Book Description

Gumshoe Conrad Metcalf has problems-there's a rabbit in his waiting room and a trigger-happy kangaroo on his tail. Near-future Oakland is a brave new world where evolved animals are members of society, the police monitor citizens by their karma levels, and mind-numbing drugs such as Forgettol and Acceptol are all the rage.
Metcalf has been shadowing Celeste, the wife of an affluent doctor. Perhaps he's falling a little in love with her at the same time. When the doctor turns up dead, our amiable investigator finds himself caught in a crossfire between the boys from the Inquisitor's Office and gangsters who operate out of the back room of a bar called the Fickle Muse.
Mixing elements of sci-fi, noir, and mystery, this clever first novel from the author of Motherless Brooklyn is a wry, funny, and satiric look at all that the future may hold.

4 out of 5 stars First Time's The Charm.......2007-03-08

Lethem's first book doesn't crackle and sparkle with the literary virtuosity of his later works ("Motherless Brooklyn" and "Fortress of Solitude"), but it is a fine example of the nimbleness of his creative spirit.

"Gun" follows private inquisitor, Conrad Metcalf, around a futuristic California, where animals and babies are forcibly evolved, societal compliance is enforced with measurable karma, and it is no longer acceptable to ask questions. Metcalf's latest client has been killed, and the case is being pasted to a patsy by the big dogs in the government pound. Metcalf makes things uncomfortable (for himself as well as everyone else) in his pursuit to uncover the truth.

It's not an easy task. Metcalf is dogged by a trigger-happy kangaroo, the loss of his masculine nerve endings (literally), and people who take legally-sanctioned drugs designed to induce amnesia. He skims off the dross with typical flat-footed panache, employing the standard P.I. lingo (and glum stubborness) made famous by Chandler and Bogey (although not with quite as much skill).

Although, at heart, this is a tribute to the world of literary noir, Lethem gives us a glimpse of his future import by sewing hefty totems into his weird (but fully realized) world. Orwell it ain't, but it sure comes close; Lethem has more to say about how we enslave ourselves, rather than how others do the enslaving for us.

By turns funny and fast-paced, clever and creepy, slick and sharp, "Gun" is a great diversion. It's certainly not an example of an artist at the top of his game, but it IS an example of an artist learning quite deftly how to break all of the rules. More than anything else, this is Lethem showing us just why he's a writer to begin with -- because he loves it. In the hands of someone as talented as he, it's hard for a reader not to share his enthusiasm.

4 out of 5 stars Lethem in the rough.......2007-01-24

It seems that all I ever read these days is Jonathan Lethem and bizarro authors like Carlton Mellick III. The bizarro guys are pretty good and fun to read in a freaky surreal-ish kind of way, but they aren't master craftsmen of the written word. Lethem is. Gun, with Occasional Music is his first book, but probably the 7th I have read. After getting used to the style of his recent work I can really tell how strong his writing has become. He is an excellent author. Even with his first book, you can tell he is an excellent author. But he has definitely improved over time.

PROS: 1) If you like classic crime noir and weird science-fiction, you'll love this book. It is a mixture of those two. Basically, it is just your usual old time crime novel set in a future of mutants and intelligent anthropomorphic animals 2) The mystery unfolds quite nicely. Not only the mystery of the plot, but also the mystery surrounding this odd world Lethem has created. 3) Once you get into it you won't be able to put it down.

CONS: 1) While the writing is good, it is still pretty mediocre in comparison to any of his other works. 2) It was originally published by a sci-fi genre publisher, so it feels like run-of-the-mill genre fiction. So if you are a fan of the literary elements of Lethem's work more than the sci-fi elements you might be disappointed. 3) Though it was intentional, the characters are pretty cliche to that of classic detective stories. This might be a good thing or bad thing. Since I am not a fan of detective fiction, it was more of a con for me.

Overall, I give this book 4 stars. It is definitely worth reading. It's just not as good as most of Lethem's other work. I might have enjoyed it a bit better than As She Climbed Across The Table, but it wasn't as unique and smart as that book. Casual readers might like this one best, so start with here if you don't read a lot of literary fiction. Otherwise, start with Girl in Landscape or Motherless Brooklyn.

