Multi-generational impact.......2003-09-16
This is a wonderful idea for strengthening relationships with older and younger generations. We are going to try it in our church. We may alter the program a bit as it is quite ambitious, but I think we can make it work. Be willing to work with it and don't get bogged down in the details of making it look just like the model.
Get enough books to start your own group.......2000-05-25
If you can find some mentors to lead you and friends through this study do it, but don't be afraid to start your own group. This is great for a neighborhood study. JE

Book Description
Why are sheep in a remote Egyptian village cutting their own throats?...That's the mystery Emperor Justinian in-explicably sends his Lord Chamberlain John the Eunuch to solve, at the very time John desperately needs to clear himself of accusations he murdered a senator in the Hippodrome.
Mehenopolis, a pilgrim destination thanks to its ancient shrine to a snake deity as well as the home of the late sheep, is nearly as byzantine in its ways and undercurrents as Constantinople.
Among suspicious characters John encounters are a pretentious local landowner battling a self-styled magician for control of the lucrative shrine, an exiled heretical cleric, an itinerant bee-keeper, and a disgraced charioteer. Meanwhile, in Constantinople, John's good friend Anatolius does his best to trace the senator's murderer.
At stake are not only John's honor and his head, but also the family with whom he recently reunited, now in danger of being broken apart or worse.
Customer Reviews:
A pilgrim destination, an ancient shrine, and a battle with a magician.......2006-04-21
Mary Reed and Eric Mayer's SIX FOR GOLD: A JOHN THE EUNUCH MYSTERY tells of sheep killings and the accusation of political murder. A pilgrim destination, an ancient shrine, and a battle with a magician are only a few of the subplots involving John's investigative skills. All pair strong characterization with plots and subplots to keep even the seasoned mystery fan guessing.
Another Terrific John the Eunuch Mystery.......2006-01-31
Another terrific installment in the John the Eunuch series. Accused of murdering a senator , John is saved from torture and execution by being banished by Emperor Justinian. Justinian sends him to Egypt to solve the mystery of why sheep in an Egyptian village are slitting their own throats. John finds the local landowner locked in battle with a magician who both want control of the land and the mysterious maze/shrine that is on it. And back in Constantinople John's friends and family desperately try to prove his innocence.
A fascinating look into the historical time of Emperor Justinian, a time of plague and the conflict between the Christians and pagans. Loaded with wonderful historic detail and a terrific mystery. John is a likeable hero and the supporting characters are quirky and wonderful. Historical mystery lovers will want to be sure to read all the books in this series as will everyone else. It's well written, with great characters, a lively mystery and lots of well researched historical detail.
Great John the Eunuch story.......2006-01-07
In plague-infested Constantinople, Justinian's Lord Chamberlain, John the Eunuch, is suspected of murdering a Senator. Exiled to Egypt where, supposedly, sheep are committing suicide by cutting their own throats, John must somehow stay alive--a task made more difficult by the assassin Empress Theodora is certain to have sent after him, and by the insistance by his wife Cornelia, and his servant, Peter, that they accompany him.
John knows that Justinian always works more than one angle. Suicidal sheep, while interesting, would hardly be enough to motivate the great Roman Emperor to send his trusted servant to Egypt. Something else must have attracted his attention--something so dangerous he couldn't even trust John with what he feared. Yet the Egyptian oasis seems to contain nothing but a tax-evading landlord, a gameplaying priest, superstitious peasants, and a magician whose magic tricks are as old as the Pharaohs. Justinian could have been wrong--but if he was, John is the one who's likely to pay the price.
Back in Constantinople, John's friend Anatolius investigates the mystery of the murdered Senator. Clearly John didn't do it. Whether John's dodgy son-in-law might have been involved is less clear. But the murder seems to involve the religious schism between the orthodox, championed by Justinian, and the monophysites, championed by Theodora. That the monophysites were dominant in Egypt, and that John was exiled to that province didn't sound like coincidence. Still, what could it mean.
Authors Mary Reed and Eric Mayer continue their charming John the Eunuch series with a story that takes John far from Constantinople, returning him to Egypt--the land where he and Cornelia first met. Egypt has always been a land of magic and mystery and it certainly is in SIX FOR GOLD--starting with Peter's discovery of the cat-mummy industry and the monkey-headed giant snake. The religious disputes between orthodox and monophysites was a huge part of the history of this time and Reed and Meyer do a good job presenting it in the context of a historical mystery. John's own worship of Mithra, the Persian sun-god, adds richness to the story.
SIX FOR GOLD is filled with comic touches--I especially like the bumbling but effective Peter, as well as his part in solving the mystery of the suicidal sheep. The mysterious maze in the Egyptian oasis might not be historical, but it should be.
