Book Description

As summer dawns on the island of Mistmantle, its inhabitants prepare for the coronation of Crispin the Squirrel. Robes are stitched, cakes are baked, wine is brought up from cellars, and the Heartstone -- the unique gold-and-silver flecked stone that only the priest or the rightful ruler of the island can hold -- is readied. But the newly established peace in Mistmantle is soon under threat. A storm-ravaged ship from a distant land appears in the mists surrounding the island; a dramatic revelation about the revered Heartstone comes to light; and the extra-sensory powers of a young islander reveal the evil close at hand. Urchin finds himself journeying to a hostile island, where the maniacal King Silverbirch and his sorcerer Smokewreath await him. There, Urchin will have to face challenges greater than those he has ever known, and in doing so he will learn a secret about his past that will change his life forever.

I bought this for my daughter last month and she can't wait for the next book to come out. I read the book as well and even though it is predictable, it is a very charming story. Kids with a [..]reading level should have no problem with the book and they will probably really get into the story.

5 out of 5 stars awesome book.......2007-03-12

"I enjoy this book as much as the first one", says my daughter.

5 out of 5 stars High interest reading for kids.......2007-03-08

As a teacher, I have read both Mistmantle books with my students. The first book was chosen from the book fair to be used in a Literature Circle. There were 5 students in the group. The second by popular demand...more than 10 students bought the book. The discussion was terrific. The kids loved it and couldn't wait to read!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Sequel of "Urchin of the Riding Stars".......2006-08-30

URCHIN AND THE HEARTSTONE is the book #2 from the 3 book series THE MISTMANTLE CHRONICLES. It is as good as its predecessor URCHIN OF THE RIDING STARS. The book is packed with action and intrigue and, as usual, M. I. McAllister excells in her depiction of characters. The friendship, courage and wisdom of the main characters are the qualities that every child reading this book will relate to. This is a fairy tale with wonderful descriptions of far-away places that reminded me of all good things from my childhood: from the play in the snow, to my faithfull friends, to the sweets grandma used to make...
M. I. McAllister creates a wonderful world where the ideals of good, justice, courage, friendship and faith are being held high.
The drawings of the cover and at the beginning of each chapters are very well done and in tone with the book.
I recommend this book for children over 5 years of age. Adults that like to remember the good old fairy tales will absolutely love it.

Book Description

They were young, popular, the perfect couple -- an all-American boy and a beautiful cheerleader. But the youthful passion that led them to Lookout Point that terrible evening would prove fatal. For Richie Walters the end came swiftly, as death descended upon him in a savage orgy of horrific violence. Elaine Murray would live long enough to learn just how lucky her boyfriend had been ...

Two brutal slayings have rocked a stunned city. But the murders are merely the nightmare's beginning, flinging open a terrifying Pandora's box of sordid secrets and dark revelations more deadly than the bloodlust that lives in the rock-hard heart of a killer.

5 out of 5 stars Heartstone.......2006-10-25

A young woman struggles to remember what happened the night two of her fellow classmates were brutally murdered. The only problem is, are these memories fact, or are they manipulated by the hypnotist and overzealous cop who needs her to be the case winner? This was a very fast read and his characters great.

i have read everyone of Philip Margolin's books and Heartstone was the first one that i read. this book is a MUST-READ. I read the whole thing in about 3 hours, i could not put it down once i started.
The ending that you thought would be by the middle of the book takes a different turn TWICE, making you say "What the Hell", but its awesome.
this book is worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Just Get Past The Beginning.......2005-07-29

I had this book for a year and could not get past the first few pages. I purchased the book in anticipation of a 4-hour Chicago-California trip and fell asleep on the plane from boredom! The book lay dormant for a year when I grabbed it on the way out the door to (of all places) Jury Duty, the theory being that I could pass it on to some poor soul who was mindlessly sitting in the jury pool room, waiting to be called. The wait to be called dragged on and I forced myself to get past the first chapter. After that, it was a breeze, and I was somewhat put out when I was finally called to sit on a jury! Needless to say, I found the plot compelling and the characters believable. I particularly enjoyed the author's writing style (after the first chapter).

