China Bayles, a lawyer who's dropped out of practice but hasn't yet handed in her bar card, is back in business at Thyme and Season, her herb shop in Pecan Springs, Texas. The shop is so successful that China and Ruby, a friend with another remarkably successful New Age boutique named Crystal Cave, have added a tea room--named, of course, Thyme for Tea. Pecan Springs is getting to sound a lot like Sausalito, but apparently a lot of tourists pass through the west Texas town on their way to or from the Pecan Pageant, the Herb Fair, and, presumably, other unnamed attractions.
This ninth China Bayles mystery is a cozy case of confused property lines that lead a couple of likable people into a confrontation that ends in murder. Unfortunately, the dead man was China's main supplier of the herb of the title, and Christmas is just around the corner. So it behooves China (along with her new husband, a retired police detective, and her close friends, who all seem to be in law enforcement) to straighten things out, nail the culprit, and reestablish the mistletoe supply as soon as possible. Which they do, in a whimsical story that's as much about China's strained relationship with Ruby and her new life as a wife and stepmother as it is about who killed the Mistletoe Man. This all-but-bloodless tale is long on charm and local color and short on action. Susan Wittig Albert's quirky characters and their customs are on display (like the maiden lady who believes she's been abducted by aliens) rather than suspense or plot. But Albert's many fans won't mind a leisurely afternoon with China or the herbal lore that's served up as an appetizer before each chapter. --Jane Adams
Book Description
Susan Wittig Albert's "unique" series (Seattle Post-Intelligencer) featuring herbalist China Bayles is infused with the down-home charm of small-town Texas. Compelling, suspenseful, and wholly original, Mistletoe Man tells the story of China's search for a killer, her struggle to support a troubled friend-and of her desperate attempt to reconcile the demands of her new business with the desires of her heart...
"Warm, witty...an appealing series that just keeps getting better."-Booklist
"Albert's characters are as real and as quirky as your next-door neighbor."-Raleigh News & Observer
"A treat for gardeners who like to relax with an absorbing mystery."-North American Gardener
Ninth in the series

Mistletoe Man.......2006-07-06
Good, intriquing plot with some unusual twists. Albert's descriptive writing makes this fictitous part of Texas come alive.
My favorite ot the series!.......2006-04-18
While I really like the entire China Bayles series, this is one of my favorite. The characters - from Aunt Velda and her Klingons to the prim and proper Mrs. K are a wonderfully eclectic mix that will leaving you wondering until the last page. You also get to know Ruby, China and McQuaid better in this book, which is always a plus in my book.
MISTLETOE MURDER.......2006-01-20
The 9th entry in the China Bayles series finds China now married to McQuaid, and getting ready for the annual Christmas house tours in Pecan Creek. Her friend, Ruby, however, is acting very strange and China's worried about her. What's going on with Ruby? An astute reader can guess pretty quickly why the change in the otherwise ebullient gal. Murder enters the picture when China's gruff mistletoe supplier is found murdered, the apparent victim of a hit and run. The main suspects are China's friends, two sisters, and their dotty aunt who claims she was abducted by aliens. Another mystery is the girls' new cook, Mrs. Kendall, who apparently has stolen money from the tea shop. The connection between all this is revealed in Albert's entertaining dialogue, and all of her best characters show up again. A good entry in this popular series.
ENJOYABLE READ.......2004-09-26
I have not been reading this series in order, probably a mistake, but have found the author makes it quite easy to follow the overall story line, nevertheless. This is an enjoyable read of the "cozy" sort and was simply fun. Ms Albert is a wonderful story teller. Her books, including this one, are filled with interesting facts, plants, cooking, etc. Overall, recommend this one highly and am looking forward to more. Thank you Ms. Albert!
China investigates the death of the mistletoe man.......2004-09-25
China Bayles is in the middle of decorating her home for the holidays and is feeling overwhelmed with her new roles of wife and mother, and with opening up of a new tea room with her friend Ruby. As if this isn't enough, she's run out of wreaths and has to make a trip to the country to pick up new ones from the two sisters who make them for her. While she is visiting with them she discovers that they are having problems with their neighbor Carl who supplies China with mistletoe for her herb shop. She also discovers that they are caring for their elderly aunt, who thinks that she is being pursued by Klingons. When Carl is killed by a hit-and-run driver China suspects one of the neighbor woman hit him on purpose. Further complications occur when China's best friend Ruby, begins acting strangely and refuses to talk to China about what's bothering her. Her last problem is her new cook at the tea room, who seems to have a problem with larceny. Albert does her usual fine job of weaving a mystery around the professional and personal life of China Bayles. Although the killer seems to confess too easily to China in the end, this is still a good addition to the series.