Fans of historical mystery will definitely want to grab this latest in the John the Eunuch series. I have no hesitation in recommending SIX FOR GOLD.
fabulous historical mystery .......2005-12-07
In Constantinople, the Lord Chamberlain John the Eunuch is arrested for the murder of Senator Symacchus in the Hippodrome. The Empress Theodora demands justice, which means an eye for an eye or perhaps a tongue. Instead Emperor Justinian gives John a chance to buy some time to have his innocence proven. He exiles John to Egypt to learn why sheep are committing suicide on a settlement up river from Alexandria while the eunuch's best friend Anatolius investigates the senatorial murder.
John boards the Minotaur only to find his wife Cornelius and his elderly servant Peter waiting to go with him. John and his entourage reach their destination, the city of Mehenopolis, home of a sacred ancient shrine to the snake deity. The city turns out to be more Byzantium than Constantinople is as it hosts many visitors to the shrine and residents who want to make their fortune from the foolish outside believers. Anyone of them could be the cause of why the sheep are slashing their throats.
SIX FOR GOLD is a fabulous historical mystery that showcases an era when Christianity and paganism battle for supremacy. The vivid story line brings to life an area of Egypt rarely if ever used in novels so that the audience obtains an even greater taste of the true first "world war" fought over religious principles. John is a terrific protagonist struggling to solve the case of the suicidal sheep even as he ponders what will happen to him and his family once he returns home because the investigation he left behind will turn into a cold case by the time he comes home. Mary Reed & Eric Mayer once again make the John the Eunuch mysteries one of the best historical tales on the market today.
Harriet Klausner
Suspense and plenty of local 6th century color.......2005-12-01
This sixth John the Eunuch mystery opens with a chase through 6th-century Constantinople's Hippodrome and dockside grain stores as John, lord chamberlain to Emperor Justinian, dodges the spears of palace guards only to be undone by a rat, literally.
Charged with the murder of a senator and brought before the Emperor (thwarting the Empress Theodora of a savored chance to torture her nemesis), John is sent to Egypt, ostensibly banished, but actually charged with investigating a local mystery of suicidal sheep and furthering the Emperor's search for a powerful religious relic.
His irreverent wife, Cornelia and devout Christian servant Peter join John, making their own unique contributions to figuring out why sheep would slash their own throats and what lies at the heart of the rivalry between the local headman and the interloper magician. The magician's powers range from blatantly fake to spectacular, and the headman, while less dazzling, is equally devious.
Wry and observant, John, who has seen much of the worst the world has to offer, stays a step ahead of the reader, while back in Constantinople his friend Anatolius, daughter Europa and brash, rash son-in-law Thomas work to unravel the senator's murder. From brothels, magical shrines and plague fears to palace intrigues and everyday details, the authors seamlessly work historical atmosphere into the cleverly plotted mystery and leaven it with just the right amount of humor. Fans will enjoy the latest chapter in John's tumultuous life and newcomers will be drawn to earlier adventures.

Achieve your desired success.......2006-10-16
Reviewed by Susan Pettrone for Reader Views (9/06)
"Level Six Performance" is a book that not only offers a blueprint for professional and personal success but backs up its theory through real life experiences of gold medal Olympians - illustrating for the reader the path to success.
"Level Six Performance" teaches the reader not only how to think smart and reach a high level of achievement, but how to maintain that high level and avoid those areas in life that can ultimately mean performance disaster. It focuses not only on achieving and maintaining success but addresses the importance of integrity and strength of character and those roles in success. In emphasizing the importance of such traits, the reader sees how they are vital to achieving the desired success.
In the early pages of this book we are introduced to the author's "Performance Triad" and its three components; intelligence, knowledge, and thinking. All three combine to lead the reader to "high performance". Simply put: "Intelligence" is defined as an indicator of possibilities within a person's life...it is the potential for success. "Knowledge is very simply; what you know the wisdom and information we have to succeed" and Thinking" is what you believe, suppose or how you recall. It should be noted however that thinking is oftentimes brushed aside as unimportant, when it well could be the most vital part of this triad. All three are important on their own but vital to success when combined. It is only with all three of the components firmly in place that success has a sound base and is within the grasp of the reader.
As this book progresses, we are lead through three sections entitled; "Learn to win", "Prepare to win" and "Play to win". Each of these sections illustrates, through word and real life examples, how each is an important part of the whole of the formula for success. The reader is taught how each builds upon the other and intertwines to reach success.
Through the use of illustrative stories of 17 Olympians, having between them a total of 25 gold medals; the reader sees first hand how the principles within this book work. The author underlines within each story how the principles of "Level Six Performance" were applied within each Olympians' life and contributed to their success. It is within these stories that the reader comprehends how "Level Six Performance" can and has proven to be a guide for success.
