Book Description
Have you ever wanted to be a full-time artist and make a living at it? Have you ever wanted to know how to get started selling your art? Then this book is for you! "Breaking into the Art World" is filled with practical information on "how to get started making a living as an artist." The author, Marshall White, lives in Kona, Hawaii and works as a full-time artist. His paintings and prints of Hawaii are wonderfully detailed and popular with local art buyers and tourists who visit the island. At this writing, his works of art are displayed in various galleries in Hawaii and in Thailand and are collected by people from all over the world. This book is the first of his writings to be published and was written to help other artists who often ask him, "Do you make a living with your art how did you make the jump to being a full-time artist?" It has been written for people who, like himself when he began, have no clue what to do to get started marketing and selling their art.

No-nonsense advice: making a living from your art.......2007-06-27
Many artists only dream of making a living from our fine art. Brian Marshall White is doing it and telling us how in this book. His approach may not agree with everyone -- especially those who graduated from art school and are waiting for galleries to accept them. In this book he shows that if you want to create art full-time, and don't mind creating *some* that suits your local market more than your own aesthetic, you can make a living. He doesn't deal with how to submit to galleries and such, but how to get your art into buyer's hands directly. I am inspired.
end the gallery wait.......2007-02-27
Alot of other artist how-to books give you cover to cover advice on how to write up an artist's statement and compile a portfolio for gallery submission, suggesting such things as go make a name for yourself in another country before trying to get into US galleries... win a grant... win a contest...- BEFORE submitting your portfolio.
This book is the most effective artist's guide out there for learning how to EARN AN INCOME, gallery or no gallery. Obviously all artists want gallery representation cuz that means they get to paint and forget about the pressure of promoting themselves... but anyone who has tried to get into a gallery without having been in one before will discover the catch22 that no gallery wants someone who is unknown...
What I love about Brian's approach is that in bypassing the gallery, as he himself experienced, he got galleries to come to him!
TOO COOL!
He gets into guide-for-dummies detail, offers all the phone numbers of his personal suppliers (very helpful especially since I live his town!)
and stimulates one to think off the page, meaning I got so many more ideas from his suggestions that aren't even in the book... it's just that kind of book- it gets you motivated and thinking creatively AND realistically (something we artists can have trouble with).
I wanna go thru the phone book and take this guy out to lunch- he's my new hero!
Fabulous Book!.......2006-12-06
If you are thinking about taking the plunge into the art world, read this book first. Marshall White promotes a specific approach. How to sell your own artwork, and make the most money while doing it. Sure you can put your art in a gallery and hope it sells, (how many of us have done that???) Marshall shows the reader how to make sales happen.
This book is concise, easy to read, and a step by step guide on how to do just this. If you are even wondering if you want to sell your art, you need to read this book. It is full of great references, from which printer to buy, to where to get matting supplies for prints.
The most important part for me, is the attitude with which he goes about his art sales. Always have a smile on your face, look your customers in the eye, and what one thing can you do today to further your business or art? Attitude is everthing, it can make or break a business. Marshall White gets it.
Do yourself a favor...make a small investment and buy this book! .......2006-03-16
As an artist who wants to be a SELLING artist, I read White's book. Simply put, I found that it was an excellent source of ideas on how to not only begin the process of selling your work, but also the pragmatic aspects as well.
As an artist, I paint not to express any soulful meaning, but to make paintings that answer the question: Would I want it hanging on a wall in my house?
So after a few years of painting, my confidence has grown and I believe my art is sellable. but how do you get started selling it?
White's book is a densely packed little tome of ideas that stem from his experiences in starting off his career as an artist earning a living at it. The book has gems of ideas on how to get started selling, and how to handle the pragmatic issues of displaying, printing, advertising, packaging your works.
For example: I loved chapter 5 because it included a simple apporach to be a Street Artist that many of us artists can surely do. He tells you how to identify a good location to paint to draw attention of passer's by and how it can help you increase the market's awareness of you and your art. (he also mentions how this approach can benefit local businesses because you become the ADVERTISEMENT that helps pull people into the stores/restaraunts that you are standing in front of...a nice win/win situation).
White also instructs you on how to to limited edition prints, pricing, care and packaging, etc.
If you are an artist who desires to 'come out of the closet' but doesn't know how, make the little investment here (it costs less than a couple of lattes!). Mr. White really does want to help those artists like me who have the desires to earn a sustainable living by creating and selling our works. He wants to share his knowledge with you so that you can experience the joy of earning a living as an artist.
This little book is the real deal!.......2005-12-07
I am so pleased to have this book. Marshall White has done a terrific job of presenting a little book filled with oodles of pearls on how to jump-start your art career. He clearly is living what he writes and how fortunate we are that he is willing to share his knowledge and experience with us. This book is very readable, is easy to follow and packed full of so much detail. I see many uses for this resource on my shelf, beyond art (although I have always wanted to have a go at it)...I am going utilize this book to market my little antique/curiosity business that we plan on opening soon. The book is full of wonderful tips and very sensible information. I just cannot say enough...it's great! Mahalo, Marshall.....and please keep painting those Kona sunsets.
Book Description
Where To Seek Job Opportunities and Funding Sources For Your Work,
If you're an artist, you intuit it. Art is there within you. This book is for those who on some level know what they truly are -- either you are trying to learn how to do this artistic life better, or you are trying to decide whether or not to do it at all. How can you take this vague idea of being an artist and make it a reality? Get clear and make a plan.
How will this book help? By pointing you in some directions, showing you where to get information you may need. By giving you the experience of others who have gone before you who may have done something you can benefit from, and who have been gracious enough to pass it on. By helping you to see what kind of a plan you need. By helping you make a plan. Bottom line, as an artist you have an even greater need to make long-term plans than other folks. Income will likely come at irregular intervals. You'll have to save money whenever you can, get good credit, maintain a fuel-efficient vehicle, and find the way to do your art. Yet we all must budget for rent, food, telephone, transportation, clothing, health insurance, gas and electric - the stuff of day-to-day living.
Inside this book are practical suggestions and ideas to help you cope with artist's life including: Housing, Telephone, Home Office, Car, Health Insurance, Finances, The Internet, Legal Assistance, Grants, MFA Programs, Theatre Companies and Artist Retreats, Working Overseas, Putting Together Your Artist Portfolio.
Art That Pays will give you ideas and practical, concrete suggestions. If you are an artist and you have decided to pursue it, this thing you are embarked upon is noble. We hope to give you some encouragement because you can never have too much support. And we hope, perhaps, to make you smile at least once or twice, if not in amusement, at least in recognition of the absurdity, joy and wonder that is this life we have.

