Book Description
At the request of a local journalist, genealogist Torie OShea sets out to research her Missouri hometowns two mayoral candidates: incumbent Bill Castlereagh and his challenger, Sheriff Colin Brooke, Tories stepfather. With the discovery of a body linked to the Chicago Mafia, Tories research into the mayors genealogy turns up more questions than answers. As the case unravels, the mayor flees town and Torie makes a shocking discovery that might lead to her own demise.

Another good one.......2006-07-02
Rett MacPherson does it again. Her Torie O'Shea continues to be an entertaining character. Genealogy is a big draw and I find tidbits in the story that help in searches. She keeps the pages turning and I hate waiting for the next entry in the series.
Where is the series headed?.......2006-06-05
I have been a fan of Torie's from the first book. However, after finishing this one, I'm left wondering if the author wouldn't be better off wrapping things up here for the O'Sheas, and introducing a new protaginist; I wouldn't mind at all if that were Collette, by the way. I found the antics here a bit over-the-top, but don't want to say much more for fear of spoiling things. Much is made of Rudy's perceived "henpecked" (to use the polite term) status among the townspeople, but I had trouble buying into that based upon what we've seen in the series so far.
One thing that wasn't addressed before, and is not in this book either: Colin lives in Wisteria and runs for New Kassel mayor!? Even *if* there were no actual residency requirement for that position, you'd think it'd be a huge issue nonetheless. I would really like to know whether other readers noticed this issue, and if so, did it bother you, too - or were you able to work around it to get through the story?
One of the better one's.......2006-06-01
I thought this book was pretty good, although there didn't seem to be a murder for quite sometime, more of a disappearance. I did like the interaction of the characters, even Torie's reaction to her husband and stepfather (will not spoil it by going into detail). Gave the character's more life. I am hoping Collette will settle in New Kasel, I love this character and liked the way she turned into somewhat of a side kick for Torie. I feel this is a series that should be started at the beginning and read in order. Several characters that are mentioned in this book could make it confusing to a first time readers. Don't worry though, you will enjoy reading all the books in this series. Highly recommended.
amusing fascinating mystery.......2006-04-22
In New Kassel, Missouri, reporter Sam Hill asks genealogist Torie O'Shea to investigate the background including family trees of the two candidates running for mayor in a close intense election. Though she hates the incumbent Bill Castlereagh and his opponent is her stepfather, Sheriff Colin Brooke, Torie agrees.
She soon finds some interesting oddities in Castlereagh's past that do not add up. Before she can dig deeper, the mayor and his wife vanish. At about the same time a Mafioso from Chicago takes a room at the Murdoch Inn while bikers fire shots at people taking a hayride. Refusing to allow the Mafia to force her off her investigation especially since she has found ties between the gang and the missing mayor and upset with her husband who seems to want her also off the case, Torie keeps probing the past and the present while her marriage appears heading towards incineration.
As always Torie drives the men including the newcomers (and some women) in New Kassel crazy with her escapades. The story line is interesting as the heroine's marital troubles take a back seat to her need to learn what is happening in her small town though Torie is more comfortable digging into the past then the present. She remains an amusing fascinating protagonist able to carry the fun tale, but most readers will have figured out the solution to the mystery early on.