4 out of 5 stars All of the other reviewers are right..........2005-02-26

...this book is both a gripping, page-turning crime story and a tedious, mind-numbingly dull piece of prose. It literally depends on the section of the book you are in.

Prosecutor Al Caproni has a message brought to him that a drifter named Heartstone wants to see him a about a long-past high profile double murder that he helped to prosecute. The narration then flashes back to the night of the murder and follows the original investigation and prosecution of the case.

At times, this section really drags. A star witness is hypnotized and the reader is forced to wade through pages of probing by the psychologist/hypnotist as he tries to unlock her repressed memories(Skimming is recommended). Margolin introduces too many characters but he ties them together wonderfully in the end. As we come back to the present Margolin delivers and ending that hit me like a kick in the belly. Very powerful. I did not see it coming.

All in all - good job!

5 out of 5 stars HEARTSTOPPING HEARTSTONE.......2002-09-26

The criminal justice system is given a once-over in this well-developed, and well-written mystery. Margolin gives us the murder of two upstanding young people on a November night in 1960. Richie Walters has just asked cheerleader Elaine Murray to go steady with him. Their love and hopes for a future together are gone before you know it.
As we examine this murder in depth, we find there are many people involved, and we find ourselves wondering, who really killed this couple? And why?
The immensity of characters doesn't overwhelm the book; you may stop and ask yourself, why are these characters introduced? But by the time the book is finished, you'll see why.
Although the lawyers and the suspected killers are certainly strong focus in the book, I found the heart of the book to be Esther Peglosi, the rather ... teenager who becomes the key witness in the prosecution's case. We first meet Esther as a rather well-developed young woman who doesn't have trouble bedding anybody, but we are also introduced to horrifying facts about her childhood and her parents. Later on, Esther is cunningly seduced by a cop obsessed with the case into being hypnotized, and here we begin to see how the power of suggestion breaks down this girl, and how her love for this cop propels her toward inevitable disaster. Esther's character is very, very well written and she holds the book together.
It's interesting, also, to see the development of young Mark Shaffer, the up and coming lawyer, who finds himself defending the accused Bobby Corbett. He starts out totally ineffectual and enamored with the defendant's live-in girlfriend, and ends up becoming savvy and accomplished. The denouement of this novel is shocking, in what happens to Bobby and Esther. Also, the deathbed confession of the titular character is a whopper.
Can't forget to mention the true villain of this book and that is officer Roy Schindler, who uses his authority to basically fix the case and use poor misguided Esther. Although Al Caproni is culpable, too, he is just another victim of the political schematics.
A STUNNING AND WELL WORTH IT BOOK.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Here it is, the most bizarre module premise of all time... this one is specially set up so you can play with your LJN action figures (Strongheart, Warduke, etc.) in a D&D adventure! Here, you'll find a solidly scripted adventure beginning with an intense wilderness gauntlet, leading into a subterranean citadel filled with labyrinthine catacombs, sinister traps, and a very clever method of transportation that should scare the hell out of your players and provide you with several adventures worth of amusement. A remarkable, well-designed adventure, with a curious license... recommended!

Book Description

Heartstone weaves elements of the Arthurian legend into a contemporary quest tale in which a young woman seeks the truth behind her father's disappearance and the mysterious stone he left her. Maxine Pike teaches English and folklore at a community college on Chicago's north side where she lives with an over-sized dog and vague aspirations. Shortly after learning her archaeologist father is missing and presumed dead, she becomes custodian of the strange-colored stone he left her. Immediately she begins searching for answers: what happened to her father and what is the story behind the stone? Events are set in motion that will test her courage and faith and force her to redefine her own reality. However, there are others who lay claim to the stone. There's the young man who believes he's its rightful guardian, and the wealthy psychologist and aspiring media mogul who has far-reaching plans that hinge on the stone and is willing to use anything and anyone to get his hands on it. Along the way, Max receives some unexpected help from mysterious friends of her father's and, perhaps most unexpected, from her older sister, Olivia. Max's journey will take her from Chicago to London and finally to Alyssum, a remote island off Land's End, and to the reclusive man who owns the island. It is here that she learns the stone's fate and confronts her own destiny.

