Book Description
Former cop, currently co-owner of the House Mouse housecleaning service, and freelance p.i., Callahan Garrity raises eyebrows when she accepts an assignment from the most hated woman in Atlanta -- a wealthy white socialite who killed a young black girl in a drunken hit-and-run and was punished with no more than a slap on the wrist. Even Callahan's "Mice" are grumbling.
But when a roadside murder turns up the heat on the racial tensions that have been simmering dangerously since Whitney Albright Dobbs received her laughably light sentence, Callahan realizes she'll have to pull out all the stops to trap a mean, mad killer -- for the sake of justice and a city that's threatening to explode.

A Great Series!.......2001-06-18
I love this series and it simply gets better and better. If you're new to this series, take advantage and begin at the beginning. The stories are interesting without being overly done or contrived. The characters are complex and welcomed visitors. Trocheck really has something here.
Doughnuts and crack.......2000-10-12
I came to this one after "Every Dead Nanny" and "Happy Never After" so for once I'm reading a series in the right order. I thought this was the best of the three. The plot is believable from beginning almost to the end (I never quite buy those heroine-save-in-the-nick-of-time scenes but they seem obligatory in this female private eye genre which is a descendant of romantic suspense). It unfolds piece by piece rather than being a series of interviews and the murderer is the kind of surprise that has you turning back pages and saying "why didn't I think of that?" Some great writing. I loved a scene where she describes a vivid temptation to buy Krispy Kreme doughnuts and then looks across the street and describes a crack-buying transaction.
I really wanted to like this book but I couldn't.......1998-05-22
I was looking for something that would show the Atlanta I know and love, but the main character just was too self-righteous; one who appears to be so open minded, but had clearly never even considered riding a MARTA bus. The plot idea was original, but I was not suprised by the ending given the main character's leanings. I loved the descriptions of the area and all the other characters; they were all so more grounded in reality. If the author considers writing about them and less about her heroine, I'll definitely read it.

Intensely dynamic read!.......2007-02-23
Ever wonder how something that feels so right is so wrong? Especially when it comes to giving your heart away?
Jackie Frackman, human resources consultant, finds herself asking that very same question when she meets Beth Novatny. Beth attends the seminar Jackie is there to conduct and attraction between the two hits hard and immediate. Unfortunately it's soon evident that it means much more to one than it does to the other.
Jackie begins to pursue a relationship with Beth even as friends advise her against it. But what do you do when your head says one thing and your heart another...and your heart wins? Soon there are several reasons surfacing as to why a relationship between the two women is a bad idea. One of them...Beth, it seems, has a lover that she's unable to break away from. Why? Could it be that she really doesn't want to?
Time passes, a relationship begins and so does trouble. Trouble from Beth's lover who isn't ready to let Beth go. As problems continue to unfold Jackie finds herself facing a troubling question...to what extent is this lover willing to go to keep Beth? Who will win Beth's love, the old lover or the new one?
There is another someone vastly interested in the answer to that question. A woman who knows they would hold and treasure Jackie's heart if only Jackie would let her.
Jane Vollbrecht, author of the meaningful and intriguing Picture Perfect, once again entertains her reading audience in Heart Trouble with a story of life, love's tough lessons, and that if you will only see...the one for you is there to find. With two upcoming novels, In Broad Daylight, released this month and Close Enough, to be released in August 2007, this author is sure to give an appreciative audience more than enough reason to continue holding a place on their bookshelves for this terrific writer's works.
Two very unappealing characters.......2007-01-29
Heart Trouble presents a reader with an interesting dilemma. The story is well told, but the personalities and behaviors of both of the lead characters make them unappealing and but at times it makes it difficult to focus on the story.
