5 out of 5 stars THE JOY OF RADIO STILL LIVES!!.......2007-01-25

It continues to be a microcosum of the world at that time, complete with Perti wine commercials, war bonds, GAS RATIONING, SUGAR, AND EATING STEAK AGAIN, and most excellent performances of Rathbone and Bruce. Immortal writing, portrayal of Holmes and Watson.!!!!
Don't Miss a single episode.!!!

5 out of 5 stars Radio is forever.......2005-11-02

Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce are well known for their Sherlock Holmes films, which were produced by universal. An interesting fact is that the universal contract provided that each week these two men could have the day off. On this day, they would go into the radio studios of the Mutual Broadcasting System, where they would give two performances of the same show. Remember, in those days, there was no global Communications Network as we know it today and soul, two performances were necessary; one for the East Coast and one for the west. This was something that these two professionals were very used to. Listening to these shows, one realizes just for professional Rathbone and Bruce really were. These shows were recorded live, with no editing for mistakes. In radio, if you made a mistake, you simply had to keep going. You had to know the material backwards and forwards because the studio audience was counting on you to transport them to 18th century London, far away from the news of the war. At home, there were other drives, Peter drives, and, price ceiling. But for one day a week, Americans could forget about all that and travel with Holmes and Watson, as they undertook another case filled with murder, industry, and intrigue at the turn of the sentry. And Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce acted as tour guides to this adventure. Now at last , these wonderful adventures have been released on CD so that people of my generation, who were not know all lucky enough to be born during this time radio broadcasts were a staple of american entertainment, can now enjoy them. These shows providing ample evidence that dramatic radio is not dead after all. Dead,? No, radio is forever

5 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Pastiche.......2000-12-17

Although Edith Meiser was the most prolific author of Holmes radio pastiches, the team of Dennis Green and Anthony Boucher was the best. This collection contains two excellent stories from the pens of Green and Boucher. In "Murder in the Cashbah", Holmes and Watson travel to Africa to ferret out a man falsely accused of murder. "The Tankerville Club" is based upon a case which Conan Doyle briefly mentions in one of the "Conanical" stories. Holmes saves a young man's reputation by exposing a cardshark.

    4 out of 5 stars A mature-themed d20 product done right.......2003-10-28

There are a lot of d20 setting supplements on the market for the 3rd Edition of Dungeons & Dragons. So many in fact that the average DM is faced with a perplexing array of choices. Most supplements are of the sort that will cause the DM to think, "This has some interesting ideas in it. I might be able to incorporate some of them into my current campaign, or a future campaign." Some supplements will cause the DM to think, "This is great. I want to use this for my next campaign." A rare few cause the DM to think, " Oh my God! I've got to find a way to use this in my current campaign, right now."

For me, Sword and Sorcery's "Shelzar: City of Sins" definitely falls into that last category. As I was reading through it, I kept thinking, "I've got to get my players into this city. They are going to freak. This will be so much fun to play in. They will love it."

Even if you don't use Sword and Sorcery's Scarred Lands setting, Shelzar is one of those rare city supplements that you have to find a spot for in your current campaign. Place it in an area just off the edge of your campaign map; teleport the party to the other side of the planet; have them discover an interdimensional gate. But find a way to get them to Shelzar, and fast!

Having said that, I must caution you that Shelzar will not be appropriate for all groups. It is a very mature-themed product. If it was a movie, it would easily have an R rating, and possibly an NC-17. Shelzar is probably the ultimate fantasy city of decadence, debauchery, and indulgence. It's like Las Vegas, Chicago and Berlin of the Roaring 20s, New Orleans during Mardi Gras, Rio de Janeiro during Carnival, Cancun during Spring Break, and Bangkok all rolled into one

Despite it's subject matter, however, "Shelzar: City of Sins" is presented in a very non-sensationalistic manner. It deals with mature themes in a matter-of-fact, non-offensive, non-exploitive fashion. It gets its point across without graphic descriptions, titillating illustrations, or in-your-face attitude. This is how mature-themed D&D products should be done.