Integrity and a deep sense of value are constants within this book, as well, and it is not long before the reader can easily perceive that true success comes not only from without but from within. Value and integrity are firm bases upon which the individuals within, all, build and grow.
This book is full off insight and information, and the section on self perception is no exception. Self perception and how it affects success in a personal way is an aspect that each must find deep within themselves without outside help. Even though it sounds simple to acquire a high sense of self, it is in fact, one area that we oftentimes find ourselves struggling to obtain while maintaining balance and stability. Self perception is challenged on an everyday basis and "Level Six Performance" clearly shows the reader how necessary strong self perception is as a key role in success, whatever that may be.
I recommend this book to anyone seeking guidance in the path to success in both their personal and business lives. Within this book are all the elements that one needs to choose the right path and follow it to the end, reaping the harvest of true success. One note should be made, however - it is not enough to merely read this book - one must apply the principles within and be consistent as well. While the principles do not promise overnight success, they will lead the reader toward the ultimate goal. Hard work and dedication will help the reader achieve the success desired.
The Introduction is Worth the Price of the Book.......2006-02-14
Level Six Performance is a great book and the tools that Dr. Long offers can be applied to any performance situation that I'm in, whether it be sales, or continuing education and training, or leading a team that's developing a strategy for a new product launch.
However, the real value of the book is found in the introduction. Don't overlook this part of the book--the introduction alone is worth the price of the book! Long frames the entire book with his explaination of Level Six Performance.
The introduction makes it understood that this book is a performance manual based on sound information and research, not simply a textbook. More authors should do what Dr. Long has done--make the research applicable!
Anyone Can Achieve Excellence.......2006-02-07
Level Six Performance is like nothing I've ever read. Steve Long assembled
a group of Olympic champions that proves that excellence is available to
anyone. It doesn't matter what race you are--Peter Westbrook is
African-American, Lovie Jung is Asian-American, Billy Mills is
Native-American. It doesn't matter if you're male or female--10 men and 7
women featured. It doesn't matter if you're young or old--Jeremy Bloom is
24 and Angela Ruggiero is 25, Phil Mahre and Peter Vidmar are in their 40's,
Billy Mills is in 60's and Al Oerter is in his 70's! It doesn't matter
whether you're a college grad or not--Will Carlin has degrees from three Ivy
League schools and several of the Olympians never attended college. It
doesn't matter if you're from the inner city (Peter Westbrook and Al Oeter)
or the suburbs (Diann Roffe and Donna Weinbrecht) and Billy Mills grew up on
an Indian reservation in South Dakota. Level Six Performance demonstrates
that anyone can achieve their dreams as long as they have access to proven
tools. Level Six Performance is a big tent where everyone can fit under.

GOOD - BETTER - BEST!!!!.......2006-02-03
"Level Six Performance" presents a detailed, well articulated, step-by-step plan that anyone can use to become a champion. Using examples from Olympic heroes and the same no-nonsense style that helped Dr. Long mentor championship teams at the Air Force Academy, this book describes how people can succeed in both their careers and in their personal lives. "Level Six Performance" is a must read for anyone looking to reach the highest levels of performance.
Book Description
Bear's Boys is a collection of inspiring stories featuring 36 men whose lives were altered by their encounter with the legendary coach while they were players and coaches at Alabama. The stories of star players such as Joe Namath, Ken Stabler, Marty Lyons, Bob Baumhower, Ozzie Newsome, and Gene Stallings show how the Coach forever changed them as young men and ball players on the field and later in life after football.
When Bob Baumhower was released from the Dolphins in 1986, he immediately did what Coach Bryant would have done: he made a plan. Instead of feeling sorry for himself, he snapped into practical mode. First, he sold his boat and his big house. Then, he systematically began exploring business opportunities and setting goals for the next several decades of his life. When he started his first restaurant, he knew he had yet another chance to apply the principles he learned on the football field in real life. "Coach Bryant said there's a lot of blood, sweat and guts between dreams and success," Baumhower said. "That's true in the restaurant business. . . . Today, every success I have, every win that I have, in my opinion, came from the fact that Coach Bryant cared enough to talk to me and turn the light on for me
Includes stories for such men as 1) Gene Stallings 2) Bob Baumhower 3) Dwight Stephenson 4) Joe Namath 5) Ken Stabler 6) Johnny Musso 7) Barry Krauss 8) Marty Lyons 9) John Mitchell 10) John Croyle 11) Jerry Duncan 12) Leroy Jordan 13) Ozzie Newsome 14) Billy Neighbors 15) Cornelius Bennett 16) John Hannah 17) Mal Moore 18) Joey Jones 19) Terry Jones 20) Tony Nathan 21) Wilbur Jackson 22) Don McNeal 23) Ray Perkins 24) Bill Battle 25) Sylvester Croom

fun fantasy novel, probably could have used more pages.......2006-08-02
This book looks like a case of the book having material cut to keep within BL target page length. Most notably, the stand-alone story of the priest of morr abruptly ends after the affair of the countess and the assassin despite many implied events later when he re-enters the story.
