This book is an excellent source for an introduction to contemporary photography in the US. With only one photograph from each photographer, it allows for a large variety of subject matter and shooting styles, giving you just a taste of The print job is excellent as well.
Beautiful scenery, but RECKLESS NUDITY.......2006-01-21
This book is a lovely book in many ways. Many of the pictures are breathtakingly beautiful. This collection presents many everyday objects in new and interesting ways. One of my favorite pictures features the regression of time from the present day office environment to the Garden of Eden.
I offer one major disclaimer about this book: It features outright nudity in several pictures. I found a few photographs distasteful and unwanted. I had wished to give this book as a present, but upon seeing these pieces, knew that it would be inappropriate for many of my friends. I was sorely dissappointed that nudity was not mentioned anywhere in the book's description!
If you enjoy abstract/daring pieces of artwork, then you might appreciate this book. However, if you seek wholesome and clean art, please do not buy this book!!

A Joy.......2000-06-21
If, like me, you enjoy photography books more for the photos than for the accompanying text then you will find American Photographs 1900-2000 a joy. Of the 400 pages that make up this volume, only 6 pages have text. The rest are devoted to a wide and wonderful range of photographs. It is simply and stylishly laid out. Each left had page lists the photographer, the title, the date, size and type of the photograph. On the opposing right-hand page the accompanying photograph is beautifully reproduced. The plates are not 'cramped', as they can be in other books commemorating a century's worth of photography. Photojournalism, fashion photography, scientific photography, 'art' photography and Hollywood glamour photography are all covered. It is a pleasure to own.

The photography contained in this book is masterful! The black and white and color photos capture the essence of a country on the move. The captions help the reader to connect events and people to American history.

In this new edition, Wilson adds an afterword to her original award-winning photographic essay, published in 1989 when Watt Matthews was ninety years old and the vital force behind a vast West Texas ranch. Watt was the ninth and last child of pioneering parents who had established the ranch on the banks of the Clear Fork of the Brazos in 1858, and, in the words of historian David McCullough, "created a family kingdom so large and still so true to its traditional way of life that visitors sometimes have to remind themselves that it is all real." Except for four years at Princeton, Watt spent his entire life on the ranch, which had remained its own separate world into the late twentieth century. Those days are beautifully chronicled in Wilson's photographs and, in this new edition, she brings the story of Lambshead Ranch up to the present by writing of Watt's funeral and what has happened to the ranch since Watt's death in 1997.

I enjoy this book every time I look at it. The culture of Papua is beautifully told and well illustrated. A good introduction for me about a
country I will never be able to visit.

Rather folk costumes of Europe than of the world.......2006-06-11
I'm very interested in folk costumes and found this book informative with beautiful illustrations, BUT...it's not, as it claims, a book of folk costumes of the world.
Europe (where I live) is shown thoroughly, with examples of costumes even from islands like Sicily, Madeira and Tenerife, while there are not very many costumes from Asia. Africa is represented only by some costumes from North Africa and Ethiopia, Oceania only by Maori costumes. Just four-five of the many gorgeous Amerindian costumes are shown and although Cuba is described in the text, no costumes are shown in the book. I would say the book is eurocentric. If you want to learn more about costumes from Europe, do buy this book, but NOT if you want to look at costumes from all over the world.

A Gem of A Book.......2000-06-17
I have used this "Treasure of A Book" for the last 20 years, when I first found a copy of it in my town's local library when I was 19 years of age. It has been especially useful while I went and after I graduated from Fashion Design School in Los Angeles. It has been an invaluable reference book, whenever I needed to find an ethic costume. For example, if I want to draw a Korean women in original costume dress. I just look under the country, alphabetically and there it is. I can easily see the traditional dress and sketch it. All the illustrations are excellent and show very good detail. The book does a very good job of representing many different ethic costumes of the world, even ones in countries that no longer exist. Many of the ethic costume designs are still used to this day in the countries that they come from. I have used it to draw illustrations showing different children from around the world. Also, I have used it for other kinds purposes including graphic design illustrations for restaurant menus and restaurant ads. I have returned to this book, over and over, as the best resource for all my needs. Even though, it was published in 1977, I still to this day find it the very best book of its kind.
