Book Description

90-year-old General Fendman was definitely dead, but no one knew exactly when he had died -- and the time of death was the determining factor in a half-million-pound inheritance. Lord Peter Wimsey would need every bit of his amazing skills to unravel the mysteries of why the General's lapel was without a red poppy on Armistice Day, how the club's telephone was fixed without a repairman, and, most puzzling of all, why the great man's knee swung freely when the rest of him was stiff with rigor mortis.

5 out of 5 stars Sayer's Opus magnus.......2007-06-09

I'm really into audiobook (and book) mysteries -- I've heard/read hundreds. This one is in my top five and I listen to it over and over. Magnificently performed, Lord Peter Wimsey is at his best here and the reader does a fine job. If you love a good Christie-type English mystery, leap on this one as fast as you can. I cannot say enough good about it.

5 out of 5 stars Engaging and suspenseful mystery set in simpler more gracious times........2006-06-26

Lord Peter is at his best in this mystery novel which gives us 21st century dwellers a view of English post WWI culture, specifically the Men's club. In the process of untangling this convoluted mystery, Lord Peter touches on some of his own issues regarding his military service and some resulting psychological scars.

Despite all this, Lord Peter chases the criminal with class, wit and ridiculous humor. He never takes himself too seriously, and is always charming--even when the stessed out subjects of investigation lash out at him.

Lord Peter has two perennial sidekicks--Bunter, his perfect butler, and Parker, the police detective. Both of these men are excellent at their trade and balance Peter's ridiculously good humor with sedate and serious good sense. Peter is a brilliant intuitive which contrasts with his piercing deductive mind. Bunter has good insight into human character and Parker has dogged determination and the abilty to integrate diverse evidence.

Despite the sometimes dated language, Sayers has the knack of writing an engaging and suspenseful mystery as well as taking us back in time to simpler more gracious times.

5 out of 5 stars The old club just isn't what it used to be.......2006-05-19

Lord Peter Wimsey has planned on spending a quiet Armistice Day, just stop by the Bellona Club, reminisce with some old friends and then a quiet memorial dinner. But since this is Lord Peter Wimsey, the aristoctratic amateur sleuth, (and this is a mystery novel) a death soon occurs. The deceased is old General Fentiman and since he is ninety his passing is rather sad but not surprising. Not at all the sort of thing to arouse Lord Peter's notice until the exact time of the old General's death becomes a matter of vital importance to his heirs, one of whom is a friend of Lord Peter.

As Wimsey looks deeper into the matter he becomes involved in the art world, a jilted lover, domestic tension and even receives a proposal. Of course he unravels the mysteries in the end, bringing the guilty to justice and protecting the innocent.

As always with this series the glimpses into Lord Peter's world are as entertaining as the mystery itself. We are treated to visits with Inspector Parker, Bunter, and Marjorie Phelps and if those names mean nothing to you, you would probably do better to start this series with one of the earlier books. For fans of the series this is a definite must read.

4 out of 5 stars An unpleasantness that could have been more pleasing. .......2004-08-21

When an elderly gentleman, ensconced in a winged back leather chair close up to the fire and apparently reading the "Times", is found to be dead the word for this event, occurring as it does in a respectable London club in the 1920s, is "unpleasantness". When Lord Peter Wimsey investigates further and discovers that the death is actually murder, it is still not proper, in the Bellona Club, to abandon the euphemism "unpleasantness". Thus is established the tone and the subject of Dorothy L Sayers' fifth work of detective fiction, written in 1928.

Readers of "Golden Age" detective fiction will find the usual wit and polish in the writing and a central idea for a crime that derives from nice points of logic and a specialized knowledge of anatomy and medicine. Somehow these strengths, together with a preponderance of dialogue, also account for the book's weakness. It lacks atmosphere. After describing the opening scene in the Bellona Club with great care and effect, Miss Sayers rarely thereafter gives a thought to sketching in details of time, place, action or surroundings.

So this is one of Dorothy L Sayers' books that will always provide me with entertainment and rich enjoyment, while making me aware that it does not quite provide everything I ask of great detective fiction.

4 out of 5 stars A death in the sitting room.......2003-03-07

This book shows the charming and dry British humor. The setting: an old austere British club in 1928. On Remembrance Day, three men are sitting down to lunch. One notices an old soldier sitting not far away. He has a newpaper in front of him and a drink to his side. He is quite dead, and so the Unpleasantness begins. Wonderful

                    Book Description

Five years after defeating the Dark Ones, the embattled inhabitants of the once-great Keep of Dare face a yet more deadly foe. An icy-cold force was spreading across the northlands, spawning strange creatures that killed everything in their grisly path . . .

