Kellerman isn't just an Edgar Award-winning thriller writer, he's a prominent child psychologist, and it shows in Billy Straight. The hero is a 12-year-old runaway whose sharp mind and straitlaced moral sense make him fit to survive the lurid jungles of Hollywood. One night hiding in Griffith Park, Billy witnesses the butchering of Lisa Ramsey, the cokehead ex-wife of Cart Ramsey, a crummy actor-golfer once busted for pummeling Lisa. Did Cart knife Lisa, or was it his pathetic old football sidekick Greg Balch?

When O.J. was on trial, Kellerman said, "This wouldn't make a good novel," but some of Kellerman's toughest critics say this funhouse-mirror version of an O.J.-like case is his best, better than his famous Alex Delaware series. Psychologist Dr. Delaware has a bit part here, but the heroine is Detective Petra Connor, his distaff equivalent. Kellerman's main strength is his vivid invention of secondary characters and his skill at juggling subplots. When Petra's media-whore boss puts Billy's police sketch in the paper with a $25,000 reward, two marvelously sub-simian bounty hunters join the chase: a vicious Russian ex-cop and the vile biker boyfriend of Billy's stoned-out, trailer-park mom.

Like the kid hero of Russell Banks's Rule of the Bone, Billy enriches his author's customary milieu by viewing it from a new, low angle. The tale is more taut than Kellerman's 1997 bestseller Survival of the Fittest and more riveting than the O.J. case--the cops are smart and justice has a prayer. --Tim Appelo

Book Description

In this riveting, astute, high-tension thriller, the creator of psychologist sleuth Alex Delaware weaves a Dickensian tale of innocence, urban depravity, and the resilience of the human spirit, and brings to the page one of the most endearing and finely drawn characters in contemporary  fiction.

Twelve-year-old Billy Straight--precocious, heartbreakingly perceptive, relentlessly moral--has fled the chaos and abuse of his life at home and is fighting to survive on L.A.'s meanest streets. All alone, Billy has fashioned a precarious existence for himself, using principled tricks to nourish his body and his mind. Late one night he watches from his hiding place as a man viciously butchers a woman. The victim turns out to be the ex-wife of a television celebrity with a history of domestic violence, and Billy becomes the center of terrifying attention--from the media, from violent bounty hunters, and from the murderer himself. As he runs for his life, relying on his native wit and instincts for survival, Billy is also tracked by a potential savior: Petra Connor, a tough, gifted, beautiful LAPD homicide detective with a past of her own.

Breathtakingly paced, Billy Straight  brings to life one street kid's efforts to survive in the face of unspeakable evil. Richly layered, emotionally compelling, and peopled by a vivid cast of supporting characters--including Alex Delaware himself in a strong cameo role--this gripping novel represents one of the century's great story-tellers at the top of his form.

A resourceful runaway alone in the wilds of Los Angeles, twelve-year-old Billy Straight suddenly witnesses a brutal stabbing in Griffith Park. Fleeing into the night, Billy cannot shake the horrific memory of the savage violence, nor the pursuit of a cold-blooded killer. For wherever Billy turns -- from Hollywood Boulevard to the boardwalks of Venice -- he is haunted by the chuck chuck sound of a knife sinking into flesh.

As LAPD homicide detective Petra Connor desperately searches for the murderer, as the media swarms mercilessly around the story, the vicious madman stalks closer to his prey. Only Petra can save Billy. But it will take all her cunning to uncover a child lost in a fierce urban labyrinth -- where a killer seems right at home....

2 out of 5 stars Not as Good as the Delaware Books.......2007-09-28

BILLY STRAIGHT is a standalone book by Jonathan Kellerman that does not feature his usual hero, Alex Delaware. Although I consider myself a big Kellerman fan, I was pretty disappointed with this effort.

As another reviewer pointed out, BILLY STRAIGHT has an oddly disjointed quality. This novel contains a very large cast of characters, and Kellerman keeps switching the point of view with every chapter. As a result, none of the characters end up being that well developed. Indeed, much of the cast consists of stereotypes and cardboard cut-outs -- the Russian gangster, the adorable kid, the redneck trailer trash, and so on. I also didn't find Petra Conner, the detective heroine, to be that interesting a character either.

This book also has a rather stale, predictable murder plotline, and I was able to predict the killer's identity pretty easily (there is a rather obvious red herring in this book). In the end, I just didn't find this novel to be particularly original or compelling.

Jonathan Kellerman is a good writer, but BILLY STRAIGHT is a stylistic experiment that didn't really work for me. If you've never read Kellerman before, my advice is to read his early Alex Delaware novels like WHEN THE BOUGH BREAKS, OVER THE EDGE, and SILENT PARTNER. They are far superior to this subpar effort.

