Still a lot of fun, even after 8 years!.......2006-07-25
Pricing guides are great fun to have, yet they are so negligible since they become outdated within a year or so. This 45 record sleeve price guide bears the Goldmine name and boasts more than 10,000 entries, but having been released in 1998, one can't help wondering where the next edition is (*update: revised edition is in the works!). Compiled by Charles Szabla, the book does have some minor errors (the punk group Courtney Love has nothing to do with Hole's lead singer, nor does the semi-Satanic group Coven have anything to do with Ozzy Osbourne of Black Sabbath) and some of the entries are suspect. Still, there are great pic-reproductions here and information you can't get anywhere else (the Seeds put out a plastic sleeve?! in 1968?!). Very useful still to this day. B+
Extremely useful and fun to browse.......2001-07-05
One of the few good things MTV did for music was that it encouraged record companies to put out more 45 r.p.m. singles with picture sleeves. So for the same price as 45's that just came in standard sleeves (like the black one that just says "Columbia" at the top in thick white letters for example), you'd get a color (usually) picture of the artist (usually). Sometimes they were less interesting, maybe only showing the logo for a movie the song was from, like the hits from `Xanadu'. Often the records were only issued with a sleeve regionally or for just a fraction of the single's general release. Which of course, makes those sleeves rare and the object of irrational collectors' desire. This book shows, however, that picture sleeves were around since the beginning of the "Rock Era" (circa 1955) and before. Plenty are pictured, some rare and many not so rare.
Who knew that the sleeve to Bob Seger's tacky "Horizontal Bop" from 1980 is worth $80 bucks to some people? Or that people are actually looking for the sleeve to "Nightbird" by Stevie Nicks even though the song itself isn't hard to find? Yet I remember having trouble finding Huey Lewis' "The Power Of Love" from "Back To The Future", and it's hardly worth anything. Ditto for "The Lady In Red" by Chris DeBurgh.
There are several guides to records that include information on picture sleeves, but this is the only one I know of that focuses exclusively on sleeves. Great for those with general interest in record collecting, or to see if you've managed to save something that's actually worth something ("Gee, I wonder if this sleeve for the Stones' `Street Fighting Man' is worth anything?"). Obviously of more interest to collectors, but enough pictures to entertain a more general audience.
Useful, informative, and visually entertaining.......2001-02-07
I enjoyed the large amount of illustrations and the nice color section. A broad range of musical genres is covered and is the most complete and detailed cataloging of sleeves to date.
A Must Have for the Record Collector.......1999-08-23
I found this book to be a valuable source of information for the novice as well as the experienced record collector. This book encompasses many musical generes and I find it invaluable source before heading off for those record collecting shows. This book is layed out well, nice to look at, and has almost anything you could think of in it. A must have!

A good guidline for beginner.......2007-07-23
I have started using Illustrator software recently and this book have served a good support for flat sketching the garments for women, men and kidswear. Is also gives tips to prepare portfolio, but you already should know basics of how to use Illustrator programme. It is nicely illustrated book and one can get ideas. But again its a basic book and does not cover all the aspects of flat sketching.
Inspiring and highly informative - excellent for fashion students and the fashion industry!.......2007-05-04
Great book! Even if you are a complete beginner you will find this book an informative and useful resource. It gets you up and running quickly with really simple, step-by-step, illustrated techniques for fashion computing using current software.
In my fashion design studio, we predominatly use CorelDraw, Illustrator and Photoshop, and found this book informative for each of these packages. It covers the basics - how to create flat drawings from vests, skirts, shirts, dresses to pants, and then moves on to producing mood and design boards, visualizing your design ideas using Photoshop. The section on creating a digital portfolio is also vital in todays digital world. Plus it covers womenswear, menswear and childrenswear.
It is well illustrated with great examples of flats, illustrations and fashion presentations from illustrators and designers in the fashion industry and from top fashion schools and universities globally.
dissappointing.......2007-02-27
This book has great pictures of fashion illustrations and is helpful because it gives instructions for 3 different CAD platforms, but as far as giving explicite directions on "how to", I found it lacking in substance. It seems that the really great stuff in the book was still hand drawn, scanned in and manipulated a bit with Photoshop. If you are absolutely brand new to these programs and need help gettting started it might help you. For me, it will be more of a pretty book to look at once in a while rather than a reference for problem solving.
Top Marks!.......2007-01-29
It is fantastic! Top Marks!
By following the easy steps laid out in the chapters, I cannot believe how simple it is to draw and color my flats, scan and manipulate my fashion drawings and then bring it all together to create my presentations in Photoshop.
I use Illustrator and Photoshop primarily at fashion school, and the other books I own do not explain the tools and techniques as simply as this one does...plus the examples are all fashion and textiles based! For the price it's great value.
Highly Recommended Fashion Design CAD Book.......2006-02-10
This book is absolutely fantastic, it is easy to follow and inspiring. It shows simple techniques to create flats and fashion presentations using Illustrator and Photoshop. It even showed me how to create my flats using CorelDRAW. The techniques are simple and relevant and very well explained. It includes inspiring images and artwork by other designers and illustrators. It also explains how to create a digital portfolio. I found it very useful on my Fashion Design CAD course and will continue to use it even when I graduate.

