Book Description
There's a girl in the hotel lobby. Long legs in a red dress. Scar at the edge of her mouth, body like a knife. I buy her a drink and wake up with staples in my side. "Don't worry," she says. "You only need one."
Disgraced junkie cop turned apocalyptic antihero Phineas Poe emerges from a psych ward on Christmas Eve and tumbles for beautiful predatory Jude, streetwise assassin turned organ thief. After one night together, she cuts him open, leaves him to fate. Reborn in a bath of ice, Phineas tracks Jude from the back alleys of Denver across the Texas desert for a violent showdown that leaves them on the run to Mexico and the debauched playgrounds of California's elite. Descend into a nightmare realm where every act of perversion finds willing disciples. Enter a world of brutal blood sport, murderous role play, existential snuff films. Lines between victim and accomplice blur past recognition only to be redrawn according to violent whim. The myth of Orpheus is deconstructed on a razorblade as Phineas and Jude chase each other through a hell of their own making.
PHINEAS POE is equal parts noir romance, revenge fantasy, suicide pact, urban myth exploded, and nihilistic tragedy.
Customer Reviews:
Decent, entertaining, but .......2007-08-16
As the back cover of the book states, these three novels read like a feverish dream. The writing doesn't include typical grammar structure like quotation marks but instead flows very smoothly as if from another world. There is rampant drug/alcohol usage which sometimes makes things seem a little depressing, but otherwise the stories are entertaining.
Overall, the book is an easy read. It's entertaining but not altogether fulfilling. Hell's Half Acre was probably the best, mainly because it made some sort of sense. The characters from the first two novels didn't really seem to be based in any kind of coherent reality.
Just my .02. I walked away after finishing the book saying "What was the point?"
Devastating Beauty.......2007-07-15
There are some authors who, when you read them, can crush your confidence in your own writing. They are so perfectly in control of their craft, their prose so utterly devastating in its perfect beauty, that you put down the book and say, "Well, crap. I'll never be THAT good." Will Christopher Baer is one such author.
That his prose is not only beautiful, but can also be dark, witty, and down right violent, only heightens the pleasure for me.
There are sentences in this collection that will make a fellow writer stop to catch their breath. It's the equivalent of going to MoMA and standing in front of a masterpiece.
I await Godspeed with the utmost of anticipation.
The Phineas Poe collection is a winner.......2007-05-10
I found all three books fun to read, intellectually fascinating, and a bit addictive. A must read for any noir fan, and an intrigue for any reader. Unusual storyline, characters, and plot twists. Will Baer has a unique writing style that adds to the flavor of the novels. Excellent service on the part of Amazon, aswell.
Strange happenings..........2007-02-20
So Phineas is an ex-cop turned junkie because someone took his liver. Weird plot, weird stories. The collection is of all 3 Phineas Poe novels by Will Christopher Baer. While I personally am not into the somewhat graphic sex scenes, they make things a little more interesting at times. If you're into crime, sex, drugs, and having your kidney cut out, along with going into a strange world of sex and overall oddities, check this out. It's a good read through and through.
Not Bad, Not Brilliant.......2007-02-06
I thought this book was going to be phenominal. And, to be fair, it started out with just the right amount of dark atmosphere and stylistic flair that I thought this book would surely be a must read. Unfortunately, after the excitement of Baer's words wear off, there isn't much actual plot to come by in this novel. Furthermore, whatever plot can be found is sometimes unexciting and hard to follow, allbeit interesting. I can say I'd recommend the first of this trilogy, Kiss Me Judas, to almost anybody, what with it's pinache and storyline. Both of these elements remain new and fresh throughout the whole book, and are the strongest they feel throughout all three of Baer's novels. However, once you get two books deep, his style and often insane plots feel more worn out than new and exciting.

Lt. Avis Schorer served with an evacuation hospital in North Africa and Italy. Heartache, loneliness, and danger were constant companions while caring for the severely wounded. She and 25 others were the first to land on the Anzio beachhead. Constantly bombarded by German shells and bombs, the hospital on the beach was soon dubbed Hell s Half Acre.

