Book Description
Idea Index kick-started a revolution in graphic design books, unique in size, feel--and most important--wealth of ideas. Layout Index is the next step, a compendium of layout idea-generators that will help designers explore multiple possibilities for visual treatments each time they turn the page. The visual and textual suggestions are divided into eight major areas, including newsletters, flyers, posters, brochures, advertising, stationery, page layout, and Web pages.
Each of these examples are designed to inspire effective solutions in the viewer's mind, rather than simply give specific answers to design problems. The tone and temperament of the design problems, as well as their solutions, vary from traditional to cutting-edge, from corporate to crazy. Designers will learn to solve their design problems, produce fantastic work and become better, more creative thinkers.
* Both creativity books and layout books are extremely popular
* As proven by Idea Index, the format of this book is a proven winner with designers
Customer Reviews:
great for students, good for old hands, priceless for adhoc designers.......2007-01-04
The whole "index" series is good for jump starting when in a stuck place. For average students it can really be helpful to get them to seek/create more variety in their work. For marketing or PR individuals or students it is a must have. Many individuals may have a cursory introduction to design and yet find themselves having to create layouts and design. The Index Books are a lifesaver.
Sad leftovers from the dark ages..........2006-10-14
This book is at first appearance, visually interesting and consuming. But upon closer look (as in opening it) it's not worth the time, money or breath sadly. The concepts and ideas within this book can be inspiring to thoses who have the time and energy, but overall this book is just a display of bad, kitsch design. My advice? Don't bother.
Not overly sophisticated.......2005-09-06
I bought this along with the Color Index, and I must admit I'm not overly impressed with the ideas in this text.
I will keep it onboard because you -never- know what might spark your creativity, and I must admit there are a few good ideas to jump off from in this book. I donno, I guess I just feel underminded when I flip through this book. It is a bit too kitchy for me (think clip-art-like graphics), and many of the solutions presented in it are too busy and hardly professional.
i use a lot.......2004-12-09
for those who aren't experienced in the in's and out's of page layout and design, this book is a lifesaver. it really gets your creative juices flowing by simply giving you a full range of possible ideas for how you can change up your design. i found it much more useful than the idea book, which didn't really help me with the visual expression part. if you have a concept and you simply want to consider all the possibilities for how you can express it on a page, i recommend getting this book!
A simple, helpful guide.......2004-07-09
Design inspired by this little book leans towards clean & well ordered displays of information. This book provides basics of page building & information distribution.
Beginners will like this book, however, those looking for more complex layout ideas should either work on the existing ideas taking them to the next levels, or peruse other books.

Fresh Ideas to Stimulate Creative Juices.......2000-06-10
This book is a wonderful display of what Graphic Designers are doing around the country. Each page highlights a different piece, showing exterior and interior design, as well as, the specs for each project. By flipping through the book, I can break any creative block and move foward on my client's job. Each time I look at the pages of this book, I see something new and exciting. A great tool to solve a difficult design problem, or just to see what other creative minds are doing.

A must-have book for business card designers and enthusiasts.......1996-08-21
This book should be the first of several for anyone with a strong interest in business card design.
It is well done, clean, and contains many "idea-jogging" original designs by
talented professionals in the industry. A look at this book will surely give
anyone new ideas on how to make their own business card a "keeper."