Jackie Frackman is a management consultant who travels the country giving seminars and training sessions to employees of other companies. At one of the seminars Jackie meets Beth Novotny. Jackie's attraction to Beth is overpowering, but she finds Beth confusing. Beth seems to welcome her attention, but is obviously hiding something from Jackie. Undaunted however, Jackie arranges to meet Beth when she is in her area for another seminar. Jackie plans a week of romantic encounters only to discover why Beth is being mysterious. Beth is living with a woman she has been in a relationship with for a few years and the woman is abusive. Beth assures Jackie that, once she's found a way out of the relationship, they can be together forever, but Beth is closeted, secretive and doesn't mind telling lies to everyone, including Jackie. Beth keeps insisting that, though she is trying, it will take time to end this relationship and Jackie just has to keep hanging on and putting her life on hold until Beth can do that.
In trying to decide how to describe these characters a scene from "Moonstruck" came to mind. It's the one where Cher, after hearing Nicholas Cage profess his love for her, slaps him across the face and yells, "Snap out of it!" That's exactly what Jackie and Beth needed in this book. They see each other across a crowded room and are immediately, passionately in love, though they barely exchange words. Jackie is constantly realizing that she's being made a fool of and in the next breath can't wait to get her hands on Beth. For a character that can make so much sense one minute, it's frustrating that she then turns around and acts like such a goof. The really unappealing character is Beth. The way she meets her partner is creepy, then she cheats on the partner, has all kinds of hang ups and isn't honorable in the way she treats Jackie, though that's hardly surprising based on her other behavior. It makes it almost impossible to enjoy the story when the questions that keep coming up are, "What in the world is wrong with these two?" and "When is Jackie finally going to get some sense about this woman?" Let's repeat that, technically, the book is well written and the story does eventually resolve itself. Perhaps it's a true measure of the author's ability that the story does keep the reader reading even if the main characters aren't very sympathetic. What exactly it is that keeps a person reading is perplexing however. Hopefully, it isn't because the reader sees any of herself in either Jackie or Beth.
Some People Never Learn.......2006-10-20
I'm just going to come right out and say it... I neither like nor respect either of the main characters in this book. However, the talented Jane Vollbrecht takes these confused women on a fantastic journey and brings the reader along for the ride. It's purely the author's gift for writing that makes this book a successful undertaking and one I'm glad I had the chance to enjoy.
Jackie Frackman is a consultant that travels all over the country doing seminars. During a seminar in Atlanta, she meets Beth Novatny and they strike up an on-going, long distance conversation. Jackie has been alone for several years. She throws herself into her job to counteract her loneliness and make it through life. Beth's advances intrigue Jackie and she decides to take a chance. After what seems like only a few hours of getting to know each other, Beth professes her love for Jackie... and Jackie reluctantly admits her love for Beth. Of course, Beth also tells Jackie about her live-in, long-time lover, Sharon. She begs Jackie to "give her time" to get out of the relationship with Sharon... both to minimize hurting the woman and to avoid being the victim of one of Sharon's abusive rampages. Jackie agrees but, months later, is still being dragged along.
Jackie is a seemingly intelligent woman who knows what she wants from life. Although she has been lonely, she doesn't seem like the kind of woman who would allow herself into a mentally abusive relationship... and that's exactly what Beth has to offer. Beth tells little white lies to everyone all the time. Jackie realizes this, but doesn't call her on it, never really considering how many lies Beth has told her.
Beth is extremely non-committal, non-sexual, and is just a mentally unhealthy person in general. It doesn't help that Sharon is abusive. However, except for one short scene with Jackie, the reader only sees Sharon from Beth's perspective. It's hard to tell how much of Sharon's problems are real and how much of it is Beth's little white lies.
It's hard to believe there are people like Jackie and Beth in this world, but I'm sure their situation is more common than I want to know. Jackie must have low self esteem to allow this behavior from Beth. Beth is a user and takes advantage of everyone. I simply cannot like these characters.
