A disturbing nightmare........2001-10-12

This story, about a soulless man's obsessive search for the woman he loves, is a dark, disturbing nightmare of a book. It shows in graphic detail what this world can do to those unfortunate lost children crushed by the cruelty of the world. Recommended for readers with steely nerves.

Instinct told them that the way home lay to the west. And so the doughty young Labrador retriever, the roguish bull terrier and the indomitable Siamese set out through the Canadian wilderness. Separately, they would soon have died. But, together, the three house pets faced starvation, exposure, and wild forest animals to make their way home to the family they love. The Incredible Journey is one of the great children's stories of all time--and has been popular ever since its debut in 1961.

3 out of 5 stars The Incredible Journey Review.......2007-02-22

I think that the Incredible Journey Book is really good. I like it because it has lots of adventure and lots of different points of view. The beginning is pretty boring but gets exiting soon, like around the setting change. The things I don't like are the excessive phone-talk, and I-know-what-will-happen-feeling that it gives you. Overall I would rate it between Harry Potter and your barely-better-than-average book that you will find. The fun of it is that you never know the detailed parts outcome which has great effect in this book. I think it is very original to make the characters split up for some time and rejoin the others. I like the lazy feeling that I'm not interested. See you later -- don't care about friendship. These parts are very amusing. It may sound predictable of the ending but it is so exiting that you never consider thinking of a different part of the book because it's so addicting. I recommend this book to public readers.

4 out of 5 stars It really is an incredible journey.......2007-02-21

In the Incredible Journey by Shelia Burnford 3 animals go on a dangerous current owner (John Longbridge) is not clear but they somehow know their former owner is coming back.

Three animals venture from their own home off to their old home and encounter many dangers along the way. Not long after they leave they meet a bear who starts scratching and swiping at Bodger the bull terrier. Then a couple of days later they meet helpful Indians who feed the animals and clean Bodger's wounds. After a few hours they leave the Indians. When the animals come to a river Luath gets across it fine but has to encourage Bodger to come over. Once Bodger comes over the cat won't cross the river. When he finally does the dam breaks and Luath and Tao are swept away. They meet many other exciting dangers that I'll let you read about.

My favorite character was Bodger because he was the funniest.

I would recommend this book to 8-12 yr. olds because of challenging vocabulary. I would also recommend this to animal lovers and adventure readers.

          The Incredible Journey

The intro I thought it was an ok book. It's about animals who work together to get through dangerous obstacles. And death defying stunts just to get to their home and family's. It's about two dogs and a cat named sassy.
Id says if you like bears and dangerous adventures. You'd love this book. And its incredible details. And lots of punctuation. It's a pretty good book if you like animals.
There are many other characters. Like loath and sassy and much more. Has danger family and lots of animals. You'd really get a kick out of this book. The cat falls off a waterfall and luckily it survives. Its really interesting think you would love this book it has lots of details.
There are many other settings in this book. And lots of adventures. Dangerous bears and lots of fresh trees. Lots of punctuation and creatures. The animals encounter a bear and they luckily get away.
Do you like animals and danger? This b book you would like. It's filled with action and near death. This book is such a good book people read it around the world. I think the book was interesting around the end and the middle.

          5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Journey Home.......2006-12-14

The Incredible Journey is a great and heartwarming book. It is about three animals (an old Bull Terrier, a young Labrador retriever, and a feisty Siamese cat) who set out to find their master and family. It was a dangerous but wonderful journey. This book made me feel like I was actually there in the Canadian wilderness. I think anyone who loves animals and adventure would like this book.