Christmas stories from around the world.......2005-11-01
From the back cover:
"A Man To Live For" by Emma Richmond
As far as Francine was concerned, she and Gile Lapotaire were strangers thrown together by chance on a romantic train journey through Europe. Why, then, did the handsome French-Swiss banker seem to know so much about her--and despise her for it?
"Yule Tide" by Catherine George
Judith's marriage to Nick Campion had been brief and turbulent. But, two days before Christmas, she found herself making her way to her childhood home with her estranged husband. The journey was destined to be stormy--and not just because of the terrible weather!
"Mistletoe Kisses" by Lynsey Stevens
Kael Craigen claimed he still loved Jazmin, but could she forget his betrayal five years ago? Visiting her former home in Sydney for Christmas brought back memories of her past love for him--would a kiss under the mistletoe rekindle their passion?
"Christmas Charade" by Kay Gregory
Going home for Christmas was always a joy for Nina--apart from facing her father's annual matchmaking efforts! But this year it would be different. What she needed was a temporary fiance...and gorgeous, sophisticated Fenton Hardwick was the perfect candidate!
And my review:
The first story, "A Man to Live For" was VERY badly written. I couldn't get more than fifteen pages into it. It was just so choppy. It was full of little sentence fragments combined with huge, run-on rambling sentences (for balance, I suppose. I didn't work). It was like trying to read something written by a four-grader who has bad grammar. Not worth the time to read it. One star.
The second story, "Yule Tide", was quite enjoyable. I love stories of estranged spouses reconciling. While this one wasn't the best I've read, it was still pretty good. Both characters were loveable, and for once, the problems keeping them apart were realistic, without being insurmountable. I kept the book for this story. Four stars.
The third story, "Mistletoe Kisses", was not only stupid, but offensive. Stupid woman falls in love with a married man. Okay, she didn't know he was married at the time, but he sure did! Now it's years later, he's divorced, so now they can get back together and live happily every after, right? Gag, gag, barf! Ever hear the saying, "Once a cheater, always a cheater"? If a man can carry on with you when he's married to his first wife, he can just as easily cheat on you when you're his new wife. And this is supposed to be our hero? How can you cheer for a couple to get together when one is an idiot, and the other is lower than a snake's belly? One star (only because I can't give no stars).
The fourth story, "Christmas Charade", started off well, but the characters never developed beyond cardboard cutouts. They were both such stereotypes: alpha male, stupid, immature, insipid female. She acts sour (read: like a child) all the time, so he calls her Ms. Lemon. Funny the first time you read it, not so funny when he's called her that for the fiftieth time. Got bored halfway through and never finished it. One star.
Definitely not one of the better anthologies out there, though it is redeemed by having at least one decent story. Buy this if you find it at a garage sale or a thrift store, otherwise, it isn't worth the money.

delightful holiday romance.......2003-08-20
book blurb---After a rocky beginning---Sabrina almost had her boss, the new CEO of Worths Dept Store, arrested for shoplifting--their relationship only got worse! First, Michael cancelled the store's annual Santa Claus parade. Then he wouldn't believe that Sabrina hadn't encouraged his teenage son to fall in low with her. He even suspected her of being a gold digger!
Except that no Christmas grinch could kiss a woman senseless or set her blood on fire like Michael did. They were completely wrong for each other---so why did "together" feel so right?