Even so, I loved Vollbrecht's first book and was not disappointed by this one. Make sure you're sitting in a stable chair when you read it... you could get dizzy or hurt yourself with all the twist and turns interjected by the author. Highly recommended if you're looking for something a little different
In-depth look at one woman's path through the landmine infested quest to love.......2006-08-27
With the title of Heart `Trouble' I should have expected the troubles experienced by 27 year old Jackie. I was expecting a romance and instead was treated to the astounding journey she experiences as she traverses her way through life. The book spans several years from Jackie being on her own when she moves away from home and her partner of four years. She has been on her own for 3 years when the book begins and we live her life for the next year (1999) very closely with her. The bulk of the story takes place in that year.
I don't want to give any of the twists and turns this author brings to the novel except to say that the last few chapters is a rollercoaster I should have seen coming but didn't.
The excellent humor is what I have come to expect from this author. The writing and editing provide the reader with a novel that reads so fluidly that the end of the book pops up before you know it.
Don't miss the author's other novel `Picture Perfect', I am already looking forward to her next novel Dykes in the Daylight in early 2007
From the publisher's website - Jackie Frackman is a consultant for a human resources firm based in Washington, D.C. Her job keeps her on the road much of the time delivering seminars, but she's grateful for the diversion. Her mother's death a few years earlier threw her family life into chaos. Her distress was further compounded when the only woman she'd ever loved backed out on their relationship. If it weren't for her job, Jackie would have little with which to fill her days.
Beth Novatny, rising managerial star in an office supply company in Atlanta, Georgia, is drowning in her deeply unsatisfying relationship with Sharon Chisholm. When Beth and Jackie meet in a seminar Jackie teaches, the mutual attraction is undeniable. Jackie and Beth acknowledge their love, but their happy life together is blocked by Beth's difficulties in extracting herself from her union with Sharon. As time goes by, there is one problem after another, though Jackie does her best to believe in a future with Beth.
Can Beth break free from Sharon? And can Jackie maintain the conviction in her heart to wait until Beth is finally hers alone? Or will they only succeed in generating the worst trouble of all - Heart Trouble.

Garrity Got Me Again !.......1999-09-19
This is the third book in the C.G. series that I have read and i really enjoyed it. I really enjoy these books because Kathy tells it like it is .I liked the part where she talks about how hard it is to defend yourself when you are accused of being a racist even when your not and also the way alot of people today use it to make the news. The relationship between Edna and Callahan is great and those brothers and sisters are a pain in my butt!!I am also glad she is thinking about giving Mac another chance but lets hope she makes him crawl a little! A little too short!.......2006-09-11
This book was very good, my only complaint is that there are 15 differnt possible endings and each path is not quite long enough. Most of it took place in one day, and you can't fall in love in one day! Over all I'd rate it 4 stars. Very fun, but if you want more than an half and hour read you'll have to try out different paths. If you like these kinds of book, I'd also recommend the series "Hook up or Break Up".

Book Description
Wyvernwood, a deep and mysterious forest in the land of Engmar, is the last known refuge for the descendants of the great and majestic dragons that once ruled the skies. And with them have come most of the remaining mythological and magical creatures of the world. But there is no stopping the encroachment of Men. It is clear to all the creatures of Wyvernwood, that if they are to survive, a new refuge must be found. Lost in the dangerous outer world, prophecy says, are three ancient artifacts: the Diamond Dragon, the Glass Dragon, and the Heart of All Dragons. When the three are united once again, they will point the way to a new home. Harrow, Chan, and Luna are three young dragon triplets. Prophecy says that one of the three will rise to lead the dragons to a new home--but which one?

The Best Book.......2005-04-28
This book is awesome. The plot is interesting and each time you get hooked on a new chapter it goes to a new chapter. It makes you want to keep on reading, I couldn't put this book down, its great.
