Book Description
The aim of Gold-Hall and Earth -Dragon is to re-create as fully as possible for modern readers the original force of the poetic language of Beowulf. Lee makes use of a wide, archetypal literary context for Beowulf to provide illuminating parallels and contrasts with poems and fictions from other times and places. He demonstrates how the poem's symbolic system reveals itself through the metaphorical workings of the Old English words, patterns of imagery, and more general narrative structures, and how the poem might have been experienced and interpreted by the Anglo-Saxons in the light of other Old English poems. The critical tools that Lee uses - combining certain techniques of New Criticism and close reading with postmodern theories of the self-referentiality of language and with Northrop Frye's conceptions of structure and polysemy in literature - make possible a fresh new account of Beowulf as a work that is very much alive in its poetic language, a finely wrought symbolic work of imagining, still resonant with meanings old and new.
Customer Reviews:
Kennings and the Christian Context.......2000-05-25
The book is divided into two major sections.
The first section's greatest contribution is its perspective on individual Old English words. If you are intrigued by kennings, then there are two or three interesting chapters in this book which seem to offer a novel treatment of the subject. This work has a comprehensive bibliography and seems solidly based in text.
The Christian context, in structure, language, character, etc. is the overarching theme of the second half of the book, which is divided into chapter length essays. This section would be most useful to someone investigating the pagan/Christian juxtaposition in Beowulf. At times I disagreed with various points/premises, but the overall argument was compelling.

Book Description
The quoit brooch style, a decorative style of animal and geometric motifs, is unique to southern England in the fifth century AD, with the greatest concentration of such items occurring in Kent. Suzuki defines the style through an analysis of its design organisation, and, by comparing it with near-contemporary styles in England and on the continent, he identifies those features which make it unique. He argues that the quoit brooch style was made and remade as part of the process of construction of new group identities during the political uncertainties of the time, and sets the development of the style in the context of the socio-cultural dynamics of an emergent post-Roman society. The rigorous archaeological analysis of the style and the study of its historical implications in the light of written sources illuminate the wider issues of social interaction in a period of change, and the formation of cultural identity. SEIICHI SUZUKI did his Ph D in linguistics at the University of Texas at Austin, his MA in medieval studies at the University of York, and he is currently Professor of English and Germanic Studies at Kansai Gaidai University, Japan.

An excellent overview blending visuals with a running commentary on fashion's influence.......2006-01-02
The history of the 20th century can be revealed through its fashion trends, and Gerda Buxbaum Icons Of Fashion: The 20th Century proves this with an overview of fashion trends and revolutions. Yes, there are the icons of fashion to testify to these changes: Chanel, Karan and others - but also fine photos capturing styles ranging from body stockings to military and cocktail dress; all contained in an excellent overview blending visuals with a running commentary on fashion's influence.

Beautiful and Comprehensive.......2003-01-09
I have only just begun this book (20 pages in), and I am enthralled. So many fashion books are written chronologically, so this book, arranged by theme and designer, is an interesting change. The pictures are gorgeous, many of them are in color, and every other page contains an essay on various topics. The topics range from an influence on fashion, a particular designer, themes in collections, or a period of history. Included are also short timelines of the careers of designers from the last century. This book covers a wide range of topics, and gives the reader a comprehensive look at the past century in fashion. I would not recommend this book for someone who wants a chronological look at the development of fashion trends, because the articles skip from the thirties to the Victorian era to the twenties. It is interesting, colorful, and even educational.
A unique approach.......2000-07-18
This book takes a unique approach to the fashions of the past century. Arranged by theme and idea rather than chronologically, the book is a breath of fresh air in the realm of "fashion books". Each entry is written by someone with close knowledge of the subject, and so is more personal than a faceless editor. Overall, I thought the book was really interesting and a great read.

Elegant little volume.......2007-02-20
This handsome little paperback features excellent photographs of some of the period costumes preserved in the Kyoto Costume Institute, in Japan. Details of embroidery, and accoutrements like hats and camisoles, etc., are remarkable. The exquisite garments range in date from the lavish era of Marie Antoinette through the late 20th century, and include pieces from major couture houses still active today. All in all, a nice selection of works from the Institute's collection. Readers wishing to see additional costumes should access the Institute's web site, which is available in both Japanese and English.
Fashion. from the 18th to the 20th century (Icons).......2006-08-26
The book has beautiful photographs. Short descriptions of the times are given with each period. Good for a general overview and to see some detailing of garments. Your would need another book if you were doing an indepth study. I do love the photos in this book. This would be a good companian to one with more written information..because of the photos. The BIGGEST issue I have is that I bought the book brand new and after the first week the pages started falling out. So I gave it a lower score because of book construction. I would recommend this book to a begining designer or someone considering a design career or as a companian book to one with more written details.

