Book Description

Better Off Dead

Successful Hollywood movie producer Wolf Willett is stunned when he happens to read his own New York Times obituary--victim of a sordid triple homicide amid a steamy mÉage À trois with his young bride and best friend. Who's the corpse? Who wants him dead? And why has Wolf blacked out the entire evening of the grisly crime?

Unfortunatly, the Santa Fe D.A. thinks Wolf has all the answers. With the means, the motive and an inexplicable memory loss, he is promptly arrested--star suspect in a murder case that's making headlines from coast to coast. Then another murder complicates the scenario. With help from hot shot criminal attorney Ed Eagle and with New Mexico's death penalty as an incentive, Wolf races to clear his name--and dodge the real killer--in this thrilling novel of mazes, mystery and murder.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars TALES FOR A JEWISH INDIAN.......2005-01-26

One of the strangest nuances of this book is Ed Eagle, who everyone seems to think is a Native American, but as we learn later, he is really a Jew and was accepted as an Indian because of his basketball prowess. Okay, Mr. Woods, that's original. Too bad the rest of the novel isn't quite so fresh; but indeed SANTA FE RULES manages to weave an involving, if somewhat hard to believe tale.
Anyone who's read a great deal of mystery novels will see the truth in this novel very early on. Woods does manage to throw in a neat twist at the end, but it only enhances what an astute reader will have already figured out.
Woods writes like a screenwriter; much of his narrative would transfer well to the big screen. A little faster pacing would have enhanced the book as well. But if you're in the mood for a superflous but highly entertaining read, SANTA FE RULES delivers.

5 out of 5 stars A Pageturner for sure!.......2001-07-05

I brought this book along with me to read during an originally short plane trip. I started reading it on the way home and after two planes and a 5 hour delay in the middle, I easily finished this book in one day. This was a great book to have with me because it was really a page turner and helped to quickly pass the time. One thing I think Stuart Woods does well is put several twists into his books which made me look up and say "No way!" throughout this book.

The main character is Wolf Willet who we get to know in the start as a guy who likes his routine and has made a large amount of money in the entertainment business. In the beginning he flies from Sante Fe on his way to LA and has plane troubles and lands near the Grand Canyon. He reads the NY Times headline which says that his wife, his best friend, and him are found shot dead at his home in a guest bedroom. Through the entire rest of the book, Wolf continues to find out who the killer and the dead people really are. You are introduced to many characters who you consistently question...who do you really trust?

This was a great mystery by Stuart Woods and I would definately recommend it to anyone!

2 out of 5 stars Oh Come On.......2000-09-29

Very disappointing. Stuart Woods can be very good. That's why I read him. Chiefs, Grass Roots, and Run Before the Wind were excellent. Other books have not been so wonderful and this was one of them. I kept finding myself saying, "Oh come on" way too many times during this book. Wolf doesn't seem to have a conscience, and I found it hard to find any redeeming qualities in him. This book was just too slick, and the characters way too shallow. Your wife is just killed, so you fly off to L.A. to finish a script? You start an affair? What's missing from this picture?

4 out of 5 stars A South-Western Success!.......2000-07-27

This is one of my favorite Stuart Woods' novels. I found it at a local used bookstore and decided to try it. This was my second novel by Stuart Woods and I feel, one of his best. Mr. Woods studied and described the atmosphere and terrain of the south-west in great detail, which was enjoyable. Another winner for Stuart Woods.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!!!.......2000-07-11

I started this book in school during required reading time in English, by the end of the day i had finished the book. Woods keeps you on your toes the whole time while leaving you wanting to find out what happens next. Reading this book was some of the most enjoyable reading I have had. I cannot recommend this book enough to people.

Book Description

Santa Fe Rules: When successful Hollywood producer Wolf Willett reads in The New York Times of his own murder back home in Santa Fe, he wonders how the murderer will react to this obvious case of mistaken identity. Home again, Wolf is immediately pegged as the chief suspect and, with everything at stake, hires the best criminal defense attorney in the Southwest. With his life and career in shambles, Wolf sets out to find the truth . . . but will time run out before he can puzzle his way through an elaborate web of intrigue and identify a killer who doesn't play by Santa Fe rules?

Heat: Jesse Warden is at the end of his rope. Imprisoned for the wrong crime, he spends half his time in solitary confinement and the other half fighting for his life because he once was a cop. Then a covert federal agency offers him a chance to get out, for a price. To gain his freedom, he must infiltrate a dangerous and reclusive religious cult in the mountains of the Idaho panhandle, a mission which turns out to be a great deal more perilous than his stay in prison.

