a good thriller for a stormy night.......2006-09-11
I have read several thrillers by Wendy Corsi Staub and found them all to be very exciting page-turners. In "Dearly Beloved", three women are lured to an old inn on a nearly deserted island in the off-season. The setting is very atmospheric, the characters are well-developed, and the plot is exciting. If you are a reader of thrillers, like me, you will probably really like this book. I especially appreciate that this is not a romance novel in disguise. There are no straining heaving bosoms or taught thighs in Wendy Corsi Staub's writing. Lisa Jackson's endorsement printed on the cover of the Staub books, "If you like Mary Higgins Clark, you'll love Wendy Corsi Staub" is more than accurate, I have found Mary Higgins Clark's books to contain truly horrible grammar, no atmosphere, and characters that are barely two-dimensional. Actually, Mary Higgins Clark's writing consists of plot only in her more recent books, so I would place Wendy Corsi Staub far ahead of Mary Higgins Clark as a suspense writer.
What goes around, comes around.......2006-01-21
This saying could never be more truthful than in this book. Sandy, Liza, and Jennie (pretending to be her twin sister) are all about to make a journey in which not all of them will survive. The past is about to come back to haunt them in the form of a man who has been a part of each of their lives.
Ms Staub has written a good solid thriller, it's not really a mystery because fairly early on she reveals who this stranger is. The intrigue of this book is the unfolding of the story and learning how each woman made an impact on this man's life and how he reacts to that impact. The characters are fun, real, and engaging. If there is a moral to this story, it's be careful how you treat others, you may not live to regret it.
Down right creepy!.......2005-03-04
This book makes you really sit back and think how you treat someone! That is what it is all about, getting revenge on three unsuspecting women who have crossed paths with a truely crazy guy! I have read all Staub's book, except for All the way home, which I plan on purchasing very soon. Staub has become one of my favorite authors. She writes her books in present tense, which was different, but now I wish more authors wrote that way. It really makes the book much more suspenseful and heart pounding. I do have to say, this was not Ms. Staub's best but still quite worth your time. The plot I felt was truely unique. I felt for some of the characters so much that I was mourning them when something bad happened (I am trying to be vaque, so I do not ruin your experience) and that has got to be a good sign in a book. If you haven't given this author a try, I strongly suggest you do.
AWESOME!.......2004-09-08
This was a well-written book and, as usual, Wendy Corsi Staub does not disappoint! The story-line was well developed, as well as the characters, dialogue and plot. It was an extremely quick read, which contained plenty of mystery and intrigue. I would highly recommend this book to any reader.
Moves Right Along.......2004-06-23
This is a good Staub read. Entertaining and fast paced.

PCE student reveiw.......2007-04-16
I highly recommend "The Beloved Dearly" by Doug Cooney.
The words in the book are really clear and describing.
The book is about a boy named Ernie. He is always looking for quick bucks. This time he gets into a money making bonanza: PET FUNERALS!
He hires Dusty to design the mini burial boxes for the pets and Tony to dig the holes, but his best find is a tomboy who can cry on cue.
My favorite scene is when the gang finished working on the funeral yard.
You'll have to read the book to find out what the yard looks like.
My favorite character is Dusty because he always has ideas and a good imagination, also he seems very smart.
The book theme is that your friends are more important then a business.
I love this book because it has so many things that are entertaining: it has some humor drama, sadness, and joy. It makes you feel all theses emotions, happy, sad, funny, excited, and joyful. You will like this book!
It was ok.......2006-10-26
this book is about a 12 year old guy named Ernie who is a natural salesperson guy. He starts a buisiness with pet funerals...woot.
This book was okay...But I just didn't like it. But that dosn't mean other people won't like it. I suggest you check it out of a library before you buy it.
A genuine story.......2006-05-24
Ernie comes upon another money making sceme. With the help of Dusty, someone to decorate the "coffins", Tony, the hole digger, and Swimming Pool, a tomboy who can cry on cue, they start a great business for pet funerals. This story is full of exitement and suspense when some things go wrong for the team of four. A great book.... I have read it a lot!!
I'm 42 and I Loved It!.......2005-11-08
My daughter has a list of books to read for a type of competition in her school. I order them for her at the library and she reads them. Every once in awhile I pick one up and read it to be sure they have decent content, etc. This one just looked good to me from reading the back cover and also the illustration. I read it and laughed and laughed. It was very enjoyable. It had serious moments in the book that helped round out what was happening in the story. It was well written. I would have to say that the author, although writing this for children, put in things that adults would chuckle over and enjoy; things you would understand if you watch old black and white movies. It's so enjoyable that I ordered a copy for our family to own. We have 8 children and I think all of them will enjoy this one!