D. C. Brod lives in St. Charles, Illinois, with her husband, Donald, and a cat, Travis McGee.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent........2007-07-30

This story was a delight to read. It moves fast and stays interesting- full of revelations that leave you curious for more.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific!.......2006-01-22

This is one hell of a read. From the title, I was expecting a yawner romance, a ripped bodice, maybe an understated murder or two. By the time I finished the opening scene, however,I knew I had badly underestimated what is actually a chase/thriller with pacing and wild action that makes The DaVinci Code seem like a day at Grandma's house. The plotting is deft as Brod weaves the excitement and honor of Arthurian legend into modern times. Drawn to the characters, grabbed by the premise, I was hooked. Brod has pulled the sword from the stone with this one.

5 out of 5 stars Plot twists and Ah-ha moments.......2005-08-13

I've read other books by D.C. Brod and found them engaging and intriguing, but Heartstone is atypical: heroine instead of hero and pursuit instead of caper. Equally adept at fantasy and mystery, Brod took me on a wild ride as I followed the characters Maxine and Ben through a Celtic land in search of the stone.
When you find a book that weaves characters you love and plot(s) that keep you on the edge, you have a page-turner, and this book qualifies!
When I got brief glimpses where I thought I knew where it was going, I felt like I'd solved a mystery--had an ah-ha moment.
I can only hope there will be a sequel to Heartstone.

5 out of 5 stars fine modern day Camelot fantasy.......2005-06-25

Ben Pike realizes that his murder will put daughter Maxine in a precarious position because he didn't have the time to tell her what she needed to know. He goes to his death believing his daughter will have the inner fortitude and strength to follow the path he laid out for her. When word reaches Max and hers sister Olivia that Ben is missing and presumed dead, Olivia teams up with Nick, Ben's step-son, in England to find the stone that has been in his family for generations.

The stone comes to Maxine upon Ben's instructions along with a book about the Arthurian legend. Rhys Lewis, a psychologist and Nick's uncle, wants the stone and will do whatever it takes to retrieve it because it is from Excalibur and when the stone and the jewel meet unlimited power will be at the disposal of that person. Max is aided by her father's friends in getting to the Island of Alyssum owned by Arthur Penn where she will meet her destiny. The forces of good, in the persons of Arthur and Nick, who confront Rhys, find they have created a strange twist to the Arthurian legend.

Readers who love the King Arthur stories will find this tale a special treat with so many threads of Celtic mythology running through the storyline. Each major player is a symbol of a character from Camelot including Nick who is a descendant of one of King Arthur's knights. Of course there are some modifications made to the actual myths to better set the plot in the present but D.C. Brod is a sparkling fantasist who brings the legend into the present.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Ruth Rendell tale yet written.......1999-09-01

Ruth Rendell tries her hand a Gothic novella, and creates the most perfectly crafted, disturbing tale I have ever read. In almost every mystery one reads, there is something which detracts, some plot element which didn't seem entirely feasible, some character which seemed paper thin; in short, there is always some contrivance related to the genre which leaves the reader thinking that while he or she may have been entertained, it was a less than perfect book. Such is not the case with Heartstones. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys good writing.

5 out of 5 stars The very best of Ruth Rendell!.......1998-06-13

This is the one I recommend to readers who are new to Ruth Rendell. Though short in length, there is not one wasted or unnecessary word as she tells the story of a young girl struggling through a personal catharsis. As in most of Ms. Rendell's other psychological dramas and mysteries, she keeps the story's secret until the last paragraph.

2 out of 5 stars Good prose. Otherwise, no redeeming value........1998-02-08

Allocating 4 points to plot and 3 each to characters and prose, this one gets a 3. No memorable characters and no plot and no ending. Save your time.

3 out of 5 stars Fun Pulpy Read .......2006-12-29

To the other reviewers: Yes, the original Howard books were fantasic (we all know this), but some of the books written afterwards have been exciting too(mostly the Robert Jordan ones). I'm happy authors have kept this character alive after all these years, the books are just fun pulpy reads for me. How about reviewing some of this book though? The Spider God (actually one of the better books) and the Liberator (sokay) are both in this book and I have them as stand alone novels. If you can get the book for under $5 (with shipping) it should a fun read and that is all that matters.