4 out of 5 stars Great First Novel.......2006-06-29

Jonathan Lethem's witty first novel is a sci-fi/private-eye romp through the futuristic mean streets of Oakland. Postmodern gumshoe Conrad Metcalf gives Sam Spade a run for the money as he pursues the leaders of a society corrupted by government-sponsored drug addiction. Evolution therapy has spawned the "babyheads" (hard-drinking infants who carouse all night and have adult heads), and their genetically-altered counterparts, the "evolved animals." Remembering and asking questions is discouraged, a state of affairs enforced by "forgettol," "addicttol," and "regrettol." Inquisitors deduct karma points from peoples' karma cards: the sentence for a "karma defunct" is suspended animation.

Metcalf's investigation takes us from a holographic haunted house to sleazy sex clubs, baby-head bars, murder sites and beyond. We meet drugged out femmes fatale, a murdered sheep, a pissed-off kangaroo, folks trying to hide things, others trying to forget, and those who can't remember what it was they were trying to hide. In a world where the printed word is illegal and the news is rendered musically, we can sleep safe knowing that Metcalf is fighting the good fight.

4 out of 5 stars Would you believe it?.......2006-06-11

Midway through reading Motherless Brooklyn, I decided that Lethem was something of a genius and ordered Gun, with Occasional Music without even investigating the plot (I loved the title). When the book arrived, I read the jacket and felt a bit put off by the seemingly preposterous storyline, but decided to give it a shot anyhow. I was rewarded.

If you are considering reading the book and have doubts, read Motherless Brooklyn and Fortress of Solitude first. I think you will then conclude that Lethem is a writer whose books are worth reading.

4 out of 5 stars Over the top, but..........2006-04-22

Lethem can write rings around most writers, but with all his incredible ability to create mood and switch from one unique voice to another, he ultimately does not deliver a satisfying read.
The world of this book is bizarre but believable, with the accelerated evolution treatments (babyheads), and evolved animals, snf free government drugs, etc. The exaggerated wise guy private eye tough guy lingo, broken by unexpectedly hilarious passages (gun - with occasional music) is fun to read, and hard to put down. But the ending does not feel like a real ending, and there are no moral truths here.
I'm not being a baby here; it's not that I want a happy ending, just some sense of closure.

This is for anybody who grew up reading Cat's Cradle in high school and maybe graduated to others with the occasional sci-fi tingle like Houellebecq. A great place to start with Lethem's books. Making metaphors literal (such as the 'evolved ape'), ruminating on the nature of editing our memories, commenting on the soundtrackking of every experience, loss of privacy (--this was written pre-9/11), et cetera... He uses the classic noir set up and keeps you guessing how the story will end up through the last page.

Book Three of the Heirs of Cahira O'Connor was my favorite of the series. I enjoyed the setting - the Civil War - and the development of Flanna's understanding of the real issues of the war. The aspect of a woman doctor in a time when they were not accepted was very well done. Love, loyalty, faith - it has it all...

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Historical Fiction Based During the Civil War .......2006-05-16

This book is the 3rd in "The Heirs of Cahira O'Conner" series. Although I haven't read the 4th, so far this one is my favorite. Not that the first 2 are not good, they are terrific, it's just that this one gripped me from the beginning. I read this 400 page novel in just 24 hours!

Flanna O'Conner is finishing up medical school in Boston when the Civil War begins. She longs for her family in Charleston SC and disguises herself as a soldier in her effort to return to the south. Although Flanna's character has depth from the beginning, her travels deepen her character and trust in God. This is a profound story of sacrifice, loyalty, and how the effects of this war dramatically changed so many lives. These people gave up virtually everything (their lives, family, homes, & work) for a cause they believed in.

Flanna's experience and what is shared in this book really brings significance to the heroism of those who served in the Civil War. The author does an excellent job of researching our country's culture and circumstances during the mid-1800s. At the end she writes two pages on her references. I had no idea that there were 400 women who actually did pose as men in order to serve in the Civil War.

