4 out of 5 stars First of a Good Mystery Series.......2006-11-04

This is the first book of a well done mystery series set in the late Middle Ages in England. Dame Frevisse, the sleuth and center of these tales, is an older nun in a small community. Author Frazer includes a lot of rich detail from the time period and creates some very interesting and life-like characters. This first story is one of the better ones in the series, but I have not found a bad one yet. If you like medieval mysteries, this is a series not to be missed. However, if the genre is not your favorite, I'd recommend starting with another series like the Fidelma series by Peter Tremayne.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable introduction.......2006-03-09

An easy reading but still tantalising murder mystery set in the fifteenth century in a convent. Well rounded characters that you could care about and believe in. I look forward to trying more in the series.

5 out of 5 stars A novel that depicts medieval nuns as people!.......2005-09-07

In 1431, the convent of St. Frideswide's peaceful English September is disrupted by the arrival of a familiar but less-than-welcome guest. Lady Ermentrude, great aunt to the saintly novice Thomasine, always enjoys tormenting the timid girl by threatening to find her a husband before Thomasine can take her final vows. This time she's just two weeks away from that great moment. So when Ermentraude dies of poisoning in St. Fridewide's guest hall, after a hard and hasty ride on some mysterious family business, Thomasine - unlikely murderess though she might make - is nevertheless everyone's prime suspect.

Everyone's, that is, except Sister Frevisse. Although she has to admit that Thomasine does look guilty, the convent's hosteler looks elsewhere instead of accepting the too-easy answer (in contrast to the "crowner" who investigates on the King's behalf, and the rest of Lady Ermentrude's family).

I seldom read mysteries. I picked this one up because of its setting in time and place, hoping for a few hours of amusement; and author Frazer delivered that in spades. Sister Frevisse, a mixture of involuntarily learned worldliness and devotion to the godly, contemplative life that's her choice, is a thoroughly original character. So, in their different ways, are the tale's other major players. What pleased me most, though, was the simple joy of reading a novel that depicts medieval nuns as people. That by itself would have been more than worth the read.

It was easy to forget among the quiet patterns of St. Frideswide's that its nuns were the daughters, granddaughters, sisters of men who held their inheritance by right of arms and battle skills. As nuns and women their daily life held little need for their inheritance of courage, but their blood remembered.

Yes! Exactly!

4 out of 5 stars Mystery galore.......2004-03-09

Thomasine is a timid "holy" novice. All the sisters believe her to be saintly. She wiles away her time waiting impatiently for the time she could become a full fledge nun. Thomasine's world is turned upside down when her aunt arrives unexpectedly. Thomasine dreads this visit, in which her aunt makes a point in teasing Thomasine mercilessly by threatening to take her out of the nunnery and married to a lustly fellow--something Thomasine is deathly in fear of. After only a few days after arrival, her aunt becomes ill and then dies. Unfortunately, she's poisoned and Thomasine is the number one suspect. Its then up to Sister Frevisse to solve the mystery and find out who did the horrible deed.

This is an interesting mystery. I gave it only four stars because I guessed who did it immediately, although I didn't know why. It was worth reading to find out why.

5 out of 5 stars Introducing Dame Frevisse, Benedictine nun.......2002-12-09

Thomasine D'Evers, a frail 17-year-old, has wanted only the cloister since she was eight years old, driven mostly by intense piety - but partly from fear of the childbirth that killed her mother, and shyness intensified by the isolation of many childhood illnesses. This September of 1431, when Thomasine's final vows will be pronounced at Michaelmas (September 29th), her great-aunt, Lady Ermentrude Fenner, has arrived to pay an unannounced visit.