Linda (A Scot In U.S.A).......2005-02-27
A fo;;ow up to Martin McGartlands "Fifty Dead Men Walking"
A must read , It tells of his story once he was relocated to mainland Britain . He finds out that he was sacrificed by MI5 and should have been dead , only his determination to live by jumping out a 4th storey window , head first, while still bound, is why he is here today to tell his story .
This book is an account of him searching for the truth. He is being harrased almost daily by the local police , stopped for so called motor violations , and the superintendant, knowing who he was .
The Police even giving his name out in open court, his new identity of "martin ashe" formely MARTIN MCGARTLAND this astounds me .. As the IRA would have no trouble now of TARGETING HIM! In search of the truth , he evn makes a trip back to Belfast .........
Martin MCGartland 's COURAGE astounds me ... He tries in vain to tell the authorities that he will always be a target as the IRA has a very long memory....READ THIS BOOK AND YOU WILL SEE HOW THEY HAVE REPAID HIM FOR ALL THE DANGEROUS WORK HE DID FOR THE SPECIAL BRANCH WHILE BEING AGENT CAROL...
as he feared the ira did catch up with him and shot him several times....and if it wasnt for the quick thinking of his neighbors , he would be dead today ......
I WONDER HOW MARTIN IS GETTING ON TODAY?
i just hope that he has been given the protection and finances that he deserves....
GOD BLESS.
This book is a big let down!.......2004-03-13
Martin McGartland's life story has all the ingredients to make a fascinating, spell-binding book - or several books as the case may be. Unfortunately, Dead Man Running is greatly disappointing.
The biggest problem is that it is poorly written and horribly edited. McGartland thanks several professionals for, seemingly, helping him write the book, but the book reads like the work of an amateur. For example, he repeats himself over and over and over. I lost count of how many times he crowed at the brutality and thuggery of the IRA, or the sense of betrayal he felt by the duplicitous acts of various arms of the British government. The book could easily be thirty pages shorter if some of his repetitive diatribes were removed. Additionally, he inserts curse words in his narrative where they do not belong. I have no objection to foul language in a book, but at points it seems he uses it only to emphasize a point that, from the sentence or paragraph, is otherwise clearly emphasized. As for the editing, it is atrocious. There are misspelled or misused words and errors in simple addition/subtraction. McGartland's repetitiveness could have been cured by the editor. When you pay $16.95 for a book you expect that book to be done professionally, at least I do.
Spy stories lend themselves to suspense and intrigue, and this story is quite riveting in spots. But
it gets bogged down just as it seems it's going to take off. The several chapters about how the Northumbria Police and the Crown Prosecution Service, allegedly at the direction of higher ranking British agencies, repeatedly tried to frame McGartland, and his solicitors counter-actions, are somewhat boring.
For all the good McGartland might have done as a Special Branch informer, he is not the most sympathetic figure. Despite, by his own count, at least 50 traffic stops by Northumbria Police, and an untold amount of other run-ins with the law, McGartland takes no responsibility for even a single incident. In his mind, he has always been a victim of someone else's agenda.
McGartland states and re-states, literally dozens of times, how he risked his life to save others. There's a sense of entitlement in his tone that gets quite nauseating. A true hero doesn't need to convince his readers that he is one; his actions should speak for themselves.
Maybe everything he claims in the book is completely true, but there is something in his telling that makes him somewhat incredible. I would not call him a liar, but I found some of his accounts hard to believe.
I understand that a broader view of the "Troubles" is beyond of the scope of this book. However, Dead Man Running gives a reader with little knowledge Irish history absolutely no understanding as to why the IRA and the RUC operate they way they do. I am no apologist for the IRA, but I was disappointed that McGartland never explains why the IRA is so brutal to those in their own communities. One reason is that the brutality of the RUC over the decades has created such distrust and hatred in the Republican/Catholic communities, that community policing has, in essence, been dumped in the laps of the IRA, and they have gladly seized that power.
Likewise, to read this book one might conclude that the only struggle in Northern Ireland is between the provincial law enforcement agencies and British military, on one side, and the IRA on the other. There is exactly one (1) reference to Protestant paramilitaries in the entire book and it is exactly that a reference to "Protestant paramilitaries." Clearly, if the IRA is the sole villain in Northern Ireland than his battle against that organization seems all the more heroic. But, the IRA's position, or that of the Republican community at large, is better understood if one knows that Protestant paramilitaries engage in bombings, sectarian murders, intimidation, drug trafficking, punishment beatings, and the like. The provincial law enforcement agencies also appear less justified in their actions toward the IRA with the knowledge of their collusion with Protestant paramilitaries. Because these matters are entirely left out of the book, the reader does not get a true picture of what happened throughout the whole of Ulster during the Troubles.
In all, the book has some bright spots but its downside is, sadly, bigger than its upside.
Disgusting..........2003-11-16
Any Irishman who betrays his own race by working for the sassenach deserves whatever fate has in store for him... Hopefully a painful death.

