        Book Description

Young children learn best through two kinds of experiences: dramatic play and interaction with their peerslearning through action precedes learning through language or thought. In The Dramatic Difference, Victoria Brown and Sarah Pleydell introduce drama as a bridge between children's natural propensity for active learning and the demands of the preschool and kindergarten curriculum.

The Dramatic Difference is a comprehensive guide to using drama as a teaching toolfrom spontaneous work initiated by a child's curiosity to drama work that is planned and guided by the teacher with specific educational objectives in mind. The authors offer:

Dramatic play offers the perfect medium for young children to solve problems, express emotions, develop critical-thinking skills, engage in socialization, and develop a sense of self. The Dramatic Difference will help preschool and kindergarten teachers, drama specialists, and day care providers create an environment where the potential for learning through drama is as limitless as a child's imagination.

          Book Description

Contrary to the trend to do away with arts education as an unnecessary expense in schools trying to boost student test scores, this book promotes and explains the value of integrated arts instruction in furthering the accomplishment of curricular objectives and fostering student achievement. Accomplished library media specialist and arts instructor Kristin Fontichiaro discusses how drama, shadow puppetry, and podcasting can be used as tools to meet curriculum objectives in the K-8 media center. By concentrating on the process of creating a piece of drama or puppetry or a podcast, as opposed to the goal of performance, and by infusing the arts with curriculum objectives in story or research, these techniques can intensify a child's learning and provide context for classroom curriculum objectives. A discussion of the affective and academic benefits of this process-based work as well as sample lessons are included. Photographs and examples of student work illustrate the oechniques. Grades K-8.

I teach Drama at a Classical Christian school and whereas Shakespeare is encouraged, some of his work is well, um...shall we say, a bit "naughty".
I like this book because Mr.Wilson gives brief scenes that show range of character without making me blush in front of the Headmaster!

              Book Description

Is it possible to learn about a particular period of history and discover historical concepts by becoming real men and women of the past, reliving dramatic moments of their lives, and experiencing their problems and actions? Sharon Fennessey's students are living proof that it is. History in the Spotlight shows teachers how they can help their students do the same and, in the process, make their own social studies programs more exciting and meaningful.

History in the Spotlight brings new life to the study of social studies by integrating the tools of creative drama and theatre - tools like pantomime, movement, improvisation, scripted drama, oral interpretation, debating, public speaking, readers theatre, storytelling, and the many other ways we use our body or voice to creatively communicate ideas to others. Taking into account the curriculum standards for social studies, the national standards for arts education in theatre, and Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences, Fennessey provides readers with the strategies that have worked best in her classroom such as:

Readers will discover for themselves that when they use creative drama and theatre practices, excitement replaces boredom in the social studies classroom and students participate enthusiastically in their lessons.

As a home school parent, I am always looking for resources to improve my childs education. I found this book to have many great ideas for a wide age range of children. They were well organized and listed the ages for which the activities were geared to. I am looking forward to using this book for years to come!

Though not an educator by profession, I have had extensive experience working with youth groups and have seen Polly Erion's teachings put to practical use. Results have been everything she claims and more. Obviously, her lessons were derived from many years of teaching experience.

5 out of 5 stars This book has been used by all our sixth grades........1998-12-26

"Drama in the Classroom" has been an invaluable source of ideas for sparking the curriculum. My students and I have used lessons from this book to plan special programs. Throughout the year, in Social Studies and English, I have turned to it to guide students as they shape skits and oral presentations. The structure the lessons provide helps keep students focused as they plan and work but does not stifle their creativity. Celima Smith, 6th grade teacher, Mill Valley Middle School, Cal.

Polly Erion presents a drama program that is rich, varied, and in synch with the children. Drama in the Classroom is invaluable for suitable, stimulating ideas. Helen Morris, Kindergarten Teacher Tam Valley School, California

Polly's activities are easy to use. They teach the 'higher lessons' so desperately needed in our society and world today; cooperation, being considerate, using self-discipline and they are fun! Janice Moore, Third Grade Teacher
