Good, Comprehensive, and Heady.......2007-02-15
There's good and not so good in this book. The good is, it is very comprehensive, well organized, and authoritatively written. The bad news is, many of the concepts are complicated and difficult to follow. The writer assumes you understand many things because he doesn't bother to verbalize them very well. This is typical of an academian in my experience. Academian's like to throw something out there and wait for you to ask them what they mean. Unfortunately, that approach does not work so well in a book. To his credit, if you dwell on the ideas long enough they eventually do sink in and approach brilliance. So understanding this book is like understanding art. It takes a while to digest. That said, I recommend the book and be prepared to have your head expanded. This book turns over every stone in the quest to better understand drawing.
As an example here is a random passage I picked describing "Location and Proximity". "The relational energies of location and proximity are produced by the association of like or unlike elements according to their position on the picture plane or in a field of depth." You see what I mean? You gotta love it.
Book Description
Providing a concise but comprehensive survey of all matters pertaining to drawing the human figure, this well-illustrated and accurate guide demonstrates the interplay of structure, anatomy, design and expression in sound figure drawing, and shows how the careful integration of these four factors is essential in drawing the figure in a compelling and lucid manner. Focuses on the figurative and abstract considerations of drawing observed or envisioned human forms, and takes a broader view that regard the figure in its context (i.e., draped, nude, partial). Contains figure drawings from old and new masters alike, representing a wide range of styles and themes, and provides a variety of "Suggested Exercises" at the end of each chapter to reinforce issues and concepts under discussion. Fifth Edition include a new chapter ("A Gallery of Visual Resources") containing approximately 45 photographs of male and female figures, plus over 20 additional old and contemporary master drawings.

Figure Drawing Class In A Book!.......2007-07-02
Online I did some research to see what books art schools and classes are using this one as well as a few others kept coming up! I am self taught due to time constraints, but I feel that though I didn't have a professor standing over me giving me advice, I could still gain a decent amount of information just by reading and applying the things learned in my drawing. The suggested exercises are invaluable and will take a while if properly done. I suggest using this book only after getting a basic understanding of anatomy, even though this book covers anatomy. Get a strictly anatomy book like Peck's, Richer's, or Goldfinger.
Best Figure Drawing Book Ever!.......2001-02-15
Recommended text for any figure drawing class, ages 14 to adult. Gives the artist many excellent samples of all mediums. The chapters devoted to basic anatomy are easy to understand and a pleasure to tackle for any ability level. Drawing is broken down into Four well illustrated categories : Structure, Anatomy(skeletal and muscular), Design, and Expression. A "best buy"!