A Nurse's Perspective.......2003-12-15
The book, A Half Acre of Hell, expresses a view that isn't often seen. The view is that of a World War II combat nurse. It is written by Avis Schorer based on her first hand account of the war. This book gives in great detail where a nurse traveled during the war and what places she got to see. It is made interesting through the use of major historic events connected to where the author was at that time. Also, the book is interesting because the reader gets to see many of the daily aspects of war, not just an overview. This book would not be a good read for some one expecting a war book based around tactics or combat, although some are included. It is more a journal of events. The book is easy to follow and good for anyone interested in a nurse's account of the war.
Inspiring.......2003-08-29
This book was a definite eye-opener. I read it at age 17, and was aghast at the horrors of Anzio and inspired by the nurses who served there. This book gave me a glimpse of the true nature of nursing, and largely because of this book, I entered nursing school a year later. I'm now a Registered Nurse, and this book has an honored spot on my bookshelves. A definite must-read.
An unflinching narrative of courage.......2003-07-26
A Half Acre Of Hell: A Combat Nurse In WW II is the personal memoir and eye-witness testimony of Avid Schorer, a woman who served the U.S. Army Nurse Corps from March 1942 to January 1946. The military hospital where she served gained the ill nickname "Hell's Half Acre" due to its bombardment by Axis forces. An unflinching narrative of courage, strength, mercy, and service amidst the terrible toll of war itself, A Half Acre Of Hell is a strongly recommended addition to academic, and community library World War II Military History collections and personal reading lists.
Nurse and Vet agree:this is a victory.......2002-01-09
My wife is an Registered Nurse and I am a combat veteran. I bought this book for my wife to take on our trip to Hawaii. She could not put it down, and later, neither could I. From both our life experiences, this book rang true and was gripping. Having been written by a Minnesotan made it all the more enjoyable.
vivid and realistic description.......2000-11-17
The book presents a realistic description of the extreme hardships endured by Army Nurses in Italy during WWII.

Poe Takes Us To Hell .......2005-12-15
Hell's Half Acre a truly wonderful novel, after what I believe was a bit of a sophmore slump with Penny Dreadful.
But I Hell's Half Acre, Baer seems to once again capture that non-urgent nihlist qualty that our man Phineas possesses. Poe is the ultimate nihlist because instead of preaching about the virtues or sitting around debating the philosophical implications, he simply lives it. Course I guess most Junkies are and do just that. Or in our case a Pseudo-Junkie.
Jude makes her return and we see that maybe, just maybe Jude isn't as tough as she thinks she is. And there is the possibility that she has finally gone over the deep end of sanity and likely isn't coming back, but instead falling deeper and deeper into the abyss of a psychological blackhole.
Hope this helped, probably didn't if you haven't read the 1st 2 novels. Thanks for reading.
A fractal depiction of nothing.......2005-05-22
Kiss Me, Judas was strangely compelling...odd, off-beat, uniquely different. The writing deftly conveyed the main character's dissociation, which helps explain his irrational behavior and pathological acceptance of the psychopaths around him. In Hell's Half Acre, the same approach continues, but it begins to wear thin. Will Phineas ever do anything rational, will he ever do anything interesting, will he ever stop descending into a meaningless, random walk of a pathetic loser in a psychotropic narrative? Unfortunately it appears not.
Phineas Poe returns.......2004-11-09
Will Christopher Baer has created his best work yet with Hell's Half Acre. The hallucinatory quality which other reviewers of the book have talked about is indeed a strange and compelling theme that permeates Baer's work. The reader, like main character Phineas Poe, may find themselves wondering what is real and what is just another twisted part of a dream. Baer's quick pace writing makes the book a very fast read, and the twists and turns help to keep things flowing down the increasingly curvy road that Baer has created. The book is so well written that the previous two novels concerning Phineas Poe: Kiss Me, Judas and Penny Dreadful, are not required reading for enjoying Hell's Half Acre. However, I would recommend picking up all three books. I look forward to what Baer has in store for us in the future.
great end to the trilogy.......2004-10-13
Being the third book of the Phineas Poe trilogy I was worried that Baer wouldn't be able to end such a great ongoing saga in a manner that pleased. Luckily I was wrong. This book is a perfect ending for the trilogy, which started with Kiss Me, Judas and moved on to Penny Dreadful. I would ahve to say this is my favorite of his three and definitely the msot exciting.
I read this book at work, a gas station job, and I read it in about 4 sittings. I remember in the first 25 pages I went "jesus christ this book is amazing" Then around page 50 I went "my god this book is so ####ed up" and those two seemed to repeat throughout the entire book.
All in all I loved this book and I would strongly reccomend it to anyone who enjoys writes like palahniuk, clevenger, bret easton ellis, stephen king, and neil gaiman.
Good review from a not-so-good reviewer.......2004-10-13
As stated above, I'm generally not good at giving reviews. I try, but somehow I can never seem to do a story the justice it deserves.
This is one such example of my incompetence; but don't let that dissuade you from reading this book. It is worth every second of your life you choose to expend to reading it.
First of all, the storyline is strong and there aren't many distractions at all. Baer's first two contained scenes that may have been confusing, but this one is tight and straightforward without losing any of its poetic appeal. If you've read the other two, Kiss Me Judas and Penny Dreadful, you are well aware of Baer's fantastic prose. This book is not lacking.
It isn't as dark as the other two, but there are still many taboo subjects within these pages to keep someone who craves those things entertained. Snuff films. Sex. Amputation fetishes. A rape scene. And none of this, as per Will Christopher Baer's style, is gratuitous. Not like Bret Easton Ellis. I'd say this story is as good as it gets if you're looking for great story, elegant writing, dark content without being too graphic, pacing, and perfect climax/ending. This isn't one of those endings that leave you wondering what you missed. It will leave you wanting more.

