Book Description

In Palmerston, Pennsylvania,
two men in long coats walk calmly into a crowded fast food restaurant-then, slowly and methodically, gun down sixty-eight people. They take time to reload.

On the Promenade of Santa Monica, California, a teenaged girl gives sightseeing tips to a distinguished English tourist. She won't be going home tonight.

In Dyersburg, Montana, a grief-stricken son tries to make sense of the accident that killed his parents-then finds a note stuffed in his father's favorite chair. It says, "We're not dead."

Three seemingly unrelated events, these are the first signs of an unimaginable network of fear that will lead one unlikely hero to a chilling confrontation with The Straw Men. No one knows who they are-or why they kill. But they must be stopped. Michael Marshall's electrifying debut novel is an instant masterpiece of modern suspense. An epic thriller for anyone who has feared that someone is watching us.

1 out of 5 stars Remarkably poor writing.......2007-08-14

The plot synopsis sounded diverting enough, a pleasantly ludicrous late-night read. But the opening sentence is an all too characteristic clunker: "Palmerston is not a big town, nor one that can convincingly be said to be at the top of its game." Maybe Marshall should have crammed a few more helping verbs into that subordinate clause, but the bigger error reveals Marshall's biggest weakness: "not" takes "or," not "nor." The man doesn't own a style manual, or doesn't know how to read it if he does. He honestly doesn't know how to compose grammatically correct sentences in English. It gets worse. I stopped reading at the bottom of page three, where this gem appears: "He was familiar with England as a concept, and gathered that it had a whole lot of history and a thriving rock music industry, both of which he was in favor." A preposition was left off the end of that sentence--presumably Marshall doesn't even know what I'm talking about by this point--and even the copy editor was too bored to notice. The sentence should end "both of which he was in favor OF." This mistake is the obverse of the more common redundant preposition; in this instance, Marshall seems to have believed that the initial "of" could do double duty, but in fact "in favor of" is a separate prepositional phrase from "both of which," & requires, duh, a separate preposition, as can easily be seen if the sentence is rephrased: "He was in favor OF both OF them." Probably Marshall believes what Bryan Gardner calls "the spurious rule about not ending sentences with prepositions." (This is belabored, but I see from the comments field that many people still haven't mastered the basics of composition. The point is that the above errors (& they're by no means aberrations) are rudimentary: anyone who's passed Comp 101 should have no trouble avoiding them.)

I hate to imagine the narrowness of experience, the sheer ignorance of literature, that could lead a person to judge this novel "remarkably well written," with "prose of astonishingly high quality," as one reviewer astoundingly has it. I can think of at least ten thriller writers off the top of my head who would never have committed the lax solecisms that fill this turgid specimen of heavy breathing. I see some used copies are selling for a penny; what a rip-off.

3 out of 5 stars Too Convoluted.......2007-08-05

Michael Marshall's "The Straw Men" has some interesting elements but as a whole is not as captivating as one would hope from a mainstream thriller. It does not know if it is a plot driven thrill ride or an exploration of what people are capable of doing to each other.

The novel tracks two different story lines that converge about ¾ through the book and then ride together to deliver the climax. Ward Hopkins, estranged from his family comes to Montana to clean up the estate of his parents who have been killed in a car crash. But are they really dead? At the same time a serial killer, The Upright Man, re-appears after dormancy and is tracked by an ex CIA agent Zandt and his ex-partner Nina.

The book begins promising, and Michael Marshall has some keen observations on the evolution of evil in society and the unpredictability of individuals. The main theme is the old cliché that you never know what is in an individual's heart and the cruelty humans are capable of to fulfill selfish desires. "They came in all shapes, sizes, and types. Some were monstrous, others were fairly decent individuals - aside, that is, from the propensity to kill other people and ruin the lives of those who had loved them".