While overall I love this product, there are two things, which keep me from giving it five stars. First, the maps of the city. There are only two, and they aren't very big, each barely half a page. One map shows the various districts of the city. These are rendered in shades of gray, so if you use a copier to blow them up, the details become lost. The other map has numbered key locations, which correspond to text descriptions in Chapter Three: The City. Except some of the locations on the map don't match up with the right district in the text descriptions. For example, the description for the shop of Karshi the Tailor is included with locations found in The Souk. But the map clearly shows his shop is not in The Souk, but in The Maze, and closer to The Pezwahri than The Souk. It's very disappointing that this product doesn't have a large pull--out map which can be spread on the table during play so the characters can keep up with where they are and where they want to go. At least a bigger, full--page map that the DM could copy and use without having to enlarge it. Other city supplements include these types of maps, and I think not having one in this product is criminal. Maybe it was done to keep the cost down, or maybe Sword and Sorcery felt there wasn't room to fit in a bigger map. I think there is some material that could have been cut out in favor of a larger map, and the product would have been better.

The other complaint is the absence of details on the Shelzari eroticist prestige class. There are some key NPCs described in Chapter Four: People of Shelzar which have levels in this prestige class. But the class is found in another product, "Players Guide to Wizards, Bards and Sorcerers." The text advises DMs to ignore those PrC levels if the other product is not available, but why rob the characters of that which makes them unique to the setting? There is another prestige class, the Shelzari knife-fighter, which is detailed in the product. This PrC helps give the setting some of its special feel. The eroticist PrC would have done this as well. Again, there was some material which could have been left out in favor of the eroticist PrC, and the product would have been better.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic work, one annoyance.......2002-12-27

Of all the official and third-party expansions that have come out since the release of 3e, I have to rate this as my #1 favorite as both an indespensible reference and a fun read.

Although written for the very-specific "Scarred Lands" world, most of what can be used directly or adapted easily to your own world. In fact, it is much more adaptable than most other works I've found for 3E or other systems. Like any expansion, you will need to consider the impact of items and spells to your campaign, as some of what is presented is quite powerful.

The highlight of the book is the descriptions of spells and items. The level of detail, the thought behind the entries, and the insight it gives you into the Scarred Lands is just fun reading, whether you ever use the item or not.

The book has the added bonus of being inexpensive for a hardcover game supplement, and especially compared to Wizards' official expansions.

The only annoyance of the work is the magic items. There is no "cost to create" numbers associated with any work, and while you can rederive this using the standard 3e tables, it's exclusion deprives you of the ability to spot-check the power of an item, relative to other items in the book.

    ...

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have Relic For Any DM.......2002-01-07

The book, Relic and Rituals has to be one of the most well done 3rd party game books out for the Dungeons & Dragons, 20 game system.

The book adds many intersting and worth while spells to acheive for any arcane or divine spellcaster. Wizards, Clerics, Paladins, Rangers and Bards or any other character can benefit from this book as it can be incorperated into any game world.

The material in the book overall is excellent and I cant stress enough that it is a MUST BUY, it also adds new spell option called "Rituals". While very interesting I have not found a great use for this; yet.

The prestige classes are small but was very pleased with the quality of there prestige classes. One Example is the "Blood Witch" which sacrifices his own or his enemies blood for more powerful spells.

Overall I give this book 5 stars for spell design, magic item, and overall usefullness. No matter what game setting you play; IT CAN BE INCORPERATED IN ANY SETTING which makes it worth while no matter what you might use or not use from the book. Dont be dissapointed with the mildly lower quality book printing and detailed art compared to Wizards of The Coast, as big money and flashy design, cant compare to R&Rituals useful content.

Honestly to say this should be on every DM's game shelf. A must buy. PERIOD.