Very good, it will leave you with him on your mind.......2003-10-14
This book is the true story of Marty McGartland who successfully infiltrated the IRA and escaped with his life only to find out that his would-be murder was set up by MI5 and the IRA jointly.
This book is almost heartbreaking to hear of the treatment he has recieved since his ordeal, being harassed by the local police force, being pulled over 3 times a day and being brought to court on trumped up charges.
In this sequel to 50 Dead Men Walking he tries to discover who exactly was behind his betrayal.
****UPDATE ON MARTY*****
This is for those who have read the book and are wondering what else has been happening since the end of the book...
Since his assasination attempt, instead of the authorities finally giving him the protection he needs, they blame his assasination attempt on drug dealers! Ridiculous, this is just typical of the type of treatment he has recieved, after having served his country and a foreign one for 4 years risking his life, inevetably giving up all that he holds dear.
So, in conclusion, he still hasn't made much progress, unfortunately.
This is a man you will want to keep in your prayers, he has done nothing but good and deserves to be rewarded, not cast out as some sort of nuisance.
Don't listen to these other reviews.......2001-12-26
I can't believe what these other reviews are saying about this book. To my mind Martin McGartland is a man who was responsible for saving a lot of inoccent peoples lives. Anyone who undertakes infiltration of the IRA purely to gather intelligence for the British government deserves the Victoria cross. This guy sacrificed his life and family for what he saw was the greater good, at times he is naive in his actions, but he is forthright and honest enough to admit this. He was not 'apparently a supergrass' as a previous reviewer wrote, he was a British agent, a supergrass is an out and out IRA member who sings like a sparrow to save his own skin, whilst pointing the finger at all his associates, He/they are not someone who tries to save lives and prevent bombings, shootings etc. I don't see this book as a money making excercise either, it is a remarkable story and since being uncovered as a British agent and sent into a life of false names and various addresses the story has become more intriguing. The way the Northumbria police force treat him is shocking, trying to expose him at every turn and so on, for some strange reason. If you had an organisation like the IRA after you, I'm sure if you caught sight of a car tailing you, you would put the foot to the floor to get away. Ask Salman Rushdie for his opinion on this, or even Sean O'Callaghan (someone in a similar boat).
Also I would like to say that McGartlands hatred for Belfast has nothing to do with the people but everything to do with the IRA and sinn fein. His hatred was not borne out of a punishment beating his brother got either, that happened long after he had been rumbled (His brother was beaten for being a relation of a so called 'IRA Traitor'). The man's life is not about self-promotion, it's about self preservation. Pure and simple. His book is a fascinating insight into the IRA and the special branch, who have really scored an own goal for any future spies out there, You need only look at how they abandoned the author when he needed them most, think twice before you consider that career path. This is not a tiresome read from a tiresome man but an intriguing read ...God bless Martin McGartland and those like him who put the survival of others before their own safety. A great, honest and forthright read.