What I love about historical fiction is that it gives me a heart for the people who lived during the time, and a desire to learn more. What a great way to learn about history!!

4 out of 5 stars Great Book Must Read.......2004-08-29

I love this book. Even though I'm just 15. I thought is had an amazing plot and a wonderful ending. The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars is because of the beginning. It was incredibly slow and boring. But I'm so glad I decided to keep reading!

                5 out of 5 stars What a wonderful story!.......2002-05-23

This book is moving...I thought that it brought a new eye to the Civil War. Flanna is in Boston, studying to get her medical degree so that she can return to Charleston and help her father in his practice. However, the Civil War breaks out and Flanna is forced to figure out how she will get home. As in the other Cahira O'Connor books, she dresses as a boy and becomes a soldier.

I thought this book was very well written from beginning to end. The death of the professor is Kathleen's impetus to get back to work on the story of the heirs of Cahira O'Connor. What she finds leads her to wonder what HER role in this will be.

I highly recommend this book to anyone, but please read the other 2 books in the series first. This book will make you want to rush out and pick up the 4th.

5 out of 5 stars Hunt highlights women in history.......2000-05-24

Novelist Angela Elwell Hunt has done it again! Her exciting historical women's fiction series shines with complex stories of gifted women seeking to make a place for themselves in a world, dominated by narrow ideas of women as little more than man pleasers.

Velvet Shadow is the third in a Cahira O Connor series. Flanna O'Connor a Southern bell who defied convention to study medicine in Boston Mass on the eve of the Civil War. Her hopes to take her degree back to the south are shattered by the outbreak of war, cut off from her family she tries to enlist in the Army as a Doctor and prejudice turns her back.

This theme runs throughtout the story as the wealthy Bostonian abolitionists bemoan the fate of slaves, while mistreating their Irish servants. Her keen eye for hypocrisy in society is entertaining. I had not known that some freed blacks also had slaves. Her devotion to research illuminates the Zeitgeist (ruling ideas) of the times. When an aspiring politican pursues her to marry him and forsake medicine, Flanna, like her ancestor and many actual women in the Civil War impersonates a man to join the Union Army. She hopes to make her way home to the south and desert but her destiny as a Doctor calls her to steal supplies to treat the wounded, in spite of threat of exposure, court martial or worse. As a surgeon she becomes the Velvet Shadow who saves men who would have perished without her. Hunt has captured the misery and mismanagement of troops, supplies etc in this heartbreaking war that redefined the history of our country. Again, we are led through a series of heart breaks and changes the character must conquer to survive and thrive.

This book will spark your appetite to read the earlier books in the series that began with The Silver Sword, set in 1400's Anika of Prague must pretend to be a knight in order to escape unwanted attention of a nobleman's son. She plays in integral part in story of Jan Hus, burned at the stake for his religious beliefs.

In the second book, the Golden Cross opens in 1642 when Aidan O'Connor penniless after the death of her father at sea ekes out a living in the slums of Colonial Batavia while her spirit longs for artistic expression. A master cartographer recognizes her talent and senses God leading him to train her. Aidan enters the aristocratic world as apprenticing artist and is coached in fine manners of high born women. She longs to learn and become a wealthy artist to lift her friends from the web of wharf poverty and degradation. Aidan casts aside the brocade to masquerade as a cabin boy aboard the exploration vessel of Captain Tasman to pursue her dream. The voyage is fraught with danger, slaughter and brings Aidan to cling to God. Aidan's voyage leads to unexpected danger, treasure and you'll need to read the book to find out if she settles or succeeds.

As readers we learn in pursuing the talents God has placed within us, we can experience Kairos time creative expansion of time, versus everyday chronos time. This writer broadens my view of the past and gives inspiration to my future.

5 out of 5 stars Historical Fiction Based on the Women in Moses' Life.......2006-06-04

This is a book based on the views of the key women in Moses' life. It is written very much as how a diary would be written, with each woman writing her thoughts, feelings, and perspectives on various circumstances.