Archmage Ingold Inglorion believed the source of this monstrous evil lay in the decadent lands to the south. With him traveled Gil Patterson, the scholar-warrior from Earth who had forsaken her own universe for love of the mage.  Determined to aid him in his quest, she was cursed to become the instrument of his death.

Ingold's apprentice Rudy Solis was left behind, the sole wizard standing between the Keep of Dare and the nightmare creatures besieging it. Rudy struggled tirelessly with wavering magic to ward off the virulent attacks of the ice mage's minions. But when someone attacked the widowed queen--the woman he loved--Rudy was forced to plumb the ultimate secret locked in the black crystal heart of the Keep of Dare . . . and so decide the fate of the world.

                    5 out of 5 stars Back with a Shiver.......2005-08-11

This return to the world of Darwath is even colder than the the original trilogy, as the ice age predicted by Gil has truly begun to descend. Not only is the weather growing colder but everything is more hostile as mysterious slunch grows over all ground, gradually destroying every plant it comes into contact with and being basically indestructible. The remnants of the realm are still sheltered within the (hopefully) impregnable Keep of Dare and while Rudy attempts to help his love Minalde hold the Keep together in the face of divergent factions Gil and Ingold Inglorien search for the Mother of Winter, the cause of these recent ills.

As with Hambly's other works I especially appreciated the gritty realism. This is no fairy tale world where everybody lives lives just as good as we do in 21st century America (but they happen to have kings, swords, dragons, and magic). Perhaps this realism is achieved because two of the characters are native Californians who can directly comment on the differences to their former life, and suggest improvements (such as in sanitation). Furthermore, while the characters we follow are well connected the political situation isn't one of absolute control so there is a healthy bit of uncertainty about what will happen, even if proper solutions are discovered.

No longer even considering returning to Earth, Gil and Rudy have fully settled into life in the keep. I only recently started reading the series, but I already feel as though these are old friends along with Ingold and Minalde.

In some ways the book is a bit of a mystery, as you're not sure what is going on in the first pages, but you follow the efforts of Gil, Ingold, Rudy, Minalde, and Minalde's now five-year-old son Tir to unravel the mystery of the slunch and the keep itself.

If you have read the original Darwath Trilogy this is indeed a worthy successor that will keep your attention to the last page. If you've not read the first books then please start with them: The Time of the Dark, The Walls of Air, and The Armies of Daylight.

I would also recomend Hambly's Windrose Chronicles (for more Americans crossing into fantasy realms), and her Sun Wolf and Star Hawk trilogy.

5 out of 5 stars Oh yeah! We like this series........2002-01-15

I absolutely loved the original trilogy and have read it multiple times.

Just when you thought there wouldn't be more to add to this series Hambly pumps out another good story.

This is a book in and of its own...it isn't necessary to read the earlier books. But there are reoccuring characters from the earlier books and having read those made this more enjoyable.

1 out of 5 stars tedious overdescription annoying.......1999-07-20

Ya know good stories take many forms but bad ones are remarkaly consistent. Bad stories tend to have either weak characters, poor plot, or too much description. Such is the case of this overwrought hambly potboiler. Why use one adjective when 3 or 4 will do? She constantly goes off track with endless exposition, and bores us with details at best trivial. The end result is a story that steams along at a snails pace en I felt never really engages the reader. I see by the bio that hambly once taught high school. I hope never taught english because any english teacher I know worth their salt would have known better than to overwrite every page in this book!

                    5 out of 5 stars weep for darwarth..i do.......1998-08-24

                    Again BH throws us into darwarth, a world where anarchy and chaos rule. Society is crushig down, church takes over, with all the terrible consequences that appear only when reason is substituted by faith and prejeduce. The describtion of a once splendid culture now reduced to ruins made my heart cry. You also almost want to cry out in pain for the knowledge, the books that are destroyed. It is as if the ghost of Claude Maniere participated : "... knowledge - written treasure; once found; and now forever lost;

knowledge - yes; but wisdom never; wraiths are paying now the cost..."

But in this environment of hopelessness and despair there is hope, life. The story of Ingold and GIl, Rudy and Sante goes on blooms and makes me long for more

I have read this very enjoyable book to young children in elementary school for the past fifteen years. It's a great book to read during the month of January.

This is a mother and son book and all the things mother could do with her son during this long winter month. But of course mother is too busy or does she just hate January? I always ask the children whether mother really hates them and of course they know she loves them very much.

This delightful book by Judy Delton is a fun book to read in January. She writes many interesting books, but this is one of my favorites.