3 out of 5 stars Lin Carter, L. Sprague de Camp.......2006-05-31

This book reprints some of the Conan stories Lin Carter and L. Sprague de Camp wrote from the 1950s (de Camp) to the 1970s (Carter). None are great. De Camp has been revered as the man who kept Conan alive with the Gnome Press editions in the `50s. He has also been vilified as the man who changed Howard's original tales into something else. Carter came along when Lancer Books was reprinting the Conan stores, and added a few of his own, usually with more of a dark magic theme than de Camp.
De Camp always defended his actions, and at one science-fiction/fantasy convention he needed a bodyguard just to walk around.
Fans did not like his heavy-handed edits of the stories, and told him so in person while he was still alive.
But it's all over now, the original stories are back in print, and this book is a curiosity for the avid Conan fan.

            1 out of 5 stars Imitation isn't always flattering.......2005-12-28

Conan is one of the great characters from fantasy literature. Immensely powerful physically, keen witted, iron willed, and incredibly audacious... the barbarian from the bleak hills of Cimmeria is the star of many highly entertaining stories.

The bad news is that none of those stories appear in this book. Robert E. Howard was the creator of Conan and none of his stories appear in this volume. What is here is the work of enthusiatic but far less talented individuals who were such big fans of Conan that they were inspired to write their own tales. I have read all of their stories and find that they are immediately recognizable as pale imitations of the original.

In sum, Conan is well worth reading and all of the original Howard stories are now available in paperback. I would highly recommend trying one of these volumes such as The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian (Conan of Cimmeria, Book 1) and forget that this one exists.

            Book Description

A new Conan adventure--from one of today's most popular writers of fantasy and SF!For decades, millions of readers have thrilled to the adventures of Conan, the barbarian adventurer invented by Robert E. Howard and further chronicled by other fantasy greats, including such notables as L. Sprague de Camp, Poul Anderson, and Robert Jordan. Now Harry Turtledove, one of today's most popular writers of fantasy and SF, contributes a novel to the Conan saga--a tale of Conan in his youth, in the year or so before he becomes the wandering adventurer we know from the tales of Howard and others. On the verge of adulthood, he lives in a Cimmerian hamlet, caring for his ailing mother, working in his father's smithy, and casting his eye on the weaver's daughter next door. Then war comes: an invasion by the Aquilonian Empire. Conan burns to join the fight, but he's deemed too young. Then, from the border country, comes an unbelievable report: The Aquilonians have smashed the Cimmerian defending forces, and can rule as they please. Soon their heavily garrisoned forts dot the countryside. Their settlers follow after, carving homesteads out of other men's land.Every Cimmerian longs to drive the intruders out with fire and sword, but they must stay their hands, for the Aquilonians have promised savage reprisals. Then, intolerably, the Aquilonian commander takes a wholly dishonorable interest in the weaver's daughter -- and he's not a man to wait, or even ask permission. It's not a recipe for a peaceable outcome.

            2 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-02

While Conan of Venarium is readable enough, the boy band reject on the cover, and the scence of Conan chopping the vegetables in the kitchen alongside his ailing mother are all rather incongruous, and I am sure I am not the only one that feels that way.

Alternate history may be Turtledove's thing, but not much place for it here.

            3 out of 5 stars A Diluted Tale.......2006-05-23

Turtledove's writing craft is present, but Conan of Venarium lacks depth. Frankly, the young Conan in this book isn't that interesting as a person. But, how many 15 year olds are very interesting anyway? None, I suppose. Other characters, like his father Mordec and the enigmatic Melcer from the far northern border of Cimmeria, are more interesting. Overall, I like the story and would recommend it. The one true disappointment is the climactic battle of Venarium. I'd always thought of that battle as the event that defined Conan as a fearless and bloody warrior. Turtledove's battle lacks in pitched intesity, strategy and realism. It's more like something choreographed for Hollywood.

One more note, many of the Conan books by later authors desperately need editing and Conan of Venarium is no exception. In the book Conan encounters an ancient temple and ancient, giant snake in the woods. The event is out of context and un-needed in the story and should have been either left out or further explained. Conan books published by Tor and Ace are always like this. Rather annoying.