Q of A #7.......2006-01-13
If you enjoy a good adventure story that keeps you guessing then you should read this book. Also, if you like dogs or animal stories you will probably like this book as well. This fictional book was written by Bob Balaban. He is a very good writer who uses a lot of details. This book is a little different than other books because it brings out both sad and happy emotions. This author is very creative with his descriptions. The author takes the reader along with Thomas as he starts an adventure that includes his biggest wish --- to have his very own dog!
Beware of Dog takes place in a small town in Cedar Springs, Idaho. The setting takes place on a slippery road during a heavy rainstorm. Our main character is a boy named Thomas who wears glasses. He is very tall for his age (six feet tall). He is very smart in almost every subject. He has a best friend named Violet. Violet is also Thomas' neighbor. They both are in the fifth grade.
This story is about a dog and the children. It was going to rain that morning and like Thomas always says, "It is a perfect day for worms!" They find this lost shaggy dog while walking to school. They take the dog to the veterinarian to get it checked out because it was hurt. The veterinarian said that they could pick him up the next day. They cannot wait so they both get up early in order to pick up the dog first thing in the morning. When they pick him up they notice something odd. All of a sudden the dog is so strong he can break through a wall and carry half the wall with him. Thomas can also understand the dogs thoughts! The children believe that the veterinarian had something to with the dog's new abilities. The vet notices the extraordinary powers that the dog has. Can Thomas and Violet help the dog before it is too late? Will the veterinarian take over the dog....find out by reading the book?
After I finished reading the book I realized that it is most likely for students in about sixth grade. I still liked the book even though it was not as challenging as I wanted it to be. It is still a good book to read for younger students. What I learned from this story is if you notice something looks wrong then you should have an adult check it out. If I had to rate this book I would give it 2 stars out of 5 because it was too easy for me. If I was younger I would probably have given it 3 stars for the plot and storyline. This book is still an exciting book to read.
Beware of Dog.......2005-12-16
thomas is a boy who wanted a odg so bad that he asked his parents for a dog cause all of his friends had a dog but one day he finds a dog that he loves so much. He asked his parents if he could have it and they sad yes so Thomas names the dog McGrowl and he plays with it watches TV with it eats and even goes to bed with it at night that dog was like his own brother but one day Thomas was playing catch with Mcgrowl and thomas axidently throws the ball into the road and the dog gets run over by a truck thomas thought that it was over for the dog but Thomas mom took McGrowl to the vet to see if he could save the dog so the vet worked to save the dog all night and when Thomas went back to the vet McGrowl was alive it was ameracol that the dog lived said the vet when they got home Thomas played fresbe in the back yard and when throught it the dog flue up into the air and got the fresbe Thomas couldn't belive his eyes and he found out he had super dog he had super strenth and very good eye site there was a Dr. named Minderbinder who was tring to take over the world but Thomas's dog keeps on stopin gs\his evil plans.
McGrowl is kinda awesome!.......2005-11-16
I think you should read McGrowl because it is very exciting. It has lots of interesting things going on in the story. There is lots of action and fun in the story. In one part, McGrowl gets captured, and if you want to find out what happens next, read the book! I liked this book because I like adventures and dogs. It made me feel sad when he got captured, but happy in other parts of the book.
My son loves McGrowl books.......2004-03-09
This book isn't going to be a classic, but it is fun to read. I have a young son who loves language and we read this book when he was in Kindergarten. Now each time there is another McGrowl book available through a school book fair, he adds it to his collection. We don't have any pets, but he loves the silliness of a bionic dog. The plotlines are ridiculous, but it sparks his imagination and he gets tickled each time we read about Thomas, Violet and McGrowl. If your child likes to think outside the box, he or she will probably enjoy this book and dream up their own adventures about having such a dog.
Mcgrowl has lots of adventures.......2003-12-16
If you like dogs I would recommend the book, McGrowl, Beware of Dog to read. There are two main characters in this book, Violet Schnayerson and Thomas Wiggins. Violet and Thomas find a dog and they take it to the vet for the night. They come back to get the dog in the morning. Thomas, whos father is scared of dogs, takes the dog home to his house. BEWARE of what happens next! If you want to know what happens next read this book.
This book takes place in a small neighborhood during the morning. The two kids don't know what there in for.
I love this book because I love dogs and adventures!

Fun and light.......2005-03-11
Another book, another skateboard on the cover. And worse, this one doesn't even involve California! What was this, a time where all Californians were blonde, ponytailed, and rode skateboards?
This sequel to Make Way For Dragons! starts shortly after that book but is much more active and involves a pure fantasy world. There's a prophecy involved, and Jenny, the nine-year-old from the previous novel, and the implication is that none of the events from the previous novel were accidental. The main bulk of the story begins after Jenny has left college and goes to refine her magical abilities under sorceress Lady Mira (note that with this move, she has now been resident on no fewer than three worlds.) She's been living under the shadow of the prophecy for most of her life, and really wants to get on with it so she can find out if she'll have a life later.
Note that by this point, though she is still outwardly human, she's basically a dragon in almost every respect.
Since Lady Mira is a rather impulsive person, they do in fact "get on with it," leading to a cliffhanger ending to be resolved in the third book.
In tone, this seems different from the previous novel because we don't have Earth and familiar everyday life as a touchstone. This is closer to pure fantasy, and Gunnarson's slapstick humor is evident at several points. The writing is again accessible to younger readers but there are allusions to sex, so screen beforehand to see if it's appropriate.

From the supplier: The UK food industry is up in arms over what it calls an attempt by the country's health bureaucracy to impose a standardized 'healthy' diet for all Britons. Many food companies complain that health officials have gone overboard in their nutritional information campaign so that important facts about traditional fare such as red meat and chicken are being deliberately downplayed, while the benefits of pasta, rice and fruits are loudly publicized.

Practical Guide to Contractually Protect Against Patent Trolls.......2006-01-06
This article provides practical and tangible guidance on how to protect against so-called "patent trolls." The article describes, in reasonable and understandable detail, contractual provisions that shift the risk of infringement from customer to supplier. Additionally, the article describes the interplay of contractual provisions such as indemnification, limitation of liability, and insurance requirements--and how these provisions must be drafted to provide adequate protection.
