I enjoyed this book and the thought that a damaged vet can find his way by helping others makes a good read. I am of the Vietnam era and normally stay away from war stories. But vietnan revisited through Allen's memories was an eye opener.
A Masterpiece . . ........2006-11-11
I'm not going to review this novel - others have already done so. Some folks thought it was too long, others didn't care for the Vietnam introduction. But I was there - Vietnam in 1970/71 - and can attest from personal experience that Ms. King captures the heat, the sensations, the fear...and the Green to perfection. And the intro is vital to understanding the demons that drive Allen Carmichael.
So, even if you think you don't like 'war stories', stick with it...please! You'll be rewarded with a fascinating character study and a complex psychological thriller.
You may also come to understand why so many of those who fought in Vietnam took years to put the pieces of their life together (and why some never could) and how Abu Ghraib and other Iraqi 'incidents' occur 30 years later.
Ms. King continues to amaze and challenge. . .

I love Laurie King's books. She's one of the few authors that everyone in my family loves! (we all are massive readers)
I wanted to throw a quick review up here because I just finished this book, and I think it's her best one yet. The weaving of the story was nothing short of masterful.
I love how clever Laurie King's books are--she's got a quick and well educated mind, wiht a writing style to match. And in this book it all comes together.
I had a hard time getting through the Vietnam section early in the book, and might have given up reading if I hadn't such faith in the author. I'm glad I kept going.
Keeping Watch.......2005-10-26
Laurie King has done it again and even more. This book delves heavily into the psyche of the Vietnam era and therefore a large slice of American emotional history. It is not always a "pretty" read but it is definately quality. It is filled with underlying questions of personal choices of right and wrong, moral and evil, remains to haunt you.
Intriguing story.......2005-07-10
I'm a big fan of the Mary Russell Holmes series, so I decided to read this book, since it was by the same author. It's a quite tautly-written thriller, that finally moves along rather briskly once the main plot gets into gear. My one quibble with the book was that I felt that it took much too long for the story to move. The author, I presume, was attempting to set the stage for what was to come in the main plot, but I just felt it was much too far into the book before the action took off. Once it did, however, it was very well done, and quite an enjoyable read.

Life's Little Journeys.......2002-02-21
I love all things Irish. Fred Johnston is Irish and so is his deft work. But, more than just Irish, Johnston's book is insightful, perceptive and poignant. Johnston inteligently chronicles the often difficult journeys we all make in our lives. These are stories of interesting people...just like you and me. They are interesting stories because of the trials, the joys, the doubts, the failings, the pain that they suffer. If this sounds familiar, it should. These are beyond-Irish characteristics. They are human ones. I love Johnston's Irishness and his humaness.

Not for Moebius fans.......2004-06-19
As a fan of Moebius I found this very disappointing. Moebius is known for his Sci-Fi/fantasy and westerns. The artwork in the SF work is amazing and the stories are usually pretty good too. The westerns rely mostly on the story and the art work is OK. Icaro has a story that moves glacially slow and the all black and white art work is pedestrian at best. Did Moebius really have a hand in this?? Yes, it's pretty clear from the images that he did, but the effort is Way below Airtight Garage, Incal, Arzach, Lt. Blueberry, etc. Two thumbs down.
Freedom Learned Cannot Be Denied.......2004-04-19
Icaro is a strange boy and this is his story. We begin just before his birth where his mother is dreaming of flying while in labor. In her dream she plummets, awakes and Icaro is born. But Icaro is not like other babies. Icaro defies gravity. Icaro also seems to be the result of some genetic tampering. Icaro is then placed into study.
Twenty years later, Icaro is kept in a converted mining facility. There he has grown up and never seen the sky. Although twenty years have passed, the controlling characters seem not to have aged a single day.
But Icaro is not the only odd character. The city is being attacked by rebels that can explode at will. There is some hinting to their origins.
But the real story is that of Icaro as a young man. Although he knows no other life, there is a growing need in him. He seeks freedom, the sky, love and possibly lust. His flying abilities allow him a great freedom of movement should he escape his cage (a large domes atrium).
This first volume ends with Icaro attempting freedom. I look forward to the next volume of this intriguing story.