The problem is that Marshall's observations, however insightful, are delivered within a few sentences and then not built upon. I would have been much more interested if one of these observations were explored deeper. Instead you are left with a few thought provoking ideas inserted into a story that is more concerned with moving a convoluted plot forward. Unfortunately the plot is not at all convincing. There are a lot of plot conveniences and the revelations are a bit ridiculous

The Straw Men certainly has elements that prove Michael Marshall is (or is developing into) a decent author with a very nice writing style. However, the novel is tedious and not very believable, even as you suspend your disbelief and try to enjoy the ride.

5 out of 5 stars This Book is Remarkably Well Written.......2007-02-14

I picked STRAW MEN up on a lark, and I'm glad I did. This is a "thinking man's" thriller, with prose of astonishingly high quality.

I agree with one of the prior reviewers that there are many sentences in this novel that you re-read, simply to enjoy the high caliber of the writing. Marshall is a very philosophical type of writer, and his prose offers many insightful ruminations about the nature of life, aging, and other deep subjects. This is the type of book where the author will stop the story to spend a few pages making some social observations. I found much of them to be funny and enjoyable -- perhaps the best aspect of the book.

That being said, the plotting in STRAW MEN could have been a little better. This is a relatively slow paced book, burdened by excessive description and commentary by the author. If you're looking for a scary thriller with lots of action, this probably won't satisfy you. This is more of an atmospheric thriller, where the story takes a back seat to the writing itself. It is ultimately a very literary sort of book.

Still, STRAW MEN is highly enjoyable for what it is. Also, just for the record, this is not a "debut" novel, but is a novel written under a pseudonym by Michael Marshall Smith, who has written several bestselling science fiction novels in Great Britain. Regardless of this fact, this book is a terrific read and I heartily recommend it for fans of good writing.

4 out of 5 stars good mystery.......2006-10-12

Wow, this is a pretty weird book. Nothing too sick, but just enough character development to keep you interested. I liked how it tried to bring a real world sense to it and never really goes too far.

The book doesn't live up to being really scary but that doesn't mean it isn't good.

5 out of 5 stars This book has it all!.......2006-06-01

Wow!! I am not sure where to start. This book has a little of everything: suspense, drama, humor, horror, you name it, you can probably find it somewhere within its' 389 pages. This is the type of book that truly grabs you and holds on tight, long after the last page is turned.

I don't want to spoil anything for you and you are capable of reading the back of the book yourself, but let me take a moment to say that Marshall has written as close to a perfect work of fiction as I have ever read. The characters are alive, warm, wonderful, hateful, believable... all that AND a bag of chips!!

There is more than one plot taking place here, Ward is trying to make sense of his parents death, which is further complicated by a note and some video he stumbles upon in their home. A young girl is kidnapped right off a busy street and held hostage in a most horrible fashion, and somehow, all of this is related.

Buy this book, borrow this book, steal this book.....just whatever you do, READ this book. You won't be disappointed. There is a sequel to this book that I have already purchased!!

      Book Description

This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a “borderless world”, cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market. In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another. In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world\'s major cities for "men\'s and boys\' straw hats" for the year 2007. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. Consider, however, the category "satellite launch vehicles". Clearly, there are no launch pads in most cities of the world. However, the core benefit of the vehicles (e.g. telecommunications, etc.) is "consumed" by residents or industries within the world\'s cities. Without certain cities, in other words, the market for satellite launch vehicles would be lower for the world in general. One needs to allocate, therefore, a portion of the worldwide economic demand for launch vehicles to both regions and cities. This report takes the broader definition and considers, therefore, a city as a part of the global market.