The 1st part of the book is focused on Moses' Egyptian mother, Merytamon. While another reviewer stated that this book was slow I found that only to be true during Merytamon's chapters. However, the author filled this portion of the book with many details of the Egyptians' medical procedures, customs, gods, and culture. It was very eye opening and educational. I had no idea that Pharaohs typically married their sisters and daughters in order to preserve the throne. They were very superstitious people, very pre-occupied with death. The author did extensive research on the ancient Egyptians and her resources are listed in the back of the book.

Zipporah, Moses' wife, wrote her perspective of what living was like out in the dessert in a pagan culture. She seemed to be a very faithful woman towards her roles in life. Her meeting Moses, spending time with him, and ultimately marrying him was wonderful to read.

Miryam, Moses' sister, was most interesting. She is portrayed as a strong-willed, prideful, and a somewhat controlling older sister. Her life was filled with resentment and bitterness towards her lot in life. She was self-righteousness and judgmental toward the women in the camp who were not Hebrews (i.e. Zipporah). It was very interesting how God broke her pride and led her toward humility, healing and reconciliation.

Although this is a fictional book, the author did use scripture as her base. She has a Q&A section in the back addressing questions.

This isn't your typical historical fiction romance from Angela Hunt, but it is worth reading, especially since it helps to capture what it would have been like living in the times of Moses.

5 out of 5 stars Educational and beautiful Biblical fiction.......2006-03-26

I finished Angela Hunt's biblical fiction The Shadow Women which recounts the lives of the women surrounding the life of Moses: Pharaoh's daughter, Miryam, and Zipporah. Hunt's strict adherence to Scripture and attention to detail made me truly understand some characters I had been unable to before. Now as I read through the actual passages, I find myself able to visualize events more clearly and with greater understanding. I'm able to connect with the stories more. The Shadow Women is a great piece of Biblical fiction and shouldn't be passed up

                5 out of 5 stars What a great Suprize.......2004-12-02

I loved this book. My friends are asking to borrow it and I dont want to give it up because I want to read it again. I am going to buy another copy to give away. I learned alot about myself through the charactors and it touched me deeply. Even if you dont learn anything, it is a great story.

4 out of 5 stars Another great read by an outstanding author!.......2004-07-03

I am always eager to read a biblical story from a different point of view; to see the events unfold through the eyes of a participant that has never before been given a voice in the matter. In SHADOW WOMEN, you get to view the life of Moses through not one; not two; but three different witnesses: His Egyptian foster mother, Merytamon; his Midianite wife, Zapporah; and finally, his older sister, Miryam.

Merytomon is the daughter and newest wife of Pharaoh. She is barren, believing that one of the multitudinous gods of Egypt has stolen her womb out of jealousy. She knows that unless she produces a son for Pharaoh, she will be demoted from her most-favored-wife position and banished to his harem to live out her life amidst the myriad of wives who have lost the attention of their husband. After learning of the PharaohÕs decree that all Hebrew baby boys are to be sacrificed to the river god, she conspires to take one of these babies and present it to her husband as a gift from the god of the Nile.

In addition to the retelling of Moses rescue from the Nile and his Egyptian rearing, we are made privy to the unique life of one so close to the throne. MerytomonÕs love for Moses is touching and tragic as she suffers under the burden of her deception, knowing that the discovery of Moses true origin would very likely result in not only her death but the death of her beloved adopted son.

After Moses secret is revealed and he flees into the wilderness, we meet Zapporah, his nomadic wife. Here the story takes on new depth as we learn more about the character and life of this remarkable woman.

Finally, we are reintroduced to Miryam, Moses headstrong sister. We see her in a totally new light as the author puts flesh to the bare bones of information we are given in scripture.

Even though the author takes great literary liberty in fleshing out the character and lives of these three women, there is nothing anti-scriptural in her exciting embellishments and therefore, I found them to be most enjoyable and their stories very plausible. I highly recommend you add this to your reading list!

P.S. Be sure to read the quotation before the title page to understand where the author got the title THE SHADOW WOMEN from...very cool!

