Beautifully designed A-Z of the totality of revolutionary politics. This brand new Crimethinc book is the action guide - the direct action guide. What are you waiting for?

Work related.......2007-09-24
A good book for refrence material for the HAZMAT courses I teach. If you are buying this with the intent to use the information be really careful because some of the information is flat out wrong and will get you hurt and it will also get you put on a few watch lists.
Doesn't deserve the title.......2005-04-29
The activities described in the book are, almost without exception, harmless (if sometimes illegal) pranks or eco-friendly home ec. Handing out subversive pamphlets to college kids? Painting over billboards? More energy-efficient stoves? Is this what qualifies as a disaster these days? Your "Rocket Stove" is not going to stick it to The Man, I'm sorry. Don't buy this expecting anything interesting -- maybe grade schoolers would get a kick out of it, but that's about it.
An indispensable manual of direct action.......2005-02-01
After a long wait, America's heirs to the Situationists come through with a wide-ranging, imaginative, and inspiring compendium of actions that people can take to challenge the status quo. Big and small, legal and il-, the 62 recipes run the gamut from dumspter-diving to banner drops, open relationships to locking down streets, monkeywrenching to coalition building. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the direct action tactics that have developed in anti-capitalist, anti-authoritarian circles in recent years.
One gripe-- the section on "undermining oppression" is a clumsy and unfortunate endorsement of the kind of identity politics that have so recklessly divided the left.
Book Description
Baking is a science. But who wants to spend hours in the kitchen experimenting?
Thankfully, Sarah Phillips does. She has discovered what causes baking disasters and shows bakers at all levels of expertise how to avoid them. With unique tips and exhaustively tested recipes, Baking 9-1-1 takes the guesswork out of baking and explains:
- How to make a cake that won't fall in the middle
- What it takes to bake a flaky piecrust
- The easiest way to prevent a cheesecake from cracking
- How to make the perfect chocolate chip cookie that's thick and chewy
- The trick to storing baked goods
- The answers to niggling questions such as "Does butter really need to be room temperature?" and "What is the difference between one cup flour sifted and one cup sifted flour?" among many others.
The recipes in Baking 9-1-1 solve bakers' most frustrating problems. They include an all-purpose pie dough, a lemon meringue pie that doesn't sweat, thick and rich chocolate ganache fudge sauce, no-fuss buttermilk biscuits, and dozens more. A Must Have Book for any Baker!.......2007-09-29
This is the single best book on baking tips that I have ever read!
Sarah Phillips explains every nuance about baking. From the chemical science of baking the ultimate chocolate butter cake to the time-saving ideas on rolling-out and constructing a lattice-top pie crust.
This book is chock-full of baking solutions, ideas, hints, tips and many very delicious and tasty recipes.
This is one cookbook I will never part with. I can always find the solution to a baking problem in this book. I only wish I had this book years ago.
I have also purchased several copies for gifts for the budding bakers in the family.
Also, check out Sarah's amazing site, the information, photos, recipes and support from Sarah and other bakers is priceless!
Must Have for Baking.......2006-08-10
I bought this book because I was just the average cook searching for a cookbook that would tell me what to do exactly and why. I learned so much from this book and now I consider myself a good baker. My family and friends and people I don't know want me to make them deserts. I consider this to be a great accomplishment and exactly what I was looking for. If you want to be a good baker buy this book you won't be disappointed and you will learn the proper way to do it. The baking911.com site is fantastic and if you want to know more ask Sarah. I've never met this woman, I consider her to be a good friend and a fantastic chef. She has done alot for all of us who are learning and explains it in layman terms. She even has a online school at baking911.com and I have taken the classes. A major plus. I believe this is the best cookbook I own and I have more than 50 and at the best price. You will find many pictures and more recipes at the web site. Baking Friend Mystie Richards Florida
baking wiz says this books has it all.......2006-07-14
I do a lot of baking and I'm always looking for a book that really nails what baking is all about. THIS IS THE BOOK! If you are also looking for such a book, look no further.
Big disappointment.......2006-07-09
I bought this book because of the great reviews and I am very disappointed with it. I was particularly interested in the Pastry and Yeast Breads sections: I was expecting a lot of good tips and a few basic recipes. In the pastry section the author gives general descriptions of pastry types, choux, puff pastry and phyllo dough, information easily available on the internet, and offers only one recipe for Pear Baklava. The bread section is even worse: nothing new in the description of the breads and 2 recipes for white sandwich bread and whole grain wheat bread. She forgot all the other kinds, from french to focaccia or pizza. I am sorry to say that I found this book useless and highly overrated. Not recommended.
That should read FIVE stars - sorry!.......2006-03-25
Okay, so I am getting older. But I do try to follow cake recipes TO THE LETTER because I believe that baking is truly chemistry. "Chocolate Frosted Fudge Layer Cake," the recipe, Step 2: "...combine flour and salt and set aside." Right. Did it. Followed the rest of the steps to the letter, or I think I did....the author said the batter would be thin...wow, was it ever! Popped the pans into the oven only to find the FLOUR AND SALT MIXTURE STILL SET ASIDE on my countertop...i.e., NOT in the cake! Obviously there was an error in the recipe in the book - one I should have spotted beforehand, maybe, but didn't.
I whisked the pans out of the oven, dumped the batter back into the mixing bowl, threw the flour mixture in and beat it as quickly as I could; threw it back in the pans and into the oven. Fortunately, despite my haphazard efforts, the cake rose beautifully and tasted great in the end.
This printing snag had been duly noted on Sarah Phillips' excellent website, addressed and rectified...unfortunately, I did not see it until after the fact.
I originally gave this book 3 out of 5 stars because of this...not the author's fault, but I felt I was reviewing the BOOK, not its author - and the book had a few problems. Like too many cookbooks, I have found, a few inaccuracies or omissions by the publishers can make a big difference...and it happens to the best of them. It's too bad we can't rate the accuracy of a cookbook's editing separately from the book as a whole...
...Now, in editing my original review, I wish I could add two more stars to the three that I gave it and make it five. The more I consider this book, I must say that without a doubt - publishing error(s) and all - it is still one I wouldn't want to be without in my kitchen...its baking tips, techniques and explanations are excellent. And, like Sarah Phillips' labour-of-love website by the same name, it is comprehensive and very easy to reference.
And speaking of the website (though this is a book review), it expands on this book very nicely...several times I have referred to it for advice ranging from proving yeast breads to storing a fondant-iced cake and the answers were really helpful and easy to access. Plus that is where you will find the corrections for the cake recipe that almost went wrong :-)
I don't know how many reviewers edit their reviews like this, but in the interests of fairness (and the pangs of guilt I will feel every time I reach for this book and/or go to the Baking911.com site) I am doing so. FIVE STARS and an apology.

