Book Description

In a unique collaboration, The Breast Cancer Fund, the American Cancer Society, and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation invited artists and writers across the nation who had faced breast cancer to submit their work. The result is Art.Rage.Us., a riveting book of art, fiction, poetry, and prose, and a bold testimony to the courage of women who face the disease. At turns stirring, humorous, heartrending, introspective, stark, and defiant, the pieces in Art.Rage.Us. have the power to comfort, provoke, and transform. For each of the 75 artists, the impulse to transform her experience of breast cancer through creative expression was an integral part of the search for healing. Together their work forms a inspiring statement about the healing power of art.

5 out of 5 stars I love this book! Incredible art, amazing women!.......1999-01-27

I love this book. An awesome testimony to the power of the women who have contributed. The art is beautifully poignant, moving, meaningful. I have never had breast cancer, but know and love many women who have (I am an oncologist) and I think this book is an amazing example of the incredible strength, courage, humor and insight of the women who had the guts and grace to not only create the visual and written images but to publish them for all to see. I have shown this book to everyone I can find--the medical students, doctors, nurses and social workers with whom I work at the Massey Cancer Center at VCU in Richmond--I have promised one of my patients to show it to her the next time she is in the clinic. It is so inspiring. Don't even ask me which pieces are my favorites! I love this book!

I am honored to be one of the artists in this powerful and moving book. At my art exhibits I include Art.Rage.Us and note that the book is in constant use during the shows. So many people are affected by the ravages of cancer. Both this book and the art exhibit are healing for victims, families and friends. The Art.Rage.Us. exhibit will tour the U.S.A. until December 2000. See it. You will be moved. Buy this book for your permanent library. Your heart will be touched. I cannot read this book without tears. The women are powerful role models. I admire and respect you!

    Book Description

No longer found only on the backs of ol' cow hands from the Rio Grande, or in closets that have been undisturbed for the last sixty years, cowboy shirts are now highly collectible-treasured pieces of Western Americana. But what distinguishes one from the other? < BR> Cowboy Shirts is the resource on understanding the history behind these uniquely American pieces of art, and on what to look for in collecting them, because while fashion trends may come and go, quality design and construction are always recognizable. The book contains a complete list of cowboy shirt labels (over 250 of them!) to help you identify the manufacturer and date of your finds. < BR> Rowdy, rhinestoned, saucy, sturdy, colorful, or plain-Cowboy Shirts will make you want to kick up your spurs in Western delight as you follow them from practical wear, to costume, to fashion, to art. < BR> G. Daniel DeWeese was raised in South Dakota where his parents owned and operated a ranch near the Black Hills. Dan studied creative writing at the University of South Dakota before going to West Africa with the Peace Corps as an irrigation specialist for agricultural development programs. He helped launch and manage an agricultural-development company in Saudi Arabia. Dan has worn Western shirts, hats and boots all his life, around the world. He lives with his wife, Julie, and their overgrown Airedale in Minnesota. < BR> Steve Weil has Western wear in his genes: he is the third generation to run his family's firm, Rockmount Ranch Wear Mfg. Co. Steve's first foray in the rag trade was in 1958 as an infant model in a Western industry fashion show. His love for vintage Western wear began in high school when he raided his grandfather's closet for shirts from the 40's. Today he heads the company and is responsible for all design of the brand's many lines. Steve lives in Denver with his wife Wendy and son Colter. < BR>

Western shirts have been around enough decades to become collectible: but what distinguishes brands, makes them collectible, or makes them special? Western Shirts: A Classic American Fashion follows both the history and collectible points of the Western shirt, offering a complete listing of Western shirt labels, covering everyday wear to costume wear, and adding plenty of photos, illustrations, and sidebars of information. A 'must' for any who either collect or love the Western shirt style.

    Book Description

Forget bucking broncos-some of the wildest sights in the West can be found right inside a cowpoke's closet. From fringed chaps and embroidered jeans to silver- spurred boots and ten-gallon Stetsons, Western wear is a uniquely American look that has romanced the entire world. Journalist Holly George-Warren and designer Michelle Freedman, aided by curator James H. Nottage, round up the different styles of this enduring trend in How the West Was Worn, an authoritative yet entertaining look at "glitterbillies," long riders, rodeo girls, and rhinestone cowboys.

Accompanying an exhibition at the Autry Museum of Western Heritage, this colorful tribute features archival photos of celebrities as well as collectibles like vintage album covers, mail-order catalogues, and sewing patterns. The lively, fact- filled text, including a foreword by country-music star and Western-wear collector Marty Stuart, makes this book a barrel of fun for fashion devotees and country music fans alike.