Book Description
Newsletter Design A Step-by-Step Guide to Creative Publications "Make it dramatic. Make it readable. Make it believable." Words of advice to those who plan, design, or edit newsletters from the author of Newsletter Design, Edward A. Hamilton. Follow the advice of this designer of world-renowned publications and your newsletter will never land in the junk-mail pile. You'll learn techniques used by the most successful publications to attract readers and rivet their attention. Included in this step-by-step guide:
- Planning visual content
- Fast-paced journalistic writing
- Forceful page layout
- Eye-catching graphics
- Strong, clear typography
- Powerful photojournalism
- Cost-wise production
From selecting a name, logotype, and cover design to going on press, every element of producing a stand-out newsletter is explained step-by-step in clear language. Principles are expressed in simple terms that apply equally to desktop publishing or traditional T-square and typewriter. Layouts that are cluttered and complexor bland and austerecan sabotage even the best editorial ideas. The author shows you how to avoid the stock, "off-the-shelf look". You'll learn to master simple but powerful page layout, sparkling typography that promotes clarity, strength and elegance. you'll learn how to edit and design with compelling journalistic photographs and vivid graphics. In addition, the book introduces a twelve-part grid design that not only opens up new creative possibilities and relief from the standard three-column page, it works perfectly with computer coordinates. There's plenty of support for desktop publishers using WordPerfect, Lotus, Adobe, and Quark. You'll get tips for spicing up your pages with tables, charts, graphs, pictographs, and maps, using simple software programs. It's all here. From logotype to printed pages, you won't find a more readable, on-the-money guide to designing newsletters.
Customer Reviews:
Useful.......2002-10-10
This book is very useful and I use it as a guide when producing newsletters for my campus. The author's tone is a bit high-handed but the information is invaluable. There are examples of styles and set-ups for very fine standard styles. Not anything cutting-edge in it, though. The author is thorough in language useage and styles. Lots of what not to dos in here.
Really old book.......2002-09-04
This is a good book with lots of tried and true design tips, but if you're looking to redesign your newsletter and give it a "current" feel, be forwarned: this book is almost 10 years old, and the sample newsletters they feature show it. I think it's a good book, but given its age it should be cheaper.
Excellent Source for Designing a Polished Newsletter.......1998-08-23
With this book plus "Producing a First-Class Newsletter" By Barbara A. Fanson, I learned everything I needed to know to produce a very polished redesign of the monthly newsletter for my company's customers. Well worth the money.

Customer Reviews:
Got to agree with the others..........2007-01-27
This book is lacking in every way. It may have been amazing in 2002 or 2004 when it was put out, but it is now only good for a class in what NOT to do. Most of the images are pretty boring and tame. I felt that a lot of the images were so obvious and expected - stuff you see everyday. Rockport's 1,000 Graphic Elements: Details for Distinctive Designs was much better. At least it had some inspiring images and cutting-edge work. More 3-D stuff, too.
Skip this book and check out 1,000 Graphic Elements: Details for Distinctive Designs; it's better.
Very bad resource book! Bad as in terrible..........2005-01-18
I'm a design professional and rely on books as resources for insight to the work being produced out there. But when I got this book and opened it, I could hardly find a page or spread that had anything decent on it. This book reminds me of some of the resource books I used in college 8+ years ago. This book's content is very poor quality and very dated material. It's the only book I've ever purchased online and been highly dissappointed about its content. I'd trade this book for a yo-yo at this point. Trust me, DO NOT purchase this book.
Awwwww..........2002-10-31
This book's content ranges from fair design to absolutely abominable. I'm eighteen and I run circles around most of the designers featured in this book... that's not a good sign. The best design in this book is actually the cover, which can be very decieving... most of the content is flatly uncreative, with all the dullness of a dentist's waiting room. It is, however a good example of what not to do in brochure design: noted mistakes include sloppy collaging (not intentionally sloppy), terrible visual appeal, and the work of designers who went filter-happy in Photoshop (the Emboss filter, no less.) Please avoid this book. Amateurs might enjoy it, but for God's sake, don't emulate the work in it. I realize how arrogant this review may be, but it's hard not to feel that way when your own work puts thiers to shame.

Jan Brett, well-loved for her ornate, Scandinavian-themed picture books takes her talents deep into the Monteverde Cloud Forest of Costa Rica. A tropical twist on The Mitten, this story chronicles the antics of myriad animals that make themselves right at home in the handcrafted leaf umbrella that Carlos has left at the foot of a giant fig tree. As the tree frog, toucan, kinkajou, tapir, quetzal, monkey, and more pile into the umbrella, Carlos, who is visiting the cloud forest expressly to see these animals, doesn't see a single one. Things heat up when the impulsive monkey hurls the umbrella into the river: "'¿Qué pasa? What is happening?' Froggy asks as water starts to pour into the umbrella." Jaguar jumps in, adding to the confusion, but it's the addition of the tiniest of hummingbirds that causes the big "KER-SPLASH!" Brett's gorgeous, detailed watercolor and gouache illustrations steal the show here, from the exquisite endpapers to the vine-encased leafy side panels that reveal the tree-climbing boy on the left side and a sneak preview of the next umbrella-dwelling animal on the right side. Not Brett's best-crafted story, but her fans will want this lush offering anyway. (Ages 5 to 8) --Karin Snelson