        Book Description

This study covers the latent demand outlook for men’s and boys’ straw hats across the states, union territories and cities of India. Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 2,100 cities in India. For each city in question, the percent share the city is of it’s state or union territory and of India as a whole is reported. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city vis-à-vis others. This statistical approach can prove very useful to distribution and/or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each state or union territory and city, latent demand estimates are created for men’s and boys’ straw hats. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

                Book Description

This study covers the latent demand outlook for men’s and boys’ straw hats across the regions of Greater China, including provinces, autonomous regions (Guangxi, Nei Mongol, Ningxia, Xinjiang, Xizang - Tibet), municipalities (Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, and Tianjin), special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau), and Taiwan (all hereafter referred to as “regions”). Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,100 cities in Greater China. For each major city in question, the percent share the city is of the region and of Greater China is reported. Each major city is defined as an area of “economic population”, as opposed to the demographic population within a legal geographic boundary. For many cities, the economic population is much larger that the population within the city limits; this is especially true for the cities of the Western regions. For the coastal regions, cities which are close to other major cities or which represent, by themselves, a high percent of the regional population, actual city-level population is closer to the economic population (e.g. in Beijing). Based on this “economic” definition of population, comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city’s marketing and distribution value vis-à-vis others. This exercise is quite useful for persons setting up distribution centers or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each region and city of influence, latent demand estimates are created for men’s and boys’ straw hats. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

2 out of 5 stars Promise unfulfilled. .......2006-04-23

When I read and reviewed Ring of Lightning (the first book in the Dance of the Rings) I wrote that it was flawed, but had a great deal of promise. I liked the interactions with the brothers and thought that there was a good set-up to an intriguing new fantasy world. I had a lot of hope that Fancher would outgrow the flaws in the first book and turn in a spectacular second series entry.

Unfortunately, Ring of Intrigue does not even live up to the flawed standard of Ring of Lightning. The interaction between the brothers, which was a lot of what was good about Ring of Lightning, turned into melodramatic mush in Ring of Intrigue. If a character said, "Dammit, Khyel!" (or its equivalent) one more time I was going to hurl the book out the window. Although the plot was interesting and again promising, it was so long and drawn-out that I forgot quite a few bits by the time that I got towards the end of the book. There is also something about the pacing that was not quite right. There are huge parts of the prose spent on small moments while major plot elements can be missed if you blink.

Unfortunately, I would not recommend this book. I would particularly not recommend it if you were as lukewarm about Ring of Lightning as I was. If you found the first book perfect, then this may well be more your cup of tea than it was mine. If I find the third used, I may well give it a try. My hopes won't be very high, however.

5 out of 5 stars The Tale of Three Brothers.......2003-08-27

The story of the newly telepathic-linked brothers continue in the midst of disasters in form of a city's infrastructure breakdown and political coups. The reconciled brothers struggle to find balance between the sharing of thoughts and emotions and walled privacies. As in Ring of Lightning, this book is in a heavy perspective 3rd person type of narration, opinions of the characters and the readers can change in a heartbeat depending upon the ruling emotion of the moment. In one sense this can be an exhausting book to read since the characters' emotion and thought process are very much in the present. Has this type of narration been in a hand of a less competent writer I think I would have lost patience and been disgusted with the story i.e. Mikhyel's casual admittance that he would had entered into an incesteous relationship if that is what it would take to keep Deymorin in his life. I think Fancher has a serious affinity for really messed up people. But what is admirable about Mikhyel is he never wants pity from others and continues to serve the needs of the city and his brothers before his own. Fancher knows how to weave a tight spell upon a reader new to this type of writing style and while it is fascinating and addictive, I'm glad most books are not like this for it would be exhausting.

                    2 out of 5 stars A disappointing sequel.......2000-10-29

This book could have been a lot better. Its predecessor was an OK fantasy book, and I expected at least as much from this one. Unfortunately Ring of Intrigue doesn't live up even to its mediocre promise and ends up being rather annoying and dull.

Mikheyel is the central point of the book and its best part. His emotional tangles are the most interesting portion of the tale and we are drawn into the book, if only at brief times. Plotlines from the first book are left hanging. Instead the book gives us pages of Khoratum dancers who want to dance again (please!), rulers making idiotically simple plots, etc. Its all played out and dull.