Customer Reviews:
a feast for the eyes.......2000-03-15
Truly thorough text and photographic record of the work of the acknowledged source of the most beautiful fashion embroidery in history. Lesage has long been known for its opulent designs but some of us spring chickens have a surprise in store, and when you open this book your jaw will truly drop. Sample pieces, appliques, closeups of detail work, fringed trims, whole garments, movie stills, accessories, and designer sketches, and all of it pure inspiration for we creative types who make fashion. For sheer invention and brilliancy of design, flip through the photos and allow them to breathe color and texture into your work. If you're a fashion junkie or student, settle into a comfy chair and read the text for an in-depth look at the history of the premier embroidery firm in the world. Despite the industrial revolution and now the information age, it's all still done by hand with simple tools, and some of the examples have numbers representing the hours of work required, which will shock the faint of heart. But if you're contemplating using feathers, beads, sequins, silk ribbon, cording, floss, bullion, fine metallic threads, jewels or rhinestomes in a new and inventive way and just need a jump-start, it's in this book. The price is well worth the images (as many as 6 on a page) and it would make a nifty coffee table book as well. The perfect use, in my eyes, would be as a gift to a young girl showing a strong interest in fashion. Let her learn from the very best. For the rest of us, it will be a flight into the same world Clara discovered in the Nutcracker: pure fantasy come true. Here we can shed ratty blue jeans as well as the stifling little navy suit, and imagine ourselves covered in dazzling ornamentation. It's enough to make one want to plan a fancy dress ball for an excuse to get dressed up!
The most beautiful book I have ever seen........1999-04-06
This is the most beautiful book I own and have ever seen, and I have many of the best in the fields of fashion and textile arts. This book covers them both. If you love couture and embroidery this is the book for you. The text is interesting and the photos are first rate. A wonderful insite into the most famous embroidery house in the world! Take note, this is not a how-to book. It is about the most creative facet of couture history - embellishment. A must have for any fashion and/or embroidery enthusiast.

Book Description
Between the years 2000-2004 when Skullz Press was active, Mike Giant used his publications as an avenue through which to distribute art works done with his favorite art tool: the marker. This collection from Upper Playground and Fifty 24SF Gallery brings together for the first time the first four zines of Giant's solo work for Skullz Press, Pagina Vilot, Shim Rot, Flood Bart and Dairy Hicks, and also debuts a new work entitled Passive Moles. The book is filled with Giant's graffiti-, typography-and tattoo-inspired collage imagery & bizarre scenes with crazy demented skulls, goofy drooling guys, religious iconography, tags and much more. It is interesting to see Giant's style develop through the pages, from the "freestyle" pieces of the early zines to the refined and more labor intensive works of the later works in which the primary piecing style he uses today was debuted. Cool and beautiful, this is a must have for any fan of Giant.
Customer Reviews:
Mike Giant is a God.......2007-07-29
This compliation of Mike's drawings is a must for anyone who has the ability to see. Keep in mind that these are all Sharpie Drawings that were done on the fly, so they will not compare with his finished works, BUT what better way to pick the brain of a master artist, than to look at hundreds of his freestyle drawings. The book, which is small in size, is HUGE on content. More pages than you'll know what to do with, which is good, since you'll probably be beating off to some of these drawings and stick some of the pages together.

Book Description
In today's hypervisualized culture, has every message or social agenda been usurped by styling, commerce, and fashion? What position does art occupy in conveying the meanings of everyday design? What position should it occupy? And how do we make meaning--that which is invisible--visible? In Open 8, guest editors Willem van Weelden and Jan van Grunsven introduce this debate. Further examination comes courtesy critic Brian Holmes, who explores (in)visibility as a tactic in art, and Dieter Lesage, who critically examines the proposals by design firm OMA for a new iconography of Europe. Among these and other thought-provoking essays is an account of a round-table discussion centered around legitimating "Art and the Public Space," courses in designers' academic training, photographic essays, and book reviews.