Winner of the 1989 Newbery Award, Joyful Noise is a children's book of poetry about insects that was designed for two readers to enjoy together. On each page are two columns of verse for children to alternate reading aloud about the lives of six-legged creatures ranging from fireflies writing in the sky to a love affair between two lice, crickets eating pie crumbs and the single day in the life of a mayfly. Charming large scale soft-pencil illustrations enhance the comical, easy-to-read text.

                  Book Description

Written to be read aloud by two voices -- sometimes alternating, sometimes simultaneous -- here is a collection of irresistible poems that celebrate the insect world, from the short life of the mayfly to the love song of the book louse. Funny, sad, loud, and quiet, each of these poems resounds with a booming, boisterous, joyful noise.

In this remarkable volume of poetry for two voices, a companion to I Am Phoenix,Paul Fleischman verbally re-creates the "Booming/boisterios/joyful noise" of insects. The poems resound with the pulse of the cicada and the drone of the honeybee. Eric Beddows's vibrant drawings send each insect soaring, spinning, or creeping off the page in its own unique way.

Paul Fleischman has created not only a clear and fascinating guide to the insect world -- from chrysalid butterflies to whirligig beetles -- but an exultant celebration of life.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Poetry Exposure in the Classroom.......2007-08-03

"Joyful Noise: Poems for Two Voices" can be enjoyed by anyone who has an interest in poetry, but I believe it will be a wonderful classroom resource. Literature involves not only novels, but also poetry." Joyful Noise" can be read by the entire class, allowing everyone to participate. The verses can be challenging (and the vocabulary is suited for older students), but it is fun and entertaining to attempt to read them correctly. "Joyful Noise" can also be used across the curriculum. The poems are about insects (I especially love the poem 'Fireflies'), and they would be ideal for integration into science lessons, with children researching an insect from the book. Students could do art after reading one of these poems, creating pictures to describe what they've read. Writing skills could be built by allowing students to create their own poems for two voices. Vocabulary could be strengthened by, as a class, looking up the more difficult words and clarifiying everyone's understanding. All in all, this is a very special book, whether it's kept for personal enjoyment or is shared with children!

5 out of 5 stars Truly is a "Joyful Noise".......2007-07-05

I'm a sixth grade teacher, and I have Poetry Cafe in my classroom every other weekend during the school year. Joyful Noise is a favorite of the kids in my class every year. It is always the poetry book the kids go for first when they are picking their poems for the week. They love the challenge of reading the poems fluently while still staying "on beat". The poems are beautifully written with rich vocabulary. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Create life-long memories with your children or grandchildren.......2006-09-04

Mesmorizing & magical. These poems are fun to read with kids ... for both kid and adult ... because the interplay of sounds is magical. And for the adults, there is deeper meaning to savor and be mesmorized by for long after the last page is turned. I read these with my kids over a decade ago, Just re-found the book and read them again with them a decade later and they smiled ear to ear at the memory of reading it together so long ago, and loved doing it again, but this time at a deeper level.

4 out of 5 stars Great poetry to read with a friend!.......2006-06-15

I like this book because it's a fun way to learn about insects. You can also read it with a friend. My favorite part about the book was the poem called Water Boatman. It's m favorite because it was very funny. I also liked the one called Honeybees because you got to use two different personalities. The queen bee had a wonderful life and the worker bee has a hard life and hates being a bee. I would recommend this book to my teachers as a learning book about poetry and insects.

                  3 out of 5 stars Don't Read Alone.......2006-02-24

Don't pick this book of poetry up unless you are with someone else who wants to read it too. This book is meant to be read aloud by two people at the same time, if you try reading it silently it gets very boring. If you are into performance and like to practice reading things aloud, then this book is great. As a future school teacher I have seen a lot of possibilities come from this book. Some struggling reader could be motivated to practice quite a bit by this book if they have a partner to read with (parent, classmate, friend, etc.), but it is not at all entertaining to read in any other way than with "two voices."

Most people think they know what happens to this young unfortunate girl. Most people are wrong. Tony-award winning actress Bebe Neuwirth (Chicago, Sweet Charity, and TV's Cheers) stars as a wise Queen who wants nothing more than to reign over her kingdom peacefully but is forced to match wits with an inhuman child who has an unnatural taste for blood.

Raguel, Angel of Vengeance, is mandated by Lucifer to discover both motive and murderer in this holy dominion that had so recently known no sin.