Tips from Jan Brett
- Want a reality check on your artwork? View your work in a mirror.
- Be honest with yourself, and get comfortable with personal and private writing. Write in a notebook that no one sees but you.
- Remember the things that happen to you now. It's okay to feel things strongly as a kid. You can use your emotions as part of the recipe for something later.

Book Description
A walk through the Costa Rican cloud forest provides a wonderfully lush setting for Jan Brett's beloved animal illustrations. When Carlos drops his umbrella to climb a tree for a better view of the animals, they all cram into the banana-leaf umbrella as it floats by--from the little tree frog to the baby tapir to the big jaguar and more. It gets so crowded in the umbrella that there isn't even enough room for a little hummingbird! So over the umbrella tumbles, everyone falls out, and poor Carlos comes back wondering why he didn't see any animals all day.
In the spirit of Jan Brett's The Mitten and The Hat, this cheerful tale of escalation will have readers poring over every illustration for the world of details Jan packs in. With its classic story, exotic jungle setting, and brilliantly colorful menagerie, The Umbrella is sure to take its place among Jan's many family favorites.
Customer Reviews:
Jan Brett pleases children and their parents.......2007-07-25
This book portraits the lushness of the rain-forest and also some of the wildlife of this area.
Jan Brett's illustrations are rich in detail. Included in these bigger illustrations, adults can find subtle hints built into the overall picture, of upcoming pages and additions.
Overall, Jan Brett's stories are a must-read; childhood would not be complete without having read at least one of her tales.
No snow or trolls, but the jungle is just as beautiful.......2006-08-11
Jan Brett remains number 1 on my list of modern children's book illustrators. The story is good, too, but the pictures are....what can I say.... just great.
The Umbrella.......2006-02-17
Jan Brett captures the reader with a lovely story and her delightful artwork. She never disappoints her readers young and old. I teach second grade and used the book with a rainforest unit and the students loved it
Wonderful Book.......2005-09-10
Beautiful book with pictures that really reminded me of Costa Rica. I love reading this book to my two year old son.
A fun jungle adventure.......2005-09-06
My 3 1/2 yr old grandson likes this book. He enjoys hearing about Carlos in the jungle as he climbs the fig tree and he likes to look for Froggy and Toucan in the illustrations of the book. He seems to enjoy this story over and over.