Lady Ermentrude likes to drop in on the priory's guesthall without warning and *with* a large following of servants, men-at-arms, and obnoxious pets. ("'A monkey,' Domina Edith repeated, sounding as if she had been given a second hundred years in Purgatory.") Since one of Ermentrude's favourite pasttimes is arranging family marriages for fun and profit, every visit is accompanied by rude, half-teasing offers to take Thomasine away and arrange a marriage for her with a vigorous young husband (or an older rich one, whichever strikes her fancy). (Robert Fenner, the one young man who seems to admire Thomasine for herself, has sense enough to hold his tongue rather than let the pushy old lady make things worse - for one thing, he knows he's not a good enough match.)

On this visit, Ermentrude arrived when Thomas Chaucer was visiting his niece, Dame Frevisse. The current events discussion of the war in France - the Hundred Years' War - is interesting; Henry VI is still a little boy. After meeting with the prioress, Dame Frevisse (who's in charge of the guesthall), and Master Chaucer, Ermentrude leaves the bulk of her retinue to settle in while she dashes off for a quick visit to Thomasine's married sister Isobel. But Ermentrude returns the next day in a frenzy, swearing that Thomasine shan't be forced to take vows, and that she 'has a good husband coming to her after this' - and that she's taking her away from this horrible place at once. She's been nearly raving all day, as Isobel and Sir John, arriving hard on her heels, can attest.

Within a few hours, Lady Ermentrude is dead of poison, together with a kitchen servant who sampled one dish too many.

Far too many people had opportunity, and with Lady Ermentrude, there's not far to look for motive. Lady Ermentrude had recently left Queen Katherine's service, dropping broad hints of impending scandal - did someone take steps to shut her mouth? Dame Alys, cellarer and chief cook, comes of a family embroiled in a feud with the Fenners, and could be counted on *not* to use new bread for the lady's milksop, but that which could have been tampered with. The lady's servants led a hard life - did something become too much for one of them? Worst of all, of course, Thomasine brought the milksop meant to soothe Lady Ermentrude's throat.

Master Montfort, the local 'crowner' (coroner) of northern Oxfordshire at this point in the series, is intensely irritating; he'll bend over backward for an easy explanation. ('Easy' in this case is the quickest resolution that'll let Lady Ermentrude's son Walter return to his rich uncle's deathbed.) Montfort's also a pig; he badmouths any information from any of the sisters, especially Frevisse, who he thinks gets above herself. It galls him that the sisters are under Church jurisdiction rather than his own.

Frevisse, with her cleverness and the worldly experience of much travel on pilgrimage in her youth, is left to save Thomasine by figuring out what happened. (However, the expertise and intelligence is distributed among the sisters - for instance, Domina Edith, the prioress, is the first to realize what they'll have to cope with, and Dame Claire the infirmarian is the medical expert.) After her parents died, Frevisse was raised in her aunt's household, but was far closer to her uncle, Thomas Chaucer - Geoffrey Chaucer's son. Chauncer is an anomaly, a powerful, wealthy commoner who refuses all titles, with a lot of noble and even half-royal relations; through him, Frevisse is well connected.

All the Dame Frevisse stories have titles after the fashion of Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. However, rather than being narrated by the title character as in Chaucer's tales, they're told in limited 3rd person, alternating between the title character and Frevisse. The title character is always a major supporting player in the story, but not necessarily a suspect. The means employed by each murderer vary from story to story, and unlike, say, Ellis Peters' Brother Cadfael mysteries, years go by between events at St. Frideswide's. Set 24 years before the Wars of the Roses began, signs of the approaching turmoil, like tremors before an earthquake, can be seen.

This Benedictine priory differs from Brother Cadfael's abbey, for more reasons than the three centuries separating them. St. Frideswide's holds fewer than a dozen sisters, who are cloistered and who observe the rule of silence. While provided for, the priory isn't particularly wealthy, and since it's only a priory, it must answer to the abbot of another house. Apart from that of the prioress, elderly Domina Edith, the offices are swapped around each quarter, so a sister won't necessarily stay with one job all her life.