BACK COVER REVIEW.......2007-02-06
Lindsay couldn't believe it. She was working on a major deal - with a very important client. Daniel McKinley. But Daniel was a workaholic and, even though it was almost Christmas, he insisted Lindsay drop everything and spend the holidays with him---talking business!
In fact, Lindsay shouldn't have been surprised. Three years ago, she'd dared suggest there was more to life than making money - and Daniel had fired her! But this deal was vital. She'd have to negotiate with Daniel - under the mistletoe if need be! As it turned out, Daniel had some unexpectedly romantic notions about how to spend winter nights with Lindsay.

Book Description
Kaitlin Davis has moved back to Seattle, Washington, to take an executive job and to put behind her the remnants of a twelve-year relationship. But when she meets her new boss, Cynthia Perry, Kaitlin knows that she is in trouble. Soon she finds herself giving in to the kind of love she thought she would never know again.
Customer Reviews:
Short and Sweet.......2005-12-29
The text from the back cover isn't currently on this page, so I'm including it in this review...
"Kaitlan Davis has one big rule; never get involved with your boss. But, when her new boss turns out to be stunning and mysterious Cynthia Perry, Kaitlan finds that rules can be very hard to live by...
Kaitlan has moved back to Seattle, Washington to take an executive job at a manufacturing facility. Glad to put behind the remnants of a twelve year relationship that ended eight months before with her discovery that her lover had emptied their house and moved to another state with Kaitlan's best friend, Kaitlan is eager to throw herself into her new position.
When she meets her new boss, Vice President of accounts Cynthia Perry, Kaitlan knows she's in trouble. Stunning and self-assured, Cynthia's apparent flirtations with Kaitlan leave her in a quandry. But even though Kaitlan tries very hard to live by her rule of never getting involved with co-workers, Cynthia seems intent on getting to know her a lot better.
Finally giving in to her own desires, Kaitlan finds a love that she had thought she would never discover. But just when it seems her new life is perfect, her ex-lover shows up expecting to be taken back with open arms, and willing to do anything to keep Kaitlan all to herself."
This was an enjoyable read, but was only slightly longer than the description on the back cover. Unlike many books, the cover description actually describes the story very well. The only questionable part is the last sentence of the last paragraph -- it describes something much more dramatic than what actually happens.
If you're looking for something light to tide you over on a short plane ride, this isn't a poor choice of reading material. However, if you're looking for something deep and meaningful... something that will stick with you for days... try something else like a book by Radclyffe or Dunne.
what a disappointment.......2005-04-15
It is not the length of this book that is the problem, it's the quality. The premise was interesting, but the writing was full of holes and stale.
This is the first and last book of this writer that I'll waste my time reading.
HoHum!.......2002-08-25
As other reviewers have mentioned this book is short and the story is mirrors the brevity of the pages. I might have been more engaged if the author had provided more information on the protagnists.
Good premise, not long enough.......2002-04-29
Overall, this book is a cute romance. However, the author could have developed the plot and the characters a lot more. The premise was great but I didn't like the Brady Bunch treatment of the story. The challenges and conflicts faced by the two protagonists were resolved too easily and much too quickly. Not bad if you're looking for a quick read that won't make you think too much.
Shallow!!.......2002-03-21
Even though the reviews say the book is short I still couldn't believe HOW short. This is a novella, a one-issue story without any real depth. Even so, shortness is no reason to have shallow characters (a 3-page short story can present a fully-realized, engaging character) and these two women were shallow. They had no complexity at all in their thought processes beyond "She's beautiful! Oh, I'm in love!"
I didn't want to know them and most romance novels make me yearn to meet the characters. I wouldn't recommend this at all. If you like shorter reads with more emotional depth, I'd recommend Peggy Herring.

ASIN: 1929244010 |
Book Description
"Old Ironsides". Her name is known to just about every American, but how many of us know her story and adventures? Too few unfortunately. Her exploits read like a Hollywood screenplay or a novel from a wild imagination. However, they're all true and presented here for the first time in a historically accurate dramatization. Sail aboard the USS Consititution as she trades murderous broadsides with the Guerriere, during one of her most famous War of 1812 victories.