This long journey through the Canadian wilderness was dangerous. The three animals encounter many obstacles. While in the wilderness the terrier heard some wrestling in the leaves. When he turned around he saw a baby black bear. He was not afraid until the bear started to tackle him. The bear's sharp claws made deep wounds in the side of the old dogs shoulder. When the Labrador heard the fighting he came from behind the bear to help the terrier. The Labrador started to growl at the baby bear and then the bear left. The cat also encountered danger. He was chased by a Lynx who seemed very hungry and looking for food. The Lynx almost captured the cat until the cat found a small burrow and hid from the Lynx. The Lynx was too big for the burrow and after many attempts to get the cat he did not succeed. While the Lynx was making this noise to get the cat a young boy who was hunting with his father shot the Lynx because he thought the Lynx was going to eat him. While the Labrador was hunting he found a porcupine and went to go eat it but the porcupine was to fast and shot some quills at the lab's cheek. As a result the lab caught an infection. Through all these obstacles the animals survived because they stayed together and watched out for each other.

The wonderful part of the book was the companionship of the animals and their love for each other. They seemed to have human like qualities. The Labrador helped the cat and dog across a river, the animals shared food, and comforted each other. They made sure that they would all end the journey together.

The animals also encountered many people along their journey. Some people did not help the animals like the farmer whose dog attacked the Labrador and the old terrier. Mackenzie and Nell were farmers who helped the dogs. Mackenzie took the quills out of the Labradors face, cleaned out the infection and gave him soft food to eat. They also gave the terrier food and milk to fatten him up because his ribs where showing under his fur.

This book was truly an inspiration. I would recommend The Incredible Journey to anyone over ten years old. The book has many adjectives and hard words which made it difficult to read sometimes. I hope if my animals ever went on a journey they would stay together and come back home.

4 out of 5 stars A retake or preview of THE FAVORITE SISTER.......2002-01-25

I am still trying to figure out how this book is related to THE FAVORITE SISTER (told more from the perspective of Penelope Devereux's brother the Earl of Essex, and her lover, eventually her second husband). Penelope Devereux must have been an extraordinary woman (like her sister-in-law Frances Walsingham, widow of Sir Philip Sidney and of the Earl of Essex). She betrothed herself very young to a penniless younger son (and a Catholic to boot) but agreed to marry the very rich Robert Rich, grandson of the man who sent Thomas More to his death. [This Robert Rich, the younger, later became Earl of Warwick, a title seized by the Tudors from their Nevill and Plantagenet relatives]. Lord Rich was clearly not a pleasant man, although the author shows some sympathy for him (he is at least a good father - mostly). Penelope then fell in love with Philip Sidney who went on to fame by composing love poems in honor of Lady Rich and dying gloriously in battle. The affair was not consummated, but Penelope did commit adultery with her second lover, Charles Blunt, Lord Mountjoy (who believed himself to be her legitimate husband). This second affair had a number of problems. For one, the children born by her to her lover were illegitimate, although born during their mother's marriage to Rich - they could not inherit either the Warwick earldom (now held by a different family) nor their father's title. For another, Penelope Rich refused to countenance an annulment of her first marriage because she would bastardize her children by that marriage. [It is also doubtful that she would have just cause under the post-Reformation marriage laws; the pre-Reformation and pre-Trent laws would have permitted an annulment if either party had promised to marry a third party. After the 1533 establishment of the Church of England, only a prior marriage - including consummation - would have resulted in an annulment]. But I digress...

Penelope Rich does not come all that well out of the story. She is clearly a fascinating woman, one able to win one of the richest noblemen in the land, and the daughter of Lettice Knollys (a relative of Elizabeth II) and stepdaughter of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester. She is the love interest of Sir Philip Sidney (before his happy marriage to Frances) and the inspiration for some of the greatest love poetry in English. But despite all this, she comes across as curiously selfish, not terribly concerned with the effects of her adultery on her children by Rich, and unable to appreciate her good luck (relatively speaking). She constantly hankers after the fact that she might have been wife of both her lovers - Sidney and then Mountjoy. At the end, like her thrice-married (and equally adulterous) mother Lettice, she gets off lightly.