this fantasy story, at times in spite of itself, was enjoyabe to read. the plot was nothing complex and the end result somewhat cliche, but the multi-thread storyline made up for many flaws. I was surprised to learn that a sword could slice (not stab) through plate mail like a 'hot iron through ice.' additionally, it is annoying to read about men running around in full plate all the time, that stuff is HEAVY. knights would never put all that on except to be mounted before combat. this is a common issue in warhammer in general, not just here, and reminds me of the movie excalibur with knights going to dinner in full plate.
maybe warhammer plate mail is lighter?
in any event, this is still a fun book. if you like the genre, good way to spend a few hours.
Hammers of Ulric.......2005-11-03
Genre:Science Fiction
Author:Dan Abnett
Three Sentence Summory:This book is about a new templer Alric who wants to join the order of the Wolf Priests, who are known for their massive hammers and battle skills. Alric and the wolves later discover a evil choas scheme working in their city and set out to destroy it before it destroys them. They manage to find the layer in which it dwells and together they vaquish it but not after taking some dear losses.
What I liked about this book:The Wolves would never stop fighting even when the odds were completely against them.
What I didn't like:Some of the wolves minds became clouded by chaos and passion.
A paassage in the book that relates to me (page number):page 236 "Let the hammers ride again!" Thats a qoute that has tons of power behind it and show that the Wolves fear little to nothing.
A question I have after the book:The Oder of the Wolf was heavyly damaged during the book and i wandered if they were ever able to fully repair the damage.
Extraordinary storytelling..........2005-05-25
... isn't something you normally expect from joint-effort novels, but this book turned out to be a nice surprise. Being my first Warhammer novel, I dont really know how it compares to the others, but I was really impressed. The world of Warhammer is just what I've been looking for. Mature fantasy in a dark and magical world. Good vs. Evil and intriguing characters that dont really fit into either of those categories. If other Warhammer novels are as good as this one, I'll be reading many more.
Hammers of Ulric is an exciting and fun book to read. The story line is intense and suspensful, the characters are awesome. The whole story is full of mayhem and destruction, even some of my favorite characters meet brutal ends (which makes the story more realistic and interesting). The White Wolves of Ulric are nearly unstoppable and really fun to read about. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for some hack-and-slash/dark fantasy adventure.
Very pleasant surprise.......2000-11-21
This book turned out to be a most pleasant surprise. As a collector of Warhammer products in the past, I was intrigued to find that a book had appeared about the White Wolves. That alone made me buy it. But what I did not expect was the high quality of the story-telling. Although the plot is not original, and the resolution rather unimpressive, the biggest asset of the story is - well, the story-telling itself. The three authors succeed in creating a very authentic Warhammer atmosphere, gritty, grim, and believable. Characters from many different backgrounds take part in the story - priest of a death god, rogues, servant girl, nobles, determined knights, arrogant knights, wizard, old crone, etc. - very many of whom contribute significantly to the weaving, but not complicated, plot. And the wonder is that they are all weaved together into a fascinating story that keeps the reader in suspense - we are not even given a clear picture of the Big Foozle until about 60 pages from the end. But the destruction of the Foozle is not important in this book - it is the telling and the growth of all the characters in the book that give it its magic. Everything is there - the grim funeral rites, the training lesson, the chance meetings, the amusing love relationship, the treasure-hunting, the possession, the search for things lost... Resolutions come both in expected ways and unexpected ways - there are little lessons of sacrifice, honour, friendship, personal growth and even about death. The only flaw with the book, perhaps, is that its plot could have easily been stretched over a trilogy - which would give much more breathing space for the telling of the story. Nevermind - still highly recommended!

Aric rode forward across the corpse-strewn ground and helped Gruber to his feet. The older warrior was speckled with blood, but alive. "See to von Glick and watch the standard. Give me your horse," Gruber said to Aric. Arick dismounted and returned to the banner of Vess as Gruber galloped back into the brutal fray. Von Glick lay next to the standard, which was still stuck upright in the bloody earth. The lifeless bodies of almost a dozen beastmen lay around him. "L-let me see..." von Glick breathed. Aric knelt beside him and raised his head. "So, Anspach's bold plan worked..." breathed the beteran warrior. "He's pleased... I'll wager." Aric started to laugh, then stopped. The old man was dead. In the savage world of Warhammer, dark powers gather around the ancient mountain-top city of Middenheim, the City of the White Wolf. Only the noble Templar Knights of Ulric and a few unlikely allies stand to defend her against the insidious servants of Death.