I have listened to these over and over and get more out of them each time. Neil Gaiman is a brilliant writer and the actors in these audio plays are incredible. This is art of the highest order.

4 out of 5 stars Two tellings of disturbing (and enjoyable) tales..........2004-07-12

Two very disturbing stories from Neil Gaiman, this was a duet of short plays adapted for "Seeing Ear Theatre" and read by Bebe Neuwirth ("Snow Glass Apples") and Brian Dennehy ("Murder Mystery.")

"Snow Glass Apples" was a re-telling of Snow White with a ghastly vampiric twist, and from the voice of the Queen, who is anything but the Disnified villainess we've come to know and loathe. Snow White is herself a disturbing figure, and all in all, this was a very enjoyable re-telling of a classic, if a tad gruesome in its telling and conclusion.

"Murder Mystery" I found quite wonderful - it is a tale that includes the investigation of the first murder ever - an angel has been killed, and another angel is called to investigate. The B-plot story, however, just plain didn't make sense.

If I had to break them into two parts, "Snow Glass Apples" would get a '5' and "Murder Mystery" would get a '3.' Hence the '4.'

5 out of 5 stars Seeing Ear Theatre.......2003-02-03

Two Plays For Voices is part of the Seeing Ear Theatre Productions from the Sci-Fi Channel. More television stations should follow their lead. These two stories told in the form of radio plays are terrific! I am a big fan of Neil Gaiman and this format brings two incredible stories to life.

Murder Mysteries is expertly presented and the twist at the end is a surprise to say the least.

Snow Glass Apples is a shivery fairy tale which cuts to the core of good vs. evil and that some things aren't always what they seem.

5 out of 5 stars Gaiman got game.......2002-11-08

I'm a fan...Neil's worst works still qualify as excellent in my mind, and these are some of his best. I read these stories when they were published 10 years ago in a small distribution book called Angels and Visitations. Then I saw them reprinted again in another book some years later.

The two plays in this package provided my wife and I the best entertainment we were going to get while being stuck in 8 hours of traffic. Finally I got my wife to pay attention to Neil's stuff (she refused to read Sandman)and she dug it.

If you like books on tape, this is better. If you like reading Neil's work, you'll like it even better this way.

Neil, if you're reading this...can we have some more of these?

                  5 out of 5 stars Jim Cartwright/Road.......2002-06-26

I was fortunate to be part of a production of Road a few years ago and it was a profound experience as much for the remarkable text and what it offers to the artists, as for the direction and extraordinary actors I was privilaged to be able to work with at the time. Jim Cartwright is an important and unashamed writer.

4 out of 5 stars TWO BY JIM CARTWRIGHT.......2000-06-07

TWO IS AN EXTREMELY WELL WRITTEN PLAY, AND THE IDEA OF HAVING TWO ACTORS PLAYING ALL OF THE CHARACTERS, IS A VERY GRAND IDEA IF THE ACTORS ARE EXPERIENCED ENOUGH TO DO THAT. I PERSONNALLY BELIEVE THAT IF THE CHARACTERS ARE PLAYED BY DIFFERENT ACTORS, YOU CAN HAVE ALOT MORE COSTUME ETC. FOR THEM TO WEAR. THE BUILT UP BETWEEN THE LANDLORD AND LANDLADY'S FINAL SCENE IS EXCELLENT, BAECAUSE BEFORE THEY HAVE THEIR EMOTIONAL OUTBURST, THEY KEEP HAVING LITTLE DIGS AT EACH OTHER, UNTIL FINALLY THEY EXPLODE AND CAN'T TAKE NOT TALKING ABOUT THEIR SHARED LOSS. "TWO" IS AN EXCELLENT PLAY AND SHOULD BE READ BY ALL.

5 out of 5 stars The best is "road".......2000-02-29

I was fortunate to star in a production of "Road" It is a truly magnificient piece of work, and must be read by all. Do not be discouraged by the language and strong tone it really adds to the realism of the entire piece

5 out of 5 stars Read this stuff.......1999-08-25

this book shows outstanding talent. Of a style i have not experienced with any other playwright, i have seen two of these shows performed and both of them were thougroly enjoyable. Cartwrights hard hitting style really gets you going if you are easily upset then you may be offended or indeed upset by the content. The dialoque in the playes is a mixture of surrealism and hard hitting realisting arguments. Many isues are dealt with such as mental illness suicide extream politics abuse and others. some of them are dealt with in a very subtle way that if you catch them they really make you think. I would like to hear from you if you are a cartwright fan. I await your email.