This book can be read well in conjunction with biographies of Essex, Leicester, Sidney, and of Elizabeth I herself. As a romance, it is interesting but it falls a bit short (for the reasons well-articulated by Elizabeth I and by Lord Rich in the book). A true-to-life story of adultery, fascinating as romantic historical fiction, but not an entirely satisfactory romance.

The three volumes that comprise this compelling saga begin with In the Hall of the Dragon King, and follow the fortunes of Quentin, who as a young temple acolyte, seeks to overthrow the evil loosed by Necromancer Nimrood and to save Mensandor, the realm of the Dragon King. In the second volume, The Warlords of Nin, Quentin once again holds the king’s destiny in his hands as the Wolf Star grows greater and the power of the Nin increases, spreading its black terror. In The Sword and the Flame, the final volume, Quentin reigns as Dragon King and faces an insidious attack of evil—from within himself—when Nimrood holds his son hostage.

I don't think I can add much beyond the in-depth review below, except to say that when I read the series some time ago, it captured my imagination enough for me to rate it a solid "I like it" #4 on the scale. I thought some of the spiritual concepts were a bit understated for a Christian Fantasy, but many prefer that. An event that I particularly remember was the search for the precious metal to fashion the sword, and also the sword's creation. The sword and its use in one certain battle still comes to memory. I wouldn't overlook this series if you are a Fantasy fan. It's worth the read.

1 out of 5 stars Save your time, save your money, save your dignity.......2004-01-16

It could be said in this trilogy's defense that this work was intended as mere pulp fantasy, intended to be read by readers looking for the familiar fix of a plot written by the numbers. However, to do so would be an insult to pulp authors everywhere. Lawhead entirely fails to create believeable characters or to develop the characters that he does create. The plot is so predictable that I am convinced the author looked for the most obvious possible developments. However, these faults could be forgiven - or at least ignored - if the exposition was even slightly worthwhile.

Unfortunately, its deficiencies in plot, character, world-building, and originality are complemented by quite possibly the worst writing I have ever seen. His descriptions substitute the reader's fantasy stereotypes for any actual use of adjectives. Perhaps he assumes that his entire audience is third graders. His language is consistently cliched and hackneyed. If you enjoy being hit in the face repeatedly with large bricks, this trilogy may be for you. If you actively hate literature, this trilogy is definitely for you. If you're looking for a simple but entertaining story without too many preconceptions, read the Belgariad.

4 out of 5 stars Lawhead "Lite" - not deep, but enjoyable........2001-07-04

If you are expecting something like Lawhead's profound and satisfying "Pendragon Cycle" when reading the "Dragon King" trilogy, prepare to be disappointed. This is the Lawhead "Lite" version, because it lacks the depth of description, character and emotion present in many of Lawhead's other works. Undoubtedly, this is more entertainment than the literary fiction of those offerings. But it would be unfair to criticize Lawhead too harshly for this, because this series was born in the infancy of his career as a writer. Readers familiar with the more polished and developed Lawhead as evident in his later work would do the man an injustice by measuring his first work by the incredibly high standard of his more mature efforts. As a series geared towards the level of teens rather than adults, and where the reader is not under the false expectation that it contains the majesty and depth of the "Pendragon Cycle", this is still a great read.

This first volume in the series! "In the Hall of the Dragon King" introduces us to young Quentin, who undertakes an important mission to rescue the Dragon King Eskevar from the traitorous Prince Jaspin and the evil necromancer Nimrood. The king can be rescued from the corrupt wizard only after Quentin and his friends make a perilous journey to the dreaded Karsh, the desolate home of Nimrood. In volume two of the series "The Warlords of Nin" Quentin has matured into a young adult, and must defend the royal castle and the kingdom over against the deadly Nin the Destroyer, with his four warlords, and thousands of soldiers. Victory is only possible when Quentin is armed with the enchanted sword Zhaligheer, but first Quentin must make a dangerous journey to search for a rare and fabled substance needed to make the sword. In "The Sword and the Flame", the third title in the series, the adult Quentin has assumed the throne and is busy building a temple dedicated to the Most High. But the evil necromancer Nimrood re!turns and collaborates with the defenders of the old gods against Quentin. The flame of the sword goes out, and the faith of the king and the hopes of the kingdom appear to be extinguished with it.