Rain, Rain, DON'T Go Away!.......2005-09-22
Momo is delighted with the umbrella and rain boots she receives for her third birthday. She eagerly awaits a rainy day as she knows that her umbrella and boots are not for sunny or windy days.
The preschooler's impatience and eagerness to use her new "grown up" presents can be recognized and understood. With those gifts come Momo's independence and sense of self. Momo reminds herself to comport herself "like a grown up lady" and one can't help but smile at how Momo sees herself and her world, rain or shine.
That umbrella was the start of Momo's independence; it is one thing she never forgot to bring home; she was able to walk unescorted and she saw herself as being closer to the "grown up ladies" she admires.
This is an excellent book and a timeless classic that will shine on the memories of those who read and/or listen to it.
Great Book; Great Illustrator.......2005-09-09
Originally published in 1958, UMBRELLA is the story of a young girl, Momo, who receives an umbrella and red rubber boots for her third birthday. Momo is as impatient as her parents are insistent that her new presents be saved for a rainy day--not a sunny day or a windy day!
In addition to telling a story of a preschooler's impatience and eagerness, the story also tells of a child's growing independence. With the rain comes an opportunity for Momo to grow and mature. "The street was crowded and noisy, but she whispered to herself, `I must walk straight, like a grown-up lady!'" (18). Momo also shows signs of becoming more responsible, "She did not forget her umbrella when her father came to take her home. She used to forget her mittens or her scarf so easily -- but not her umbrella" (24). The story concludes with this memorable note, "It was not only the first day in her life that she used her umbrella, it was also the first day in her life that she walked alone, without holding either her mother's or her father's hand" (32).
Taro Yashima was a gifted author and illustrator. Both text and illustrations are memorable. (It was by far my favorite picture book growing up--especially the bon polos!!!) His use of language in this book especially was brilliant.
A story about patience and growing independence.......2000-05-22
This was my favorite book when I was a little girl! When I had my daughter, I began looking for it, but I couldn't remember the author's name. After all, as a child, who wrote the book didn't really matter to me. I vividly remembered the clean Japanese-style drawings, and the beautiful, rythmic song of the rain falling on Momo's umbrella. Then, my mother brought out a box of my old books. There it was! Well-worn, and well-loved. Now as a mother, I also remember that this book was one of a number of beautiful multicultural books that came out in the late '60s and early '70s. They were a pretty new thing when I was growing up. Having a multicultural family, I don't take that for granted. And now, being the storyteller, I'm enjoying this book all over again, feeling both pride - and a little sadness - as my little bird takes off in flight, and soars a little higher each day.
An excellent read aloud.......2000-04-29
This is a sweet story that both my 3 year old daughter and I love. The ending chokes me up every time I read it. My daughter loves the rhythm of the rain falling on Momo's umbrella: Pon polo, pon polo, polo polo pon polo.

My favorite rain book.......2006-03-09
I love this darling little book. A little girl goes out with her red umbrella just in case it rains. It does rain and she puts up her umbrella, which is very small and just the right size for her. On each page, however, she is joined by newcomers seeking shelter from the rain: a little dog, some kittens, some rabbits, a lamb, etc. It's fun to watch the umbrella magically grow on each page until it's huge and big enough to shelter the little girl and the entire menagerie including a great big bear! The simple illustrations and text are perfect for the very young.
I think this book has been out of print for way too long - time to bring it back, and while the little edition is just right for lap cuddles, a nice big format would be better for reading to groups.

Customer Reviews:
Simple sequence and cheery characters for young readers.......2000-05-01
For the second time, noted Mexican-American novelist and poet Saenz turns his hand to the picture book. Grandma Fina likes to walk through her neighborhood carrying her old umbrella [or parasol, if you prefer] to keep her cool during the hot days. As she greets her friends and relatives on her walk, they all notice how tattered the umbrella is, and each decides-- individually-- to give her a new one for her birthday. And so she receives 9 new umbrellas, which she cheerfully shares with her friends at the retirement center. The repetitive nature of her greetings and the thoughts of her neighbors about her umbrella will please young readers or listeners, who will be able to predict what will happen next or even to join in with the conversation. The illustrations are bright and cheery. Spanish phrases are worked seamlessly into the English text [just as Spanish and English flow together in the American Southwest], and a complete Spanish version of the story is provided as well-- the English is printed in black, the Spanish in green. Charming and sweet, "Grandma Fina" is sure to please.

Book Description
On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on umbrellas, parasols, walking-sticks, and similar articles, and their parts in Australia face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying umbrellas, parasols, walking-sticks, and similar articles, and their parts to Australia? How important is Australia compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of umbrellas, parasols, walking-sticks, and similar articles, and their parts vary from one country of origin to another in Australia? On the supply side, Australia also exports umbrellas, parasols, walking-sticks, and similar articles, and their parts. Which countries receive the most exports from Australia? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for umbrellas, parasols, walking-sticks, and similar articles, and their parts in Australia. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for umbrellas, parasols, walking-sticks, and similar articles, and their parts for those countries serving Australia via exports, or supplying from Australia via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where Australia fits into the world market for imported and exported umbrellas, parasols, walking-sticks, and similar articles, and their parts. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for Australia in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that Australia is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize Australia compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes.