If the rest of the series is going to be this lackluster, I wouldn't advise anyone to pick it up. Let's hope that the final volume does better with these themes and improves on both the mediocre first and the disappointing second.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful blending of magic, romance, and impending war........2000-04-11

A month after the destruction at Boreton Turnout, the Rhomandi brothers Deymorin, Mikhyel, and Nikaenour along with Deymorin's companion, Kiyrstin, return to Rhomatum only to be immediately arrested on entering the city. It is feared that they might be impostors wanting to make mischief now that the Ley-web has become damaged, or that the real brothers have returned with the machine that can harness lightning and so cause even more damage. A night passes, and Nikaenour, upon his release, demands that his wife, Lidye, have the others set free, too. Mostly, the arrests have been a nuisance, but Mikhyel has fallen victim to the prisoner Ganfrion, who forces him to perform sexual acts and which Ganfrion uses to blackmail Mikhyel into promising future favours.

The brothers discover that Anheliaa, the ringmaster, is slowly dying. And the city council are demanding an explanation regarding the state of the Ley-web, and what is intended to be done about it. Mikhyel and Kiyrstin set the council's immediate fears to rest. But it falls to Mikhyel and Deymorin to attend to the outer nodes' confidence in the Rhomandi, and rally the troops in case of attack from their old adversary the Mauritumin, and their Northern Crescent allies.

Like its predecessor, Ring of lightning, this book concerns itself ( even more so now that the number of direct associations have increased), with how the principal characters see themselves in relation to one another and the outside world; human, and non-human; politically, familially, and magically. This makes for an interesting mix of romance, and vested interests, which I found to be gritty, subtle in its development of plot line, and at times, appropriately humorous. So anyone who likes their fantasy more involving than usual, should find this book, along with its stablemates, good reading.

5 out of 5 stars Delving into darkness with Intrigue.......1999-03-15

The title does not belie the content; this book is full of nasty plots, less-than-polite deals, and heart-wrenching compromises by more than one character. It's very refreshing to see a fantasy novel not only get outside the standard (and tired) formula, but bring the reader characters who are very memorable (and human). The not-so-human characters have interesting powers, but they aren't all-powerful and they even have "power failures" at inopportune (for the humans) moments. This is _not_ the usual medieval fantasy setting, and it definitely doesn't have the usual medieval fantasy feel to it. That may make certain fantasy readers cringe; if so, I suggest they go find something else. Flexibility of mind is required here, and if one is willing, the journey can be extraordinary!

                    Book Description

At Stalin's orders two teams of scientists and engineers competed to demonstrate the Soviet Union's first atomic bomb. Failure was not an option, and the loosing team was purged with no warning. Its records destroyed, and all of the key personnel eliminated, well, almost all. What happened to the team's work in progress? Forty years later The Group discovers the answer. The Rings of Allah is a grand saga in the genre of James Clavell's Shogun and Tia-Pan, with a little Clancy thrown in. Spanning over sixty years the story sweeps across Russia, central Asia, and into the United States. The cast of characters include Soviet scientists, radical Islamist, KGB officers, al-Qaeda terrorists, Usama bin Laden, and American businessmen, doctors, and government officials. Islam, Wahhabism, and the Soviet-Afghan war, provide the backdrop for the birth of al-Qaeda. The story proceeds into the future where a sleeper cell of al-Qaeda attempts to complete Usama bin Laden's master plan for the final strike against the Great Satan. This epic novel presents a realistic and frightening picture of how simple atomic weapons could be smuggled into and hidden in the U.S. The author has the background and knowledge to write a realistic, technically sound story that will leave no doubt as to the vulnerability of western civilization to terrorism and the threat of weapons of mass destruction. Yes, it can be done, and the Rings of Allah provides a thrilling and realistic story of one such plan. The main characters include an old but sharp Soviet nuclear weapons engineer; an idealistic young American Arab drawn into the Afghanistan Jihad who later becomes a conflicted soul; the American educated al-Qaeda cell leader who slowly slips into insanity; a beautiful blond venture capitalists, who is unwittingly ensnarled into the terrorist plot; an enterprising KGB officer and member of The Group; and