The strength of the series is the constant battle between good and evil, the powers of light and darkness. Quentin and his companions fight for freedom, justice and righteousness. Lawhead plainly intends this conflict to portray spiritual warfare. Quentin's enemies find their support in the pagan religions who worship the old gods, and employ the powers of sorcery, the occult and the dark arts. In contrast, victory of Quentin's kingdom is possible only with the help of the Most High God. The Christian symbolism is clearly evident: the conflict between the powers of good and evil is a picture of the great spiritual battle of the ages between God and Satan. Readers familiar with the battle images of Ephesians 6 will find the connections obvious. Quentin in particular plays a M!essianic role, by achieving deliverance as the Priest King, fulfilling prophecy in a manner much like Jesus Christ. Yet in contrast to these Messianic overtones of Quentin's role in an epic struggle, Lawhead also humanizes Quentin to the point where he is like us, a soldier in the battle rather than the Deliverer. Lawhead makes profound observations about personal faith, by showing that in the battle Quentin must learn to trust in the Most High. The Most High will be faithful in preserving the Kingdom, but his soldiers must be faithful in trusting and obeying him.

It is this depth of spiritual vision that makes Lawhead's prose all the more compelling and enjoyable. It is in the first place a story filled with medieval vistas and conflict - courageous knights in shining armour, flashing swords, evil wizards, deadly battles, heroic quests, and ancient chivalry. But especially the central place of the Most High God makes Lawhead's "Dragon King" trilogy so powerful and who!lesome - a picture of spiritual warfare, kings and kingdoms, prophets, dreams and visions, and above all faith in the Most High. It's not as deep and profound as his "Pendragon Cycle", but Lawhead "Lite" is still a very enjoyable read.

4 out of 5 stars A guide to the story of the Dragon King trilogy........2001-07-04

This first volume in the series "In the Hall of the Dragon King" introduces us to young Quentin, an assistant in the temple of Ariel, who forsakes aspirations of priesthood in order to undertake an important mission for the Dragon King Eskevar. This leads to a quest to save Eskevar from the hands of his evil brother Prince Jaspin, who harbours selfish ambitions to take over the crown. Quentin and his great war horse Balder are joined in this quest by the religious hermit Durwin, the renowned outlaw Theido, the prison warder Trenn, the good Queen Alinea, the mysterious nomad Toli, and the brave knight Ronsard. But Jaspin proves to be a mere pawn in the hands of the evil necromancer Nimrood, and it is from the clutches of this corrupt wizard that the King must be rescued. Quentin and company face perils of many kinds, including the dreaded Harriers, and a long journey through the lands of Mensandor and Elsendor to the dreaded Karsh, the desolate home of Nimrood.

In volume two of the series "The Warlords of Nin" Quentin has matured into a young adult and made his home in Dekra, far away from his beloved Bria. Along with his companion and friend Toli, Quentin heads back to the royal castle at Askelon at the urgent summons of King Eskevar, who detects an impending danger that threatens the empire. All the signs, including the bizarre and ever-brightening Wolf Star, point to a perilous time. The danger proves to be a serious one indeed: Nin the Destroyer, with his four warlords, and thousands of soldiers. Quentin and Toli escape from the clutches of one of the warlords along with the defector Myrmior, who turns out to be a most helpful ally. Myrmior's cunning and clever strategy does a great deal to slow the advance of the army of Nin threatening to overwhelm Askelon. But in the end, victory depends on the fulfilment of an archaic prophecy about a Priest King, who will bring deliverance armed with a mysterious sword known as the "Zhaligheer" or "Shining One". It seems the Quentin is the fabled Priest King, and in obedience to the prophecy, he undertakes a mission to the lost mines of Ariga, along with the armorer Inchkeith, to search for the rare and fabled lanthanil needed to make the sword. Will he accomplish his mission on time? Is he the one of whom the prophecy speaks?