          Book Description

The Gothic "Bluebooks" were the hugely popular paperbacks of their time, eagerly sought by uncounted numbers of readers in the Nineteenth Century who could not afford the more decorous three-volume novels favoured by the gentry. Containing sensational tales of lustful monks, terrified females, dashing heroes and a whole variety of supernatural creatures, these one-hundred-page little works bound in blue-coloured paper became notorious as 'Shilling Shockers'-after the price they were sold at-but with repeated handling soon became impossibly rare. In this unique collection some of the best are reprinted, complete with their original illustrations, for all readers who love to thrill to tales of Gothic horror and melodrama.

That is, it usually means those things. But when you're Princess Mia, nothing happens the way it's supposed to. For one thing, Grandmère seems determined to prove that boy (or Michael, as he is commonly known) isn't the right one for the crown princess of Genovia. And Mia isn't having much luck proving otherwise, since Michael has a history of being decidedly against any kind of exploitative commercialization (Valentine's Day, as it is commonly known).

Boris can declare his love openly to Lilly, and even Kenny comes through with a paltry Whitman's Sampler. So why can't Michael give in to Cupid and tell Mia he loves her—preferably with something wrapped in red or pink and accompanied by roses—in time to prove he's Mia's true prince?

4 out of 5 stars Aww. I love those two kids........2007-03-20

An enjoyable, very short book. Does not take long to read at all. Mia as usual is totally insane, though she seems a bit stronger and willing to let some things just happen, than totally freaking out. She is stuck b/c Michael has already declared that he doesn't beleive in the propaganda for Valentine's day, but at the same time Mia really wants to give him one since it is their first one together.

Its funny and the ending is very sweet.

My daughter appreciated this as a Valentine's Day gift and is enjoying the peripheral storyline.

5 out of 5 stars Short and Sweet.......2007-02-27

I really enjoyed this book, it follows the format of the traditional fractional princess diaries. Mia starts freaking when she finds out Michael hates Valentine's Day, complains to us and Tina for a few dozen pages, we get the usual rift between Lilly and Boris. At the end, everyone ends up happy on Valentine's Day, except Lana, who's mentioned in about 2 pages of this book. My one qualm is that Grandmere seems like a rich dotty old lady here, following the advice of an astrologist, rather than the snappy down-to-earth b**** we're all used to. But overall, it was a nice read, and a good way to pass the time waiting for PD IX.

              5 out of 5 stars Valentine Princess.......2007-02-19

I was so happy with this book. It was funny, entertaining, and ultimately a fast read. And I mean really fast... I don't even think this book took me an hour.
Overall, I think all of Meg's Princess Diarie's fans are going to love this book...

5 out of 5 stars A quick, entertaining novel full of Cabot's signature wit.......2007-01-27

Mia is on her way to Genovia when she discovers a time travel ticket (well, actually her old journal) that takes her back to her very first Valentine's Day with Michael. What a find!

The first entry is for February 11th and tells how Mia met her grandmother's astrologist, Dr. Steve. Dr. Steve predicts grave danger plus a marriage proposal for Grandmere while Mia secretly scoffs. Mia doesn't believe it, yet she fears hearing her own forecast. Dr. Steve is insistent on telling it to her anyway. Mia is sure that Dr. Steve's predictions are foolishness; however, she is dismayed to hear him foretell that she will have a caboting relationship with a Leo. Mia screams that he can only be wrong since her beloved Michael is a Capricorn, and even suspects that Grandmere has put Dr. Steve up to his predictions simply because Grandmere doesn't like Michael.

When Mia mentions the forecast to her friend, Tina Hakim Baba, Tina urges Mia to fight for Michael. She's horrified that Mia and Michael have made no Valentine's Day plans and says that Dr. Steve's prediction will come true for sure if Mia doesn't plan the perfect romantic celebration.

When Mia casually brings up the holiday of romance with her best friend Lilly in front of Michael, she's dismayed to hear both of them diss it as a crass commercial ritual that they refuse to take part in. Tina insists that Mia must change Michael's mind about Valentine's Day by making it wonderful for him. The pressure is on, and Mia is in a quandary. How can she give a gift to someone without making it seem like she wants one in return? And how on earth can she give a Valentine's Day present to someone who hates the holiday?