5 out of 5 stars Funhouse of Horror for boy.......2007-05-31

I'm intoxicated with Alex Delaware, but this novel with new heroine Petra Connor left me dying for more! Billy Straight, 12, is another character I'd like to see Kellerman follow in more novels. This boy made me at times shake my head at how sad it is for a 12-year-old to be so worldly, and at other times want to wrap my arms around him for the naivite he also displayed. The boy seemed to vacillate between a young boy and a 30-year-old. His genius in hiding out only made Kellerman's genius at characters more prevalent.

The morbid description of violence gave the story more color. The reader believes she knows who the killer is to the very end -- and then is surprised by the real culprit! What a ride!

Kellerman is just a master of characterization. Calling his books "psychological thrillers" is like calling a flying saucer a quarter. Kellerman's expertise goes beyond the average psychological thriller.

4 out of 5 stars Up and down.......2007-04-16

When I ran out of light reading, I found BILLY STRAIGHT. BILLY STRAIGHT became my first Jonathan Kellerman novel. I can make several points that would be helpful for those who are seeking a good story.

In some respects, BILLY STRAIGHT is a "Stairway to Heaven" novel. It starts off slow, almost painfully slow, gradually builds up and explodes with action at the end. Over the years, I have learned that some great novels are start painfully slow - a characteristic which can drive me to stop reading. Many times such slow moving storylines evolve into my favorite stories. Thus, I have disciplined myself to read seemingly boring novels in hopes that the progression will change. Such a shift in tempo generally happens with delightful results.

I like a storyline that seduces me to forget my environment. I can get so involved in reading; I forget who I am and what I should be doing. Occasionally, it is nice to forget what I am supposed to be doing. At times, BILLY STRAIGHT offers that level of forgetfulness. Other times, it doesn't.

I like a novel that creates pictures in my mind. Sometimes authors have such a mastery of the written word, they create pictures in my mind which makes the reading experience like watching a movie. Yet, good books are always better than good movies. Good books have more to see! At times, BILLY STRAIGHT offers that picture-creating quality. Other times, it doesn't. It is one of the most uneven novels I have read.

There are numerous better novels. However, BILLY STRAIGHT outnumbers the inferior novels. In the end, BILLY STRAIGHT ain't bad and I don't regret reading it.

4 out of 5 stars A change of pace.......2006-06-03

I love Kellerman's Alex Delaware series, but this one is not a part of that series. This one features Detective Petra Connor, who is a homicide detective in LA and has worked with Alex and his friend Detective Milo Sturgis in the past. (Alex does make a brief appearance, though).

Petra is an interesting character - she's an artist as well as a detective - and several other detectives are nicely fleshed out as well. It's a cool story about the brutal murder of a TV Star's ex-wife. Twelve year old runaway Billy Straight is the only eye witness to the murder and we follow his fearful flight through the city as well as the police investigation and how wealth and fame obstructs the investigation. It's a twisty plot and, while I had figured out who the killer was by the end (the very end), I wasn't SURE, so it's a bit of a surprise.

The narrative style kind of threw me with this one. The Alex Delaware novels are told in the first person with Alex telling the story - my favorite kind of narrative. This one jumps around from first person POV as Billy to third person limited from different character's POV. It was not particularly difficult to follow, as each chapter has a consistent point of view, but it was a little disconcerting for me and that's the only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. Oh, that and a cutsie bit at the end I thought the story could easily have done without.

Overall, it's a tense story as poor Billy is pursued by perverts, the killer, the police and anyone out for the reward.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I expected! Sorry JK.......2006-01-27

It started out interesting but got boring. I found myself wanting to skip chapters just to get back to Billy. He goes through hell and I couldn't wait for it to finish. I've read most of Jonathan Kellerman's book which have always kept me on edge but this one was disappointing. Besides the ending left me wondering. SORRY!