In "The Sword and the Flame", the third title in the series, Quentin has assumed the throne, with Bria his queen. The kingdom firmly established, he is busy building the King's Temple, a temple dedicated to the Most High. And he is armed with the enchanted sword, whose flame symbolized the support of the Most High. But enemies old and new are fiercely opposed to Quentin's overturn of the old gods. The evil necromancer Nimrood returns to collaborate with the defenders of the old gods - the priests at the temple of Ariel, who see the construction of the King's Temple as a sign of the inevitable destruction of their own High Temple. Suddenly, the peace of Quentin's kingdom becomes overshadowed by darkness. His son is kidnapped, a close friend killed. Quentin must face open hostility from his enemies, even treachery from his own supporters. But worst of all the flame of the sword goes out, and the hopes for the kingdom appear to be extinguished along with it. The ensuing struggle makes this book the most emotional and introspective of the series, as it focuses on Quentin's loneliness, his deep, dark and total despair, which nearly extinguishes his faith. Lawhead treats this subject with raw and gripping emotion, precisely the ability later developed and fine-tuned that made the "Pendragon Cycle" so powerful. Perhaps even more compelling than the glory of a kingdom, is the tragedy of a fallen king, who is so distraught that he rejects the Most High and tumbles into the depths of despair. In the end, the tide turns when Quentin renews his faith. The climax is particularly powerful, with unforgettable scenes reminiscent of the confrontation on Mount Carmel between Elijah the prophet of the Most High and the prophets of Baal.

Each story can be read independently, since each volume introduces a new conflict which is resolved by the conclusion of the book. But the tales of the Dragon King trilogy are so exciting, that once you have read one, you'll want to read them all!

              4 out of 5 stars Good Books.......2001-01-11

It has been several years since I have read these books, but they are the ones that started me on Lawhead. Since then I have read almost every one of his works. That should say a bit about these. He is an excellent author and really knows how to go into Folklore and bring out a great story.

4 out of 5 stars In the Hall of the Dragon King.......2000-09-28

If you have ever read Stephen R. Lawhead, you will know that he is a great author with an epic imagination. This shines though in many of his books and "In the Hall of teh Dragon King" is no exception. It is a great epic about the coming of a boy that feels an urge yet doesn't know that it was destiny beaconing him forward. I can't wait to get the rest of the sereies though I have only one reason why I gave it a 4 stars and not 5. It went too fast. Though close to 400 pages....I felt that the plot was a bit rushed.

5 out of 5 stars An exciting and envolved plot.......1999-06-10

The twisting tale of a young temple acolyte as he grows up to become the Dragon King. With excellent Battle descriptions, a series of twists and, devastating scenes where hero's of old come to rest. This is a great book by Stephen Lawhead even if the characters are slightly too correct and polite. I wish there was another book to continue on!!

              4 out of 5 stars Awesome!!!!!.......2007-10-11

In the Hall of the Dragon King is a GREAT begining to a series. You, as a reader, instantly like the main characters and are thrown headlong into their quest for truth and the salvation of their kindgom. Lawhead shows that even in the first series he published, he already had that...that...I don't even know if words can describe it. Lawhead is one of my favorite authors and this book lives up to any and all expectations I had. It is worth any price Amazon can set.

5 out of 5 stars For Young Adults.......2007-09-16

I think you need to remember that this book's aimed for the young adult audience. If you've read Song of Albion, or Byzantium, or Hood and Scarlet, then you read this, you will notice the difference, and I think that's why some people are giving it only a few stars.

However, there's virtually no series I'd recommend more for young adults, especially who are into Fantasy.