Gender with an Attitude.......2005-08-26
This book is an introductory textbook about many facets of gender. Topics covered include: the definition of gender, theories of gender, gender and the body, gender and development, gender and relationships, gender as social performance, gender and sexuality, gender and education, gender and work, gender and health, gender and the media, and gender and power. At the beginning of each chapter is an outline of section headings, followed by a list of learning objectives. Immediately before the main text of each chapter is a short anecdote for thought or discussion involving the topic featured in the chapter. Interspersed in the text are boxes with "Critical Thinking Challenges," designed to get readers to stop and ponder claims or issues more deeply. There are also feature boxes with short articles about specific topics in more depth or across cultures. Technical terms appear in bold print in the text and are defined at the bottom of the pages on which they appear. At the end of each chapter is a summary section, with main points listed as bullet statements, and suggestions for using the InfoTrac online subscription resources. The chapters do not have study questions or suggestions for written exercises. End material includes references (50 pages!), a name index, and a subject index. The book is illustrated with numerous graphs, illustrations, and photographs.
The depth and quality of research that went into this book are highly commendable. The author summarizes an enormous quantity of research, providing both a historical perspective and an update on current developments, and synthesizing the varied results into coherent chunks for those who are just beginning to explore the field. Some topics are presented more evenly than others, however, and in the area of development of gendered behavior, Galliano seems to be strongly in the camp of those who claim that such behavior is mostly learned through cultural practices rather than due to genes and hormones. In general, Galliano comes across as having a very strong feminist agenda that drives her manner of presenting the research, rather than striving towards a more objective approach.
I'm glad that I wasn't required to read this book for a course, because Galliano's style, particularly in the opening chapters, is excruciatingly condescending, to a degree that I have never seen before in a textbook. She starts off the text by arguing to readers that they don't know anything about gender, and what they do know is wrong. While that may be true to some extent, a more positive pedagogical approach would be to focus on what the readers actually do know, and build up from there, rather than tearing their self-confidence apart from the beginning. The style of writing is uneven-in some chapters, the text is very matter of fact, simply reporting the research and synthesizing the results in a professional manner. In other chapters, Galliano slips into informality, denigrating both the research and the readers, as for instance, when noting inconsistent experimental results, she writes "Uh-oh! At this point you may need to transform that rigid safety helmet [which she has earlier warned readers that they will need when reading about this research] into a more flexible critical thinking cap." As a mature reader, I find such comments particularly off-putting, and I suspect teenage readers might find them even more so.
In addition to these stylistic problems, the text also contains a number of inaccuracies, or possible typos. For example, the text states, "gonadal development in males is affected whenever an X chromosome is present." Well, that's true, since an X chromosome is virtually always present (except in 0Y males). Perhaps what was meant here was a second X chromosome, but that's not clear from the text. Galliano goes out of her way to include material about cultures beyond American borders for this text, but she is not entirely familiar with the cultures, since she has comments such as "Under Islam, women lost the right to choose their own marriage partner, to manage their own property, and in some societies, the right to obtain divorce." A little more research into the history of Middle Eastern cultures would show that women didn't lose these rights under Islam, since they never had them in that region of the world before Islam. In fact, Islam expanded rights for women living in this region beyond what the pre-Islamic culture allowed them; for example, under Islam, women were given the right to turn down perspective marriage partners, and to inherit at least some property. Hopefully, such mistakes will be corrected in any future editions.
In sum, while the coverage of material in the book is extensive and presented well in some places, in other places, the bias in presentation is inappropriate. If you are looking for a textbook to use for an introductory course on gender, this one might make a potentially good resource to dip from, as long as you avoid the more heavily biased chapters (unless, of course, your intent is to present that bias as fact). And if this book has been assigned reading for a class, take it with a large grain of salt.
Book Description
Description: "Michael Roberts is the Jean Cocteau of the fashion world," wrote the celebrated New Yorker editor Tina Brown in 1997, welcoming her new fashion editor to the most prestigious magazine in the world. Having already served for many years as a style editor (The London Sunday Times, Vanity Fair) and having produced numerous illustrations, photographs, paintings, and columns of fashion criticism for various media, Roberts had already had his name coupled with Cocteau's, but his striking visual style is collected here for the first time. From evocative pen-and-ink sketches to acrylic paintings to intensely witty New Yorker covers created from cut paper, these works capture the fads, foibles, and fashionability of our times. Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of American Vogue, in her introduction to "this beautiful book" calls them "fiendishly accurate satire." And the shoe guru Manolo Blahnik writes, "His drawings grasp fashion moments like a photo could never do." That a major part of the book was created through the painstaking method of paper collage especially appeals to the internationally famed fashion designer John Galliano. He writes, "I have avidly collected his work, along with doing my own collages, for years, and I am honored to be a part of this book." --Grace Coddington

A Modern Master.......2007-01-11
A Modern Master
I had no idea who Michael Roberts was when I came across this book, which idly adorned a naked shelf in the now historic Coliseum Bookstore. As I flipped through the book again and again and again I was awestruck by the sheer number of spectacular plates in one volume. I'd frame them all but wouldn't dare dissect this clothbound collector's dream. Mr. Roberts' artistic prowess is an inspiration--his bold colors, defined shapes that are chiseled as well as a body-builder's pecks, and imagery so striking it burns a place in your memory. Note the Pompeian mosaics--just mind-blowing.
I was so moved by his artistry that I purchased 2 of his earlier works, The Jungle ABC and Mumbo Jumbo, The Creepy ABC. How wonderful to discover the talent, wit and verse contained in these treasures for new readers--what a fun way to learn!
Thank you Michael Roberts for these treasures, I anxiously await your future masterpieces.