This has to be one of their best yet!.......2002-03-27
I am becoming a big fan of the Colonial Radio Theater. They are really good at making historic events exciting and fun. This particular tape really is exciting and tells the story of a relatively little known event. I won't spoil your fun by giving the ending away, but it really is cool.
Excellent!.......2000-07-29
I really got a different perspective of the hardships that the crew had to undergo to acheive the success that they did on the Constitution. Capt Hull was an excellent captain and his example was certainly an archetype of leadership. I enjoyed the wrap up at the end of the story to let the listener know what happened after this particular incident to the various parties involved. Great story and an excellent narrative. Again you are there!
It's The Best!.......2000-03-26
This is really cool. I really feel like I'm standing on the Constitution next to Captain Hull. The naval battle is so exciting but you'll have to listen to see how it turns out. Get it. It's great fun!

I've read this book several times it was the first of the Collection that i read. My Grandmother sent it to me for my 16th birthday. i didn't read it for a while because i thought it looked corny. well i eventually started reading it, and once i started i couldn't put it down. i read the whole thing in 2 days. Then i started it over again. I have now read most of the collection. This book was i must say my favorite. My second favorite was The Historical Collection part 2. After that it would be Texas.
Historical novels.......2000-01-05
I wasn't sure if I would actually enjoy a historical novel. However, I loved this novel! All of the stories captured my attention, except for the last. However, you might enjoy it!
Couldn't put it down.......1999-06-16
This is a wonderful collection of stories. They each have a great plot with a little twist just to keep you reading. These types of books are escpecially good if you only have short times to read (has 4 stories).

Exciting Debut Novel.......2002-02-04
"Jean Henry blends fact with fiction in this exciting debut novel of the end of the outlaw era, and the first stirrings of love."
A Powerful Story: Escape on the Wind.......2002-02-04
"Jean Henry's Escape on the Wind is a powerful story of a young woman hiding her identity from outlaws. The author writes lyrically of Wyoming, settlers, and the rough men who ran wild on the frontier. She brings courage, conviction, grace and spiritual beauty to this fine story."
HIghly recommended -- an insider's look at western life.......2001-04-24
Moving as quickly as the wind sweeping the vast plains of Wyoming, ESCAPE ON THE WIND by Jean Henry lends drama to the historical legends of Wyoming, creating an extraordinarily vivid account of the days when posses persued bank robbers.
Andrea Bordeaux lives with her grandparents in Wyoming. When outlaws arrive, her grandmother quickly shears Andrea's hair, puts her in overalls, and calls her Andy, hoping to protect her. Unfortunately, when the outlaws leave, they take Andy with them. Certain her grandparents are dying, Andy finds herself thrust into the midst of Wild Bunch members who take her to the Hole-in-The-Wall, where they plan the Belle Fourche Bank Robbery.
Small in stature, Andy finds herself relegated to cooking for the outlaws. Only Billy knows the truth of her sex, and she's sworn him to secrecy. Andy tries to reform Billy between cooking and cleaning. Following an attack by a vicious outlaw intent on carving her face, Butch Cassidy himself promises she can go home after their planned bank job. Meanwhile, the Five-State Governor's Pact determines to rid Wyoming of outlaws, while Andy wants nothing but to go home; that is, if she still has a home to go to.
ESCAPE THE WIND provides a fascinating glimpse into the legendary outlaws of Wyoming. Jean Henry's remarkably fresh voice tells a compelling story that's hard to put down. Historical fans will thoroughly enjoy this visit to the Hole-in-the-Wall gang.
A delightful blend of Western fiction and Wyoming history..........2000-07-14
It was a dangerous time to be an outlaw. As this story opens, the Five State Governor's Pact - enacted to rid the country of outlaws - is in full force and change is on the wind.
But young Andrea Bordeaux is hardly aware any of that as she keeps a watchful eye out the window of her grandparent's cabin. Outside, a Wyoming springtime blizzard rages as Andrea anxiously waits for her grandfather to return from his trip. Relief finally comes when she thinks she sees the form of his wagon heading towards the ranch. Instead, the form turns out to be four riders seeking shelter from the storm.
Fearful of what the rough-looking men might do to a beautiful young woman, Andrea's protective grandmother quickly cuts the girl's long braids and orders her to change into her grandfather's overalls and a heavy shirt. Within minutes Andrea is transformed into Andy, a gangly-looking kid that could pass as a young boy... at least that is the plan.
Things get complicated when the outlaws (members of the Wild Bunch gang) stay the night and Andy's grandfather shows up, deathly ill. The next morning brings clear skies and a renewed sense of hope to the situation as Harve "Kid Curry" Logan and his men prepare to leave the ranch. But when the outlaws notice a posse closing in, Logan kidnaps young Andy as insurance against a shoot-out and high-tails it to Hole-in-the-Wall.
Thus the stage is set for non-stop action in this debut novel by Jean Henry, a delightful blend of Western fiction and Wyoming history. The dialogue in this tightly-written novel rings true and is peppered with humor, making for a thoroughly enjoyable read. The early introduction (and the resulting misadventures) of Tom "Peep" O'Day (who is eventually blamed for the bungled robbery at Belle Fourche) adds a wonderful balance to the storyline and offers an interesting insight into this member of the Wild Bunch. An added bonus is the epilogue which details the fate of each gang member.
If it's a wild ride you're looking for, Jean Henry's Escape On the Wind will take you on an adventure that will leave you breathless.