Meanwhile, Grandmere is spending too much time with Dr. Steve. Mia is worried. Is Dr. Steve conning her royal grandmother?

This very quick read is pure enjoyment for Meg Cabot's many fans, with her signature rapid-fire wit and intriguing subplots. And, of course, it's full of heart. What could be more appropriate to the spirit of Valentine's Day?

It would seem that 14-year-old Mia Thermopolis ("five foot nine inches tall, with no visible breasts, feet the size of snowshoes") has the kind of life every Manhattan teenager could only dream of: She is, in her spare time, the princess of the European country of Genovia. Alas, the Royal Privilege is more like a Predicament. Not only does she have to endure daily princess lessons from her critical Grandmère ("It isn't as if I'm going to show up at the castle and start hurling olives at the ladies-in-waiting"), but her new stepfather is also her algebra teacher, her mother is pregnant and vomiting, she doesn't like her boyfriend very much, and she's convinced the real love of her life--her best friend's older brother--thinks of her as a kid.

Written in diary form like Louise Rennison's award-winning Angus, Thongs, and Full-Frontal Snogging, Meg Cabot's endearing and often hilarious novel Princess in Love--third in the series after The Princess Diaries and Princess in the Spotlight--is sure to appeal to teen readers who will be able to relate to Mia--a young woman who would like people to know that "behind this mutant facade beats the heart of a person who is striving, just like everybody else in this world, to find self-actualization." (Ages 12 and older) --Karin Snelson

Princess Amelia Mignonette Grimaldi Thermopolis Renaldo may seem the luckiest girl ever. She's a princess, for starters. She also lives in New York City. And while she's no supermodel, mirrors do not crack at her reflection. Best of all, she finally has a boyfriend. The truth is, however, that Mia spends all her time doing one of three things: preparing for her nerve-racking entrée into Genovian society under the slave-driving but elegant Grandmére, slogging through congestion unique to Manhattan in December, and avoiding further smooches from her hapless boyfriend, Kenny. All she wants is a little peace and quiet...and a certain someone else to be her boyfriend. For Mia, being a princess in love is not the fairy tale it's supposed to be...or is it?

5 out of 5 stars a review from christina, i loved this book!.......2007-05-23

Amelia Mignonette Grimaldi Thermopolis Renaldo, known as Mia for short, has recently been informed that she is the heir to the throne of Genovia. On top of that she has to attend princess lessons, prepare for her trip to Genovia and figure out a way to dump her boyfriend. When Mia starts getting yellow roses and her boyfriend won't ask her to the dance, she suspects something is up.

Princess In Love is an outstanding book. My favorite part is when she had to write the English essay about her Thanksgiving. Meg Cabot is an excellent author and Princess in Love is a great book for girls twelve and older.

Mia Thermopolous is not your typical teenager. She has a strict Grandma, a boyfriend that she really does not love anymore; she likes her best friend Lilly's brother, And she is princess of Genovia a small country in Europe, but she lives in the united states. Mia's life has no plans she pretty much does what her heart and her brain tells her.

Poor Kenny, Mia's first boyfriend tries to win over her love but all she does is push him to the side. Kenny starts to feel like he is not good enough for Mia, so he starts asking her to go on dates with him more often. Lilly had this great idea one day that they should go on a double date but Lilly and her brother would go instead of a couple, that day Kenny started to know that Mia really did not love him like she used to , instead she likes Michael. Will she ever get what she wants?

This is not Mia's favorite year, she finds out that her designer sells her pictures he took of her in her dresses that were made by him. Everyone is disappointed to her that their own princess is a model. Mia does not like the fact people think she is a model. Mia then fires her designer, and now has no dress to wear for the upcoming Genovian Christmas ball. Grandmere is very upset with Mia and Mia decides not to talk to her for a while. Will she find a dress in time? Will ever she talk to Grandmere again?