1 out of 5 stars Only if you've never read Conan before, this might be OK... otherwise save yourself the agony!.......2005-12-28

I don't even know where to begin... wait, yes I do... deplorable for a tale of Cimmeria and passable as generic fantasy.
I waited for months to get my hands on this novel and had a copy in hardcover as soon as it hit the shelves. Within thirty minutes of settling into the couch and cracking the book my sigh of satisfaction had turned to a moan of dispair... didn't they give Mr. Turtledove any background information at all? Did he even have the opportunity to read any of the 42 previous Tor Conan novels? Why did I wait so long to review this? The memory was to lucid and painful to discuss until now.
After reading this cover to cover I felt like crying. Turtledove is a fine author, but obviously was working under an incredible deadline when he rendered this. There are not 13 lapses, as a previous review indicated but at least 22 ( I have read all of the Tor, Ace, Bantam and Lancer Conan pieces and know my Hyborea )... the banner of the Lion reference was simply absurd, the chronology is faulty and the lifestyle of a Cimmerian as represented in this book was laughable... think Scotland around 50 AD and you might have a clearer picture of what Howard had intended.
            Sure it's a fantasy novel.
            Yep, it's make-believe.
But this book is like reading a Superman comic in which Clark Kent answers the Batphone, flys an invisible jet and wears a green power ring from which his power flows... jumbled and confusing if you know anything about the history of the character and world.

3 out of 5 stars Not beyond criticism BUT..........2005-03-21

...Not so bad it deserves any one star rating! First the actual quality of Turtledove's writing alone in style IS above par, and even moreso when compared to some of the other contracted Conan written stuff that I have read. His prose is extremely readable. Now, the critics that point out faults with Cimmerian culture as portrayed by Turtledove are, for sure, not out of line. There ARE a few places that just scream out, anachronism. There ARE a few places that stretch credibility and are incongruous with what a lifelong fan could/should expect to see portrayed. One problem is that for so long Conan fans had been left to make up for themselves, based on a few snippets from actual Robert E Howard written stories, what Conan's youth was like. This made an "origin" novel a tough task for any writer. And Turtledove has to take a few hits, just from individual expectations alone. Certainly the Aquilonian villain could have been more villainous enough to me, and I did expect Cimmerian women to be stronger-willed.

It does read at times as if it was at onetime intended as a YA(Young Adult) re-imagining of Conan; at other times, as if it was a story originally written of some young Celt dealing with Roman oppressors, but the Celt was changed to a Cimmerian named Conan and the Romans were changed to Aquilonians. Now THAT original story may otherwise have deserved four, even five stars, from me, and perhaps a couple stars more from other critics. As a CONAN story it IS far from what it could/should have been. Purchase with caution, and not too high an expectation, but it is enjoyable for what it is. It is a good read in and of itself, but not very Howard-ian.

1 out of 5 stars HARRY IS A CONAN FAN?.......2005-01-08

The book states that harry is a lifelong Conan fan. Well, it must be Conan O'Brian because it certainlt isn't Conan the Barbarian. How could anyone who ever READ and any of Robert E. Howard's works ever come up with such a mess as this. I was quite excited about it as the Sack of Vanarium is the first significant event that Robert E. Howard ever mentions about the 16 year old Conan but never put it into story. I would have preferred that it wasn't now. Of course this concerns Aquilonia, the most powerful kingdom of the Hyborian world, expanding its borders deep into the northen lands and into Conan's home of Cimmeria, and of the subsequent destruction of Venarium outpost by the Cimmerians.

Poorly developed characters including Conan's mother not to mention most of the Cimmerians who come off as more like brutish stupid Picts than the powerful, yet clever warriors they were. And since when do Cimmerians live in towns??? There were tribesman. Nomadic Tribesman who lived more along the lines of native Americans in animal skinned or wood huts or even caves...but not in structures that Turtledove describes.

The action scenes are poorly paced and boring, the characters are boring, and Conan comes off in his youth as a sniveling momma's boy. Turtledove makes Roland Green look like Tolkien by comparison. Just Awful!