    4 out of 5 stars decidedly NOT a relic.......2001-10-12

top notch work, typical of Swords and Sorcery Studio. This adds a corpus of new spells and magic items, plus new rules about a form of ritual magic. this can definitely add a plus to most campaigns (and certainly mine). The only drawback may be that the whole work is keyed to the authors "scarred lands" campaign setting, possibly needing some work to adapt it to another campaign world

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Bag of Tricks.......2001-10-09

Let me start off by restating what a few other reviewers have said about this release: many of the prestige classes, spells and magic items presented here are powerful. That said, this book creates a slew of new options for DM's to use in their campaigns. There are literally 100's of new spells and magic items that range from the mundane to the very interesting. There are even several new Minor and Major artifacts for your perusal. The benefit of this sourcebook is that the players can have a wider range of spells available, as well as the dm, in order to specialize their characters. That being said, the villians can have them to present new challenges to the characters. The same can be said of the magic items. While many of the ideas presented are interesting and quite possibly very useful, they also tend to be powerful and may need to be used very carefully in order to not unbalance a game. As for the appearance, the book is well done, obviously a quality piece of work. I was very pleased with it's appearance and overall layout. A good work for DM's to inject some new blood into their campaigns, just watch where you place some of the goodies.

3 out of 5 stars Decent, not outstanding.......2001-09-14

This book fleshes out several areas, such as ritual magic, and provides a host of new spells and magical items.

The spells are, for the most part, workable and not out of balance with the rest of the campaign world. Many of the Prestige Classes are out of whack, but that is a trend that Scarred Lands is just echoing from a great many of the D&D 3 class sourcebooks.

Most of the magical items are overpowered and are not well explained as to function.

The section on Ritual Magic is good and provides a new set of options of characters, particularly at a low level, who would like to stack metamagic feats but lack spell levels to do so. The rules are fair and balanced, but often-times are not clearly explained.

True Rituals are interesting, but difficult to incorperate for anyone other than Dungeon Master as a plot-hook.

If you are a Dungeon Master looking for an interesting expansion to the magical rules, I can recommend this book just for its sections on ritual magic, even neglecting the spells (which aren't half bad).

For players, there really isn't a need.

Scarred Lands: Forsaken (Dead God Trilogy, part 1)

The Divine War, the great conflict between gods and titans, shattered the world of Scarn and transformed it into the Scarred Lands. It also claimed many casualties, including the god of the elves of Termana. With his death, the elves lost their immortality, their purpose and their future. They became forsaken. Vladawen, the forgotten god's high priest, has not given up hope, however. He struggles to return his people to greatness in the only way he knows how: by bringing their god back from the dead.

But resurrection is a tricky business, full of pain and sacrifice. To gain worshipers, Vladawen manages to start a religious war in the land of Darakeene and gains the dubious patronage of Belsameth, Goddess of Lies and Murder. Now, Vladawen's only chance to secure his fledgling religion is to find the lost relics of his god-and forsake those he loves the most.

3 out of 5 stars Adequate, mostly due to the setting rather than the author.......2003-08-20

This is not great literature. It's not even good literature. Byers is a writer of extremely limited ability, but he does at least obey the one rule which every bad fantasy writer should heed: if you can't write, and you know it, you should endeavor to keep the action moving and the story very short. The only things that keep this book and its two companion volumes from being utterly dismal are the fact that it's set in the Scarred Lands, the most compelling D&D campaign world seen in years, and that the pace never slows, thus preventing you from dwelling on the quality of the book itself.

For what it is, which is essentially fan-fiction-for-hire, it's not bad. It's humble, it lacks bombast, and it's nothing more than a low-end junk-food read, but then again, it never pretends to be anything else. I would recommend this only if you, like me, intend to run a Scarred Lands game, and you want a fair impression of the overall "feel" of the Scarred Lands.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2003-01-07

This book is very interesting and draws the reader into the world of The Scarred Lands. Not only is the book full of great storyline and plot that keeps you running the gambit to find out just what is going to happen on the next page. Is That Which Abides going to be resurected? This book draws you in to asking that same question over and over again. It's a tomenting exstacy that is in all great books. Basically, There is a forsaken elf priest who wishes to revive his slain god. Those who know about D&D and Sword & sorcery will enjoy reading how game terms play out in a beautiful dance, and fantasy readers will find a great plot with numerous twists and turns. But i warn you now. don't attempt to get this book unless you are willing to read the rest of the trilogy. It's addictive!

