Book Description
Sarah Woolson has always dreamed of becoming a lawyer. The trouble is, in the San Francisco of 1880, polite society believes it is willful and unfeminine for a young lady to concern herself with such things. Undeterred, and confident of the legal education that her judge father has given her, Sarah uses her brains and a little subterfuge to finagle her way into a prestigious law firm. Her first client is a lovely young society matron accused of stabbing to death her wealthy but abusive husband. Sarah is sure of her client's innocence, but the revelation of the woman's secret lover may make that innocence impossible to prove. When four more victims fall prey to the killer's knife, Sarah fears she has bitten off more than she can chew. Buck-ing her boorish employer and the judicial system, Sarah finds herself embroiled in shady legal maneuvers, a daring China-town raid, a secret and very scandalous sex club, and a powerful and dangerous tong lord in the city's Chinese district. Murder on Nob Hill is an irresistible blend of history, romance, and murder.

MYSTERY FANS, THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ!!.......2007-09-07
This book had me hooked from the very first page! What a great read. The characters are so well drawn I felt like I knew them and truly cared what happened to them. NOB HILL is fast-paced and filled with surprises. Despite the way the book moves right along, Tallman manages to give a strong feeling of being in San Francisco in that time period. You can almost feel and taste the fog, and hear the clang of the cable cars.
I loved the fact that Tallman treats the Chinese of the city with such sympathy and admiration. I have friends who live in Chinatown, but still I learned all kinds of new things about how that section of town must have been in the 1880s. I researched several sections of the book because I thought the Chinatown raid Tallman describes was so fantastic. Low and behold, she'd painted an extremely accurate picture of these raids -- which truly did happen then!! I love an author who does her homework!!
Way to go, Shirley. I can't wait to read the next book in the series!!
A Must Read for Historical, Murder Mystery Fans.......2007-08-30
MURDER ON NOB HILL by Shirley Tallman is a fun, fast-paced book. Sarah Woosley, the main character, is a fiesty, smart, "liberated" 1880's woman in San Francisco. The story takes one to many famous SF landmarks and gives a realistic portrayal of the difficulties women faced in society & the professional work place at the time. My favorite books are murder mysteries and this one had all my favorite elements - a strong heroine, a sense of humor, historical references and likeable main characters who aren't perfect.
I am looking forward to reading the next books in the series!
Couldn't Put It Down.......2007-08-28
Facing the obstacles of a woman entering the legal profession in 1880
San Francisco, this is a fast moving introduction of a resourceful, clever & tenacious woman lawyer. It is a real page turner.
THIS BOOK IS A FAST-MOVING, FUN, TERRIFIC HISTORICAL MYSTERY!!!.......2006-07-27
I don't know where Patricia Ann "Bookmark" is coming from. Did she read the same book I did?
MURDER ON NOB HILL is anything but slow-moving and boring. I thought it was a terrific historical novel. Not only did it move FAST, but the author kept me guessing about the identity of the killer until the very end. I've lent this book to lots of my mystery-lover friends, and they all agree with me that Sarah Woolson is the best new mystery character to come along in years! She's intelligent, fun, clever, out-spoken and dedicated to helping the underdog. I don't know how Patricia the "Bookmark" could say she's "spoiled". How can you call someone spoiled who's willing to give their life to make sure you get justice in a court of law? I thought she was anything BUT spoiled! (Sorry, but the "Bookmark's" review really got me fuming.)
I've also read the second book in the series, THE RUSSIAN HILL MURDERS, and I think it's also SUPER! And in the Russian Hill book, Sarah actually goes to court to defend a man accused of murder. I can't wait to read the new Sarah Woolson mystery, hopefully VERY SOON! Keep 'em coming, Shirley! And don't pay any attention to Patricia the "Bookmark". You've got a red-hot mystery series going here.
I forgot to mention that I was born and raised in San Francisco, and lived there until I got married. That's another great thing about Shirley Tallman's Sarah Woolson Series. She's really got the heart of San Francisco down pat! MURDER ON NOB HILL is by far one of the VERY BEST HISTORICAL MYSTERIES I've read in a long, long time!!!
Don't even bother with this book.......2006-07-22
Set in San Francisco in 1880, I thought this book was going to be a murder/mystery mixed with some history. WRONG. This book was so slow, and just couldn't seem to get going. I've read other murder mysteries set in the same time period, that were fast paced and action packed. This book was a big disappointment.