Roller is without a doubt one of the most gifted, imaginative, original artists I have ever encountered in my Art Journeys. Circa 1987 I saw one of his paintings, and I have been a devotee ever since. Most persons will remember him, (and remember him they will if they have ever seen one of his paintings) as the guy who paints monkeys, cats and dogs wearing clothing, and for the flying pickles, cucumbers, cigarettes and other airborne objects. But there is much more than that, much more. --- If you buy this book, you will be able to enter Roller's world at Brenda's Nut Farm, Mrs. Jenkins' house, and all the other "places". And what a world it is. Use the adjectives of your choice. I will not indulge in that here. It has to do with an Asparagus experience a young Roller had when his grandfather showed him that Asparagus...Well you figure it out. It's a strange trip indeed, but one that is worthwhile --- On the surface, at a first glance, his paintings may seems crazy and off the wall, but have a look at the technique, the painstaking attention to detail, the original ideas and, well you'll being to realize more and more that here is an artist who is...Roller --- This book is a perfect showcase. Lavishly illustrated with many beautiful color plates, well printed and well bound. It's the best Roller book there is. The text is for the most part by Roller, because only he can really explain it all. If you are lucky enough to own this book, you are fortunate indeed. It is one of my favorite art books. --- Excuse the sort of disjointed review, but this book is really beyond review, because the art is as well. If you buy, it you'll see what I mean. If you don't, stick to something safe instead.

STOP AT NOTHING TO FIND THIS ! You'll thank me later! Roller has an unequivocable, God-given(?) talent...those of you who know, really know. With that in mind, and for those of you who have SUPERB taste in literary entertainment and who are grateful to share the same unique appreciation for AMAZING imagination, I recommend this book. (I also personally recommend DRW's ANYTHING you can get your hands on-but this book is special...YOU'LL SEE, I got mine a few years ago in Santa Monica...keep looking, there's one out there for you too).

DRW has the most distinctive and unique style of any artist of our time...I will never forget the first time I saw his work. I have purchased his art prints and previous books. I would have this one also if I could find it!

I have two children, and although it is wonderful to read to your children, it can get boring. I love this book and so do my children, as long as I replace "the little girl" with their names. This is a beautifuly written and illistrated book that is soft and magical. I wish I could remember who gave it to my daughter two years ago because it is our favorite. I never use different voices for characters when I am reading but the cadence of this book is wonderful and I can't help but give the wind a voice. I recomend this book for any child's library and is a great book to give a close friend's or family's child.

5 out of 5 stars Best Read Out Loud for Small Children.......2006-02-09

I have read this book hundreds of times and I think that I enjoy it more, each time. This story was written by a storyteller and it shows! Of all the many fabulous books that I have read to my young daughters, this one is a standout. This book is for anyone that loves books that sound beautiful, read outloud.

                    5 out of 5 stars A SOOTHING BEDTIME TALE.......2004-04-04

Granted, there are a plethora of bedtime stories available, but when someone asks for recommendations "Wind Says Good Night" is usually on my list.

Youngsters find much to enjoy as a chorus of frogs, moths, mockingbirds and crickets all whisper goodnight. The text has a comforting lilt, and the pastel drawings are both restful and amusing.

                    5 out of 5 stars A beautifully entertaining story.......2003-10-15

A little girl can't go to sleep, so the wind asks what he could do to help. And that is the flow of the story ~~ as nighttime winds down to the soft sigh of the wind.

There is a magical quality to this book ~~ one that keeps me reading in delight. (If I have to read these books to my kids, it better be enjoyable for me too!) The pictures are beautifully illustrated. I am now a David Jorgensen fan. And I really enjoy Katy Rydell's writing in this book. It's very musical and lyrical ~~ whimiscal too. It's a delightful book for my children to hear before they go to bed. And the pictures are a joy to behold.

This is one purchase we won't regret buying!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite, and my daughter's favorite, for over two years!.......1999-09-11

This is a wonderful book for bedtime. One of my favorite aspects is that the text can very easily be paraphrased if needed- the reader can skip over the repeated lines and go right to the answer: "I can't stop shining unless there's a change in the weather." Then when your child is a little older, you can read the entire book as written. "The child", by the way, is never referred to as a girl or a boy, which is nice, so that boys and girls will be able to identify. I'm not sure I agree with the reviewer who said that this child is "restless"- the child simply can't sleep because a bird is singing outside the window, and so the story begins. This beautiful book makes a great gift!

                      Book Description

Nikki Giovanni, long known as "the Princess of Black Poetry," dedicates Those Who Ride the Night Winds to "the day trippers and midnight cowboys," the ones who have devoted their lives to pushing the limits of the human condition and who have shattered the constraints of the status quo to live life as a "marvelous, transitory adventure."Included are poems about John Lennon, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Robert Kennedy, as well as friends, lovers, mothers, and the poet herself. With reverence for the ordinary and in search of the extraordinary, Those Who Ride the Night Winds is Nikki Giovanni's most accessible collection ever. She displays her passion for and connectedness to the people and places that touch her. The reissue of Nikki Giovanni's seminal 1984 collection will once again enchant those who have always loved her poems--and those who are just getting to know her work.