A Wacky R. Crumb Experience.......2003-10-16
This looks like something I remember from my hallucinating days at a Grateful Dead concert. From what I've seen, I love it -- I may even have to buy a copy. Of course, I knew Penny back when she was drawing staid portraits and still-lifes with bananas and cherries, so this is quite a switch. It's like a return to the Zap Comix of my youth.
Book Description
Founded in 1951 by visionary textile designer Armi Ratia and her husband, Viljo, the Marimekko Corporation in Finland not only sparked a revolution in pattern making but also pioneered a new definition of fashion that embraced the entire home environment. This book-the first comprehensive study of Marimekko designs-presents more than one hundred examples of the exuberant Marimekko fashions and home furnishings that gave the company a definitive presence on the world design stage. The book considers the history of the company from its founding through today and examines Marimekko's impact on design in Finland and around the world. The company's most important designers, including Maija Isola and Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi, their contributions, and their stylistic development are also discussed. In addition, the book examines Marimekko home and office interiors and how they reflected the lifestyle envisioned in Armi Ratia's broad, radical definition of fashion.
Customer Reviews:
Finnish masters.......2005-06-08
This book will liberate you from your everyday's worries. Get carried away by the splendor of Finnish Marimekko, by travelling with them to Northern Europe. A place where people endure long dark winters to enjoy three months of summer-paradise. Always in an overwhelming nature, bound to make you feel a little lonely.
By concentrating on clothing and home-environment, Marimekko superbly reflects this lifestyle. With a distinctive link to the Sixties, by the way. Besides providing a thorough picture of this company's artistic whereabouts, this book leaves you in no doubt Marimekko ranks among the finest designs in the world. There's one afterthought, though: being utterly Scandinavian, one wonders if Marimekko appeals much to American taste.
a thorough tribute to a design giant.......2004-03-11
I just saw the last weekend of this show in New York at the Bard Center and it was inspired, to say the least. The book is the next best thing to being there if you are a Marimekko fan. It is a more thorough look at the company than the older title "marimekko phenomenon". The editor of this book, Marianne Aav (also the show's curator) was responsible for the 1998 show/book from the Bard Center on Finnish Modern Design. Marimekko's brave colors, shapes, and graphics are made more powerful, in my mind, by the fact that the final result appears so simple. While I mourn the lack of this in much of today's clothing/textile design, I think that the renewed excitement about Marimekko, and design in general, indicates that this is changing. There is a lot of exciting material coming out of Scandanavia and Finland by young designers right now, but Marimekko's influence on modern design cannot be underestimated. Their vision ranged beyond textiles into architecture as well, which the book illustrates. This exhibit & accompanying book have done a fine job at giving credit where it's due.