Author Lee Boyland puts his extensive special weapons background to use in spinning this completely believable tale of al-Qaeda's next step after 9-11. Leftover Soviet technology from the beginning of the Cold War falls into al-Qaeda's hands, and they establish an intricate network in order to place five atomic devices in five US cities. The US gets word of the attack, but will it be in time?
Boyland does a great job of mixing good character development with great technical background in order to create this story. Technical readers will appreciate his attention to detail as he relates and educates the reader on the workings of gun-type atomic weapons. Literature advocates will respect how he uses significant events to develop his main characters. Many new writers fall into the trap of trying to tell too much of the story, but Boyland avoids this by jumping sometimes a year ahead in the story in order to keep things moving.
A great action story that is just a bit too possible, this is definitely worth it for action and techo fans alike.

                    5 out of 5 stars A Frightening Scenario.......2007-07-25

Not many people could write this book, but Lee Boyland's background and in-depth knowledge of nuclear physics enables him to lay it out in terms that are as easy to understand as they are frightening. In addition to spelling out how a nuclear attack could be done from a technical standpoint, the author takes us into the minds of Muslim extremists who are intent on destroying modern civilization and taking humanity back to the seventh century.

A believable plot, fascinating characters, and suspenseful writing combine to make THE RINGS OF ALLAH a must read for everyone, but especially for those who believe a terrorist nuclear threat in America is overblown. Such an attack won't be easy to pull off, but the author clearly shows that it can be done, and that we need to be ever vigilant. To paraphrase Secretary of State Rice, "The terrorists can make many mistakes. We just have to make one." Highly recommended.

In "Rings of Allah," Mr. Boyland blends real weapons knowledge with sharply drawn characters through a compelling story that shows true Islamic objectives for destroying our country. It is clear, after reading this, that we are in the fight of our history. Those in the U.S.A. who do not believe that there is an in-house massive propaganda campaign being waged by Islamic extremists need to read this book. "The Rings of Allah" is a fascinating in-depth look into the world of radical Islamic terrorism. The technical knowledge of the author comes through in the minute detail of weapon systems and their use. The book, written in a chronological sequence of the development of the nuclear industry, gives the reader a detailed background of what we are faced with in the future. The plot was believable and the characters realistic as their lives were woven together in a tapestry of intrigue and human drama that pitted the beliefs of radical Islamic terrorists against mainstream American democratic values. The story keeps the reader connected to the real-life events as they unfold in a suspenseful battle to save America from nuclear holocaust. Even though this is a fictional plot, it is a must-read for those who are interested in what we are faced with from the radical terorists because it can evolve into a morbid reality. The ending is spell-binding and unpredictable, and will leave the reader with an unspoken sense of what can happen in our country if we don't take action.

This novel is a thriller with unusual depth. It gives me a chilling glimpse into the world of military style justice, tainted by racism and ruthlessness, as seen from the perspective of a struggling, low-ranking sailor, a legal clerk, reluctantly involved in his superior's commitment to justice.

3 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable Read.......2002-01-21

I enjoyed this book. It is a slim volume and a fast read. The pace is moderate to fast. I do not read a lot of fiction, but it reminds me of the hardboiled detective stories of the 1930's, but without the detective. The nexus is the peculiar sub-culture of the Navy. Rogers sets his story in the rather unpleasant underbelly of this sub-culture. This environment is lightly but effectively sketched. The characterizations are brief but ample.

1 out of 5 stars Too many flaws.......2001-12-14

Don't be tempted by the title, or the subject matter. If you like military stuff and stuff about justice, buy almost anything else. This book is poorly written. I can put up with a lot, but just couldn't make myself get past the first couple of chapters of this. It is poorly edited as well, with typos and incomplete sentences all over the place. Save yourself. Go get some Luscian Truscott IV instead.

                                  Onward.