Gripping sequel!.......2006-07-12
Stalking Darkness is the gripping sequel to Luck in the shadows.
Though somewhat darker than its predecessor, it is every bit as impossible to put down. Lynn Flewelling's characters are back in full force, and she portrays their various hardships and comradeship in a moving and powerful way.
Things begun in the first book come to a head in this one. It really is not to be missed.
Book Description
Anne Bishop's critically-acclaimed Black Jewels Trilogy is the saga of a young but still-innocent Queen more powerful than even the High Lord of Hell-and the three sworn enemies determined to win her and gain a prize that could be terrible beyond imagining...
Customer Reviews:
A Snarly Review.......2007-09-25
If I had to sum up this book in one word it would be "disappointing". Ms. Bishop creates a beautiful hierarchy of power with the Blood and drawing their power from Jewels, the delicate psychic roadways of the Winds, and an interesting take on death with the Demon Dead and Guardians. The geography of the different lands, the different races of creatures that occupied them, and the involvement of the Kindred were all wonderfully detailed and fresh. These aspects of the story are fascinating, well developed, and highly imaginative, and I truly wish the actual storyline could live up to this promise.
In contrast of the terrific world she created, Ms. Bishop's characters could not be any more two-dimensional and tiresome. For all of her attempts to write "Dark Fantasy" and to challenge traditional images of hell/darkness (with names like Saetan, Daemon, and Lucivar) she creates some pretty standard, dull heroes and villains. No one hero is capable of doing anything wrong--Jaenelle most of all. I don't think I've read a heroine this mind-numbing in a long time. For a story like this to work, there needs to be actual, palpable danger for the heroine and the heroine's world. There was no question or danger here--Jaenelle was all powerful, pure hearted, and of course could overcome the simple-minded evil Queens. Hardly scintillating material.
So far as writing skills go, I am entirely done with the word "snarl". There are other adjectives to describe guttural noises.
Even on a romance front, I was disappointed. Daemon, the only true attempt at a multidimensional character, felt like a washed-out letdown by Book 3. There was some nice tension from the first book--I enjoyed Daemon's struggle--but it led to absolutely no payoff. When Witch and he finally get it on, it's almost laughable.
In short, the whole story felt contrived. Ms. Bishop creates dark scenes (like rape or murder) with no real consequence (everyone is *really* ok), an entirely dull love story, and "danger" without there really being any threat.
Ms. Bishop is the true Sadi here--these books give the ghost of promise and tease the reader seductively...only to find the results flaccid and leaving the reader completely unfulfilled.
A (generous) two and a half-stars.
A read so fascinating that I had to go there twice... in a row--.......2007-09-23
I recently stumbled onto this particular genre. And I can't believe how lucky I am. Where have I been all my life? It's fun. It's fantastic. It's absolutely amazing to me that someone can create an entire reality like this.
Anyway. I read this particular book from cover to cover and then, for the first time in my life, I turned right back to page 1 and started over. It is that good.
Black Jewels-good read.......2007-09-13
A rich world with interesting characters and a really fresh use of magic--beyond wands and wizards.
Amazing!!!.......2007-08-31
This book is Amazing. The very first paragraph caught me and the book never let go. I am an avid reader, of all books, and anymore it has become increasingly difficult to find a book with the power to grab your attention in the first 100 pages let alone the first paragraph. I will not sum up the book for you; my only advice would be to buy the book. The best way to describe this book is "All Encompasing."
Wonderful........2007-08-27
While I cannot hope to write as graceful a review as every other person before me has, I will try to tell you what I can about this book, and why is should be part of your collection.
The book (though there are actually three combined into one lovely volume) is about a very original world. I won't delve too deep into it, because part of the fun is figuring it out as you go, getting all the tidbits and making your own dreams of it. But, this world, this is what grabbed me the most. It's not like all the other fantasy books I've read; where there's always the set 'bad guy' and the 'good guys' and oh woe is me, someone must save us all.
While that concept is present in this book, it is not drawn out and used as the only tagline. There are so many other pieces to this great piece of writing!
Beyond the world, there are the characters. The deliciously real characters who I myself end up crying for, and getting angry about. Anne Bishop really draws you in and you start to know them so well... there are so many things about them, you feel like you could walk past them on the street. They do things that you think they would do, that you know is what that character would want to do. It is all very well done, gracefully, and well-fleshed so that they are believable, likable, and in some cases, absolutely despicable.
The plot is wonderfully twisted. There are so many strands of it that are to be pieced together, it's like a treasure hunt. And each chapter that gives you another lead, another piece... it's so lovely. And then a few things click, and you mentally go 'ooooh, that's why he did that!' And the way all the conflicts meet up in the end, how everything comes together so well; it's a piece of art.
And the romance, of course. My boyfriend stuck out his tongue and refused when he'd heard me mention that, though I know he was reading it when I slept... but it is a focal point. Enough that women will swoon, but not enough, I think, to turn men away from reading and enjoying this book.
With all the different characters, situations, and happenings in this book, there will surely be a thing for you to love and connect with, something to draw you in. If you give it a chance, I can assure you, you will not be disappointed. So... read some more reviews, think it over, and then do it, and enjoy reading about the life of the SaDiablo line, and all those who are drawn into their plight... :)