Find out the answers to all of these questions by reading the Princess Diaries Series book number three.

"That's it, my life is over...I have a boyfriend and I don't even like him!" And so begins the third book in the Princess Diaries series. Mia has finally gotten herself a boyfriend. Kenny, the boy who has been sending Mia anonymous love notes, finally came forward and is now Mia's boyfriend. The only problem is that she is still in love with Michael and doesn't know how to let him know. So Mia has to find a way to let Michael know how she feels, break up with Kenny without hurting his feelings, plan her trip to Genovia, and figure out why Kenny hasn't asked her to the dance. Needless to say, Mia needs some help. Fortunately, her friend Tina is there. She gives Mia the idea to send Michael love notes (without signing her name) and see how he reacts. After sending three notes, Michael lets Mia know that he knows it was her and that he feels the same way. So at the dance Mia becomes Michael's girlfriend and not Kenny's. Now Mia is off to Genovia with her grandmother. Even though she's nervous about talking to the Genovian people on TV, she couldn't be happier. She finally got the guy of her dreams. Princess in Love is a great addition to the Princess Diaries series.

One of the reasons I liked this book is because it was funny to hear Mia talk about her boyfriend problems. Kenny had been her secret admirer for awhile and Mia thought it was sweet. When he came forward and said it was him, she couldn't turn him down. In the previous books Mia has talked about how much she wanted a boyfriend, and now that she has one, she doesn't want him. Mia tries to like him but she doesn't because she's still in love with Lilly's older brother. Mia completely freaks out when Kenny calls and says he loves her. She just said "see you tomorrow" and hangs up. Then she stresses about what to do because she doesn't love him back. Finally her problems are solved when Kenny breaks up with her. Mia is still confused because Kenny thought she was in love with Lilly's boyfriend Boris. Looks like Kenny will never get it right.

As always Mia has her fights with Lilly. The book wouldn't fit with the series if it didn't. One of their fights was during their Gifted and Talented class. Mia was asking Lilly how she should respond to Kenny saying `I love you'. In front of the entire class Lilly says, in a loud voice, `how about that you love him too.' Mia was mortified because she didn't want to admit in front of the entire class that she didn't really like her boyfriend. Mia also gets frustrated with Lilly when Lilly suggests a walk out during school to oppose all the work that the teachers are giving them during exam week. Due to the fact that Mia and Lilly are best friends, Mia is expected to do it even though she doesn't want to. She knows how mad Lilly will be if she doesn't do it, so she gets really confused. So instead of dealing with Lilly, Mia pulls the fire alarm so the school gets evacuated during the walkout. Lilly starts yelling saying that someone told on them as Mia sits back and is thankful Lilly isn't yelling at her.

Mia is a very shy person. In the story she does some things that were very hard for her, but she did it anyway. One incident is when Mia finally stood up to Lana. Lana had always bugged Mia and finally she couldn't take it anymore. She grabbed Lana's cell phone off the desk, dropped it onto the floor, and stepped on it. It was smashed to pieces and Mia was suspended. However, she got many emails from people saying how proud they were of her. Another thing Mia had to do was deal with the pictures of her in different dresses that were put in the newspaper. She was picking out a dress to wear to Genovia and someone took pictures. Mia's grandmother gave them to the newspapers hopping to get good publicity. It made Mia and her dad very angry. So Mia called a news crew and gave a speech saying that all the proceeds from the pictures would go to Greenpeace. Talking in front of the press was very hard for Mia but she knew it was the right thing to do. Also, just sending those letters to Michael must have been really hard for Mia. She had been in love with him for years, and she never thought that he would like her too. So she really took a chance telling him how she felt, even if it was anonymously.

This is a very well written book. It sounds like it could have been written by a real teenager. The simple story line keeps you interested and it has the perfect Cinderella ending. I give it five stars. I would recommend this book to all teenage girls.