5 out of 5 stars Like the original, only much more usable........2007-03-24

Plenty; both good and bad, has been written about the original Creature Collection. Most of the bad comments centered on the large number of statistical errors and some pretty sub-par artwork. The artwork never bothered me, but the stats for many of the monsters had to be seriously edited to make them usable in a game. Muffed stats torpedoed many a monster. It was obvious that the book was rushed to market in an effort to beat the first 3.0 Monster Manual to the shelves.

Despite its shortcomings; however, the Creature Collection was full of creative beasts that I have found much use for. The Creature Collection Revised keeps all of the original's monsters, but fixes the statistical errors and even has some improved artwork. As part of the revision, this book is now compatible with the 3.5 version of the D&D rules as well. If you're considering buying the original Creature Collection, skip it and get this. If you already own the original, this book is well worth the price of updating.

4 out of 5 stars War of the Gods.......2001-09-04

For those that are NOT familiar with the idea, WOTC has offered an 'Open Game License' to any publisher that would like to contribute to the further growth of the d20 system that has been implemented with D&D3Ed.

Sword and Sorcery Studios is one of the leaders in the race to see who will dominate the d20 market (outside of WOTC). With White Wolf Games as Publisher/Printer of their materials they stand a good chance.

Of all of the campaign settings to date, The Scarred Lands is easily the most imaginative, without journeying so far afield that they lose site of the core d20 rules.

The Scarred Lands takes the classical concept of a war in heaven and turns it on its ear. This blasted landscape of a continent and the surrounding waters is a direct result of a war between the Gods and the Titans. Gorges carved by a Titan's sword, a sea of Blood born of a wounded Titan at the bottom of the Ocean's depths... it goes on from there.

This setting is exactly the opposite of campaigns like the Forgotten Realms or even the venerable Greyhawk campaign. The Scarred Lands is a dangerous and dealy place, full of strange and wonderous people and things... a city of Necromancer (each and every one of them striving to be a lich), a city whose very walls are the arms of a giant mithral golem... this is NOT low fantasy...

So, give The Scarred Lands a try, if you are familiar with the D&D Third Edition Gazetteer or the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer, the formatting will be easy for you to follow.

Finally, SSS has stated their manifesto to be "3rd Edition D&D with a 1st Edition feel"... with that goal in mind... I'd say they are succeeding.

5 out of 5 stars A first glance at the Scarred Lands.......2001-05-24

This book gives brief descriptions of the continent of Ghelspad and all of its kingdoms and countries and with this, it is the first publication by White Wolf that gives deeper insight into the upcoming Scarred Lands Campaign Setting.

Be prepared everyone! The Scarred Lands really rock!

If you already own the D&D Third Edition Gazetteer or the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer, you will have no problems with this book. It is made up the very same way the other two mentioned books are and seemlessly fits into the 3E-rules. This is a D20-System Open Gaming License product.

4 out of 5 stars Essential Reference for the Scarred Lands.......2002-10-10

With all the cross-referencing on the screen itself, I would have to see that this is the best DM Screen I've seen in all my years of gaming. The booklet itself is absolutely necessary to run Scarred Lands not for the adventures, which are not all that great but for the information on the various races of Ghelspad, the main continent used for the adventures in this campaign setting. Between these few pages and the sheer versatility of the screen itself, it's very much worth getting. The adventures are short little nubs good for filler or for when the big adventure you, the DM have been plotting and crafting for a whole week gets flat out rejected or by passed by the characters and you need something quick to fill in. But again, you'll use the reference material in the front a lot more than the adventures and the screen is a DM's little helper par excellant.