Book Description
The exquisite, colorful Japanese woodblock prints that represent the art of Ukiyo-e first flourished in 17th-century Edo (now Tokyo). Today these "pictures of the floating world" are the most popular form of Japanese art. This elegant book takes a fresh look at Ukiyo-e, showcasing a never-before-published trove of Japanese prints, drawings, and books from the collection of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.
Known masterpieces by such names as Hiroshige and Hokusai stand alongside rare and unusual works. Colors are exceptionally vivid, in part because the art has never been exhibited and is rarely handled. The beauty of the book will delight art lovers, while the cutting-edge scholarship and unusually comprehensive bibliography will also excite the specialist and collector.

a first-rate addition to any Japanese art library.......2001-11-26
Writing on Edo-period Japanese prints tends to be dominated by studies of single artists, print series by single artists, and chronological histories. Against this background, "The Floating World of Ukiyoe: Shadows, Dreams, and Substance," produced in conjunction with an exhibition, is a most welcome contribution. Here the emphasis is on showcasing a diverse and rarely seen collection--the woodblock prints and woodblock-printed books of the Library of Congress-- and on presenting expert essays that put the genre of "ukiyoe" in a broad aesthetic and social context. Added bonuses include such features as the "raking light" photograph on page 118, which illustrates the effects created by print embossing. "The Floating World" has been superbly designed by Abrams and well edited. It is worth noting too that the index has been prepared with exceptional care. Meanwhile, the bibliography--which covers 309 items and runs more than 20 pages--is a wonderful guide to woodblock-printed books in the Library of Congress: for scholars of Japanese art, culture, and publishing, this alone will justify acquisition of this book.

Great Drawings.......2000-07-05
Like I said, the drawings are great, but the story, despite creative, is not that great, especially the end, wich is predictable, very predictable. If you expect Spawn to show up, it's best if you buy Blood And Salvation, in this one the main characters are two lesbian women.

Terse Vivid Language Shines Through.......2007-03-26
This book, which serves as my introduction to Jory Sherman, reads like a detective story out of the old west. I mean that in the best sense. The writing style throughout this books shines beyond nearly every Western I've ever read. I don't know why I didn't notice this auther before (since he's been writing for years), but he's amazing. Descriptive language in the book such as "The Colt bucked in his hand as it exploded with orange flame, belching out golden fireflies of burnt powder..." paint pictures like few Westerns. Though I haven't yet reached the last page of the story, I had to say what a rare work of fiction this is. I will most definitely begin reading other works by this author.