As a witness to three generations, Nikki Giovanni has perceptively and poetically recorded her observations of both the outside world and the gentle yet enigmatic territory of the self. When her poems first emerged from the civil rights and Black Power movements in the late 1960s, she immediately became a celebrated and controversial figure. Written in one of the most commanding voices to grace America's political and poetic landscape at the end of the twentieth century, Nikki Giovanni's poems embody the fearless passion and spirited wit for which she is beloved and revered.

Nikki Giovanni is our most widely read living black poet, and in her most accessible collection to date, we become aware of the poet as a human being we can relate to, someone affected by and concerned with events. The title of this collection refers to people who have tried to make changes, people who have gone against the tide, people who were unafraid to test their wings. Included are poems about John Lennon, Billie Jean King, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Robert Kennedy. There are poems about friends, lovers, mothers, and about the poet herself.

Long known as the "Princess of Black Poetry," Nikki Giovanni is as alive and vibrant as ever. Her many readers will find once again in this collection the warmth, wit, passion, and caring about people that have always distinguished her work. Strong, direct, tremendously energetic, visionary, vulnerable, and real, these poems reveal a great spirit among us; a woman in her human dimension; a person all readers can identify with and believe in.

Many of her poems express how I feel to my beloved. They hold the true powers of words of wisdom that can be passed on to others.

He is called Night Wind with Cougar medicine. The illegitimate son of the vet, Tom McKinley. He runs a rescue compound for big cats.

Tom was friend and confidant to Kelly Baxter's grandpa. She has now inherited her grandpa's cabin. Her mother asked her to stop at the McKinley ranch before going on to the cabin.

Then the storms came. So did the baby. Good thing Shane took his dad with him to the cabin. Little by little Kelly told Shane about Jason, the father of her baby.

I loved the story of Puma and his dream of the one eyed cougar. And [I hope, historical] parts about Quantah Parker, the half-Comanche War Chief.

When she decided to climb into bed with Shane, frankly I started to lose interest. Premarital sex is just too common and really does not add up to love. Kelly already has had one bout of it, what does she think another round will cure?

Little Brianna is sure a sweet thing and does add demention to the story and Jason is a great scumbag. Did like Tom and Kelly's mother falling in love. Grace Night Wind is another chuckle, if not far fetched.

The characters are really good, the theme of the story is great but the sex is marshmellow, gooey, pretentious. Too much.

will recommend --M - no matter what I think or disagree with - you will probably enjoy this story.

                          5 out of 5 stars :).......2001-02-08

Shane Night Wind lives on a rescue. This is a ranch for wild cats. He came to the rance to live with his father five years ago when his wife left him and took their son with her saying he belonged to another man. Shane was devestated.

Kelly Baxter shows up to stay at the cabin that her late granfather lived in near Shane's ranch. Kelly is pregnant with a child that her boyfriend does not want. Kelly is at the cabin to think and relax.

Kelly and Shane become fast friends. I really liked the fact that there pasts were not dragged out of them piece by piece throughout the book. Instead, the were up front with each other right away, so they dealt with their feelings and problems together. Shane is afraid of getting close to this woman and child and than having them leave him. He is constantly thinking about the birth father, who is sure will want to be apart of his daughters life.

This book is all about family and love. I really enjoyed reading about Shane and Kelly and their families. This is a straight-forward book about love and what it means to be honest and to trust another human being.

If you don't even open the cover, buy this book for theincredibly wonderful/wicked dustjacket depicting a sadistic Punch (ofthe "Punch & Judy" puppet show fame). The jacket is thebest "blurb" for the contents - unexpected. This is Cowles' complete (apparently, this is EVERYTHING) works. This is wonderful in and unto itself since the author's abilities (and Cowles abilities vary from the sublime to the mediocre) can be seen over his entire writing career. These are not your typical modern, overtly sexual (ie-Clegg, Lee, Ketchum) horror stories. By modern tastes, these are not even horrific. Most of stories read with a limit of peversity that reside well in the E.F. Benson or H.P. Lovecraft school of shock/gore. These are wonderfully scary stories (not so much horrifying) without the charged libido. Robert W Chambers and H.R. Wakefield wrote "thinking person's" ghost stories - Cowles' works are exactly in the same genre. It's too bad that college courses do not offer more classes on the evolution and place of horrific literature - if they did, this book would be a definite recommendation to a good reading list. If you want to simply unplug your brain and "vedge" on gore - don't buy this book. ...if you like a more well-rounded view of what horror was in "Lovecraftian" era. You will get ...entertainment out of the small-spaced, tightly packed pages. Then again, I thought the freaky dustjacket was worth the expense !