Fall Through the Sky (Wind Trilogy, Book 2)
ASIN: 0962862150 |
Book Description
Struggling to survive in a post-Armageddon world, Tyger and her Windriders decide to rebell against the Patriarchy which has enslaved them and escape New Seattle for possible freedom outside the domes. Book One of the Wind Trilogy.
Customer Reviews:
Great talent from such a young author........2005-02-08
Wonderful story with great character development. Tyger is the leader of the Windriders, a gang that rides the currents, and decides that peace must be made among the street gangs in New Seattle. New Seattle is a city enclosed by a dome that protects its inhabitants from the severe and possibly life-threatening environment that Earth has become. The Patriarchy controls the only exit out of the Dome and controls the lives of the citizens. They also limit the resources that citizens have access to and encourage the existance of street gangs in order to maintain the Patriarchy's plan. This is the first book in a trilogy.
Great and wonderful.......2003-09-30
Ms. DiMarco has opened a whole new world for me, one that has helped me through tough times and difficult places in my life... i enjoyed escape to the wind and fall through the sky... i loved them so much that i already have my copies of the celebration editions of all three purchased...
Don't waste your time or money.......2003-02-14
This book reeks with an amateur's attempt at science fiction. The plot is dry and the characters unrealistic. This book is NOT worth the money.
I will read this book again and again........1998-12-22
Ms. DiMarco has created a vivid and fascinating world (and a frightening glimpse of a possible future) and peopled it with complex and many-layerd characters. It has been quite some time since I have encountered such believable and unique individuals between the pages of a novel and I look forward to the continuation of their stories with great anticipation.
An excellent Sci-Fi Fantasy read.......1998-11-12
I have just finished reading this for the second time. It is too hard to put down. Congratulations to Jennifer. This book is just what lesbian lovers of Sci-Fi Fantasy need. The book is well written and the story is easy to follow. The futuristic look at our world is quite scary but maybe one day it will come true. I look forward to getting my hands on a copy of Fall Through the Sky.

StarMariner.......2006-05-22
From the book cover: Grace and Contessa followed the men they loved to a tiny Caribbean island jewel called St. Martin where Christoff, his sons Robert and Will, and their friend Rick discovered everything they had dreamed of. It was the perfect place to escape from the insanity of the outside world and build their fortunes, Paradise Rum and the Tradewinds Hotel. But the island heat inflamed passionate romance and redhot jealousy. They soon learned that St. Martin was not big enough for two reigning families. There were hidden secrets in this paradise, and a price to pay to live there.
This book is an introduction to the 1993 NBC miniseries Trade Winds. It is a very exciting tale of intrigue, passion and romance. I loved this book and found it to be a worthwhile read. The only thing I hate is that it didn't became a serial.

I loved this story..the book and the tv series. There was suspense, much romance, and it held my interest throughout the book.