3 out of 5 stars Not your typical Hunt.......2004-01-24

Angela Elwell Hunt is one of my favorite Christian authors. Therefore, at the release of "The Shadow Women", I practically jumped into a chair to begin my reading.

                I was sorely disappointed.

Hunt is brilliant with character development, and she develops the women of Moses' life- Merytamon (mother), Miriam (sister), and Zipporah (wife)- with her usual vigor. The obvious and expected spiritual themes in this book are outstanding, inspirational, and Hunt does deliver on these two qualities she always brings out in her stories.

My problem is with the pace of the book- very, very slow. We all know this Biblical story so well that, in reading a book about the women in Moses' life, I expected to hear a twist on the tale, new angles, new stories.

Well, I got some new angles for certain, but new stories? Hardly. Hunt retells the entire life of Moses as we know it using the women in his life as narrators. Though I learned several new facts about life in Egyptian palaces and a possible, very different alternate history to the love story of Moses & Zipporah (let's just say the Ten Commandments is its polar opposite), I was expecting more twist and insight into the lives of the "shadow women".

                *potential spoilers*

I know that Hunt can in essence completely retell a biblical story through her series about Joseph, vizier of Egypt. But she did not make such an attempt here. Merytamon dies halfway through the book, leaving her perspective in the cold. Miriam is made out to be a cold-hearted, self centered, conniving old woman up until the last few chapters. The only parts I truly enjoyed reading were Zipporah's, and even hers were far too biblically repetitive.

In short, these are not the women of Moses as we know them. In fact, this book is more about the life of Moses and his human interactions with women who were around them then about the lives and stories of his mother, sister, and wife and their consequent interactions with HIM.

For all its spiritual insights, the book followed Moses too closely and left his women in the dust.

Philip Ginsburg has done it again! Like Poisoned Blood, I could hardly put this book down. Shadow of Death is an in-depth look at a series of murders and the investigations in New Hampshire and Vermont in the 1980s. As I read, I experienced the frustration and the urgency of the detectives and the profiler to catch the killer (or killers). Although the murders remain unsolved, it wasn't for lack of trying. Philip Ginsburg has done a remarkable job in relating the murders, and detailing the victims, the psychologist, and the detectives, to the point where you know them well. Truly one of the best books on a serial murder investigation.

I've reread this countless times. I have ties to the area and was amazed at how little public play this got while it was happening. I still need to know the answer of "who" but it is without a doubt one of the best true crime books ever written

When you first read this book you will probably think this is the best book ever written, I did! I live in New Hampshire and when I read it I was so entriged by the wording that it just pulled me into the book and I thought I was one of the FBI officers working on the case with them. If you like to read Supense Thriller and Murder books you will diffently want to add this book to your collect like I did. I hope you read this book, and enjoyed it as must as I did. Joshua Wolfe: Bounty hunter. Federation Intelligence agent. Former friend, then prisoner, of the horrific alien race called the Al'ar. Master of the arcane Al'ar killing arts. And now Federation renegade, searching for Al'ar secrets in the rubble of an old war and the detritus of human lives.
No one wanted him to learn those secrets. Not the Federation, which had hired him, then made him a wanted man. Not the deadly Chitet cult, who had their own interests in the Al'ar. And not the Al'ar themselves, whose shadows remained in the form of technological wonders of mystery and violence.
His search led him from a mothballed fleet to a private moonlet, to the capital world of the very cult bent on destroying him, to a lethal world of robot protectors . . . and, finally, to an enemy more terrible than anything mankind had yet dreamed of.
Wolfe's only friend was Taen, the last Al'ar.
                  Or was he the last?