An inspiring collection.......2000-06-29
Many of the pieces in this book are currently on diplay at the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe NM; and if you happen to be in the area I recommend you visit. The presentation is as interesting and original as the pieces themselves. The current display is organized around the theme of Lewis Carroll's "Through the Looking Glass"; and is a unique and inventive way to arrange a museum collection. If you have any interest in art, and are curious about the original and interactive ways museums can show their pieces, you will enjoy your visit. Lloyd Cotsen and Neutrogena have a great and inspiring collection, and this book serves as a good overview.

A Response to all people whom read about The House of Versac.......2005-03-04
I think you all show read a little but more and pay attention to more than just the clothes in the books. Try to intepret what Gianni, Dona, Sonta, and Allegra were and are trying to bring out with their collezioni, couture, and black label. Aletier as well. They are not aficionados o aficianadas. It is not just a style as far as what is worn, it is a statement and impression of who you are, what you are made of, and what you stand for. Damn, now it is time to add some Sean John velour and sunglasses to my collection.

Gianni Versace.......2000-04-08
This is an excellent photography book, but the clothing in here is mostly from the 80's and not my favorite era in terms of fashion. There is some wonderful clothes, and some terrible clothes. The information is great, tells of inspirations and what the particular piece was based on. The best parts of this book are the photography and the information accompanying the photographs. I lovev Gianni's work, but some of the stuff in here is just not worthy... but it was the 80's, And I suppose it was stylish then. I'd recommend for any die hard versace fans.

Retrospective of costume in historical films.......2007-06-25
As you will gather from the title, "Hollywood and History" is essentially a review of the costumes worn in the great (and not-so-great) historical epics produced in Hollywood's salad days, with a side trip to look at the costumes of science-fiction films. Lots of interesting stuff here (such as a chart showing how men's and women's "looks" in hairstyling, makeup, and the like changed decade by decade), and the photos and illustrations, both color and in B&W, are first-rate. My only real quibble - and this is something that's basically out of the control of the authors, as this book was published to accompany a museum exhibit from some years ago - is that the book doesn't cover more modern movies. As I said, though, that's not really something the authors can go back and fix at this point, and if you keep that in mind, you'll enjoy this book. Recommended for any film costume student's library.
The movies got it wrong..........2000-10-07
This is a beautiful exhibition catalogue that shows how movies depict historical and SF costume. It is full of beatiful illustrations from the movies being discussed and also has examples of the actual costume worn in that movie.
What is very interesting is in the historical sections. You can clearly see how *wrong* these costumes are. Superfically they look right - but that's about it. Even 'gone with the wind' has it's problems.
There is also a section on SF movies and how the costuming in those are affected by what people are wearing at the time they are made. Out of this section the movies that seem to have stood the test of time the best are 'bladerunner' and 'flash gordon 1980'.
This is a very interesting book for people who are interested in the movies and costume.
Book Description
The bedcoverings in the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA) and Old Salem collections cannot be described by one term alone. This book features thirty-nine quilts, coverlets, and counterpanesmost of which were made and used in the Souththat represent the richness and variety of bedcoverings from the late eighteenth century through the nineteenth.
Early bedcoverings can be studied from a variety of perspectives, including those gleaned from such documents as newspapers, wills and inventories, and family histories. In an introduction to this beautifully illustrated catalogue, Paula W. Locklair explores what bedcoverings were called, the techniques and fabrics used to make them, and their value in the households of the period. Whether embroidered, patchwork, appliqud, or woven, the bedcoverings highlighted here offer new insights into the lives, talents, and imaginations of American women in the early South.
Old Salem encompasses the restored Moravian town of Salem and MESDA, the only museum devoted to the decorative arts of the early South. Both are located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Customer Reviews:
beautiful and informative.......2005-08-15
although this is not a huge book, it contains a wonderful collection of late 18th through 19th century bdecoverings, from woven to embroidered to quilted. the examples are generally beautiful as well as historically interesting.
the introduction is brief but informative, defining the various terms used for bedcovers over time and including fascinating evidence of the value owners put on their textiles. there are also short biographies for the makers of some of the bedcovers, and even portraits in whatever medium was contemporary. also included are a few photos of textile tools, some handwritten weavers' draughts (and cloth woven from them), and a handwritten notebook for embroidery stitches.
the only drawback for me is the book's brevity--i wanted more, more history and biography, and details of the bedcovers, more of the collection.
quilters, weavers, those interested in textile and social history will find this book informative, enjoyable and inspiring.