2 out of 5 stars Uninspiring Christian Fantasy.......2006-06-12

As an avid fantasy lover and non-Christian, I found this book very disappointing. The plot is unoriginal, the characters uninspiring, and I felt cheated by the none-too-subtle religious propoganda -- I realized only after reading the book that the publishing company is all Christian literature. If you're looking for Christian fantasy -- hey, it's a limited genre, and this book isn't all bad. But if you're just looking for good fantasy -- look elsewhere.

2 out of 5 stars Could have been much better.......2003-07-04

I haven't read Lawhead's other works, but this was a big disappointment. The characters were shallow, the villains incompetent, the Protestant Christian symbolism too blunt, and the spelling and grammar atrocious. Whoever the editor was should be fired. The only redeeming aspect was a fairly original plot, but it is not enough to save the rest of the book.

5 out of 5 stars The Dragon King Trilogy is on of my favorite series!.......2002-03-09

15-years-old acolyte, Quentin is wakened by a commotion in the temple of Ariel one night. A very badly wounded knight had stumbled in to the temple. His name is Ronsard(he is one of my favorite characters) and he has an extremely important message for his Queen Alinea. Ronsard asks if anyone could go and give the message for him. Quentin agrees to go but he can no longer return to the temple. The knight tells him to go to a hermit named Durwin and to give the message without stopping. So, mounted on Ronsard's horse Balder, Quentin rides to Durwin's house. He meets Durwin and also Durwin's friend, Theido. Theido and Quentin rides to Askelon where the Queen was, but they are caught by the crafty coward, Prince Jaspin. The Prince is the King's brother and he wants to have the crown. Quentin escapes and goes to the Queen. The message he gave was that King Eskevar had been captured by the evil necromancer, Nimrood. Then, the Queen, Durwin, and Quentin meets Theido. He had escaped and together they ride to save the King. Quentin learns of a new God, the Most High and he turns away from Ariel and the other gods to worship the true one God. Durwin teaches him more about God on the way.

Can they rescue the King from Nimrood? Can they win the battle with Prince Jaspin's 100,000 men with their 10,000?

This is a wonderful Christian fantasy. The next one, "The Warlords of Nin" is my favorite in the Dragon King Trilogy.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I was expecting.......2007-09-03

This book was not at all what I was expecting from Stephen King. It is written like a fairy tale story. It took me a while to get into it, but once I got used to the writing style it was not bad. The characters where well written, and the story moves at a good pace. I found I did not get hooked on the story completely until about half way through, and then I could not put it down.
It helped me to put things in perspective when a friend told me that Stephen King wrote this book for his kid. A fairy tale of Princes, and dragons, and dark wizards, death and friendship. A story written by King that his child could actually be allowed to read :0)

                5 out of 5 stars I am the King.......2007-08-28

once again an amazing book from mr. stephen king. not at all like his other books but still very very good. Also unlike his other books there are no major plot twists or anything like that. Majority of the story is revealed to you in the first 100 pages. But it still keeps you on the edge of your seat waiting to see whats gonna happen next. Overall a great read.

                5 out of 5 stars Great Story.......2007-07-01

I'm not a huge fan of fantasy books but I couldn't put this one down. It's only the second fantasy book I've ever read (and loved). The first being, 'The Hobbit'.

5 out of 5 stars One of his best novels.......2007-06-14

I read this as a teenager some time ago and had fond memories of it being one of my favorite books of all time. I recently decided to read it again prior to re-reading the first three Gunslinger novels. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that I enjoyed it just as much the second time around. I strongly recommend this book to Dark Tower fans.

                5 out of 5 stars Me Likey.......2007-06-04

Not being a huge King fan--don't get me wrong, I don't dislike him, I just don't care for horror novels, I'm a sissy--I love this book. It's a departure from the aforementioned genre and the content delves into a more fantastic realm. I heard it was intended for his daughter at the time. I love all the details and descriptions--this is a great book for children/preteens, though I still love it (and I'm quite a bit older than a preteen...)Give it a read, it's a nice change from killer dogs and creepy sewer clowns.