Tulliver is a little rabbit who hates washing his face. One day he decides he has had enough and leaves home to live in a burrow under a big oak tree at the far end of the field. When nighttime comes, and Tulliver’s burrow is not finished, a very hungry, muddy, and miserable rabbit settles down to sleep. Perhaps he isn’t ready to leave home after all? Diana Reynolds Roome’s playful text and Susan Winter’s beautiful illustrations make this an ideal book for reading aloud.

...In that the book went along great for a while. Made sense, moving pace, interesting characters, but then it delved into something akin to a hallucinogenic cartoon paradise and ceased to make sense.

I still don't understand why Pippa's solution to her daughter being taken away was to run off to a cabin in the woods and "find her inner witch." Then she donned some ratty clothing given to her by a sympathizer and, dressed as an old crone, paraded her way into town, scaring the townsfolk in the process.

I was hoping for a saner book. Before that point of Wizard of Oz-esque fantasy, it was a very good book. Richard Grant is a very good writer and has a lot to offer. I'm interested in his other books, but In the Land of Winter left me a bit dubious.

I hope he writes more, but leaves the Heinleinish acid trips out of it.

I must agree with Ms. Jordan. I so wanted to love this book, and I kept hoping that it would improve as I read. It never really did. It was difficult to sympathize with Pippa--the journey to reclaim her child seemed secondary to her own quest to discover herself. And I'm still not sure what exactly she discovered. Pippa's passivity made me continually want to scream, "Ye gods, girl, don't just stand there, DO SOMETHING!" None of the characters seemed very well fleshed out, the plot meandered to a most unlikely ending, and when it was all over, I thought, "what a great story poorly done." A disappointment.

1 out of 5 stars Sorry, I agree with Kirkus Reviews.......2004-05-18

I hoped this book would provide a thoughtful exploration of intolerance, discrimination and pagan practices. What I got was a novel filled with cartoon characters. I am no fan of religious zealots of any creed, but Pippa's persecutors were so stereotypical they had me rolling my eyes in disbelief. They might as well have been wagging their fingers at her and shouting "She's a witch, burn her!" in Monty-Pythonesque voices.

Pippa wasn't a particularly believable modern witch, either. When she should be fighting tooth and nail to get her daughter back, she goes off to the woods to find her inner witchiness or some such nonsense.

I only finished the book because I really, really wanted to like it, but I just didn't.

                      4 out of 5 stars A great book!.......2003-08-20

Grant writes a beautiful story that had me cheering for Pippa & Winterbelle against the ignorant masses.

5 out of 5 stars Should be considered a classic.......2003-07-09

Beautifully written, deeply felt, and dealing with some of the most prevalent issues of humankind, In the Land of Winter should be considered a classic American novel.

Grant bravely explores the politics of religion in America, coupled with the part of the human psyche which allows otherwise normal people to join in ravening, thoughtless mobs. Why are scapegoats chosen? Why do people in the mob so easily lose their humanity? The way Grant goes about exposing this human darkness, and his way of dramatizing it, is sheer genius.

Besides beautiful language, there's sharp characterization, great dialogue, and incredible description. And even flashes of masterful wit and humor.

The hysteria over Satanic ritual abuse may be passe, but the human inclination to see "witches" around every corner, and blame them for everything from crop failure to ADD, is still very much with us. For that reason, unfortunately In the Land of Winter will never be dated.

A number of people might object to seeing their Christian religion portrayed as less than attractive. The chief villain in Land of Winter is a Christian. I doubt she is meant to represent the best Christianity has to offer. Grant makes sure that the protagonist understands this. So, before flying into moral outrage, try to remember a few things. One, turnabout is fair play--Christians have portrayed non-Christian religions for centuries as the evil villains. And two, pray for some humility and open mindedness. Try to learn something from the perspective of those who live outside your paradigm. It could be a valuable learning experience.

                          Copycub loves playing games,
                          especially with his mother

Copycub loves to play games, especially hide-and-seek with his mother. The little bear hides in bushes, in dark corners of bear caves, and even in the sticks of a beaver dam. "Can't find me here," calls Copycub. "Oh, yes, I can," exclaims the mother bear. And she finds him every time.

One afternoon, while the two bears are exploring in the woods, Copycub remembers a secret place for hiding and runs very deep into the forest. When he calls for his mother to find him, there is no reply. Copycub begins to realize that hiding from his mother isn't always so much fun. It is beginning to grow dark in the forest and there are many strange noises. Copycub is lost! Mother bear has always found her little bear in the past. Will she find him this time, too?

Richard Edwards' simple, gentle text is heartwarming and inspiring. All the rich details of nature and the tender interaction between mother bear and cub are made real in Susan Winter's soft watercolor illustrations.

My toddler loves this book. I think the illustrations are beautiful and the story is great to help children understand the difference between playing hide and seek, and hiding away when parents are distracted. The book is a good bedtime story. It gives children the reassurance that mothers are always there for them.