The Beloved Dearly.......2005-08-27
The Beloved Dearly is about 4 kids that start funerals for pets. Pet owners give them money and their dead pet for a funeral. The best part about this book is that one of the kid's names is Swimming Pool and she is very emotional during the funerals. This story is very humorous and is great to read. It will make you laugh.
Book Description
A June wedding sets the scene for Anne Morrow Lindbergh’s bestselling novel,
Dearly Beloved. The ceremony is a great moment during which the “gathered together” survey not just this couple, this occasion, but their own lives, hopes, and fears. As the family and guests follow the familiar marriage service, they are stirred to new insights—on love, on marriage, and on all the stages of development involved. For the young and eager bridesmaid and best man, marriage still lies ahead; but for the mothers of the bride and groom, and for friends and relatives, the sight of the young couple and the words of the minister evoke more troubling thoughts and deeper questions. Anne Morrow Lindbergh wisely chose the framework of a wedding as a meditation on togetherness to contrast the questions she contemplated on solitude in her bestselling classic Gift from the Sea. The novel's structure also gave her scope for her reflections—some of them autobiographical—and intuitions about the most crucial of human relationships, reflections she calls “a theme and variations.” This classic book, first published in 1962 and long out of print, illuminates the truths behind marriage, not with easy optimism, but with perception, compassion, candor, and courage.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing book, wonderful author.......2004-08-02
My introduction to Anne Morrow Lindbergh was through "Gift from the Sea," a life-changing classic that I treasure and give as gifts to friends every year.
"Dearly Beloved" is a meditation on marriage as well as a novel told by various characters attending a wedding. It takes place in one day, as the bride and groom and their families gather in the bride's home for the ceremony and reception. It is not sugar-coated. Here is a realistic view of the pains and pleasures of this complicated sacrament we call marriage. I couldn't put the book down and read it start to finish in one night. I sensed Lindbergh's own conflicts about her difficult marriage to her famous husband, plus her feminist philosophies glimmer throughout the stories and are remarkably ahead of their time. (This novel was written in the 1960s.) It was moving, sad, wise, inspiring, uplifting, infuriating and more -- like marriage itself -- and should be read by anyone who's newly engaged or even thinking about getting married.
Book Description
Now, fans of the New York Times bestselling author can revisit her award-winning debut historical romance after several years of its being out of print. It is the breathtaking story of Diana Lindsay-the most desirable and sought-after woman in London-who wants only one man: a haunted lord with mysterious secrets as deep as hers...
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2005-01-06
This was my 2nd MJP book. After reading The Bargain, I was looking forward to Dearly Beloved but I basically had to force myself to finish this book. I found many of the several plot twists and subplots to be excessive, distasteful and exploitative. Really, is it necessary to incorporate rape, incest, sadism and prostitution (etc.) into one little story? I was very turned off by much of this. That said, I did think that the homosexual subplot was handled with sensitivity. Finally, I just couldn't bring myself to like the two main characters or find their actions and responses to be even remotely realistic. I will probably give MJP another try since I enjoyed The Bargain, but this time I will definitely get her books from the library, not the bookstore.
Intense and Engrossing:.......2004-09-20
This book starts off with an "incident" that occurs in chapter 1 that shapes the future lives of both main characters in enormous ways. The hero is "tortured" (psychologically) and the heroine is strong yet also "wounded." For those of us who like "dark characters" and intensity, plus the author's gift for writing, this is a near-perfect book. It is one of my personal favorites.
Courtesans, Spies, and "Fits"....Oh My!.......2004-07-24
I found this to be an enjoyable read - although the love scenes seemed to be a bit rushed. "Dearly Beloved" tells the story of Diane Lindsay, who leaves her small cottage home to pursue the courtesan profession in London. On her first appearance, she makes the acquaintance of Lord St. Aubyn, who eagerly wishes to lay claim to the stunning demirep. The two share a secret that bind them together yet ultimately may tear them apart.
The secondary characters were very likable. From Geoffrey, Diana's young son who suffers from epileptic "fits" - to Madeline, the reformed courtesan who cautions Diana that "a courtesan must never fall in love with her protector" - and Edith, the quiet Yorkshire woman who has been a part of Diana's life for years.
I would recommend this book to anyone who would care for a glimpse into the life of a courtesan and a truly endearing love story.
Love it or hate it. There is no middle ground........2004-07-17
Personally, I loved this book. This was the first one that I read by this author, now I just finished reading it again and loved it even more the second time.
I know several other reviewers disagree with me, and I have to admit that this book is not for everyone, but if you like a romance that deals with serious issues, without losing the magic, this is it.
Mary Jo Putney combines polemic issues like rape, homosexuality, child abuse and prostitution, an accurate historical background, an interesting plot with a few twists, and a very poignant and passionate love story. What more can you ask for?