4 out of 5 stars Princess In love.......2007-03-02

I read the book Princess In Love. Princess In Love is about a young beautiful princess that visits a small country called Genovia. The princess has a best friend who has a really cute brother that the princess likes a lot. She doesn't tell anyone her feelings about the boy but it turns out that he feels the same about her. They both like each other but they are to scared to tell one another.

A couple of things that I liked about this book was that I just enjoy reading love stories and I also like how the love was kinda of hidden. It would be a really good book for people that like to read books about love and friendship. I would suggest that you not read it if you don't like to read about love.
There is nothing that I did't like. My overall oppinion is that it's a great love story for people that like to read about princesses and love. But if you don't like to read about that kind of stuff. I suggest you not read it. Other than that it's a great and romantic book!

When girls are little they probably want to be a princess, marry a prince and live happily ever after. Well for fourteen year-old Mia Thermopolis this is half true.
When Mia (a freshman) was just starting high school she found out she was princess of Genovia (not a real country but in the book it is located next to France). But now Mia has known that she is a princess for several months. She has a boyfriend named Kenny who she thinks is weird and strange. Her real prince charming is Michael Moscovitz who is her best friend Lilly's brother who is a senior. She has had a major crush on Michael ever since kindergarten when she became friends with Lilly. Mia's love and passion for Michael is burning like the sun. Mia and Michael seem like they are meant to be like eggs and bacon. Will Mia ever go out with her prince charming or will she be stuck with odd Kenny?
This book is the third book in the princess diaries series, and let me just say these are the best books I have ever read. Meg Cabot the author really out does her self this time in this fiction book. I recommend it to teenage girls. Mia can relate to a lot of people. She thinks she "is a 5'9 talent less freak with gigantism". Even if you have seen the movies you should still read them because the books are way better.

5 out of 5 stars The Queens Knight.......2005-08-26

This series is great. The story grabs you in your heart and imagination. The character development is really good and I have found myself dreaming at night coming up with possible scenerios the story is going to take. It just grabs your mind! A totally fantastic , imaginative mystery and romance.

              4 out of 5 stars Fantasy-AWESOME!!! Real World-BLAH!!!.......2005-07-03

This book was great!! I loved the parts where it gets into the fantasy world and when Rieno saves Yuna and kisses her. But there wasn't very much fantasy in this volume, which really sucked, and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the volumes!

4 out of 5 stars Don't Judge it by the first volume .......2005-03-08

Like many first volumes of series, this one comes across as a bit disjointed and may leave you going, "Huh?" Don't stop. The second volume pulls everything together and starts what seems to be a great story. I had to immediately start the third volume, and now I'm dying for more! The first volume is necessary so you know the background and the characters- the second volume is where you get addicted. Give it another volume or two before you give up on the series, you most likely won't regret it.

              3 out of 5 stars Er...what?.......2005-02-09

I...had very little idea of what was going on. The book has an interesting premise to be sure, but I was hoping there would be more fantasy and less real world stuff. Her brothers are amusing, but as stated somewhere else, it's hard to tell one from the other.

4 out of 5 stars Gets better in vol 2.......2005-02-07

Ok, the first volume has terrible dialogue translations. Don't bother to more than skim through it and don't let it fool you! The second volume is MUCH better and the story actually gets interesting, with less time in the real world.

Firstly, I don't know what happened to the dialogue translations in the first volume, but whatever it was they fixed it in the second. It's actually interesting.

Although it originally seemed like the series would take place mostly in the real world, it's now apparent that we are going to be spending most of our time in Phantasma. This is a good thing since there are tons of school oriented stories out there already.

The female lead is starting to show some signs of actual independence which is a nice suprise as early as volume 2. Yes, she's still a self-absorbed slow little brat, but she's getting over it.

Over all, this is an interesting series with promise and a number of volumes before the end. I would recomend all manga/manwah fans take a look at volume 2 before coming to any conclusions.