Customer Reviews:
Not very helpful........2006-05-22
This was sadly disappointing and did not really talk about how to do anything but rather how CAD for design was being used all over the industry. I would think that a book titled CAD for Fashion Design would actually show you how to do CAD for fashion design.
this book is not very helpful - and it was written in 97.......2002-09-05
Especially with that title, you would expect alot of info on CAD for fashion right? Maybe see things like; how you would create patterns, even 3-D representations, or create prints and colors for fabrics, where I might look for resources on manufacturers and software providers, etc. Well, there are countless mentions in the book of people who use CAD for tons of various things, but almost no mention of HOW any of those people go about it. In some instances the writer is like: yeah, this internet thing is great for selling clothing, web sellers can actually superimpose different colors onto the same garments! yipee. You get the picture, OLD, and not really hands-on at all, more like an informationless overview.
Fashion Designers must have this book..........2000-06-27
Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) is used in every field of Fashion. Fashion Designers who work with different types of Design programmes, must read this book in the beginning. This book is so easy to read and understand for beginners. It also has a 3.5'' floppy disk containing of apparel images. It's worth to buy...

To much unnecessary information........2007-01-13
There may have been only a few of the pages of the book that were useful the rest was just extra unnecessary information. The book was in so bad shape it seemed like it was lift in the rain for a few nights.
Computers offer a lot more than this.......2001-09-21
I guess this might be good for someone who doesn't know how to use a computer---but in design---who doesn't today?
I've been designing a long time---and it is a lot more than what this book has to offer. Not a good value for the money.
Nothing new here.......2001-05-06
Seems like the book is going to really help you learn how to design while you're reading the first few chapters-but then it falls apart. First you have to go through a bunch of basic stuff-that anyone knows---and then if you know ANYTHING about computers it is is nothing more than the tutorials or help menus of different software programs.
You cannot live without this book!.......2001-04-01
I cannot say enough about this book. I thought that to be a fashion designer it was important to be in a big city like Los Angeles or New York. This book proved me wrong. When I arrived at a top fashion design school in LA I presented the teaching staff with this text. They were beside themselves. They all agreed it was the best text they had read concerning fashion design on computers. However, no one at my top notch school felt they had the skills to teach the material. That was their loss! This book is wonderful because even a beginner can jump right in and start designing. The easy step by step instructions and clear screen shots make it so easy to succeed. You will be blown away by your own work. Even if you have experience with designing on the computer, like I did, just skip right to the intermediate or advanced parts of the book. You will not believe how greatly your work will improve. Anyone who expects to compete in fashion design needs to own this bible for Fashion Design on Computers. My only regret is paying $20,000 for a two year education in fashion design when I learned more from this $50 book in just weeks.
It really isn't about fashion design.......2001-03-31
I bought this book thinking I could learn how to design clothing on the computer. Instead, there are a lot of chapters about basic computer information, which I already knew. Anyone could learn that stuff just by knowing how to turn on a computer, using a help menu or taking a class in photoshop. I was really hoping to learn about making patterns, designing clothes and then changing shapes around to make really neat clothes. Instead the book talked about saving files, making shapes, finding fashion sites and sales stuff. To me the book is very disappointing, and too expensive.