All the characters are well developed and three dimensional, and even though I didn't always agree with the way they acted, I was able to understand the reasons, fears and inner conflicts that motivated them. Personally, I loved Gervase and Diana, as well as Diana's son Geofrey. They became real to me, and I cared deeply for them and their happiness.
I won't say anymore because I don't want to spoil the book for those who haven't read it, like some reviewers have done. I'll just say that in my opinion, this a very well written and enjoyable book, one that makes the Romance genre proud.
poignant, heart wrenching and I LOVE IT!!.......2004-01-05
Many issues were raised here and i truly empathise with the characters. Whilst Gervase unfortunately managed to be 'harmed' by his mother, Diana (whose father felt the same unnatural 'likings' towards her), luckily escaped such physical overtures. Imagine if her father had been truly deranged, he would have 'destroyed' her, and left her more wounded compared to what Gervase did to her in that inn.
Towards the end, i truly felt like strangling Gervase for spurning Diana's love. If not for Geoffrey's quick actions, Diana would have been dead...and Gervase would have thought the worst of her (thinking she'd a tiff with the Count-whom he jealously thought was Diana's lover)...but this is just my imagination..but i just hated him when he doubted Diana...
Anyway, i should've blamed his mother more..and thankfully, despite his torturous past (compared to the hero Michael Connery or 'Mikhail Kanauri' in Silks and Shadows - Gervase's past incident was still minor, correct me if i'm wrong), he turned out okay.

BOOK DESCRIPTION FROM THE BACK OF THE BOOK.......2006-02-05
For five long years the land of Homana had been strangling in the grasp of a usurper king- its people ravaged, by strife, poverty and despair; its magical race, the Cheysuli, forced to flee or face extermination at the hands of their evil counterparts, the sorcerous Ilhini. The time had come for Prince Carillon, Homana's rightful ruler, to return from exile with his Cheysuli shapechanger liege man, free his land from the evil domination of the tyrant Bellam and his villainous magicians, restore the Cheysuli to their rightful position of grace, and claim his birthright. To do this, he would not only have to raise an army, but overcome the fear and prejudice of an ignorant population and answer the call of a prophecy he never chose to serve! Book two of the dynastic fantasy epic of the magical Cheysuli race and the compelling prophecy which ruled them!
Much better than part 1.......2005-04-08
After reading "Shapechangers", I was pretty confident that I wasn't going to continue reading books in this series.. it was average at best, and did very little to compel me to continue. The second book; however, was much more entertaining, and steered clear of most of the silly melodrama that so marred the first installment.
The plot was definitely superior in part 2, and dealt with Carillon's war to reclaim his stolen throne. The actual "action" sequences in the novel are still not well developed.. i.e. you'll end a chapter before a battle, and the next chapter will begin immediately after the battle. This gets a little annoying, but the story moves at a fast pace and is entertaining enough to at least keep the pages moving.
Still not major earth shattering high quality fantasy, it's an fun enough read if you've already finished up with George R.R. Martin and Tolkein, and need something to while away a rainy afternoon. For simple enjoyment, it's not bad at all. Don't expect it to change your life... it won't.
Completely Disgusted.......2004-08-18
I have rarely been more offended and disgusted by a female author before. I can't believe the number of high ratings this book has received. I can't believe anyone liked this thing.
There are certain things heroic characters do not do. Things that make them, in fact, a villain. Things like telling a woman you're going to kill her father and then force her to marry you. This is something the most despicable of villains does. This is also something Carillon does. And despite my clinging to the hope that he'd have a moment of sanity and realize that his plans made hima disgusting, deplorable human being, he carried through with these plans.
I feel nothing but utter contempt for this character, and for the author who expects readers to like a book about a man who is nothing better than a rapist.
Clever follow up.......2001-11-20
As a sequel to Shapechangers (the first in the series), I think Jennifer Roberson did a fairly good job in keeping interest and the plot going. I like it that she wrote this book in the first person - it created some changes with the first book. However, i think the story was too much focused on Carillon. THe book was written from his POV, and although some scenes were very well done, I wanted to hear more of Alix's story. Shapechangers, which is definitely my favorite in the Cheysuli series, made me love Alix's character, and that she was almost a side character and of only minor importance (except at the end) in this book bothered me. But overall, I thought this was a good book - there are some unexpected plot twists and changes which make you keep reading, despite how much you like or dislike the book.
Really good book.......2001-04-21
The sequal to Shape Changers, The Song of Homana is a very good read. I don't want to give anything away, so I'll just say that it's really good, and not confusing. If you like this book you should also read Sword Dancer, which is also by Jennifer Roberts, but takes place in a differnt world.