She's a master thief as elusive as her name whose dagger is as sharp as her eyes and wits. Where there's a rich merchant to rob, good food and wine to be had, or a lusty fellow to kiss ... there's Shadow. What do the Guild of Thieves, the deadliest assassin in Allanmere, a long-vanished mage, a treacherous swamp, and a gem missing from a temple have in common? Shadow, of course. When Shadow is accused of a theft of guild-wrecking proportions, she forms an unlikely alliance with the strange immortal creature known only as Blade to find out who has framed her and the Guild of Thieves for the theft-and why. Deadly Companion! When shadow has to recover a stolen jewel from the wizard Baloran, her journey is as perilous as her destination. For only Blade can guide Shadow to the sorcerer's lair ... and Blade is an assassin who takes a life as easily as she takes a breath. Shadow's score with Baloran can end only in destruction. But in the final battle, will Blade be at Shadow's side-or in her way?

Reviewed by Kylee J. Yeaman for Reader Views (4/07)

"Shadow Hunt" is one of eleven books by Anne Logston. It is the second book in a seven-book series. The first book is "Shadow." Shadow, a small Elf in a world where most Elves are taller than humans, is the mistress of the Guild of Thieves. Blade is a human assassin, the best in her field. The two team up, somewhat reluctantly on both parts, to track down a magician/sorcerer and the gem that he is believed to have stolen. Most in their community believe that Shadow herself has stolen the gem. Knowing that Blade has a past grievance against the magician, Baloran, Shadow propositions Blade for her help. Shadow dangles in front of Blade the opportunity to pay Baloran back for however he has wronged her.

I did not, unfortunately, read the first book before reading "Shadow Hunt." There were a handful of places in the book that left me feeling like I was missing a piece of information. This in no way, however, made me confused or took away any enjoyment for me.

"Then there was another faint sound, even less than before - perhaps only the rustle of clothing or a hiss of breath - but it was enough for Shadow's sensitive ears. She imagined a line through the fog and, without another thought, followed it directly toward Spirit Lake." What does Shadow find when she reaches Spirit Lake? You'll need to pick up the book and read it! I'm not going to TELL you.

This is a terrific adventure story. I love the fact that both lead characters are female. They are not damsels in need of rescuing. Shadow and Blade are the "kick butt and don't bother taking names" type. This is a book I would gladly let my 13-year-old daughter read. Books with wonderful, strong, witty female heroines are something I enjoy reading and something I want my daughters to read. Girls need that. And as a woman myself, it is something I enjoy reading and unfortunately do not get the chance to read very often.

"Shadow Hunt" would be enjoyed by anyone who, like me, is already a fan of the fantasy/adventure genre, especially for those who like books by Elizabeth Haydon and David and Leigh Eddings.

                    5 out of 5 stars Shadow's at it again!.......2006-08-14

This book belongs to the Shadow trilogy, and in these novels the pace never slows. Shadow is a loveable and feisty elf with wandering feet, eyes, and hands. If you asked her to pick between wine, men, and treasure -- well, she couldn't. But although she denies it, she's pretty fond of her friends, even the humans. Every time you pick up a Shadow novel, expect an adventure, because that's exactly what Shadow's going to give you!

This time around, Shadow's been blamed for stealing something -- and she didn't even do it. The irony is killer, but not as killer as the factions threatening to break apart the city of Allanmere. As Mistress of the Thieves' Guild, Shadow reluctantly concludes it's in everyone's best interests to find the item. She only has one lead, though -- the incredibly powerful man to whom it originally belonged, long ago. But isn't he dead by now?

Her "friend", the notorious assassin Blade, seems to believe otherwise. Blade also seems to have motives of her own, deeply intertwined with her mysterious past. The two end up joining forces to recover the item and exact some revenge, but they're far from unexpected... either of them. Can Shadow squeeze out of this predicament, and save her friends' hides while she's at it? And maybe, just maybe help herself to a little bit of the treasure?

These days, fantasy novels tend to be longer and more "epic", but nothing can replace a good Shadow adventure. If you want a good time with memorable characters and intriguing situations, wrapped up in a fun and fast-moving plot, then don't pass these novels up.

                    5 out of 5 stars couldn't put it down.......1999-10-10

I read this book and couldn't put it down for a minute. I LOVED it! Ms. Logston has done it again by bringing to life a very lovable elf and entangling her in another problem. The creative way she then gets her out kept me on the edge of my seat from page one.