MISS THIS AT YOUR PERIL!.......2005-03-23
GIVE THIS GUY AN AWARD! this book is by far the most intriguing and enthralling i have read in a long time and as a consiquence i've spent weeks trawling the net to pre-order the sequal. it follows the tale of a trio of dragon triplets, an insane humming bird and the last unicorn who are rudely awakened from their sleepy little forest by human loggers who kidnap a friend. It makes for profound reading and echos Watership Down. i would strongly reccomend this to anyone even vaguely interested in the fantasy ganre or who have read the Redwall serise.
An imaginative and fun world of fantasy!.......2004-05-02
I really liked Dragonkin. I'm new into the sci/fi fantasy genre of books (though I'm a huge dragon fan) and I think this is a really good book, especially for a newcomer like myself. It takes place in an area known as Wyvernwood, where Stormfire, the leader of the Dragonkin, led all fantastic and mythical creatures. It is a place of beauty, of comfort, of refuge. At least until the men of Angmar venture into the borders of Wyvernwood. The story follows Stormfire's three hatchlings, Chan, Harrow, and Luna; as well as an unlikely trio of friends composed of the last unicorn, an artist dragon, and a forgetful hummingbird. A previous reviewer said that the characters, esepcailly the hummingbird, Bumble, use very modern catch-phrases and sayings which don't belong in a fantasy world. But I disagree, the language of the characters is modern, not shakespearian, and the modern phrases bring humor into the story too. Another review mentioned the editing going downhill in the last quarter of the book, which I unfortunately agree with. Hopefully Mr. Bailey will choose a different editor on Dragonkin: Book II. My only complaint is that the story seemed like it was more about the side story of the unicorn, the artist dragon, and hummingbird than Chan, Luna, and Harrow, though they all tie in together in the long run. All in all, I really enjoyed this book and am very excited about the sequel.
Wonderful Book! Robin is a wonderful story teller!.......2004-04-30
I bought this book on a whim because I was intrigued by the idea of a book from the point of view of the dragons and mythical creatures of fantasy. It turned out to be a great book and a wonderful story!! I even preordered the sequel! :)
Robin Wayne Bailey is a wonderful story teller and the characters are very loveable! I could easily imagine Marina (introduced in the prologue) recalling stories to her child of the adventures of the animals of Wyrvenwood. People who argue that the "real life" based jokes are "stupid" are taking things meant to cause the reader to smile a little to seriously. Besides I can recount numerous other fantasy novels that do similar things, The Xanth Series by Piers Anthony for instance!
Throughout the book the animals discover more about life outside Wyrvenwood, humans, each other, and ultimately themselves. The reader can really feel for the characters and grow to love them!
"There isn't a drop of magic left in the world, my friend, and yet I wish there were. We long for it, and we hope, sometimes we dream that maybe over the next hill, or in the next valley, or on some high mountaintop there's still just a little bit left - if we could just find it." -- Marian the Unicorn.
Thank you Robin, for showing us just a little drop of that magic in your wonderful book and allowing us to dream a little more!
Fun, but something is out of order ..........2004-01-19
Is this book an epic fantasy? No, but it sure is a lot of fun to read. The entire book is taken from the point of view of the mythological creatures rather than from man's point of view - a wonderfully intriguing switch that grabbed my attention and held it throughout the entire storyline. Surprisingly, the author chose to have one of the most original creatures (Bumble) who regularly contributes some of the most hilarious comedic relief scenes in the book utter lines that simply could not exist in that fantasy world. Lines like, "One if by land, two if by sea" for example that clearly come from revolutionary American history are so out of place that it breaks the reader out of the fantasy world and unavoidably diminishes the entire work. Also quite surprising were the many grammatical and typographical errors in the last quarter of the book. It's almost as if the author tired of checking his work, or worse, that the editor simply didn't care about the quality of this published work. Overall, if not for the two things I've listed I would have given the book 4-Stars for originality and sheer fun, but in the light of these negatives, I must go with only 3-Stars. Should you read it? Sure, it's fun. But, don't expect perfection, just plain fun.