This book is a tresure to all who appreciate fashion !.......1999-11-16
If one wants an insight into the mind of the most creative force in fashion, this is the book to get! The escentric John Galliano has been praised as the greatest fashion stylist and designer of our time (all of this praise was given at such a young time in his career). This beautiful book proves why Galliano is the fashion force that he is. A "work in progress" is the term the author uses to describes this book about Galliano. It is not a biography, though it briefly cronicles his childhood and days in St. Martin's School, nor is it a retrospective. What this book does, though, is disect a master at the verge of stardom, from his graduation show at St. Martin's to his stint at Givenchy to his sucess at Christian Dior,as well as his independant line.Beautiful photography shows the reader Galliano's process of creating a collecton from start to finish.Pages from his concept book is shown, giving readers a gimpse into how Galliano thinks and creates.Above all else, the best part is Galliano's creations, and that is the best part about the book.In it,one can see how the master's work evolves from different points in his young career.I highly recommend this book about a master's "work in progress" .
The most beautiful book created........1999-07-29
Thank you Colin McDowell! John Galliano to me is the most talented designer in the world, and I have always been waiting for books to be published. This is very completely story of who he is, how he works, and how he gets inspired which will in turn inspires many other creative people of the same wavelength. The book is very detailed and incredibly beautiful and intricate.

A great book for a great designer.......1998-05-29
If you are a Galliano fan or an admirer of haute couture in general, you will enjoy this beautiful book. With its full color photos and strong graphics, Galliano is a pleasure to the eyes. Filled with behind-the-scenes photos and commentary, as well as photos of his sourcebooks for inspiration, you get to see what goes into the creation of his collections-- which are consistently imaginative and dramatic.

Book Description
It's not only fashion designers who leave their mark on a look: they'd be nothing without make-up artists and hairstylists. Odile Gilbert, one of the most creative hairstylists of all, finds herself in the greatest of demand these days. She works her fleeting, human materials into designs much as a sculptress would, borrowing from historical styles and ethnic languages of form, using feathers, earth and precious stones to fashion the most lavish of creations. This book sneaks a look behind the scenes of the fashion world and shows Odile Gilbert at work and alongside her finished creations. Her Style includes pictures of fashion shows, photographs for magazines and advertising campaigns. It is the result of many layers of fruitful collaboration: stylized with some of the world's best known fashion designers, photographed by the best fashion photographers and modeled on the most famous models of our time.

Amongst my favourite books as a child in Australia.......2007-05-19
I read the Mr Galliano's Circus books over and over as a child (they were my favourite Enid Blyton series along with the Faraway Tree) and recently tracked down some second hand copies on ebay to read to my daughter. She was equally fascinated with the stories which are told from the point of view of Jimmy an English boy who joins the circus with his family. I recently read a biography of Enid Blyton which said she originally conceived wrote a version of this book as an adult book but noone would publish it so she subseqently rewrote it as a children's book. i think this is evident in the fact that the adult characters are much more developed in this book than in other Enid Blyton books and there are plenty of allusions to adult-type concerns (eg, Jimmy's father's unemployment and the family's poverty etc).
Must Read For Every Child.......2001-01-20
As a child in Guyana, Enid Blyton was a staple on my reading list. I remember, fondly, days curled up in a corner with Mr. Twiddle or Mr. Meddle, Mr. Pinkwhistle, The Secret Seven, Famous Five... the list can go on. I loved Enid Blyton. Reading Enid Blyton books stimulated my imagination and took me on countless journeys to far-away, magical places. I highly recommend Enid Blyton books as required reading for any child who enjoys the written word. This author is, in my humble opinion, the BEST CHILDREN'S WRITER OF ALL TIME.
A Childhood Favourite.......2000-12-01
A favourite of mine for many years, this, the first of Enid Blyton's Circus series deserves to go back into print! Adventure, danger, a cast of fun characters, friendship and the realisation of that dream we've all had at one time, of running away to join the circus!
A great Enid Blyton book for all!.......2000-07-08
It's sad this book is out-of-print. Of all books, Enid Blyton loved to write about her circus series. Jimmy Brown is an everyday boy, going to school, etc. UNTIL Dad becomes carpenter for big-shot Galliano's Circus. Mum worries that this isn't the right thing for Jimmy, but somehow the two convince her it is. Jimmy has already gotten to know the circus folk - Jeminma the silly monkey, Lilliput, a small thing of a man, and my favorite - the curly-haired, temperamental Lotta. And so what could go wrong? This series just tells you all the things that go on in a circus when it's not playing. A must-read to circus lovers or - Enid Blyton lovers!