My hometown.......2007-07-17
It could be your hometown too, if you grew up in the west. A good history,(well-researched)that pulls no punches about the unsavory characters and rough life of the old west.
Best book on Old West Fort Worth ever!.......2007-01-24
Without a doubt, the best book on the old west history of Ft. Worth, naming names, and places where the action was. Selcer covers it all, from the smallest saloons and big outfits, to the big name gamblers and shady ladies, to the reformers. Locations, descriptions...get ready for a trip in time, you won't be able to put it down. Yeeeeee -Haaawwwww! Lovin it!!
Foat Wuth Ah Lov Yew.......2002-05-18
Selcer has produced an historical account of Fort Worth's early years, and the relationship of vice to its growth. I found the book difficult to put down until I had read each sordid detail.
You want the truth about the good old days, back when times were simpler? Selcer will give it to you, in spades, enjoy them, and reflect on the lives of our great grandparents.

Book Description
Hell's Half Acre is the story of the people who lived and worked in Turner Valley, western Canada's first commercial oilfield, located southwest of Calgary. Beginning in 1914, the oil fields attracted thousands of workers from across North America to the drilling rigs, processing plants, and the pipeline crews that dug the first trenches. In addition to the beginnings of an oil industry, Turner Valley provided Alberta with a rich historical legacy of epic proportions, along with a cast of very colourful characters.
Drawing on contemporary accounts and dozens of interviews with Turner Valley pioneers, as well as probing the vast visual history of archival photographs, David Finch captures the life and times of an exciting era in Alberta history.
Imagine natural gas flares so plentiful and powerful that night turned into day and the glowing sky could be seen from Calgary. The smell of sour gas and its deadly effects were a constant danger, as were the primitive work conditions associated with the early years of oil exploration. But on the workers toiled, constructing massive drilling rigs out of huge timbers, working day and night in a relentless search for black gold. The Second World War brought an unprecedented level of urgency and tension to Turner Valley when the national treasure became a military target.
These were fascinating times, and in Hell's Half Acre the people, the companies, the booms, and the busts are all revealed in entertaining detail.