5 out of 5 stars A LUXE LOOK AT WESTERN GARB.......2001-11-13

If your idea of Western wear is John Wayne in chaps and creased 10 gallon hat - forget it. Rolling Stone Press Editor Holly George-Warren and clothing designer Michelle Freedman have produced a luxe look at Western garb that is more Las Vegas than Laredo.

The iconic American cowboy typifies our country's spirit to many, from New York City sidewalk stompers who have no saddles but don boots to diamond encrusted Grammy award winners who twang with the best of them.

So, for those attracted by the lore and lure of ranching days, here is a photographed filled bow to all garb Western. It begins with the practical clothing needed by scours, traders, and ranch workers, then details how early movie stars such as Tom Mix, Gene Autry, Dale Evans and Roy Rogers spurred a popular trend in cowboy wear.

That vogue was to later influence British rock musicians and high end fashion designers such as Ralph Lauren.
"There's a little bit of cowboy in everybody," the foreword states and that would be seem to be true as the pages of How The West Was Worn reveal glimpses of tastefully displayed silver buckles, jauntily worn Stetsons, and rhinestone embellished rigs that never saw a range.

5 out of 5 stars Wild & western romp chronicling the classic American costume.......2001-10-22

A colorful and comprehensive examination of American style at it's most iconic - the authors have done a wonderful job telling the story of how cowboy duds came to symbolize America the world over. A must have for anyone interested in the West, design, decorative arts, fashion, pop culture or Americana/American History. The book is gorgeously presented, expertly written and endlessly entertaining, the photography is beautiful, and the interviews are rare and revealing. From the plains and frontiers, to Buffalo Bill to the Hollywood Cowboy, Country & Western, Rock & Roll, the current fashion craze, the authors leave no cowpie unturned as they reveal how the cowboy hat became our collective unconscious. The most complete record of the lives and work of N. Turk, Rodeo Ben, and Nudie to date. How did the famed North Hollywood rodeo tailor get men in the 20th century to wear fanciful embroidered and rhinestoned creations, that became more and more elaborate in a competitive fervor to outshine each other?(And how did Keith Richards cause him to draw the line?) Find out. From the fanatical to the casual observer, and especially anyone who has ever bedazzled denim or worn a pair of cowboy boots, all will treasure this book.

Excellent little book. A must for any doll collector, especially those who collect internatinal dolls. Book is simply done but very informative. Lots of photos. As a maker of Pacific Island Dolls, I found it to be a jewel to add to my doll book collection and I ONLY purchase doll books that stand out to me, as I travel throughout the So. Pacific and cannot keep a large book collection. As a cultural Anthropologist, I find my doll collection and making hobby to be a fun and significalt addition to my work. All cultures of thew world have some form of "dolls" and they play different roles in all of them. I highly recommend this book to any collector of dolls/books. My only complaint is that it is not long enough. A very exciting find to me ! Well written by Mother/Daughter team who also have written other doll books I hope to add to my collection. Buy this book ! Small price for the content of information on a rarely focused on subject.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully produced and providing hours of fun.......2006-02-19

I am so impressed with the Kaya paper dolls and my 8 year old daughter adores them -they are the favourite plaything. As a lover of paper dolls from childhood I have always provided by daughter with lots of good quality paper dolls that provide lots of imaginative play as well as open her mind to children and people from different times and places. Up until now I didn't think the Little House Paper Dolls could be beat - then we found American Girl. The book has a velcro clasp on the side of the front cover to hold everything in place sideways, at the back is Kaya's purflece which folds from top to bottom with a clasp to hold everything in place lengthways - nothing falls out or becomes lost. The quality of the paper is fabulous - dolls are rigid (and there are three - Kaya and her two friends all full size) and glossy, clothes are just the right stiffness and glossy and so detailed! Every outfit comes with something for her hair or to carry or for her feet or a belt or a necklace and everything has on the back what it is and what it was used for and would have been made from. Awesome! We are learning so much and this information adds so much to my daugter's play. There are small pages to cut from each page and at the back a front and back cover and instructions on how to assemble the whole into a little book that tells part of Kaya's story. It is as if the book was designed by someone who loved paper dolls as a child and thought of everything she had always wanted in her paper dolls so had the chance to do it with the American Girls. I recommend the Kaya dolls so highly and we are looking forward to adding more American Girl Paper dolls to our collection. We love Kaya!