I take into consideration the author's way of writing and find this an excellent story.
Having met Nick in WOMAN IN HIDING - I was happy to follow his story along with his daughter.
Samantha understandably at not quite 17 and still in High School is prevailed upon by her parents to give up her child.

Nick, at 20 is still in college, but wants very much to marry Sam. And raise their baby. He warns her that if she gives up the child he will sue for full custody. Which he does.

He has spent 13 years raising his daughter. The last 8 years he has been at the Grand Teton National Park as their biologist.
He and Jessica have become very close friends with Chief Ranger Pierce Gallagher and his son, Cory. And especially so since Pierce lost his wife.

Now Samantha Bretton wants to at least see the daughter that she gave up. And she does ask Nick for permission. Trying to tie up the loose ends of her life since battling with cancer. She has found out that life carries no guarentees of happily ever after.

Nick does not want to let Sam back into their life but he bases his decision on the good to his daughter. Therein lies a lot of confusion and attraction and his fear of another rejection.

He has a number of talks with Pierce. As he had been there for Pierce and his emotional trauma.

Sam comes up with a way to balance their lives together [she is a lawyer which the Park needs] but [to me] she seems to be a screwy individual. [too emotional, or paranoid to suit me]
Still the story was pretty decent - just not overly exciting.

Definitely recommended - don't know if it is a keeper for most readers, but it is worth reading.

3 out of 5 stars Great premise, but story lacking substance!.......2004-10-25

I started out reading this book and was near tears with the first contact Samanta Bretton and Nick Kincaid had had in 13 years. I thought there would be more angst from their daughter, Jessica, but she attached too quickly to a mother and grandparents that she knows abandoned her.

If the writer wanted me to undestand this quick attachment to her mother, then she should have showed us Jessica not feeling as though her father understood what it was like to be a young girl. As it stand, Nick was the perfect father so why did Jessica need her mother?

I think this story could have been so much better had Rebecca Winters had Jessica dealing with a menstrual cycle or not knowing how to cook or how to do her own hair or having a boyfriend and not knowing how to act around one or SOMETHING that young girls go through that they need their mothers for.

And in this story there was already a woman in Jessica's life who was a great substitue for a mother, and Jessica was really close to her, so again, why was I supposed to care Jessica's mother who abandoned her as an infant contacted her after finding out her cancer was in remission?

Nick was too sappy of a hero in this story for me as well. I didn't get enough angst from him over Jessica's mother choosing singlehood over motherhood.

The story started out with so much potential and turned dull towards the middle of the book. I didn't care if Nick got back together with Samantha. What Samantha did and why was lame, selfish, and not deserving of forgiveness.

This book had every cliche thing in it, also. Too sappy. Not enough characterization from the characters. And a storyline that didn't flesh out properly.

Nick and Samantha didn't have nearly enough chemistry to keep me interested. I skipped ahead to the ending after reading over 200 pages.

I gave it 3 stars only because I enjoyed the beginning but expected more in the end.

If you're into too happy romance novels, then this is the perfect book for you. If you're into well fleshed out characterization, then don't bother. I didn't seem to care about any of these characters toward the end of the book. Something was lacking, I'm just not sure what.

4 out of 5 stars delightful second chance at love .......2004-10-13

Colorado State University students Nick Kincaid and Samantha Bretton fall in love. When she becomes pregnant, he offers to marry her, but her parents especially her mother pressure the seventeen years old into refusing. She gives birth, but is heartbroken and unable to look at their child. Nick assumes she is just selfish.

Thirteen years later in Idaho, Sam learns her cancer is in remission. She needs to see her daughter and sends a pleading letter to Nick who raised Jessica by himself. Jessica calls her birth mother to invite her to come see her in Grand Teton National park where she lives. Though afraid, Sam agrees to come, but fears how Nick will act towards her while knowing that her only regret in life was not marrying him when he proposed when she was a teen.

The return to Grand Teton (see WOMAN IN HIDING) is a fine affair as readers will feel the high level of angst between Sam and Nick while worrying how their relationship will impact in the way too precocious Jess. The story line is loaded with tension as their past, present, and future converges within Sam. I was really surprised to find out the heroine has been battling cancer. The twist in this story is remarkable. Having given up her baby at 17, she never expects to see the child. But because she's a cancer survivor, she's advised to resolve any problem in her past that has brought her stess in the hope that she will stay in remission. The hero kept their baby to raise. Now Jessica is 13 and he has just received a phone call from her mother. She wants to see Jessica, if it's okay with him. Wow. The story takes off from there. I laughed and cried all the way through it. A keeper if there ever was one.