Customer Reviews:
Starlicious!.......2007-01-13
This book is so pleasing I made sure I bought two copies. Very
Beautiful fashion summaries for some very beautiful Hollywood leading ladies. My favorite fashion icons are Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, and
Dolores Del Rio. I wish the author would do another book that highlight current fashion icons such as Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Kidman, Halle Berry etc.
I like this revised edition.......2000-01-06
I bought the hardcover edition -- it was my favorite fashion book. But now, the revised edition with the introduction that involves new stars and their photos (Gwyneth Paltrow, Whoopi Goldberg, Drew Barrymore and Cher) adds a new dimension to the story. I'm really happy and for a paper back, the quality is EXCELLENT. Thanks Patty Fox!
Great look at Hollywood style icons.......1999-07-20
This is a lovely book with wonderful photographs of Hollywood fashion icons. Another thing that is great about this book is that it features those who are not as popularly remebered, such as Delores Del Rio, along with more popular icons such as Audrey Hepburn. Great book! Highly recommended!
A fantastic book!.......1998-12-18
I think this is the best Hollywood fashion book there is! The photos are great and the stories are fun.

Lavish and Beautiful.......2001-08-23
This book truly captures the spirit and ideology of what makes Italy so wonderful. Filled with pictures and articles, you will appreciate "La Dolce Vita" even more after you examine this work of art. Highly recommended.
Amazon.com
Every one of us has, at some point, forged a strong bond with a pair of shoes. Perhaps the relationship was with a gnarly old pair of Converse All-Stars (complete with an aroma that would make a grown man cry), or maybe it was with a pair of leather-lined Italian moccasins that were so expensive your credit card went into convulsions.
A Century of Shoes features a feast of shoes from throughout the 20th century. Every imaginable shoe is here--photographed in full color and accompanied with a vignette of soulful information. Here are loafers, winklepickers, stilettos, platform shoes, Dr. Martens, Wellington boots, and sandals--some are practical, others purely fashionable. Shoes were first recognized as a fashion accessory in 1919, when Vogue magazine ran a story entitled "New Shoes for Cinderella." Shoes and fashion were now inextricably linked--and the next few decades witnessed an explosion of new styles and new designers. The book previews the most famous fashion innovators--Andrea Pfister, with his unique brand of fun but feminine designs; Roger Vivier, who reinvented the court shoe; and Joan Halpern, who created fashionable but comfortable women's shoes. Of course, in the latter part of the 20th century it is the sports shoe that has become a fundamental fashion statement for the younger generation. The phenomenal rise of Nike and other manufacturers makes for a fascinating read.
It's okay to admit that you have a shoe fetish--and A Century of Shoes will make this obsession all the more pleasurable. --Naomi Gesinger
Book Description
This pictorial history of the last century of footwear explores the function and evolution of the shoe in all its glory. From elegant ankle boots, Perugia pumps, and David Evins' shoes for the stars, to Patrick Cox "wannabe" loafers and Nike sneakers. Includes over 250 color photographs.
Customer Reviews:
So last century!.......2000-04-17
Great book, but slowly becoming out of date. Great pictures. Divided into sections which include stillettos and loafers. The more "modern" shoes featured are definitely more interesting. Good review of the shoes of last century, not much insight into future design although the last two pages are dedicated to this topic.
A good source of background history of shoes........1999-10-02
If you want to know the history of shoes, then this is he book one should read. However, it is not as informative as I expected. This book will become dated soon as there are not much information on the future of the shoe industry. It would be more informative if the author also includes history of shoes from other parts of the world like the Asian region.
A great reference book on contemporary footwear fashions.......1998-10-03
Although many of the images are familiar to footwear 'sweeties' this book offers the shoe novice a great insight into 20th century footwear design. It is easy to follow and a welcome piece of coffee table literature. Every home should have one. And I look forward to future publications in this design series. Well done!
History and advertorial in one slick package.......1998-02-12
A comprehensive and interesting read. Many images are very familiar and have appeared in other shoe texts (eg Salvatore Ferragamo's). Snippets of information about current designers are topical and interesting. More information on the links between shoes design and haute couture would also have been useful. I'm not sure why Amazon have put categorised this in "Business and Investing" - it should be in Art or Art and Fashion.

Enlightening.......2003-07-29
Introduces the reader to the name brands of the elite. Sometimes the air of entitlement the upper-crest buyers have is a little nausiating, but nonetheless informative and insightful. The author is humorous and does her best to be "one of the people," although even she has the Park Avenue vibe.

This book is an endulgent trip into the world of fashion. I now have a burning desire to own Manalo shoes and a Chanel suit. And I'm writing a college essay on it. Thanks, Dodie!
